Re: PowerBook 3400 CD-ROM Issue

2004-05-09 Thread Dan Palka
Yes.. if CD-ROM discs dont show up then you probably dont have the
CD-ROM extension in the system folder.

Which may make sense for a computer that did not ship with a CD-ROM
drive.

You need to get it off a system install cd.

How do you know that the module is recognized by the 3400? Usually,
CDs not appearing on the desktop is a symptom of not having a CD

USB 2.0 *and* FireWire for Wallstreet (and, perhaps, for Kanga)

2004-05-09 Thread ACFX44501

There is a new "Combo" USB 2.0+FireWire card on the market, which is a
good option for the Wallstreet, as this is the last PowerBook which
doesn't have USB.

Two USB 2.0 ports and Two FireWire ports in a single card.

PPA International is the manufacturer. Bar code 33250-00111. About $49.95
at Fry's Electronics.

I have tested this card in my Wallstreet II under MacOS 9.1, in USB mode,
and it works as advertised.

I have not yet tested it in FireWire mode.

The card is a sell-out at Fry's, but it is not stocked in Fry's Mac
section, only in the generic (that is, PC) section.

Incredibly, the product's package documentation says nothing about MacOS
9.x support, but it is there. You will see that only after loading the
support CD-ROM.

Only MacOS 10.1.5 and later needs the supplied driver CD-ROM. Earlier
MacOSes are supported right out of the (retail) box.

I will be modifying my "Kanga" to accept Cardbus cards, as a direct
consequence of this success.

The "circle M" protects the microcode (firmware, in most cases). The
"circle C" protects the overall chip.

If Apple bought the microcontroller "macro", then there could be no
"circle C" for the microcontroller, as the license includes unlimited
reproduction rights, and, at that point, the microcontroller is not
separable from the Apple logic, anyway.

Nearly every microcontroller from a 4-bit to a 32-bit is available this
way.

The most popular imbedded micrcontroller may be the (Zilog) Z80, but the
(Intel) 386 is also seen in imbedded applications. Even the (IBM) PowerPC
is available in several imbedded variations.

Apple probably bought the 68HC05 "core" from Motorola as a "macro" to its
design automation system, and then had whomever make the composite chip
for them.

Nearly every microcontroller can be had that way (even PowerPC), and
there is no requirement for the composite chip to be made by the
originator of the microcontroller.
