Ahem, that site contains links to copyrighted software... Never a good idea
to post that to a list, not for the owner of the site, or of the list.

There is a good website still that as all of the systems up to 7.5.5 for
free download, including system 7 pro (7.1.1).

I forget where, but I always find it on google after a few minutes of
searching when I need some old OS.

The title of the page was "where to download the macos"

Re: Mac OS

2003-02-13 Thread RaceCivicR
I've gotten it to work fine (tested on a 520c and Quadra 800). Don't get me
wrong, it's not easy but I'll do my best to describe how I did it. First I
downloaded the whole 19 files and then decompressed the whole deal (gives you
a folder which is your installer). Anyway, I then used it to instal the basic
OS (custom instal) onto a blank hard drive which now gave me my system
folder. Now the hard part. I then used disk copy to make me a blank image
file (use standard hfs) and threw the installer and the system folder onto it
so now when you open the .img file you have your installer and the system
folder on it. I then used Toast Ti 5, selected other (hold down on the mouse)
and then selected Mac Volume and this gives you the option to select the
mounted image. Select it, click bootable (gotten weird results selecting
optimize on the fly, might want to unclick it) and presto a bootable 7.5.3
installer.

You may also want to add the 7.5.5 updater to the disk as well. Just be sure
to put the updater into it's own folder, make an alias and put that next to
the 7.5.3 installer icon.

   Jake

[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote...>

I tried to burn bootables cds for older macs and it doesnt work - the

old mac freezes -

they are all like discimages that is started from the first one,

there is no install system present in theese diskimages - just an

installer,

you could as I finally did take the system files from a 8.1 cd and

then burn the diskimages together with that, start from the 8.1

system on the cd and install the 7.5.3 wherever you want it.

No, thanks. I guess we were both right.

There is no way you can make a set of install floppies from those parts,
like I said.

They do work together to make ONE SINGLE image that contains the installer.

Technically, you didn't use the installer to make floppies; you used
floppies to transfer the installer image to a hard drive.

Thanks Fabian.I wish I would have seen this back when I was trying
to make my floppies! I had very little idea of what I was doing, being a
total Mac newbie at the time! IIRC I was having to reformat each floppy

Here is the instruction from the same web page for mounting the 19 disk images on your
desktop, which you can then copy to floppy disks:

Name: System 7.5 Version 7.5.3

Released: January 30, 1999

Requires:
System 7.5.3 requires an Apple Macintosh or PowerBook computer with at
least 4MB of RAM. Note: newer Macintosh and PowerBook computers
require versions of System software higher than version 7.5.3 in order
to operate. See TIL article 8970 for information on which CPUs support
System 7.5.3.

Description:
This is the North American English version of System 7.5 version
7.5.3, which includes the following system updates: System 7.5 Update
2.0 and System 7.5.3 Revision 2. For further information on System
7.5.3, please consult the Technical Information Library.

Instructions:
This software is available as 19 parts of a self-mounting Disk Copy
image. Download all 19 parts to your hard drive and then double-click
on the first part to mount the compressed disk image on your desktop.

Note that self-mounting Disk Images require Mac OS version 7.0.1 or
later. If you are using a version of Mac OS prior to this, you can
download the System 7.5 Network Access floppy disk and boot your
Macintosh from that to use this software.

One other thoughtwhich version of DiskCopy are you using? It may be

It's been almost a year ago that I did it...IIRC I had to download them
in order because you have to have the first one (smi.bin) in order to
do anything with the others. D/L #1-19 each on their own floppy and when
you go to install you have to create a folder on the machine you want to
install to and transfer each disk into that folder and then start from
the #1 smi.bin. I remember it took me quite a long time to figure out
the process with alot of going back and forth but perserverence paid
off. If you seriously need this let me know and I'll try to reconstruct

I have looked there, and the only FULL INSTALLATION of "System 7.5 version
7.5.3" still listed is the multipart installer download, the floppy version
is not listed there.

Not true. Take a look at the following massive list of old Apple software still

Yes -- and I never tried to construct a whole system that way, just the
emergency boot disk floppies for 7.5x & 8.5.

Not anymore. In the past, Apple had both the floppy version of System 7.5.3
available online, as a series of single 1.4 MB floppy images, and the CD
version, which consists of 19 parts of one big image file that can be burnt
to a CD-R.

The floppy version is no longer available for download, for some reason.

Greetings,
A question on this; once downloaded and unstuffed (the 19 parts of OS
7.5.3), is it possible to take the unstuffed parts and burn a working
installer CD? I'm thinking that the issue of using a newer faster Mac to
download the System to use on an older (aka, slower) Mac would not be an
uncommon scenario.
Thank you.

Fran,

The downloads for System 7.5 were regular floppy images of an install set,
as you say.

I think it's System 7.5.3 which is only available as a set of images that
must be mounted on the desktop and installed from there.

Did you make the floppy disks AFTER the images were mounted on the desktop?

I didn't think there was a way to make the images directly into disks.

You are not wrong.

The System 7.5.3 download from Apple consists of 19 parts of ONE big disk
image.

The idea is that you download and unstuff the parts, then mount the image
and install from there.

Maybe if you made it clear EXACTLY what OS it is that you have...?
I've seen you write 7.5.? , but what does the "?" signify? Is it a zero
or a "3"?

So, I think I understand that you have DiskCopy images of "some" OS, and
that possibly you are trying to convert these to floppy disks on your PC?

Is that the case?

Not sure if Roxio EZ CD Creator for Windows can read Roxio Toast disc
images unless you install a software like Macdrive 98 or newer that
reads/writes/saves Mac files on a PC.

this was an option if you already had toast a program for burning cds
- you can save discimages in that one -
and if you have toast in both pc and mac they can read each others

on our domestic maclist (macsweden) someone said that toasts
diskimages (from roxio) can be transferred to a pc read and if you
want then burnt, a toast discimage is very much alike a disk copy
img, and toast can mount img files. but then you need to have a copy

no, i do not think there is a way todo that as for running disk copy you
need a PC program that can do that. i you want to make coppy's of a disk,
coppy the stuff on the disk to your computer and then put the disk in that
you want to coppy and coppy it to the disk

No need to upgrade to 9.2, the only changes in 9.2 from 9.1 are things
to make it work with OSX 10.1, and new Apple hardware.

9.1 is a free downloadable upgrade from Apple, though, again, I'm not
sure it's needed.

Itunes works fine with OS 9.1, at least.

Re: Mac OS 10.1 IS HERE!

2001-09-25 Thread MacinNW

Whoa Michelle, the release is __after__ Friday at midnight!

Per my conversation with the Computer Store/ PowerMax/ the MugStore, a
25-year Authorized Dealer, the Instant Up-to-Date version is the "flat-pak",
full 10.1 CD and 9.2.1 updater CD, _no_ Developer Tools CD. You need to bring
either the coupons or your receipt. Some retailers may accept as proof of
purchase the OS 10.0.x CD.

The $20 version is supposed to be more complete.

So there is still some speculation and waiting left.
