Ya, jangan begitulah, presiden mau rapat terbatas dimana saja kan bisa, katanya [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

[ppiindia] Benarkah Pertemuan Cikeas Batal Karena Ibunda Yudhoyono?
http://www.tempointeraktif.com/hg/politik/2010/02/23/brk,20100223-227724,id.html Benarkah Pertemuan Cikeas Batal Karena Ibunda Yudhoyono?
Said Agil Siradj (PBNU), Ulil Abshar A (NU), Yudi latif (Reform Institute), KH Nuril Arifin (NU), I Made Gde Erata (ketua umum Parisada Hindu), Johnson Panjaitan (ketua LBHI), A.A Yewangoe (ketua PGI), Adnan Buyung Nasution (mantan Wantimpres), dll Sedangkan keberhasilan- keberhasilan yang telah dicapai oleh FABB antara lain; 1. 4. September 2009, Pengadilan Tata Usaha Negara (PTUN) MEMENANGKAN pihak FABB atas sengketa melawan pengelola hiburan malam Buddha-Bar (PT. Nireta). 5. Oktober 2009, Pengadilan Tata Usaha Negara (PTUN) juga MEMENANGKAN pihak FABB atas tuntutan pemilik hiburan malam Buddha-Bar (George V-Paris). 6. 8 Februari 2010, Pengadilan Tinggi Tata Usaha Negara, Kembali MEMENAGKAN pihak FABB atas upaya banding PT Nireta atas keputusan terdahulu. Kondisi hingga saat ini, adalah; 1. Atas keputusan pengadilan tinggi, sepertinya pihak Buddha-Bar akan mengajukan Kasasi di Mahkamah Agung (MA), kita tunggu saja.
[ppiindia] rehat sosio : HARI PEREMPUAN SEDUNIA makin redup Indonesia
FLASHBACK International Women's Day -- an Occasion of Global Spirituality Dear Friends, Today is International Women's Day, a global special observance created by the United Nations.. Let us pause and reflect on the great strides that some women have made around the world, but also on the long way that we all must go to balance our social and self-government processes at every level so that women can take their vitally necessary place of respect and dignity in the world. Let us remember that the United States has still not ratified the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), and let us press forward with renewed hope that with a Democratic majority in the House and Senate and hopefully a new Democratic President in 2008, this vital piece of global legislation can finally obtain US support. Let us also mark this day with rejoicing that the UN General Assembly's president is, for the first time this year, a Muslim woman, Sheikha Haya Al Khalifa, which will go far to re-establish respect for the UN in Arab and Muslim eyes. The programs of the United Nations have been of enormous help to women, but they are not adequately funded, and 1.7 billion people, predominantly women and children, still live in poverty around the world. Below is a short speech on the occasion of International Women's Day by the Canadian ambassador the United Nations. Yours, John Dale CANADA'S U.N. AMB. JOHN McNEE ON GENDER EQUALITY AND WOMEN'S EMPOWERMENT (MaximsNews.com, U.N.) UNITED NATIONS - / www.MaximsNews.com, UN/ - 07 March 2007 -- The following statement by Ambassador John McNee, Canada's Permanent Representative to the 61st Session of the U.N. General Assembly, was presented at the informal thematic debate on Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment in New York on 06 March 2007. Today’s informal thematic debate is being held in the context of the 30th anniversary of International Women’s Day, and the important deliberations of the 51st session of the UN’s Commission on the Status of Women. Women have not yet achieved the equality envisaged by the United Nations and its Member States 30 years ago. Women and girls continue to struggle. Of the 1.3 billion people living in poverty around the world, 70 per cent are women and two-thirds of children denied primary education are girls. Violence against women and girls also continues unabated as one of the most pervasive and unrecognized human rights violations. For these reasons, the international community committed itself in 2000 to the Millennium Development Goal of promoting gender equality and empowerment of women. Since 2000, there has been increasing consensus that every single goal is related directly to women’s rights and that in societies where women are equal to men there is a much greater chance of achieving all the Millennium Development Goals. Canada, with the international community, recognizes that the Beijing Platform for Action and the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women are the global frameworks to achieving this goal. Canada supports initiatives throughout the world aimed at improving girls’ education, ending violence against women and supporting the implementation of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women. We ensure that concerns related to the equality of women and men, girls and boys are explicitly and systematically integrated in all our overseas development programming. Canada has created a framework for assessing performance on this goal and looks forward to continuing to share experiences and information on achieving results for equality of women and men, girls and boys. The theme of this year’s International Women’s Day, “Ending Impunity for Violence” sits firmly within the core values of Canada’s new government and reminds us of the persistent and unacceptable nature of violence against women and girls, and of the work that remains to be done in achieving equality of women and men, girls and boys and the empowerment of women. Canada takes seriously its commitments to ending all forms of violence against women and has taken significant steps to address questions of impunity for such crimes in our national and international work. The recent In-depth Study on Violence against Women by the United Nations Secretary-General emphasizes the need for political will and commitment at the highest levels to make strengthening prevention of and ending impunity for violence against women a priority. Canada has a strong legislative framework for protecting women and girls from violence, including domestic violence. Additionally, the Government of Canada addresses the problem of domestic violence against women and girls through the Family Violence Initiative. This initiative takes action on violence through prevention, protection and treatment programmes. The government also shares the concerns of all Canadians on the
[ppiindia] Indonesia not on visa blacklist
http://www.theaustralian.com.au/news/nation/indonesia-not-on-visa-blacklist/story-e6frg6nf-1225833627254 Indonesia not on visa blacklist Paul Maley From: The Australian February 24, 2010 12:00AM INDONESIA, the world's most populous Muslim nation and the site of more Australian deaths at the hands of terrorists than any other country, will not be included in a list of 10 countries targeted for toughened visa screening rules aimed at thwarting terror attacks. As Kevin Rudd released his government's long-awaited counter-terrorism white paper yesterday, The Australian has learnt that Indonesia, Pakistan and India will not be among the 10 countries singled out for for toughened visa screening. This is despite those countries playing host to the overwhelming number of regional terror attacks. Yemen and Somalia -- identified in the white paper as the emerging epicentres of radical Islamic terrorism -- will be included. The white paper fingers home grown extremists -- as opposed to transnational groups such as al-Qa'ida -- as the main terror threat now confronting Australia. The Prime Minister said the threat of terrorism had become a persistent and permanent feature of Australian life. The key threat comes from people who are adherents to the distorted and militant interpretation of Islam, that is espoused by groups such as al-Qa-ida, Mr Rudd said. He said $69 million would be spent over four years gathering fingerprint and facial data from visitors from 10 yet-to-be-revealed countries in an attempt to detect terrorists travelling to Australia. The biometric screening system will piggy-back a similar system already in place in Britain, which requires all people who travel to the UK on a visa to provide biometric data. A multi-agency Counter Terrorism Control Centre would also be set up within ASIO to identify intelligence priorities, the Prime Minister said. The white paper warned that Somalia and Yemen had emerged as new areas of radical Islamic terrorist activity, citing last year's thwarted plot by Somali and Lebanese extremists to attack Sydney's Holsworthy army barracks and the attempted bombing on Christmas day of a US-bound passenger jet, a plot organised by al-Qa'ida in the Arabian Peninsula. Writing in The Australian today, the Australian Security Policy Institute's Carl Ungerer welcomes the document as a modest improvement on the Howard government's 2004 white paper, which focused on foreign terrorism as the main threat. Dr Ungerer questions the spending priorities identified in the paper. If homegrown terrorism is the problem, why is border security and a better visa system for foreigners the answer? he says. Dr Ungerer says there would be little point including Indonesia and India on the list as they are not major exporters of terrorism. However, he says Pakistan should be a priority. Tony Abbott dismissed the white paper, which was released as the government sought to fend off a sustained attack on Environment Minister Peter Garrett's handling of the botched roof insulation scheme. I suspect that like everything that this Government does it will be more talk than effective action, the Opposition Leader said. [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

- AFP [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

(JG Photo/Afriadi Hikmal) Jakarta Bomb Trial Opens as Militants Arrested in Aceh The trial of a terror suspect believed to be involved in the hotel bombings in Jakarta on July 17 opened on Tuesday morning, just a few hours after four men with suspected links to the shadowy regional terror group Jemaah Islamiyah were arrested in a mountainous area in Aceh. Although it is unknown whether Jibriel secured any funding in his trip to Saudi Arabia in 2008, prosecutors charged him with hiding information about the acts of terror that resulted in the bomb explosions at the JW Marriott and Ritz-Carlton hotels, as well as document forgery. As the revelations in the Jakarta courtroom indicated that terrorists may have been planning a bigger attack than the one that took place, developments in Aceh confirmed that the threat of terrorism in the country remained despite the death of key terror leader Noordin last year. Aceh Police Chief Insp. Gen. Aditya Warman said the four men were arrested in an area believed to be a shooting range for their unidentified militant group. The arrest triggered the deployment of more than 100 officers to hunt 50 more suspected members hiding in the province's forests, including an Afghan national. A high-ranking National Police official told the Globe on condition of anonymity that police strongly suspected the group has links with Jemaah Islamiyah or even Al Qaeda. The developments came as Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd unveiled a counter-extremism white paper in Sydney on Tuesday and said his country planned to fingerprint and face-scan visitors from 10 high-risk countries to combat terrorism. Although Australian officials said they would delay naming the countries, the BBC reported that the white paper stated that despite Indonesia's recent success against terrorism, the Jakarta hotel bombings pointed to an ongoing threat there. Noor Huda Ismail, executive director of the International Institute for Peacebuilding, said Indonesia was likely to be one of the 10 countries. It's simple to see, he said. A few terrorist attacks happened in Indonesia in the past years and most of the victims were Australians. A total of 95 Australians have been killed in terrorist attacks in Indonesia since the October 2002 bombings in Bali, in which 88 Australians lost their lives. [ppiindia] MUI Says Airport Body Scanners Would Violate Human Rights
Refleksi : http://www.thejakartaglobe.com/home/mui-says-airport-body-scanners-would-violate-human-rights/360275 February 23, 2010 MUI Says Airport Body Scanners Would Violate Human Rights The Indonesian Council of Ulema (MUI) had rejected a plan to use full body scanners in Indonesian airports, claiming it would be a violation of Sharia law and human rights. Don't use it in Indonesia. We are not a paranoid or frightened country, What we are afraid of is the scanner violating human rights and being used as a toy to abuse women, Amidhan, the council's chairman, told detik.com. The council agreed with Pope Benedict's objections to full body scanners. It violates human rights. If only the bones are visible then it's all right but if it's the body then it could become a toy, Amidhan said. The MUI said that there would be one exception, however. It could only be used in emergency situations regarding national security and women should scan women and men scan men, he said. Amidhan said that he believed Indonesia was not in an emergency situation at the moment and airport security staff could still make use of other tools. As long as other equipment is available, it's not an emergency, he said. The government planned to use ProVision scanner made in USA. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs had said the scanner would not show individual's sensitive parts. At present, ProVision scanners are on trial in Canadian and French airports, while in Indonesia, the device would be used for passengers heading to the United States. (Photo: Adam Majendie, Bloomberg News) Komodo Dragon Bite Puts Man in Hospital Kupang. A tour guide is receiving emergency care at a Bali hospital after being mauled by a Komodo dragon on Monday at Komodo National Park on Rinca Island, East Nusa Tenggara. Marselinus Sabanhadir was heading for a toilet at the park when a lizard emerged from behind a guard post and sank its teeth into his leg. Tamen Sitorus, chief of Komodo National Park, said on Tuesday that Marselinus suffered deep lacerations to his right leg and had been flown to Sanglah Hospital in Denpasar for emergency medical treatment after the local clinic was unable to do much more than clean and sew up the wounds. Komodo dragons may look tame, but please be warned, they are fierce animals and very powerful, Tamen told the Jakarta Globe. I urge all visitors to be vigilant. Komodo dragons are always hungry. A visitor at the park, Valen Blikololong, questioned whether the incident wasn't caused in part by officials failing to keep to the feeding time for the lizards. Aside from carelessness [on the part of the victim], it is possible that the Komodos were simply starving and it was just their time to feed, Valen said. There have been 15 recorded Komodo dragon attacks on humans at the park, resulting in five deaths. In 2007, a lizard savaged an 8-year-old boy who died of massive blood loss. Two lizards killed fisherman Muhamad Anwar in 2009. Anwar was attacked after he fell out of a tree and was left badly bleeding from bites to his arms, legs, torso and neck. He was taken to a clinic on the neighboring island of Flores, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Monday's attack occurred during a global campaign to vote the national park as one of the new Seven Wonders of Nature. [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

The flame was temporarily relocated late December due to renovation efforts to be completed by the end of April, days ahead of the 65th anniversary of the end of World War II. Russia plans to launch large-scale celebrations in May to mark the 65th anniversary of its victory in World War II. http://news.xinhuanet.com/english2010/entertainment/2010-02/23/c_13185067.htm Superman comic sells for $1 mln 2010-02-23 19:25:26 The cover of Action Comics No. 1 featuring the first appearance of Superman in 1938. (Xinhuanet File Photo) BEIJING, Feb. 23 (Xinhuanet) -- The 1938 edition of Action Comics #1 featuring caped hero Superman has sold on the Internet for 1 million U.S. dollars, media reported Tuesday. Action Comics #1 was first published in June 1938 and introduced the crime-fighting superhero to fans, describing how he was born on a different planet and came to Earth. It also introduces his alter ego Clark Kent's love interest, Lois Lane. The transaction was held by the U.S. auction website Comic Connect. Both the seller and the buyer were unnamed. Stephen Fishler, co-owner of the website, described it as the Holy Grail of comic books. The opportunity to buy an un-restored, high-grade Action One comes along once every two decades. It's certainly a milestone, he said. The 1 million dollar price tag is more than three times the previous record of 317,000 dollars that Comic Connect fetched for a lower-grade Action Comics #1 magazine last year. There are only about 100 copies of Action Comics #1 known to exist. Of those, only two are in as good of shape as the one that sold today. It has a grade of 8.0 (out of 10) which, in comic terms is a VERY FINE MINUS grade. There are only two of these issues graded so high. Any comic from the late '30s in this condition is considered extremely valuable because of the demand and rarity. [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
[ppiindia] 17 Years for Supporting Terrorism
Untuk jelasnya silahkan lihat video footage ini : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5L-9HcTb1es http://www.aawsat.com/english/news.asp?section=2id=19973 17 Years for Supporting Terrorism 23/02/2010 By Abdul Rahman Al-Rashid In an important step on the path toward combating terrorism, a Saudi court sentenced a Saudi national convicted of inciting terrorism to seven years in prison, and sentenced another to 10 years in prison for financing acts of terrorism. Finally, the picture has become clear to everyone after years of controversy over responsibility for crimes committed under religious and political labels. The punishment for such crimes has now become heavy, and individuals are now incarcerated if they deliver speeches or write articles inciting terrorism, or alleged jihad, or donate funds to terror organizations. In the past, punishment was limited to actual perpetrators and terrorists who committed crimes. Most of the militants of Al-Qaeda were in fact victims of inciters and financiers while these and the rest of individuals in the chain of terror crimes were far from being held to account. For over 10 years, we have urged and recommended the eradication of inciters and the pursuit of funding organizations and other facades which were active in the field and which acted openly under religious, political, and jihadist slogans. When the fire reached our cities in 2003 and terrorists targeted residential complexes with their explosives, the picture became somewhat clearer. And even though fighting terrorism became official policy, the view of terrorists remained confused in the minds of the majority of people. The fall of many terrorist cells revealed a great deal of information confirming what we had been saying. Many of the calls for donations were not innocent. They were organized and a link in a long chain of terrorist crimes committed under religious and humanitarian disguise. They raised sincere calls and pictures but their purposes were far from what appeared to ordinary observers. Everyone can now see that the security agencies have succeeded in cornering and cleansing the country of terrorists. Terrorism militants have been forced to flee abroad and financiers have been forced to go underground. In the past, they used to openly collect donations for their secret organizations in the name of Muslim orphans, widows, the poor, and the destitute. Although terrorist groups fled abroad and financiers and collectors of funds have resorted to secrecy, incitement to terror has, regrettably, continued up to this day. The frequency of acts of terror has dwindled and the inciters now resort to less blunt language. And although they take advantage of times of crisis to incite terrorism, regrettably, incitement to terrorism continues to exist up to this day in non-conventional media outlets. The sentencing of a terrorism-inciter to seven years in prison is a significant step, but it is more important to publicize this punishment in order to combat terror crimes which have spread in the uncontrolled media outlets and multiple forums. The task of monitoring hundreds of websites, mosque pulpits, videotapes, and cd's, which incite violence and encourage fighting, is almost impossible. However, the fact that these acts are now regarded as crimes, and that they are being publicized as such, is at this stage enough to deter inciters who believe that terror crimes are only limited to those who carry explosives and who are involved in direct killing. The Islamic countries have lost tens of thousands of youths who believed the propaganda of inciters and joined the fight in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Somalia unaware of the nature of these organizations and their goals. Those who were lured by jihadist slogans were victims of this jihadist propaganda. If this propaganda is stopped, the large-scale of acts of terrorism we currently witness will end. Although terrorism has been defeated, it has not completely stopped. The capture of a terrorist in Yanbu last week is a case in point. Beyond the Saudi borders and the Yemeni hills are tens of terrorists, if not hundreds, are awaiting an opportunity to commit crimes. [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
[ppiindia] Look at the Quran Ringtones Fatwa
http://www.aawsat.com/english/news.asp?section=3id=19976 Look at the Quran Ringtones Fatwa 23/02/2010 By Mohammed Khalil Cairo, Asharq Al-Awsat- A new fatwa issued by the Grand Mufti of Egypt, Dr. Ali Gomaa, has fuelled controversy among Muslim scholars, dividing them into supporters and opponents of this religious ruling. The Fatwa calls for Muslims not to use Quranic verses or the call to prayer as mobile phone ringtones. Dr. Ali Gomaa stated that it is highly inappropriate to use Quranic verses as mobile phone ringtones because the sanctity and glorification of the Holy Quran is far away from such a use, which ought to be forbidden. Gomaa however indicated that it was permissible for Muslims to substitute Quranic mobile phone ringtones or the call to prayer with Islamic songs or praise of the Prophet that suit the length of the ringtone. Dr. Gomaa said that he considered the use of Quranic verses or the call to prayer as mobile phone ringtones to be a violation of the sanctity of the Holy Quran revealed by God Almighty. Egypt's Grand Mufti said We are ordered to reflect on the verses of the Holy Quran and understand their meanings.such use trivializes the sanctity of the verses, which are for prayer, invocation and recitation and are not to be used illegitimately. Dr. Gomaa argues that recitations of the Holy Quran are abruptly ended when a telephone call is answered, and this could lead to the distortion of Quranic verses meaning and could misinform the listener. Dr. Gomaa maintained that this also applies to the call to prayer. The Egyptian Grand Mufti said that it is unsuitable for the call to prayer to be used as a mobile phone ringtone because this indicates prayer times, and my cause confusion regarding the actual time for prayer. Gomaa stressed that the Word of God should be treated with the respect that it deserves. In response to the fatwa, Dr. Moahmmed al Dessouki, Professor of Islamic Shariaa at Cairo University and a member of the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, argued against the belief that using short Quranic verses or the call for prayer as mobile phone ringtones violates and demeans the sanctity of the Holy Quran. He said that this use of religious material can act as a reminder, or advocate Islam, particularly now when Islam is facing attack and censure. Dr. al Dessouki used the following Quranic verse to stress his point: And continue to remind, for surely the reminder profits the believers, [Surat Adh-Dhariyat, Verse 55]. Dr. al Dessouki further stated: Saying that answering a call might lead to interrupting the verses or distortion of their meaning or even cutting off the recitation in order to answer the telephone call is not a strong enough justification against the use of Quranic verses or the call to prayer as mobile phone ringtones simply because the verses that are used as ringtones are usually short ones. Moreover, we should not preoccupy people with such trivial issues. Instead, we should focus on issuing fatwas that tackle more important matters that require the concerted efforts of Muslim scholars. Scholars should not disagree over secondary issues. It would be more beneficial to concentrate on more important matters like reminding people of religious fundamentals so that they try to adhere to them in a practical and faithful manner. Scholars should also encourage people to try and face serious problems like family breakdown, unemployment, extremism and militancy and other important matters. However, Sheikh Youssef el Badri, an Islamic preacher and a member of the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, supports the fatwa issued by Egypt's Grand Mufti. Sheikh el Badri said, The Holy Quran was not revealed to serve as a decoration on a wall or a mobile phone ring tone. The sanctity and glory of the Holy Quran must be protected against misuse. Therefore, it is prohibited to use Quranic verses or the call to prayer as mobile phone ringtones because answering a call could lead to an abrupt end to the recitation of the Holy verses and distortion of their meaning or even to their alteration once someone presses the button to answer a call. For instance, look at a Quranic verse like 'Ta Ha. We have not sent down the Quran to thee to be an occasion for thy distress. [Surat Ta-Ha; verse 1-2].' If we cut off right after 'Ta Ha, We have not sent down the Quran to thee.' the whole meaning is altered to convey a misleading message that the Holy Quran was not revealed. Sheikh el Badri pointed out that the same rule also applies to the call to prayer. If a mobile phone ring tone is set as the call to prayer, some might think that it is actually time to pray and this could create confusion. It is worth mentioning that during a meeting last month the Islamic Research Academy that is led by the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, Sheikh Mohammed Sayyid Tantawi, issued a fatwa prohibiting the use of Quranic verses as

[ppiindia] Why did Extremism Lose?
http://www.aawsat.com/english/news.asp?section=2id=19979 Why did Extremism Lose? 23/02/2010 By Ali Ibrahim The front cover of the latest issue of Newsweek magazine includes a provocative headline that arouses a number of questions, most importantly the question How did Bin Laden lose the clash of civilizations? The idea behind the lengthy article written by Fareed Zakaria [The Jihad Against the Jihadis] is that the greatest danger from the September 11 attacks was the eruption of a bloody clash of civilizations had Al Qaeda managed to attract a significant proportion of the one and a half billion Muslims worldwide to its ideology. However now, almost 9 years after the attacks, we can see that the extremist ideology has only managed to attract a limited number of supporters, and the majority of Muslims remain moderate in their ideology rejecting violence and terrorism, and supporting dialogue among civilizations rather than clash of civilizations. A lot of effort has been exerted, particularly in Muslim countries, to combat extremist ideology and terrorists groups either through security measures against armed groups or groups that incite violence, or through ideological efforts to disseminate ideas that counter and defeat such ideology and keep this away from mainstream moderate Islam. Many mistakes have taken place in the policies of some countries or with regards to the announcement of a war on terror which has allowed terrorism to be confused with Islam and in some cases provided the extremist groups with the propaganda and provocation they required. However there is always a safety net that is able to defeat groups such groups the likes of which have appeared from time to time throughout history. This safety net is the simple fact that human nature tends towards reason and dialogue, and looks at what unites us rather than what divides us, in order to build for the future. This is something that Muslims and followers of other religion and culture have in common. This does not refute the fact that extremist groups remain active and represent a genuine terrorist threat and may be responsible for tragic attacks [in the future]. A recent example of this was the Nigerian student who attempted to blow up a US jetliner, and failed not because of the vigilance of the security apparatus but because of the bravery and quick reactions of the passengers. This is evidence that ordinary people are fed up with the series of terrorism attacks and are now prepared to respond to this. Al Qaeda and the groups that follow this ideology continue to be active in certain areas of tension in order to create larger instability with which they can utilize to gain a foothold in Afghanistan, Pakistan, or Yemen. However in the end this is something that remains confined to a narrow group of individuals who conspire in dark rooms to detonate a bomb here or there, or blow up an airplane, whilst in most cases their recruits are youths who suffer from psychological problems or weaknesses that allow them to be exploited. However this extremist ideology was only successful in attracting a handful of people to a small number of [extremist] groups, and this is something that will not be successful in the future for one simple reason, this extremist ideology has nothing to offer other than violence and bloodshed. It is for this reason that we see many religious extremists turning their back on this ideology and condemning it. We also see many preachers who were previously sympathetic to this ideology distancing themselves from this bloody trend after they became aware that those who propagate this ideology are only concerned with creating chaos. Does this mean the end of the battle to win hearts and minds avoid a clash of civilizations? Of course not, this only necessitates more effective international cooperation with regards to dialogue and understanding differences and plurality of cultures and civilizations, and building on the things that we share in common.

[ppiindia] Importance Of Teen Sex Education
Importance Of Teen Sex Education http://www.worldofestudy.com/hm/Sex-Education-for-Teens.html This makes it all the more important to provide kids with the requisite sex education at schools as a part of the regular school curriculum. The curriculum for sex education should so be designed that it encompasses a wide range of human relationships, including sex. It is advisable to begin sex education at a very early stage of the education process. Information can be provided in small doses and in simple ways. More http://www.worldofestudy.com/hm/Sex-Education-for-Teens.html A concentric mode of education can be adopted where the kids are exposed to more information on sex education each year. As a result of sex education, kids come to recognize sex as something very natural and do not consider it a taboo any more, nor are they extra inquisitive about topics related to sex. So, when kids become teenagers, sex is not something they would spend too much time dwelling on. Instead, the teens would spend their time on other activities. [ppiindia] Under the world's greatest cities, deadly plates
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/02/22/AR2010022204828.html?wpisrc=nl_pmheadline Under the world's greatest cities, deadly plates By Joel Achenbach Washington Post Staff Writer Tuesday, February 23, 2010 Megacities are something new on the planet. Earthquakes are something very old. The two are a lethal combination, as seen in the recent tragedy in Port-au-Prince, where more than 200,000 people perished -- a catastrophe that scientists say is certain to be repeated somewhere, and probably soon, with death tolls that once again stagger the mind. In 1800, there was just one city with more than a million people -- Beijing. Now there are 381 urban areas with at least 1 million inhabitants. Urbanization crossed a threshold last year when, for the first time, more people lived in city settings than rural ones. About 403 million people live in cities that face significant seismic hazard, according to a recent study by seismologist Roger Bilham of the University of Colorado. The next Big One could strike Tokyo, Istanbul, Tehran, Mexico City, New Delhi, Kathmandu or the two metropolises near California's San Andreas Fault, Los Angeles and San Francisco. Or it could devastate Dhaka, Jakarta, Karachi, Manila, Cairo, Osaka, Lima or Bogota. The list goes on and on. You can name about 25 cities that are like Port-au-Prince. They're not going to shake but every 250 years [on average]. But if you can name 25 of them, you're going to have an event like this every 10 years, said David Wald, a seismologist with the U.S. Geological Survey. In many vulnerable cities, people are effectively stacked on top of one another in buildings designed as if earthquakes don't happen. It is not the tremor that kills people in an earthquake but the buildings, routinely constructed on the cheap, using faulty designs and, in some cities, overseen by corrupt inspectors. The difference between life and death is often a matter of how much sand went into the concrete or how much steel into a supporting column. Earthquakes might be viewed as acts of God, but their lethality is often a function of masonry. In recent earthquakes, buildings have acted as weapons of mass destruction, Bilham writes in the journal Nature. Difficult to predict For years, earthquake scientists have shouted their warnings about the strong likelihood that a major quake would level an impoverished city and kill hundreds of thousands of people. They have said, for example, that Kathmandu, where masonry structures expand so haphazardly that some eventually cantilever over narrow city streets, is every bit as vulnerable as the surrounding Himalayas are majestic. They have said that a million people could die in a major quake in Tehran. What's impossible, however, is knowing precisely which of these cities will be the next to crumble. Or when. For all practical purposes, scientists can't predict earthquakes. The theory of plate tectonics, largely developed since the 1960s, explains why earthquakes happen in general. The major plates of the earth's crust move constantly, creeping along at about the speed of fingernail growth. They rarely move smoothly past one another but are usually locked in place. On a strike-slip fault of the type that ruptured in Haiti, strain builds on the fault line for decades or centuries. The fault in Haiti had not ruptured in 240 years. An earthquake is a sudden, stress-relieving event. The fault is said to break. Scientists can map faults and estimate how much strain has accumulated since the last quake. What they can't do is say that a given fault will break tomorrow or next year or 10 years from now. Any calculation of earthquake probabilities has a lot of slop in the numbers. The problem is, the slop is huge on a human time scale, said Susan Hough, a seismologist with the U.S. Geological Survey. We're wired to deal with the immediate. We're not geared to plan and stress about things likely to happen in 30 years. Some large earthquakes have small precursors, called foreshocks, but others happen without warning. There is one famous case of earthquake prediction, in Haicheng, China, in 1975. A local official sounded the alarm after many foreshocks and reports of snakes emerging from hibernation. But that prediction was more akin to a hunch than a scientific argument. There have been countless, less publicized instances when predicted earthquakes did not materialize. As Hough notes in her book Predicting the Unpredictable, the successful prediction of earthquakes was an official government mandate in Mao Zedong's China, but no one foresaw the killer quake that took at least 240,000 lives in Tangshan in 1976. Port-au-Prince had not been hit with a major quake since the days of French rule in the 18th century. Only in recent years have scientists mapped the fault that runs near the city. Just the beginning of work had been done.
[ppiindia] Kasus Pembredelan Radio Erabaru FM Batam Terkini
From: Erabarufm erabar...@gmail.com Date: Wednesday, February 24, 2010, 12:20 PM Kepada : Yth. Terlampir pula foto-foto tentang Radio Erabaru Batam.
[ppiindia] Dinasti Politik Lokal Makin Kental
Sepanjang 2010, tak kurang 244 pemilu kepala daerah (pilkada) bakal digelar, sekaligus menguji kelangsungan daya saing politisi bersentimen kekerabatan. Di Yogyakarta, Sri Suryawidati, istri Bupati Bantul dua periode, Idham Samawi, maju jadi calon bupati, meneruskan kursi suami. Di Kalimantan Timur (Kaltim), Awang Ferdian Hidayat, putra gubernur setempat, Awang Farouk, mencalonkan diri jadi Bupati Kutai Kartanegara (Kukar), bersaing dengan Rita Widyasari, anak mantan Bupati Kukar, Syaukani. Golkar Kota Bontang, Kaltim, jauh-jauh hari sudah menetapkan Neni Moernaeni, istri Wali Kota Bontang, Sofyan Hasdam, untuk menggantikan sang suami pada pilkada 2011. Neni kini menjadi Ketua DPRD Bontang, sekaligus pengontrol kinerja suami. Aida Nasution, istri pertama Kepulauan Riau, Ismeth Abdullah, maju jadi calon gubernur setempat, melanjutkan kursi suami. Ismeth bakal kesulitan maju lagi karena sejak Desember lalu ditetapkan menjadi tersangka oleh Komisi Pemberantasan Korupsi (KPK). Lampung juga disesaki persaingan putra tokoh politik. Rycko Menoza, anak Gubernur Lampung, Sjachroedin, mengincar kursi Bupati Lampung Selatan. Di Way Kanan, putra bupati setempat, Agung Ilmu Mangkunegara, bersiap meneruskan kekuasaan sang ayah. Artinya, bila pemilih kepala daerah masih mempertimbangkan sentimen kekerabatan, begitu pula pemilih caleg. Sang suami, I Gede Winasa, jadi Bupati Jembrana, Bali. Istrinya, Ratna Ani Lestari, jadi Bupati Banyuwangi, Jawa Timur. I Gede Winasa terpilih sampai dua periode (2000-2010).
