Well, digital parts of Nikon cameras are made by Sony.
Pentax is very successful in the main digital field - the digital compacts.
They are No. 2 in Germany and No. 1 in Sweden with 30% market share. Other
markets number are probably similar (I don't have them at hand). With the
new Option 230 their market share will probably increase.

It wasn't a snipe. If it was it would have been phrased differently. I was just
interested because so many people had waited for so long for a high end SLR.
It's good for Pentax, and the people buying it if they're happy with it. I
still can't understand why Pentax doesn't sell matching versions of the MS-S
and Limited lenses in North America (black lenses or silver bodies).

Pentax was nth generations behind in digital compacts. Yet, their first
solo effort, the Optio range, beats Canon's offering and has been a
commercial success. So there is no point pushing out a product with no
marketing potential. Nikon or Canon can sell anything at any price, but
not Pentax. I, for one, think that they are wise in shelving the 6Mp

Nikon: D1 original, D1X/D1H, D100. These don't include the older Kodak/Nikon

Nikon and Canon aren't. Kodak is barely hanging in there with competive
products, let alone leading. Have you looked at the DCS720x and DCS760 (both

and Canon are willing and able to do so.

You just posted that Pentax are three generations behind because Nikon
have revised their digital SLR three times. But Nikon is ahead of Kodak

I've only had mine a very short time, so I can't really say definitively at this
point, but there are 2 things that made the camera extremely desirable for me: the
grip takes AA
batteries and has a vertical shutter release. I really think the vertical release is
going to have an impact on the way I shoot...

Other things I like:

- better low light AF
- I prefer the interface over the pz-1p, especially exp. compensation
- I like the finder better

Things I don't like:

- the back door is flimsier than I would like
- can't use the vertical release with my Stroboframes. I might be able to jury rig
this, but I'm not sure at this point.
- 1/2 step exposure compensation.

One more commentI never really loved my PZ-1p's. They're very capable, and gave
great bang for the buck, but they just weren't, um, loyalty-inspiring. They're big
plastic
robo-blobs.

I think the MZ-S is different in that respect. We'll see.

Nothing at the show, no press releases of future possibilities, etc.
I'm sure they're working on a DSLR. Since things change so rapidly in
this area, they must come up with something that's ahead of the curve at
a competitive price. I know that takes time, $$$, talent, and a crystal
ball. I also know that they probably can't afford a failure, certainly
not from the standpoint of their image or customer loyalty, all of which
equates to $$. But if they're too conservative, they'll be too far
behind ... my feeling is that they really have to be ahead of the
competition wrt to quality, perhaps features.

It's disappointing - and to some, even frustrating - to hear nothing
from them about their future plans in this area. Of course, silence is
preferred to a failure, or announcing a product that they can't deliver,
for whatever reason.

What frustrates me - and I'm not even that interested in digital
cameras, so I can imagine the frustration of others who are - is that
Pentax is taking so long to get a viable product to market, their poor
marketing and distribution notwithstanding.

Re: Where's Pentax?

2002-02-23 Thread Cotty

Where is Pentax in all of this. Why they built the camera a year ago, but as
usual decided that their customers didn't need anything like that. Pextax
whose motto from corporate headquarters to their dealers is, Pentax? We
don't sell them.

Allow me to play Devil's advocate for a moment. A while back Pentax were
developing the digital SLR, right? We've all seen the pics of it, and a
lucky few have actually held it. It exists, or existed. Which means there
was (and still is) research and development going on. They were trying to
get it to work, they had a problem. They tried to get round the problem,
it was difficult. Meanwhile, they see how the market is starting to pan
out. Their consumer digicams are selling well. So are others.
Professionals wanting digital are buying the Nikon and Canon gear as
expected, but the D30 is selling very well, and within price range of
enthusiasts. Sure it would be nice to get a full frame sensor into the
Pentax DSLR, but bearing in mind the issues (problems, and now price),
they start work on a more modest proposal. It may even have been R and
D'd in tandem with the original. The chassis and plastics are already
made, just need to make it work, and hey: watch the price. Nikon D100 at
half the price (est) of the D1x/h? That's enthusiast territory. That's
us. Why would Nikon make a cheaper DSLR? Because they can, and it will
sell BIG. Pentax can do that, and they are.

Sure they're late, but they have an excuse. They were working on a biggy,
but it couldn't be made to work. And someone upstairs said, 'look fellas,
even if we do push this out, at over 5 grand (US) [or whatever -
megabucks] it's gonna be too much for most enthusiasts, and we know that
we've lost out on the pro market, no way are we going to get that back
with this strategy, so let's back it off, and push on with a cut-down
DSLR at 2 or 3 grand (US) - thats our market, let's go get 'em.'

And I think this is what they said, and this is what they are doing. I'm
not normally a betting man, but I'd seriously have 20 quid with anyone
reading this that a Pentax DSLR will not only be announced, but working
examples displayed, with orders taken from retailers, before the coming
Christmas. I would hope on the shelves before Christmas, but maybe after.
Either way, imminently.

Now, I'm chewing at the bit for a DSLR, and now the D100 and the D60 are
going to be out, I'm climbing the walls. However, I firmly believe that
we will not be left (too far) behind, and that in a few short months
there will be big grins all round. I'll stick with it, as the cost of
having my favourite glass machined with Nikon or Canon mounts would
exceed the cost of a D100 and a 17-35mm. Have faith. It's coming. You'll
see!

Meanwhile, I'm just nipping over to dpreview for another look at some
digital hardware ;-)

Cheers,

Cotty

 Subject: Re: Where's Pentax?

I Why they built the camera a year ago, but as
usual decided that their customers didn't need anything like that.
Pextax
whose motto from corporate headquarters to their dealers is, Pentax?
We
 don't sell them.
---
According to their official press release, Pentax dropped the MZ-D
design because they felt
that it wasn't going to be competitive
enough (And they were absolutely right about that). They have promised
that the wisdoms learned
from this project, will evolve into
other digital cameras.

Best regards,
Roland
