[ppiindia] Jerusalem 1187 Masehi....
Rasulullah SAW bersabda, “Janganlah memaksakan (berusaha keras) mengadakan perjalanan kecuali pada tiga masjid : Masjidil Haram, Masjidku(Masjid Nabawi) dan Masjid Al-Aqsha”. (HR. …No one has ever seen or heard of such a slaughter of pagans, for they were burned on pyres like pyramid, and no one save God alone knows how many there were… Demikian yang dituliskan oleh David R. Blanks and Michael Frassetto dalam Western Views of Islam in Medieval and Early Modern Europe, untuk menggambarkan peristiwa penaklukan Jerusalemdi tahun 1099.
[ppiindia] One man's giant leap forward
http://www.smh.com.au/world/one-mans-giant-leap-forward-20100205-nitm.html One man's giant leap forward ALEX DUVAL SMITH February 6, 2010 Long march to freedom ... Nelson Mandela and his then wife Winnie leave Victor Verster Prison near Cape Town in 1990. Photo: Reuters Twenty years on, F.W. de Klerk talks about his decision to release Nelson Mandela, reports Alex Duval Smith. After 26 years in prison, Nelson Mandela did not want to be set free straight away. Two days before his release, the world's most famous political prisoner was taken to see President F. W. de Klerk in his Cape Town office. The president got a surprise. ''I told him he would be flown to Johannesburg and released there on 11 February 1990. Mr Mandela's reaction was not at all as I had expected,'' said De Klerk. ''He said: 'No, it is too soon, we need more time for preparation.' That is when I realised that long hours of negotiation lay ahead with this man.'' Twenty years after the event, sitting in the study of his Cape Town home, Frederik Willem de Klerk, now 73, still has the headmasterly style and deliberate speech that the watching world came to know as he played a crucial role in dismantling apartheid. But the winner of the 1993 Nobel Peace Prize still recalls the enormous leap of faith that was required to negotiate the end of white minority rule with what he describes as the ''fundamentally socialistic'' African National Congress of the time. Just after 4pm on the date appointed by De Klerk, Mandela, then 71, walked free, holding the hand of his wife, Winnie. The prisoner had lost his argument for a later release date but had persuaded De Klerk to allow him to leave directly from Victor Verster Prison, in Paarl, near Cape Town. Mandela held up his fist in an ANC salute. In an instant he switched from being a symbol of the oppressed to the global symbol of courage and freedom that he remains today. Mandela's release did not signal the end of apartheid. In fact, the white-ruled pariah state was entering the most dangerous chapter in its history since the introduction of racial separation in 1948. Four hours after leaving prison, Mandela arrived in Cape Town to address thousands of people gathered outside city hall. The impatient crowd had clashed with police and bullets had been fired. But Mandela did not bring a message of appeasement. ''The factors which necessitated armed struggle still exist today,'' he told the cheering onlookers. Mandela called on the international community to maintain its sanctions. ''I have carried the idea of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. I hope to live to see the achievement of that ideal. But if need be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die,'' he shouted. With hindsight, Mandela used the fiery address to take up a negotiating position and convince the black majority that he had not made a secret pact with the authorities. De Klerk had his moment of truth nine days earlier, in an address to the all-white parliament that coined the phrase ''a new South Africa''. ''There were gasps in the house, yes,'' said De Klerk, ''but not at the news of Mr Mandela's release. The gasps came when I announced the unbanning not only of the ANC but also the South African Communist Party and of all affiliated organisations, which included the armed wing of the ANC, Umkhonto we Sizwe. There were gasps then and, from the far-right party, protests and boos.'' DE KLERK speaks slowly and clearly - and charmlessly. He is a lawyer from a strict, Calvinist tradition in which displays of emotion are seen as a sign of weakness. His one quirk seems to be the incessant chewing of gum. He has lived in this modern house in Fresnaye for 18 months, having moved into Cape Town with his second wife, Elita, from his farm in Paarl. He points out that, from his garden, he has a view of Robben Island, where Mandela spent 18 years in prison. Radical change requires steely nerves. De Klerk had become president in September 1989, the son of a National Party cabinet minister and the nephew of a prime minister. He grew up with Afrikaner fear in his DNA - the dread that after 400 years on the tip of Africa and the struggle against British colonial rule, his Huguenot descendants would be chased into the sea by the black majority. That fear contributed to policies that built his nation - forced removals to create racially segregated areas and blacks being deprived of their citizenship. It led to ''passbooks'', introduced to restrict black people's movements beyond those that were necessary to the economy, and separate beaches, buses, hospitals, schools, universities and lavatories for blacks, whites, mixed-race ''coloureds'' and Indians. De Klerk claims he had no confidant as he prepared his February 2 speech at his holiday home in Hermanus in the Western Cape. ''My predecessor, P.W. Botha
[ppiindia] Whisky recovered after 100 years on ice
http://www.theage.com.au/world/whisky-recovered-after-100-years-on-ice-20100205-nijw.html Whisky recovered after 100 years on ice WELLINGTON February 6, 2010 Five crates of whisky and brandy belonging to polar explorer Ernest Shackleton have been recovered after being buried for more than 100 years under the Antarctic ice, explorers said on yesterday. The spirits were excavated from beneath Shackleton's Antarctic hut which was built in 1908. To our amazement we found five crates, three labelled as containing whisky and two labelled as containing brandy, said Al Fastier of the New Zealand Antarctic Heritage Trust, who previously believed there were only two crates. The unexpected find of the brandy crates, one labelled Chas Mackinlay Co and the other labelled The Hunter Valley Distillery Limited Allandale are a real bonus. Some of the crates have cracked and ice has formed inside which will make the job of extracting the contents delicate. However, Fastier said the trust was confident the crates contained intact alcohol, given that liquid could be heard when the crates were moved. The smell of whisky in the surrounding ice also indicated full bottles of spirits were inside, albeit that one or more might have broken. Richard Paterson, master blender at Whyte and Mackay, whose company supplied the Mackinlay's whisky for Shackleton, described the find as a gift from the heavens for whisky lovers. If the contents can be confirmed, safely extracted and analysed, the original blend may be able to be replicated, he said. Given the original recipe no longer exists this may open a door into history. Fastier said the Trust would determine in the coming weeks how best to handle the delicate conservation task. Shackleton's expedition ran short of supplies on their long trek to the South Pole from Cape Royds in 1907-1909 and they eventually fell about 160 kilometres short of their goal. No lives were lost, vindicating Shackleton's decision to turn back from the pole, first reached in 1911 by Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen. Shackleton's expedition sailed from Cape Royds hurriedly in 1909 as winter ice began forming in the sea, forcing them to leave some equipment and supplies - including the whisky - behind. The excavation of the whisky follows the discovery last month of two blocks of butter in an Antarctic hut used by British explorer Robert Falcon Scott on his doomed 1910-12 expedition. The butter had been stored in stables attached to the expedition hut at Cape Evans in Antarctica. AFP [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
[ppiindia] Scientists find female sex hormone in plant
http://www.hindustantimes.com/Scientists-find-female-sex-hormone-in-plant/H1-Article1-505844.aspx Scientists find female sex hormone in plant Press Trust Of India Washington, February 06, 2010 Last Updated: 00:55 IST(6/2/2010) In a finding that may change scientific understanding of the evolution of female sex hormone 'progesterone', scientists have claimed to have found the hormone in a plant. Until now, scientists thought that only animals could make progesterone -- a steroid hormone secreted by the ovaries -- which prepares the uterus for pregnancy and maintains it. A synthetic version, progestin, is used in birth control pills and other medications. The significance of the unequivocal identification of progesterone cannot be overstated, said the study by a team led by Guido F Pauli at the College of Pharmacy, Chicago. While the biological role of progesterone has been extensively studied in mammals, the reason for its presence in plants is less apparent, it said. Though scientists had previously identified progesterone like substances in plants and speculated that the hormone itself could exist in plants, they had not found the actual hormone in plants until now. Pauli and his colleagues used two powerful laboratory techniques, nuclear magnetic resonance and mass spectroscopy, to detect progesterone in leaves of the Common Walnut, or English Walnut, tree. They also identified five new progesterone-related steroids in a plant belonging to the buttercup family. Following the discovery, published in ACS Journal of Natural Products, the scientists believe the hormone, like other steroid hormones, might be an ancient bioregulator that evolved billions of years ago, before the appearance of modern plants and animals. [ppiindia] Know your rights
http://www.arabnews.com/?page=13section=0article=132365d=5m=2y=2010pix=kingdom.jpgcategory=Local Press Thursday 4 February 2010 (19 Safar 1431) Know your rights Saad Al-Rifaie | Al-Madinah Have you ever been stopped by a security officer without knowing the reason? Do you know what you should and should not do in that situation? Have you ever been bewildered by a lost job right and did not know the proper procedures for reprieve? Have you ever been subjected to financial or commercial fraud and did not know where to complain? What prompted me to ask these questions was the absence of what could be called the culture of rights. Not many people in our country are fully aware of their rights and duties. People only know to go to the police whenever they have a problem. The citizens grow up respecting the police uniform because policemen deserve all the respect as guardians of public safety and national security. But everyone - cops, professionals, officials and citizens - reside inside the general culture and are liable to make mistakes because the concept of rights and duties is not crystal clear. Based on this, I call for organizing an annual awareness day or week under the slogan Know Your Rights where various activities could be prepared to focus on spreading this culture of rights. Booklets can be printed and distributed listing citizens' rights and duties - from traffic law to land and financial rights to rights in the workplace. The spreading of this awareness would make partners between citizens and the government. When citizens come to realize their rights they also become committed to their duties. The spread of this culture of rights would prevent many violations committed by a category of people who exploit the ignorance of citizens regarding their rights. This would also cut the number of complaints to unconcerned departments. When citizens are fully aware of their rights, they know where to go directly instead of losing time and causing trouble at unconcerned departments. The schools can also educate our youth regarding their rights and duties so that when they grow up they become citizens armed with this knowledge. [ppiindia] From today: U.S. doctors working in Cuban hospitals
http://www.granma.cu/ingles/2010/febrero/vier5/us-doctors-cuban-hospitals.html Havana. February 5, 2010 When the earth shook in Haiti From today: U.S. doctors working in Cuban hospitals ? Seven graduates from the Latin American School of Medicine in Havana Leticia Martínez Hernández Photos: Juvenal Balán PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti.-Seven young doctors have just arrived at the Croix des Bouquets field hospital. They have come from the United States and wish to help their Cuban brothers and sisters in attending to the suffering Haitian people. We are in the process of having our Medical degrees validated, but felt the need to be here, we're leaving aside our studies so as to say 'Present', they affirm. For that reason they will begin attending to Haitian patients today. American medical graduates from ELAM have arrived at the field hospital to work with the Cubans to attend to Haitian patients. Elsie Walter talks on behalf of all of them, explaining that they are graduates from the Latin American School of Medicine in Cuba (ELAM). Five of them are from New York and two from California. They responded to a call from the Reverend Lucius Walker, and didn't hesitate. There were lots of us who wanted to come, but given our responsibilities there, only seven of us could come for now; others are thinking of joining later on, because we know that the Cuban medical brigade is going to be here for a good long time. For one month, this first group will be working in the Cuban hospital that, up until yesterday, had attended to 3,590 patients. They will be sharing with its doctors all aspects of field hospital life. Orthopedist William Alvarez, director of the center, explains that the idea is to incorporate them into hospital activities, both on the ground and in consultations, although of course, this will be done in a staggered way. The main concern of these doctors, all women, is their lack of knowledge of Creole, but in that context, Haitian students training as doctors in Cuba and currently in Haiti, will support them. In the hospital where the American doctors start work today, 3,590 patients have received medical attention. The doctor highlighted that the young ELAM graduates came with their packs of water and food but, as soon as they arrived, they handed them over to the hospital's reserves. They also brought backpacks loaded with medicines, which they likewise immediately donated. They have incorporated themselves very well in the group of Cubans, he says. Without any doubt, they are a great help, and also a challenge, because we are responsible for their preparation and they are in a scenario that they haven't experienced before. For example, they have never had to confront illnesses like Chagas or Leishmaniasis. Elsie comments that they came to share everything, as they learned in ELAM. For that reason, they do not see any problem in sleeping in tents and working at any hour of the day or night. The experience has been fantastic, you have treated us very well, with that great hospitality, we feel privileged to be here; thank you Cuba for opening your doors to us as always. Elsie says that she and her colleagues are in the process of sitting examinations to validate their degrees and comments that although the assessment in her country is different, they are sufficiently prepared to pass them. This is the attitude of these young women trained in Cuba who have joined our doctors to continue saving lives in Haiti. When consultations begin in the Croix des Bouquets field hospital, the patients will find new faces; however, the attention will remain the same. [ppiindia] Hamas: We regret harming Israeli civilians in rocket attacks
http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/1147854.html Last update - 23:49 05/02/2010 Hamas: We regret harming Israeli civilians in rocket attacks By Reuters Hamas, in an unusual move, has expressed regret for the deaths of Israeli civilians in Palestinian rocket attacks during fighting in Gaza a year ago. Israel, where Hamas suicide bombers have killed hundreds of civilians over two decades, dismissed any apology for the three non-combatants hit by rockets from Gaza in the war as insincere. In a report by a committee set up by Hamas to examine UN allegations of war crimes by its fighters, the authors said: We regret any harm that may have befallen any Israeli civilian. We hope the Israeli civilians understand that their government's continued attacks on us were the key issue and the cause, added the report, of which Reuters obtained a copy. In response to the report, delivered to the United Nations this week, Foreign Ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor said on Friday: For years Hamas has boasted about deliberately targeting civilians, either through suicide bombings, by gunfire or by rockets. Who are they trying to fool now? At least one senior Hamas official, who declined to be named, said the movement remained ready to conduct martyrdom operations - suicide bombings of Israeli buses, cafes and the like, which have not, however, been seen for several years. The Hamas report, after listing Palestinian grievances such as the Israeli embargo on Gaza, reaffirmed comments by officials of the 22-year-old Islamist movement that its improvised rockets were fired purely defensively and were aimed at Israeli military targets. They simply lacked the necessary accuracy, Hamas said. It should be noted that the Palestinian resistance...is not an organized army that possesses developed technological weapons, the report said. It may target a military site or a tank position and their fire goes astray...and hit a civilian location, despite their efforts to avoid hurting civilians. Israel and independent rights groups say Hamas has broken the laws of war by indiscriminately firing thousands of rockets and mortars around Israeli towns, notably Sderot, close to the Gaza border, in the years since the group won a parliamentary election in 2006 and seized full control in Gaza in 2007. Some 1,400 Palestinians, including hundreds of civilians, were killed in a three-week Israeli offensive launched on Dec. 27, 2008. Israel and the Palestinians were urged by UN investigator Richard Goldstone in September to conduct credible inquiries into possible war crimes committed by their forces. Both sides presented documents to the United Nations in recent days which they say showed they had conducted suitable investigations. In a message on Thursday to the General Assembly, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon withheld judgment on whether either party had met Goldstone's recommendations. UN member states will consult on the further course of action, General Assembly spokesman Jean Victor Nkolo said. Rights group Amnesty International called Ban's message deeply disappointing. Amnesty International believes that the information [Ban] had received was sufficient to show clearly that the steps taken by both sides have been completely inadequate, it said in a statement. Israel, which has furiously rejected Goldstone's report as unbalanced, says Hamas deliberately puts Palestinian civilians in harm's way in order to shield its fighters and to exploit international pressure on Israel over civilian deaths. Diaa al-Madhoun, a Palestinian judge who took part in drafting the report to the United Nations, told Reuters that the expression of regret conformed to what he said was Hamas' commitment to international humanitarian law. It is part of our religion not to target civilians, women, children and the elderly, who do not take part in the aggression against us, he said, echoing language in the Hamas report. More than 500 Israelis were killed in suicide bombings during a Palestinian uprising from 2000. Many of those bombers were sent by Hamas, pursuing what it calls martyrdom operations. Asked whether the expression of regret to the United Nations marked a change in that strategy, a Hamas official in Gaza told Reuters: There is no change in the movement's policy, and that includes our position on the martyrdom operations. [ppiindia] The Dalnegorsk UFO Crash: Roswell Incident of the Soviet Union
http://english.pravda.ru/society/anomal/05-02-2010/112049-dalnegorsk_ufo_crash-0 05.02.2010 The Dalnegorsk UFO Crash: Roswell Incident of the Soviet Union This internationally famous UFO incident took place in 1986, on January 29, at 7:55 p.m. Some have called it the Roswell Incident of the Soviet Union. The information concerning this incident was sent to us by a number of Russian ufologists. Dalnegorsk is a small mining town in the Far East of Russia. That cold January day a reddish sphere flew into this town from the southeastern direction, crossed part of Dalnegorsk, and crashed at the Izvestkovaya Mountain (also known as Height or Hill 611, because of its size). The object flew noiselessly, and parallel to the ground; it was approximately three meters in diameter, of a near-perfect round shape, with no projections or cavities, its colour similar to that of burning stainless steel. One eyewitness, V. Kandakov, said that the speed of the UFO was close to 15 meters per hour. The object slowly ascended and descended, and its glow would heat up every time it rose up. On its approach to Hill 611 the object jerked, and fell down like a rock. All witnesses reported that the object jerked or jumped. Most of them recall two jumps. Two girls remember that the object actually jumped four times. The witnesses heard a weak, muted thump. It burned intensively at the cliff's edge for an hour. A geological expedition to the site, led by V. Skavinsky of the Institute of Geology and Geophysics of the Siberian Branch of the Soviet Academy of Sciences (1988), had confirmed the object's movements through a series of chemical and physical tests of the rocks collected from the site. Valeri Dvuzhilni, head of the Far Eastern Committee for Anomalous Phenomena, was the first to investigate the crash. With the help of our colleagues in Russia this is the most accurate account of the incident to date. Dr. Dvuzhilni arrived at the site two days after the crash. Deep snow was covered the area at the time. The site of the crash, located on a rocky ledge, was devoid of snow. All around the site remnants of silica splintered rocks were found: (due to exposure to high temperatures), and smoky looking. Many pieces, and a nearby rock, contained particles of silvery metal, some sprayed-like, some in the form of solidified balls. At the edge of the site a tree-stump was found. It was burnt and emitted a chemical smell. The objects collected at the site were later dubbed as tiny nets, little balls, lead balls, and glass pieces (that is what each resembled). Closer examination revealed very unusual properties. One of the tiny nets contained torn and very thin (17 micrometers) threads. Each of the threads consisted of even thinner fibers, tied up in plaits. Intertwined with the fibers were very thin gold wires. Soviet scientists, at such facilities as the Omsk branch of the Academy of Sciences, analyzed all collected pieces. Without going into specific details suffice it to say that the technology to produce such materials was not yet available on Earth...except for one disturbing account. To give an idea of the complexity of the composition of the pieces, let us look at the iron balls. Each of them had its own chemical composition: iron, and a large mixture of aluminum, manganese, nickel, chromium, tungsten, and cobalt. Such differences indicate that the object was not just a piece of lead and iron, but some heterogeneous construction made from heterogeneous alloys with definite significance. When melted in a vacuum, some pieces would spread over a base, while at another base they would form into balls. Half of the balls were covered with convex glass-like structures. Neither the physicists nor physical metallurgists can say what these structures are, what their composition is. The tiny nets (or mesh) have confused many researchers. It is impossible to understand their structure and nature of the formation. A. Kulikov, an expert on carbon at the Chemistry Institute of the Far Eastern Department of the Academy of Sciences, USSR, wrote that it was not possible to get an idea what the mesh is. It resembles glass carbon, but conditions leading to such formation are unknown. Definitely a common fire could not produce such glass carbon. The most mysterious aspect of the collected items was the disappearance, after vacuum melting, of gold, silver, and nickel, and the appearance-from nowhere-of molybdenum, that was not in the chamber to begin with. The only thing that could be more or less easily explained was the ash found on site. Something biological was burned during the crash. A flock of birds, perhaps, or a stray dog; or someone who was inside the crashed object? Dr. Dvuzhilni's article was published in a Soviet (Uzbekistan) Magazine NLO: Chto, Gde, Kogda?
