Re: PESOs: Domesticated fauna, shot with new-ish lens
I think there may have been a bit of camera shake in the dog photo. I kept having to call his name to get him to look at me, and his attention span isn't very long. So, I had to rush the shot a bit, which probably contributed to the softness. Thanks for the kind words! -- Walt On 9/14/2010 11:59 AM, David J Brooks wrote: Impressive. PESOs: Domesticated fauna, shot with new-ish lens
Just wanted to share a few shots I took today with a lens I bought a couple of months ago, but have yet to really use beyond just pointing it at something to check out sharpness. It's a Promaster EDO AF LD 70-300mm 1:4-5.6 tele-macro (1:2). I noticed some pretty severe fringes at f/4, but otherwise, I feel it's a pretty competent lens for under $200 US. http://www.flickr.com/photos/walt_gilbert/4983990651/#/photos/walt_gilbert/4983990651/lightbox/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/walt_gilbert/4983990651/#/photos/walt_gilbert/4983935877/lightbox/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/walt_gilbert/4983990651/#/photos/walt_gilbert/4984529590/lightbox/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/walt_gilbert/4983990651/#/photos/walt_gilbert/4983925255/lightbox/ (Note the blue around the nostril in this one -- I'll need to do some desaturation on that.) Anyone else had any experience with this lens, and advice on getting the most out of it? And, of course, suggestions, critiques, and inappropriate comments are always welcome. Thanks, Frank. I am a bit of a saturation and contrast junkie, at least at this stage of my development. I can see where some might find it a bit cloying, but I figure if I'm taking photos of generally unremarkable subject matter -- and, let's face it, cows aren't the most electrifying members of the animal kingdom -- I need to do something with it to grab the eye. -- Walt On 9/12/2010 6:26 PM, frank theriault wrote: On Sun, Sep 12, 2010 at 7:04 PM, Walter Gilbertldott...@gmail.com wrote: Just wanted to share a few shots I took today with a lens I bought a couple of months ago, but have yet to really use beyond just pointing it at something to check out sharpness. Re: PESOs: Domesticated fauna, shot with new-ish lens
Thanks for the info, Adam. It seems to be really well-built compared to some others I've used and handled. Plenty of resistance in the lens barrel, and a very smooth, crisp responsiveness. I'm pretty pleased with it, construction-wise. And, giving up a stop, and the last 50mm doesn't seem like too much to sacrifice. The look is reminiscent of some Sigmas I've seen, so I suspect you're right. Thanks again, Walt On 9/12/2010 7:12 PM, Adam Maas wrote: On Sun, Sep 12, 2010 at 7:04 PM, Walter Gilbertldott...@gmail.com wrote: Just wanted to share a few shots I took today with a lens I bought a couple of months ago, but have yet to really use beyond just pointing it at something to check out sharpness. It's a Promaster EDO AF LD 70-300mm 1:4-5.6 tele-macro (1:2). I noticed some pretty severe fringes at f/4, but otherwise, I feel it's a pretty competent lens for under $200 US. Anyone else had any experience with this lens, and advice on getting the most out of it? And, of course, suggestions, critiques, and inappropriate comments are always welcome. Best, Walt It's almost assuredly a rebadge of the Sigma 70-300 APO, and as such quite a reasonable performer considering its cost. To get the most out of it, stop down 1-2 stops and stay away from the last 50mm of the range where it will soften somewhat noticably. -Adam -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
