Dear Colleagues,
there are few seats left for the

*"GEO-OPEN-HACK-2024: Big Geospatial Data Hackathon

the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) in
Laxenburg, Austria.

This event will push the geo-computation to the next level, dealing with
HPC and cloud solutions for handling massive geo-data. The hackathon is
designed for on-site attendance and you on-line, nonetheless the on-site
will gain the most from direct interaction with both instructors and the
class peers.

Please forward to announce these opportunities within your network. I wish
to have such courses during my Ph.D.!!

Sincerely,

I read the following in the manual
“Depending on the format of the data and the GDAL library built with your QGIS
version, some tools may not be available.”

Is the attribute table you wish to edit reading from a CSV or similar? I would
Save_as a shapefile or geopackage layer and work from that.

Re: [Qgis-user] Georeferencing Raster

2024-03-18 Per discussione Patrick Dunford via QGIS-User
When you are replying to a digest, kindly observe standard netiquette
and only quote the part of the digest message that is relevant to the
discussion.

Any activity that involves processing raster images is by definition
much more resource intensive than editing vector layers. When you are
drawing maps, most of the layers you are likely to be working with are
vectors. It is inevitable your system will be much more impacted in
performance when processing the raster data than it is for drawing
vector layers. The onus is basically on you to ensure you are using a
computer system that has good performance specifications.

Hello all,

my collegue got some trouble with georeferencing raster images. As soon as he
activates the tool ?LAYER >> GEOREFERENCING? his system gets very, very
slw. It takes plenty of time even to open the raster image and then to set
referencing points. While changing the windows between Map and Referencing Tool the
windows are getting grey and show ?No response?. In the end he doesn?t know wheter
the system is still running or ?died? along the way.
I installed QGIS Version 3.34.4 now, but it ist he same behaviour as in hil
older version 3.16.
Is there maybe a special setting, that can be changed to get a better
performance?

Best regards, Michaela

Nice attitude, Hannes :-)
Yes, totally true about the AI trap. You can't write a program by
handing the logic over to a "well read entity"

I use it when my mind is plain out of google keywords.
In maybe half a dozen attempts with AI, I have only hit gold once.

Thanks for the links.

Zoltan

Hi Zoltan,

the most important thing first: Don't fall into the "AI can program"
mindset trap. You *will* end up with nonsense like this if you do.
Those tools can often hallucinate non-existent APIs and mislead you.
They might work for some more basic or wide-spread code bases but so
far I have seen very bad results for PyQGIS. Best search the web using
"pyqgis" as additional keyword to your query.

As https://qgis.org/pyqgis/3.34/core/QgsProcessing.html says, that
class only contains data to be used by Processing things. It is not
your entry point into using Processing via Python.

For that please see
https://docs.qgis.org/3.34/en/docs/user_manual/processing/console.html
, written by actual, smart humans ;)

And for the Batch file: Don't write your own, QGIS comes with a
perfect one already, called |python-qgis[-ltr].bat| . See e.g.
https://gis.stackexchange.com/a/428577/51035

Cheers and good luck!

Hi,
Apologies for asking help on what hopefully might turn out to be

There are 2 questions in this email:

I have a Windows 11 OSGEO4W installation QGIS 3.36.0 and grass (and
more).
I use PyCharm 2023.3.4 (Community Edition) - but not yet configured
"nicely" for QGIS as I am mostly in a non-Open Source environment.
Most of the stuff I write is python is for "problem fixes" and these
python scripts ideally run on a windows command-line with a BAT file.

So, in this scenario below, I keep getting:       . *has no
attribute 'run'
*This whether I am running inside PyCharm or on the command-line
through below batch job.

*Question #1*
*What is the correct bat file structure for running python scripts?*
I currently have [below] but is it optimal?

SET QGIS_PATH=C:\OSGeo4W\apps\qgis
call "C:\OSGeo4W\bin\o4w_env.bat"
SET PYTHONPATH=%QGIS_PATH%\python;%PYTHONPATH%
SET PATH=%QGIS_PATH%\bin;%PATH%
C:\OSGeo4W\apps\Python39\python.exe
Z:\Projects\Development\python_QGIS\qgis_tests\qgisrun.py
pause

*Question #2*
I have tried many various import options, but I cannot get past the
*has no attribute 'run'*  error from python below code:
Minimalst as this code is, it should run without adding anything
else, should it?

from qgis.core import QgsProcessing
shp_inErfPoly = 'Z:\\Erven_1February2024.shp'
shp_outErfFix = 'Z:\\Erven_1February2024_FixGeo.shp'
QgsProcessing.run("native:fixgeometries", { 'INPUT':
shp_inErfPoly, 'METHOD': 1,  'OUTPUT': shp_outErfFix})

Some pointers on what to do or where to read would be great.

Thanks in advance,
Zoltan

the following warning: 'projection name Oblique_Stereographic in not part of

Followed by a number of errors:

I also get this warning when I use other commands.

Before, I could run these commands without getting these warning and errors.
What do the warning and errors mean, and how can I fix it?

[Qgis-user] r.neighbors- not responding

2024-03-17 Per discussione Langers, Fransje via QGIS-User
I work with QGIS 3.34.
I have a raster input file, with cell size 5*5m, and with values 1 and 0.
I want to use r.neighbors (operation average), .

When I choose a small neighborhood size of 3, everything goes fine.

For my analyses I need to choose a neighborhood size of 49 (representing a 250m
diameter).
It seems this operation is too large, as I get no result (not responding). What
can I do?

There is a discussion on StackOverflow that sounds like what you want to
do. Looks like there are some good ideas there.

[Qgis-user] Digitizing annoyance

2024-03-15 Per discussione Byron Veilleux via QGIS-User
When I am digitizing simple contours, I am finding that after editing and
saving the layer, I end up with duplicate contours, one of which I must
delete or the labels look silly. Any idea why this might be happening?

Is there a way to edit an attribute table, I want to change or delete a
few points or labels without having to do it in the csv file

Hi,
I'm doing a map in a territorial scale (1:5.000) and I'd like to show only
the name of the street do not intersect any geometry of the buildings (in
one specific layer).
Try to image I have layer road (axes of the roads - lines) and buildings
(polygons).

I was trying to play with Labels>Placement>*Obtacles *but I'm not having
any luck.

[Qgis-user] Problem with QGIS: Form uniform groups/clusters from a large point data set

2024-03-15 Per discussione Dr.-Ing. Maren van der Meer via QGIS-User
Hello everyone,
I'm facing a problem that I can't wrap my head around:
I have a population dataset in the form of dots. Each point represents one
inhabitant within an imaginary grid cell of 100x100 meters. For example, if
there are 37 inhabitants living in one grid cell, there are 37 points on top of
each other. (The data set is quite large and contains about 4 million points)
I would like to divide the point data set into groups of equal size. It is
important that the groups are really the same size. (Clustering using k-means
etc. does not work for me...)
I am also faced with the problem that I would like to try out different
variants of group formation. For example: Does it make a difference if I start
the grouping in the north, south or west of the points? Does anyone know a
(preferably automated) method of group formation?
I hope I have been able to describe my problem sufficiently and would be very
happy to receive help and tips.
Kind regards,
Maren van der Meer

Re: [Qgis-user] Multiple styles saved in database, how to choose one?

2024-03-15 Per discussione Richard Duivenvoorde via QGIS-User

Ah! Thanks, found it now! I was apparently to eager to find a dropdown
somewhere in my UI :-)

Besides your solution you also get the list in a little table when you go to
the Layer Styling Panel, select the 'Style Manager' tab there and the choose
'Load style', and then select the 'From datasource database' option...

Regards,

Richard Duivenvoorde

PS: still would like to restructure the style menu a little: maybe add the
option Copy All STyle Categories (so no need to open the next level), and 'Use
Style' (only in case there are saved styles in the db... But: future :-)

Re: [Qgis-user] How to catch a QgsMapCanvas::emitExtentsChanged-signal?

2024-03-15 Per discussione Ludwig Kniprath via QGIS-User

Hi Bernhard, what about

iface.mapCanvas().extentsChanged.connect(lambda: print("the extent has
changed!!!"))

Or something more usefull like

def extent_has_changed_slot():
    print(iface.mapCanvas().extent())

iface.mapCanvas().extentsChanged.connect(extent_has_changed_slot)

Btw, the *signal* is 'extentsChanged', 'emitExtentsChanged' is a
*function*, which will trigger the emit of the signal.

So:

a) 'xxx' ist the signal-object, above 'iface.mapCanvas().extentsChanged'

b) extentsChanged is a signal without parameters, signals with
parameters can be used in slot-functions with appropriate signatures.

Below a sample for a signal with parameters, see
https://api.qgis.org/api/classQgsMapCanvas.html#a6c6f74644c9b273917a29e77b6400e89

def map_tool_was_set_slot(new_tool,old_tool):
    print(new_tool,old_tool)

iface.mapCanvas().mapToolSet.connect(map_tool_was_set_slot)

[Qgis-user] Multiple styles saved in database, how to choose one?

2024-03-15 Per discussione Richard Duivenvoorde via QGIS-User

Hi,

I'm busy loading a lot of datasets in a Postgis database.

For vectordata it is possible to save the QGIS style IN the database.
Off course you can save several styles for the same table in the database.
But I fail to find a way to choose between those.

Am I missing an option? Or is this not yet implemented?
(would be cool to have it in Browser too :-) )

Thanks in advance,

You are welcome. I suggest you to also ensure that the "Default output vector
layer extension" is set to the value "gpkg" (GeoPackage), since I guess it is
probably also incorrectly set to the "xtf" value which will also lead to issues
with the GDAL processing algorithms having vector layer as output.

Since I suppose you have not intentionally set such options (like many other
users experiencing similar issues), it would be very useful if you could
remember what have you done after the last time the algorithm worked without
issues and the first time it didn't work: have you upgraded / downgraded QGIS,
or installed / uninstalled any plugin or used an older version and a newer
version of QGIS with the same QGIS user profile, or...?

Every detail would help to find the root cause of the issue and try to
permanently fix it.

Best regards.

[Qgis-user] Georeferencing Raster

2024-03-15 Per discussione Huesmann, Michaela via QGIS-User
Hello all,

my collegue got some trouble with georeferencing raster images. As soon as he
activates the tool „LAYER >> GEOREFERENCING“ his system gets very, very
slw. It takes plenty of time even to open the raster image and then to set
referencing points. While changing the windows between Map and Referencing Tool
the windows are getting grey and show „No response“. In the end he doesn‘t know
wheter the system is still running or „died“ along the way.
I installed QGIS Version 3.34.4 now, but it ist he same behaviour as in hil
older version 3.16.
Is there maybe a special setting, that can be changed to get a better
performance?

Best regards, Michaela

Hi Fransje,
it looks like the issue is very likely due to the fact that the "Default
output raster layer extension" (in
Settings->Options->Processing->General) has been set to the value "nc"
(i.e. "netCDF" format").
May you check? If it is the case, have you set such option for a reason
or haven't you set it? If the latter, the you can fix the issue just
setting the "Default output raster layer extension" to the "tif" (i.e.
GeoTIFF) value, which is the default value for such option.

"ERROR 4: No such file or directory".

Hi Grant,
in order to fix the issue, you just need to change the "Default output
vector layer extension" (in Settings->Options->Processing->General) for
your QGIS user settings to a value other than "xtf": I suggest the value
"gpkg" (GeoPackage) which is the default for such option.

I also suggest you to also change the "Default output raster layer
extension" to "tif", which probably may be also incorrectly set to "nc"
in your QGIS user settings.

The only difference is that in your example you have /vsimem/xxx.tif.
There are no double quotes so I do not know if you are using a path
variable or similar.  I would try an actual path to the tif dem file.

I did this yesterday and it worked fine for me, but my command has:

  -f "SQLite" /tmp/xxx/OUTPUT.sqlite

Instead of the -f parameter in your screenshots. I'm not sure how to
change this - can you see any options that let you select this output
format?

I am just wondering whether the two formats you've selected need
additional parameters. The SQLite format appears not to need anything
else.

Cheers,
Adam.

Hi,

you can use the DB Manager for custom layer queries. You can create SQL queries
and add those to the layer tree, more information can be found here
https://docs.qgis.org/3.34/en/docs/user_manual/plugins/core_plugins/plugins_db_manager.html

And of course, ordering queries based on custom criteria can be done there via
ORDER BY clause ...

Ok so you are sorting a text file, presumably something like a .CSV. Perhaps

What are your options to sort the file before you put it in QGIS? It seems

polygon, line attribute table? Or some .csv layer? Or...?

And how did you sort it? Opened it in the attribute table editor and clicked

Maybe you could also tell us what you're trying to achieve by sorting?

Hello Michael,

How did you sort the columns? If you have ordered them in the QGIS attribute
table, they will not change their order when you export them. For this, you
must use the "Refactor Fields" tool.

I have a PostgreSQL database of several million points with

according to a number of shapes (hexagons, circles or squares) per mesh,
calculate the number of points per shape and color the shape darker as
there are points underneath. If there are no points the shape should not
appear. If we zoom in, the meshes must be recalculated and reduced of
course. On the other hand I would like a leaflet basemap.

Can you set the annotation to show HTML then use an "img" tag to show
an image that's saved in your project folder? e.g.

You may not be able to show TIFFs, but if you convert them to .png or
.jpg then it should work.

I haven't tried this with annotation layers but it works in map tips to
have an image appear when you hover over a feature.

A quick Google suggests annotation layers have the option to render HTML
so I would imagine it would work there too.

Cheers,
Adam.

Re: [Qgis-user] Adding a Web map to QGIS

Hi Krishna,

Can you not ask them to turn on the WFS service in their ARC setup? Unless,
like many govt agencies, they just ignore users requests. Sigh.

Another option is to look for the data you want in data.gov. I have found that
govt agencies often have strange & limited access to their data in-house, but
also provide their data to data.gov, where it is more accessible.

Hi Krishna
It looks like it is coming from the FCC Broadband
Service<https://www.arcgis.com/home/search.html?restrict=false=relevance=desc=tags%3A%22Federal+Communications+Commission%22#content>
 so you can sift through their data and find what you need and link to it via
your browser. It looks like the data is more in Tables so will need to play
with them and link them into the Block Groups I think.
I saw this stack overflow about it as well :

[Qgis-user] How to modify (individual) marker properties for a vector layer with many points

2024-03-11 Per discussione AFernandez via QGIS-User

Hello,
My code is using the following snippet to plot a vector layer:
vl = QgsVectorLayer("Point", "RadiusField", "memory")
pr = vl.dataProvider()
pr.addAttributes([QgsField("name", QVariant.String),
   QgsField("radius", QVariant.Double)])
vl.updateFields()
for idx in range(self.nx):
for idy in range(self.ny):
f = QgsFeature()

f.setGeometry(QgsGeometry.fromPointXY(QgsPointXY(self.phalanx[idx,idy,0],self.phalanx[idx,idy,1])))

punctum = "point_" + str(idx) + "_" + str(idy)
f.setAttributes([punctum, 1.0])
pr.addFeature(f)
vl.updateExtents()
symbol = QgsMarkerSymbol.createSimple({'name': 'circle',
'color': 'yellow'})

vl.renderer().setSymbol(symbol)
vl.triggerRepaint()
QgsProject.instance().addMapLayer(vl)
This plots yellow circles of the same radius at all points as expected.
What I'd like the code to do next is to plot each individual circle with
specific properties. For example, the following modified snippet tries
rendering inside the loop:

vl = QgsVectorLayer("Point", "RadiusField", "memory")
pr = vl.dataProvider()
pr.addAttributes([QgsField("name", QVariant.String),
   QgsField("radius", QVariant.Double)])
vl.updateFields()
for idx in range(self.nx):
for idy in range(self.ny):
f = QgsFeature()

f.setGeometry(QgsGeometry.fromPointXY(QgsPointXY(self.phalanx[idx,idy,0],self.phalanx[idx,idy,1])))

punctum = "point_" + str(idx) + "_" + str(idy)
f.setAttributes([punctum, 1.0])
pr.addFeature(f)
if (idx % 2 == 0) and (idy % 2 == 0):
symbol = QgsMarkerSymbol.createSimple({'name':
'circle', 'color': 'yellow'})

elif (idx % 2 == 0):
symbol = QgsMarkerSymbol.createSimple({'name':
'circle', 'color': 'red'})

elif (idy % 2 == 0):
symbol = QgsMarkerSymbol.createSimple({'name':
'circle', 'color': 'green'})

else:
symbol = QgsMarkerSymbol.createSimple({'name':
'circle', 'color': 'pink'})

vl.renderer().setSymbol(symbol)
vl.triggerRepaint()
vl.updateExtents()
QgsProject.instance().addMapLayer(vl)
However, this results in the same output as it repaints everything with
the latter symbol (not to mention that replotting the whole vector layer
over & over becomes expensive).
My main question is whether this is a workable approach (and I need to
figure out how to render marker by marker) or if I should consider using
other classes. I was thinking that maybe QgsMarkerSymbolLayer could be
of use for this problem, but the example from the PyQGIS
DeveloperCookbook seems to use it for constructing new symbols, not to
have variations of the same symbol while drawing many of them. Thanks.

[Qgis-user] QtWidgets.QFileDialog.getSaveFileName make qgis crash on windows 10

Hi,
with qgis 3.34 with a processing script in pythonthe use of the dialog
box QtWidgets.QFileDialog.getSaveFileNamemakes qgis crash on windows 10
and not on windows 11.
Maybe because the dialog is initiated in C/Program Files\QGIS 3.34.4\bin
which is a protected folder?I tried to set the document folder as
default, but same crash.

the code :
 output_file_name = input_featuresource.sourceName() + '.kml'

output_file_path, _ = QtWidgets.QFileDialog.getSaveFileName(None,
"Exporter les polygones au format KML",

output_file_name,
  "Fichiers KML (*.kml)")
I try this with the same crash when i click "Enregistrer"
 output_file_name = input_featuresource.sourceName() + '.kml'
 default_directory = os.path.join(os.path.expanduser("~"), "Documents")
output_file_path, _ = QtWidgets.QFileDialog.getSaveFileName(None,

[Qgis-user] editing and saving very large table

2024-03-11 Per discussione Michael.Dodd via QGIS-User
I have a very large (5 million rows) table in qgis and have sorted some of the
columns etc and want to save the sorted version but whatever format I try
(.csv, geopackage or other formats) it just saves the original order not the
sorted order. It also will not allow me to click the button to ‘save edits’
whether or not the table is editable. Trying to copy large chunks of the data
out by highlighting it in sorted order is also very flaky – occasionally it
works but most often does not.

I know a database would be more suitable for doing this but I want to know if
this is possible in qgis itself or is simply impossible.

[Qgis-user] "QgsProcessing" has no attribute 'run' (same for 'processing')

2024-03-11 Per discussione Zoltan Szecsei via QGIS-User

Hi,
Apologies for asking help on what hopefully might turn out to be
trivial, but I am pretty much blue in the face googling and asking
Gemini for help.

There are 2 questions in this email:

I have a Windows 11 OSGEO4W installation QGIS 3.36.0 and grass (and more).

*This whether I am running inside PyCharm or on the command-line through
below batch job.

*Question #1*
*What is the correct bat file structure for running python scripts?*
I currently have [below] but is it optimal?

   SET QGIS_PATH=C:\OSGeo4W\apps\qgis
   call "C:\OSGeo4W\bin\o4w_env.bat"
   SET PYTHONPATH=%QGIS_PATH%\python;%PYTHONPATH%
   SET PATH=%QGIS_PATH%\bin;%PATH%
   C:\OSGeo4W\apps\Python39\python.exe
   Z:\Projects\Development\python_QGIS\qgis_tests\qgisrun.py
   pause

*Question #2*
I have tried many various import options, but I cannot get past the *has
no attribute 'run'*  error from python below code:
Minimalst as this code is, it should run without adding anything else,
should it?

   from qgis.core import QgsProcessing
   shp_inErfPoly = 'Z:\\Erven_1February2024.shp'
   shp_outErfFix = 'Z:\\Erven_1February2024_FixGeo.shp'
   QgsProcessing.run("native:fixgeometries", { 'INPUT': shp_inErfPoly,
   'METHOD': 1,  'OUTPUT': shp_outErfFix})

Some pointers on what to do or where to read would be great.

Thanks in advance,
Zoltan

See
https://github.com/qgis/QGIS/blob/master/python/plugins/MetaSearch/dialogs/manageconnectionsdialog.py#L99
MetaSearch saves the connections in the 'MetaSearch' node in QGIS.ini

You can either edit the .ini file, or you can view it via Options/Advanced (and
do NOT use the 'new settings tree widget').
See screenshot.

Not sure how this could vanish.
Maybe you create a new profile?
Or did that QGIS.ini file got corrupt (not very likely)?

(to check: create a new/fresh profile and use the 'Add default services' to
have that list, and then look into the settings.

I noticed that by modifying
the FileGDBs created by ArcGIS PRO in QGIS:
1. saving is particularly slow;
2. I often lose data, i.e. if I have an active data selection and I try to
update only the selection, QGIS updates the entire dataset resulting in
data loss.

Hi Totò,
as you already know, QGIS handles ESRI File Geodatabase layer via the
GDAL/OGR library.
The GDAL/OGR library has two different drivers for the ESRI File
Geodatabase forma: the built-int driver "OpenFileGDB" [1] (which is
available on all systems) and the "FileGDB" driver (available on Windows
through OSGeo4W) which depends on the ESRI FileGDB API SDK [2].

Using which driver does the issue occurs?

How do you update the data?

I think you should inform the GDAL/OGR developers about the issue. Since
you experience the issue often, it shouldn't be so difficult to provide
a sample ESRI File Geodatabase layer and exact steps in order to
replicate the issue.

Best regards.

Andrea Giudiceandrea

This could be one solution, although it might be a bit harder to
control the upload settings (because you are trying to upload GeoJSON
as the "wrong" MIME type) so it may stop other programs from
recognising the files properly as well.

Another solution is to work out how to tell the browser or OS that
"application/geo+json" should be downloaded rather than viewed.

I always had trouble getting this to work properly as it seems to be
handled quite differently for each OS (e.g. with Firefox on Linux the
settings are in the browser but on Windows it uses the same settings as
Windows Explorer).

For years I used a Firefox extension that overrode the standard
settings and forced most files to be downloaded instead of viewed. You
might just have to Google a bit to see if you can work out which
settings to change to get a given MIME type (like
"application/geo+json") to download instead of open.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help!

Cheers,
Adam.

> What are the minimum and recommended hardware requirements for QGIS?

For normal application use, a computer that's less than 10 years old is
probably fine. I'm running it on a second hand office Dell from 2017
with no issues at all. If your computer is capable of viewing modern
web sites then it is capable of running QGIS quite well.

These days computers are so fast that outside of some specific fields,
pretty much any computer will do the job for most things.

QGIS is not a particularly demanding application as far as these things
go.

> What type of graphics card is required/recommended: OpenGL (Open Graphics

If you use any of these things for your work, you will already know
exactly what you need. If you have to ask the question, then you are
unlikely to need particular support for these technologies.

The aforementioned Dell I am using does not have a dedicated video card
and is using Intel onboard graphics (one of the most basic setups you
can get), and it works just fine with QGIS.

Adam.

I think this is probably down to the configuration of the web browser
and/or the operating system.

It's been a while, but you used to be able to configure "helper
applications" in the browser settings that controlled what action
happens when you open certain files. I guess on one system it has set
up GeoJSON as a text file but you want to change it to a
binary/download instead.

Alternatively when it opens up as a text file you can just save that
(e.g. through the File menu) as it will give you the same result.

The mask option is great but if you cannot use it, I often grab a color

so sometimes dark and sometimes light.

Re: [Qgis-user] Atlas printing to PDF

2024-03-07 Per discussione Emma Hain via QGIS-User
Hi Springfield
I know lack of time is crazy - but the question here is, will I be using
this product over and over again? If that is the case, then I would
recommend rebuilding it from scratch if testing the old one fails.

Here are some possible options to follow to get to the bottom of this. The
first should  take no time.

First, let's start clean and create a new QGIS profile
<https://www.northrivergeographic.com/qgis-profiles/> in your current QGIS
and open your product and run it. Are the glitches still there? If so, then
it could be your content. If not, then this is an easy fix and you can run
your product.

Test to see if you can get away with dragging in the old project into the
new version and making a few changes. See how it performs and if there are
still glitches, you will need to work out where the glitches are coming
from.

Are they hiding in the template? Test to see if when you bring it in, in a
completely clean environment, add in data you wouldn't normally use and run
it. If there are no glitches here, then is it something in or associated
with your data.

Test the data in a clean environment without the template to see how it
performs.

In regards to the workflow I proposed, you can drag in the data from your
old project with all the trimmings if you access it under the old project
in the Browser window. You can then recreate the Layout using the template.
There are other workarounds too by saving the data as .sld files but as I
am writing this, I am really feeling for you.

I hope this helps, and you can get your product out.

Cheers
Em

2024-03-07 Per discussione Nigel Berjak - General via QGIS-User

Hi Spring

I think that, if I am understanding Emma's workflow correctly, you do
not need to recreate the entire project, only the layout part. If I have
misunderstood, I would first try loading the same project, then creating
a new layout from the template, then reincorporating all the various
settings. If this works, it would save a lot of time.

It sounds like there are some buggy things happening in the background,
so maybe you need a clean version.

If this was me, I would follow this workflow.

* Open up in the original version and create a .qpt from the print
layout

* Create a new product in the latest LTR

* Locate the old project in the Browser window

* Expand that project and drag the files into the new product.

* In the print layout:

* load the qpt
* Copy over the Atlas parameters from your old product (you can have
both versions open at the same time)

* Run the atlas and see if it works.

[Qgis-user] Inquiry Regarding Hardware Requirements for QGIS

2024-03-07 Per discussione aday8300 via QGIS-User
Dear Subscribers,

I am interested in obtaining information regarding the minimum and
recommended hardware requirements for the QGIS software, used for spatial

What are the minimum and recommended hardware requirements for QGIS?

What technology does the QGIS program utilize for display and computation?
Is a single-core CPU, multiple cores, or a different setup used?

Is a graphics card used for display and computation? If so, what are the
minimum and recommended requirements?

What type of graphics card is required/recommended: OpenGL (Open Graphics

Re: [Qgis-user] can't apply mask on labels

2024-03-07 Per discussione Andreas Neumann via QGIS-User
 Hi all,

The mask is more flexible and cartographically more pleasing if you don't
have a homogenous single-color background on your map. The mask is the only
way to get rid of darker colors while keeping light background colors.

See f.e. this example here:

https://s.geo.admin.ch/bb5itd6k85y7

Have a look at the large labels "Pfaffhausen", "Benglen", "Schwerzenbach"
and "Fällanden". Darker colors from roads (black) and rivers (blue) are
masked, but lighter colors from forests, lakes and hillshading are
preserved. The mask is the only way to achieve this "selective" effect of
masking.

All other options like background rectangles or buffers have a fixed color
and only work on a homogeneous background. They wouldn't be able to achieve
the effect of the example above.

I hope this clarifies the difference in the approaches?

The only major problems with the masks are the following limitations
(hopefully they can be removed in the future):
- they cannot be used within the same layer (you need to duplicate layers
if you want to mask features with labels from the same layer)
- they don't yet work on vector tiles, because vector tiles aren't real
QGIS vector layers with all the symbology options. They only have a limited
set of symbology so far

Andreas

This means that if you have more than one connection to the same file
(e.g. perhaps two layers coming from the same file, or have it open in
QGIS and another program at the same time), there is a risk of the file
being corrupted upon write.

It sounds like this data format might be one to avoid for datasets you
want to modify with QGIS.

As I wrote in the initial email, there are many variables at play and I

Hi,
As Gordon pointed out earlier, this looks to me like an annotation display.
Please read

I'm sure there's a way around the problem. It seems quite unusual.

How did you add the polygon initially? That might shed some light on
why it's there and how to remove it.

You don't have any print layouts or anything active?

If you don't have any luck, and the project is not confidential, it
could be useful to share it so we can try it for ourselves. You can
save a copy of the project for this, and then delete all the layers
from the copy so the only thing in the project is the polygon. You may
even find as you do this the polygon disappears when you delete a
certain layer which might give some hints about where it's coming from.

Cheers,
Adam.

Is it possible you drew the polygon as an Annotation object instead of an
object in your vector layer? Easy enough to do, and they don’t appear in the
layers menu.

Hi Adam,

Thanks for replying. Yes I can zoom in and out of the polygon. I also closed
the Project several times and nothing happens.

If it is a QGIS bug, it means I better redo the Project? Or is ther a
alternative solution?

Thanks,

Can you zoom in on the polygon or is it fixed? If you can zoom in then
it looks like a QGIS bug, but if the polygon is fixed and you cannot
zoom in on it then it looks like a bug in your graphics card drivers.

Have you tried to close and re-open the project to see if that gets rid
of it?

Is there a simple pathway to do this ?
Or is it a process / script to create such an xml style collection files

Re: [Qgis-user] Atlas printing to PDF

2024-03-06 Per discussione Emma Hain via QGIS-User
Hi Spring
I am sorry you are experiencing this. I would strongly advise you to move
up to the latest LTR of QGIS 3.36 when you can.

It sounds like there are some buggy things happening in the background, so
maybe you need a clean version.

If this was me, I would follow this workflow.

   - Open up in the original version and create a .qpt from the print layout
   - Create a new product in the latest LTR
   - Locate the old project in the Browser window
   - Expand that project and drag the files into the new product.
   - In the print layout:
  - load the qpt
  - Copy over the Atlas parameters from your old product (you can have
  both versions open at the same time)
  - Run the atlas and see if it works.

Good luck!
Cheers
Em

[Qgis-user] Problem: Can't open Spatialite tables in QGIS on Windows

2024-03-05 Per discussione Brent Wood via QGIS-User
Hi,

We have been using QGIS & Spatialite for years and have recently encountered a
problem in QGIS under Windows.

We connect to a spatialite database fine, we can list the tables, but when we
try to open them we get an error:
db <...> table <...> is an invalid layer - not loaded (this is also written to
the log)

I can open the db in DBManager and enter the query "select * from t_transect;"
which runs & shows the data in the output pane.
When I try to load the layer as a map layer I get an error message referring me
to the error log, but the log is empty.

This is using QGIS 3.34.1 on Windows.

The same database file works perfectly on Linux, with QGIS v3.34.3. A colleague
has tried this & v3.36 on Windows with the same problem. The databases are
generated with echo sounder data by the ESP3 application, and we have been able
to use these in QGIS for years without problems until now.

Spatialite access the tables fine, the basic metadata is present:
select * from geometry_columns;
t_transect|geom_col|1|2|4326|0
t_echoint_transect_1d|geom_col|1|2|4326|0

The QGIS error message is not particularly helpful in determining the problem.
Our workaround is to run the SQL we would have run in the QGIS database manager
directly from the spatialite command line, exported to CSV & then open the CSV
in QGIS, which works, but is not ideal.

For some context about these data: The figure shows each "ping" from the echo

[Qgis-user] QGIS and FileGDB

2024-03-05 Per discussione Totò Fiandaca via QGIS-User
I use OSGeo4W on win 11 64 bit and got the problem in QGIS 3.28 and 3.34

For work I use both QGIS and ArcGIS PRO 3.2.2, I noticed that by modifying
the FileGDBs created by ArcGIS PRO in QGIS:
1. saving is particularly slow;
2. I often lose data, i.e. if I have an active data selection and I try to
update only the selection, QGIS updates the entire dataset resulting in
data loss.

I have already noticed the malfunctioning of FileGDB in QGIS for some time,
but I want to leave this trace, unfortunately it is not easy to reproduce.

Greetings

Re: [Qgis-user] Atlas printing to PDF

2024-03-02 Per discussione Springfield Harrison via QGIS-User

Hi Nigel,

Okay, note that.

However, I cannot get QGIS 3.32.3 to load copies of a couple of my
projects.  It seemed to hang up while dealing with certain files which I
then went back to the original 3.16.4 and removed.  Then it would hang
up on a different file.

In a new project, 3.32.3 will load those files but not from the original
project.  Is 3.32.3 known to have problems?  It seemed to install all
right from the Windows .MSI installer.

Update: the program will actually load those files, it just takes up 10
min. to do so.  And then there are huge delays during the work session.
The files loaded individually into a new project with no problem.

Once I finally got it working, I was able to try printing the Atlas.  No
change, it just prints one blank page.  No error messages, just a fail.

Not sure what the answer is, I don't have the time to keep trying new
versions when they are mostly a disappointment.

Nevertheless, thanks very much for your thoughts…

Cheers, Spring

So far I only know of the opposite option creating and importing /exporting
xml style collections for icons you already have in QGIS.

Is there a simple pathway to do this ?
Or is it a process / script to create such an xml style collection files

Re: [Qgis-user] How QGIS handles on-the-fly projection?

2024-02-29 Per discussione Ujaval Gandhi via QGIS-User
There is specific code for QGIS to handle transformation between EPSG:3857 and
EPSG:4326 due to EPSG:3857 not being valid at poles. See the comments at
https://github.com/qgis/QGIS/blob/master/src/core/proj/
qgscoordinatetransform.cpp#L585
[https://mailtrack.io/l/3b9f0f5d1696eca585d974232660d3c67b88aeef?url=https%3A%2F%2Fgithub.com%2Fqgis%2FQGIS%2Fblob%2Fmaster%2Fsrc%2Fcore%2Fproj%2Fqgscoordinatetransform.cpp%23L585=8747767=160430bc5e3e39b2]

You should not be using EPSG:3857 for datasets that span more than +/-85 degrees
latitude. If you want to display global datasets in a projected CRS, try Equal
Earth (EPSG:8857).

Re: [Qgis-user] Cannot open up projects in 3.36.0

Strange, after waiting about 10 minutes, now my Projects opened up fine, both
the ones where I saved in 3.24.1 in the new 3.36.0 format and those created in
3.36.0 from the get-go.
Maybe it takes a couple of open/closes after you install 3.36.0 to work well?
I did notice the blue status bar at the bottom and have waited until it went
away. Maybe my mistake was trying to open files while that blue status bar was
just running?

For full disclosure, I have both 3.24.1 and 3.36.0 installed, but they’re
installed in their own directors. I wouldn’t think they could conflict with one
another.

Kind of weird.

This is similar to a problem that I have after trying to build QGIS. I checked

The only possible problem is that my version of numpy is not in the range of
what is wanted.

2024-02-29 Per discussione Christian Castro via QGIS-User
Hello,

I installed QGIS 3.36.0 and I have some strange behavior.

I see my projects in the middle window named "Recent Projects", and I see a
screenshot of the project, but when I double-click on it to open it, nothing
happens.
This was a project that started off at 3.24.1 and opened in 3.36.0 and saved in
3.36.0, but when I close QGIS 3.36.0 and double-click on my project file from
windows, nothing happens.
The new QGIS 3.3.6.0 program does open, and I see the project preview in the
middle pane named "Recent Projects". But, when I double-click on the name of
the project, nothing happens, I don't see the window showing me the project
stuff.
This is unlike the 3.24.1 version where when I double-clicked on a project
file, it would show me the project stuff.

This is happening in both brand new projects created in 3.36.0 and old projects
created in version 3.24.1 and saved in 3.36.0 (to convert it to the 3.3.6.0
format).

Maybe there's some kind of View pane that needs to be enabled under the View
menu?
If so can someone please let me know.
The Pan Map option under the View menu is enabled and Show Map Tips under the
View menu is also enabled.

Thanks,

Christian
