RE: OT: NYC View

2016-02-01 Thread John Coyle
I did the same as Bob, went on street view in the location suggested (why are
there two Water and
Front streets on opposite sides of the river!) and the image had a very faint
outline of the Empire
State building, exactly as the referenced image did: I suspect it was enhanced
in PS.

Now I'm thinking the one (and only ) day I was in that spot the weather hid the
Empire
StateBuilding...
I took my photo (darkside camera) in February, 2008... didn't have a lot of
photos on that card.. I
used to take a bus to brooklyn that doesnt exist anymore, shop on atlantic ave
and take a train back
(or vice versa) - that way paying only one senior fare if I do it fast enough
(transfer free within
two hours) The other shots on the card with that date show wet sidewalks and
fog.

Funny thing is, I'd never seen photos from that perspective before...
and I found the spot by accident. Also possible I walked across the Brooklyn
Bridge that day...

ann (embarrased by my assertion that the view wasnt possible - although... I
still wonder if he
could have gotten that much of the buildings in the street and the enlarged
building.. maybe
selectively enlarged the building in photoshop?

I think if you correct for the keystone effect and crop it correctly you
can get pretty close with what Google shows. Just pan back a little and
change the view angle slightly.

Re: OT: NYC View

2016-01-31 Thread John

Plug these numbers into Google Maps search bar:
40.702820, -73.989601 & access street view.

DUMBO means Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass. I found that out
using TinEye to search and see if I could find the original of the image.

It doesn't look like the sun is setting in the north to me.

It looks like the sun has set in the north-west (as it would during the
summer at that latitude) and the glow from the sky is illuminating the
bridge & the Empire State Building. From the beginning of Spring through
the first day of Fall, the sun will appear to set north of due west
(between 270 deg & 302.5 deg).

Look it up on The Photographer's Ephemeris

http://app.photoephemeris.com/?ll=40.702819,-73.989588=40.7028,-73.9896=20160131160300-0500=18=0.00,0.01

http://tinyurl.com/zqnphv9

Apparently, with the right lighting & weather conditions you can see the
Empire State Building through the Manhattan Bridge supports from
Washington St. in Brooklyn.

https://www.google.com/search?hl=en=imghp=isch=hp=1563=886=Empire+State+Building+from+DUMBO=Empire+State+Building+from+DUMBO_l=img.12...2078.11036.0.13185.32.20.0.12.9.0.173.1547.17j1.18.00...1ac.1.64.img..2.26.1509.ZPRfLPkjzeg

http://tinyurl.com/Empire-DUMBO

The image is great, but it's been done so many times I don't know if
there's anything new I could add by making the pilgrimage myself to have
my own shot at it. But IF I'm ever up that way, I might give it a shot
anyway.

I think you're about a block too far back. It looks like you were
between Front St & York St.

I think you need to be between Water St & Front St to be able to frame
the Empire State Building inside the bridge supports the way the
photographer in Dan's found image did. To get the angle right, you'd
have to be standing out in the street, down near the front of those
school buses.

What's wrong is the proportion of the Empire state to the arch it is
under... also at this point more taller buildings are in the way
But it does make me want to grab my DA 55-300 and head to Brooklyn...
Maybe I'll do it tomorrow

Well, that google images link certainly show that it's been done to death.

Nevertheless, at least someone has found a way to squeeze a few drops of bad
taste from the image of an enormous phallus penetrating a vesica piscis:

I think you need to be between Water St & Front St to be able to frame
the Empire State Building inside the bridge supports the way the
photographer in Dan's found image did. To get the angle right, you'd
have to be standing out in the street, down near the front of those
school buses.

It doesn't look like the sun is setting in the north to me.

It looks like the sun has set in the north-west (as it would during the
