Re: sharing a LaserWriter 360 on ethernetwork

2003-02-19 Thread James Rice
I have a LaserWriter 360 on PhoneNet tied to the ethernet hub/switch
stack with an AsanteTalk bridge. I've also used AsantePrint devices
before. Have you tried bringing up the LaserWriter and Q950 and then
cycling the power on the Ethermac adapter? Asante devices have to be
rebooted with all LocalTalk devices up before they register with the
bridge. No experience with the Farallon version so YMMV. Seems worth a
try.

Re: LC 475 or monitor dead

2002-09-07 Thread James Rice

Fry's had the pram batteries for $5.99, Fry sku 2818094. Our local
Radio Shack (DFW) are charging $10.99 for the same battery. I also
needed three PRAM batteries for my NeXT slab and cubes. RS wanted
$11.99 and two week delivery as a special order RSU item, Fry's had them
in stock for $4.59. If you can stand an hour wait for check approval.
I work for a VAR and we spend around $35-55k every nine months at Fry's
and it still takes 20 minutes (on a good day) to get check approval. If
the prices and selection weren't so good, I'd avoid that place.

Re: NeXTlist?

2002-07-28 Thread James Rice

There are a couple. I've been signed up on a NeXT Dimension owners
list for almost 2 years and never had a post. Even the archive is
empty. Most of the NeXT activity is on a forum at
http://next.z80.org but it's fairly low traffic and on the cctalk/ccteck
lists over at classiccmp.org.
If you start a NeXT list I'm first in line!

Re: NeXT ColorStation and Apple Multisync 17". Possible?

2002-07-28 Thread James Rice

You can connect a Mac monitor to a NeXT Color slab . Use one of the
multisync models as the NeXT is a fixed frequency video mode 1120x832,
75dpi @ 68hz and is a little different from the Mac mode. You may have
to open the monitor and adjust the vertical and horizontal size to
properly fill the screen. I'm not positive of this, but I had to
readjust the NeXT monitor after it had been tweaked for use with the
Mac, so the converse may be true. YMMV. The slab puts out the +-12v to
the soundbox to power the keyboard, mouse and interface circuit board in
the soundbox, but the voltage isn't passed thru to the color monitor. I
verified this with a voltmeter on my own Turbo Color slab with N4006
monitor and ADB soundbox. All you need to connect is the three coaxial
leads. Beware that the monitor need to be able to handle sync-on-green.
I'm not sure what the Mac monitor expects. You can hack up a
sync-on-green to seperate sync adapter, do a search on
comp.sys.next.hardware for details.

BTW, there are two versions of the NeXT 21" color monitor. One is a BNC
commection and needs a NeXT BNC to 13w3 cable adapter, one is straight
13w3. I have an example of both. The monitor that I have that was used
with the Mac was the BNC version, but the Mac cable that came with the
monitor was a DB-15 to 13w3 cable. so the NeXT 13w3 N206.300 adapter
was used. This adapter only has the coaxial leads connected to the
monitor. All other pins are dead ended in the adapter.

Re: OS musings on too many macs.

2002-07-27 Thread James Rice

I work tech support almost 10 hours a day, explaining to clueless
lusers why they are at risk when they connect their network directly to
the DSL modem with no firewall, or why the PC has to be on and booted
for me to step them through some basic trouble shooting, or why I can't
step the through a network setup and install over the phone for "free"
when it takes me or one of our techs around 4-6 hours to do it onsite
just because the stuipd idiot doctor (we install medical billing
systems) decided to save a few dollars and cut the install out of the
contract.

So, I do not offer "free" support and repairs to family and friends.
Benn there, done that, several times too many.

BTW, dana, nice site!

This my disease also, but I'm a worse case than you: Not only does my
clooecting extend to Macs, but also Suns, Sgis, NeXTs, BeBoxes, PeeCees,
etc. My collection now encompasses 3 NeXT's, 12-13 Macs, 3 Daystars, 4
Suns, 1 Sgi, a BeBox, 2 Canon object.stations, 4 Tandys, 1 Commodore and
almost 75 modern PeeCees ( from Pentium 133's to Athelon MP 2000's).
There are 18 laser printers, 12 inkjets, 14 dot matrix printers, 3 pen
plotters (D&E size, not small ones!), 6 digitizer tablets, ton's of SCSI
boxes, almost 4000 CD-ROMs and uncountable floppys and tapes in almost
16 formats.

I wonder if there is a 12 step program for pathetic souls like us.

Re: NeXT ColorStation and Apple Multisync 17". Possible?

2002-07-27 Thread James Rice

Yes it's possible. I have a NeXT N4005 21" color monitor by Hitachi
that was being used on a Q800 with a D15 to 3 BNC cable. You also might
look for a 13w3 SGI monitor. There seems to a lot of them floating
around, at least in USA, and they work with the original NeXT Y cable
from the slab to the sound box. Check out comp.sys.next.hardware on
Google. A lot of NeXT folk still hang out there. And of course if you
have any questions feel feel to contact me off-list.

I have a Turbo Color slab and two Dimension cubes, so black hardware is
one of mt pet projects.
