Re: What are the kids listening to today?
There's something about the BoRox that's so damn simple, basic and catchy that kids love 'em. Uh, my four year old is in the other room singing "Kit Kat Clock." Forget Barney and them Teletubbies, give the BoRox their own PBS morning show!
Gaffney to record shows at Swallows Inn this weekend
Hi there, In light of recent Dave Alvin posts with Chris Gaffney mentions, I thought some of you might be interested in the following information: If any of you SoCal types are brave enough to venture behind the Orange Curtain, try to make it out to The Swallows Inn in San Juan Capistrano this weekend, March 26 - 28, to catch Chris Gaffney and his backing band, The Cold Hard Facts. The Swallows Inn is one of the last great little honky tonks in Southern California and a regular stomping grounds for Chris and the band. For this reason, it has been chosen as the site for a series of live recordings that will be included on the re-issue of Gaffney's 1986 "Road to Indio" debut album. Although Chris will also perform on Friday evening, the live recordings will take place on March 27 and 28, this Saturday from 8:30 pm - 12:30 a.m., and Sunday, from 4:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. The Swallows Inn is located at 31786 Camino Capistrano, off the 5 freeway, exit west on Ortega; (949) 493-3188. Admission is free, but be sure to arrive early as this place fills up quickly when Chris is in the house. The first-time-on-cd-reissue of "Road to Indio" is slated for a June release on Foothill Recordings. Back to my lurking (and living vicariously through all the SXSW reports), Jeanne

Re: Question about TV bands (for parents of preschoolers)
Hi there, I promised myself that I'd stop this, but I can't help it. Why leave out current quality children's programming examples? We just saw an Arthur episode on PBS the other day where Arthur and his pals wanted to go see their favorite group, Binky (who look suspiciously like ABBA), perform. Turns out they are holograms. (OH NO!) Then yesterday Arthur and his pal Buster auditioned musicians to be in their band (vaguely reminiscent of the audition scene in the movie, The Commitments). Those kids, er, puppets, on Puzzle Place can really rock whenever they've got an important moral to hammer out. Let's not forget that Mr. Rogers tickles the ivories whenever the mood strikes and quite frequently jams with guests like Yo Yo Ma. And last but not least (for now), "You Gotta Put Down the Ducky (if you wanna play the saxophone)" with Hoot the Owl and Ernie on Sesame Street. Bowing out before I embarass myself any further, Jeanne
RE: Question about TV bands
Later on, didn't The Dickies cover this one too? and the theme from "Gigantor?" My punk rock memory is failing me in my old age (to make room for all this twang stuff no doubt) . . . RE: Question about TV bands
I know that The Brady Bunch was already mentioned, but in addition to the Peter voice changing episode (song: "When it's time to change you've got to rearrange"), I remember the episode where the kids go on a TV talent show as "The Silver Platters" to win the cash for an anniversary gift for their parents (song: "I think I'll go for a walk outside/the summer sun's coming my way/I just can't stay inside all day/I've got to get up . . . it's a sunshine day") and the Marsha-inviting-Davy-Jones-to-her-junior-high-dance episode (I think he sings some song like, "Girl, look what you've done to me"). How about the Johnny Bravo episode where Gregg gets a recording contract because he "fits the suit?"

cryptic messages in old vinyl numbering systems
Good morning all, Just when this thread is dying out, I'd like to throw out another vinyl query: what's up with the funky sayings inscribed in the smooth part of the vinyl at the end of an album side? (as I typed this question, my better half looked over my shoulder, mumbled a quasi-answer, then went and grabbed a copy of an album from one of his old bands. There, etched in the vinyl are the words, "Smell this.") Just wondering . . . Jeanne
