I haven't upgraded or patched the firmware recently, but I don't doubt
the battery is at its end of life. The strange thing is that it appears
to still charge sometimes and can play for a couple hours when it does.
It's like the Radio is getting false readings from the sensors.

Just ran an quick test. The Radio has been plugged in to the wall for
days, I don't think I've played it all recently. First, I checked the
power info:

Wall voltage: 17.7V
Charger state: Battery not charging
Battery temperature: 29.5C
Battery voltage: 13.4V
Battery vmon1: 3.9V
Battery vmon2: 7.7V

Then I unplugged it. It didn't instantly shut off, but after a few
seconds displayed the 'Battery low' screen and wouldn't do anything. So
I plugged it back into the wall and it showed the small charging
indicator. I checked the power info again:

Wall voltage: 17.2V
Charger state: Battery charging
Battery temperature: 29.8C
Battery voltage: 15.9V
Battery vmon1: 9.5V
Battery vmon2: 9V

I just turned on my Squeezebox tonight and had the same issue. Did a
search on the forum for the problem and found your post JJZolx. My
thought is that the battery has probably at the end of it's life. It's
seldom used these days on battery power. Decided I would start using it
again as a portable and it did just as you described JJZolx. Another
oddity is that it happened after I had upgraded it to the latest
firmware version.

It wouldn't power back up if it was a faulty connection with the power
supply plug. I'll open it up and see if maybe there are any bad looking
connections with the battery pack.

Does the radio always show a charging indicator when plugged in? What I
suspect is happening is that it's fully charging when plugged in, then
it cuts off the charger when it determines battery full, then the
charger never comes back on as it slowly drains from powering the clock
display.

Michael suggests. I have had this happen to me where the battery was
constantly discharging (slowly) while supposedly on charge. Now I check
for the charging beep when I plug in the charger.

If the Radio has been plugged in for many hours or days, and I then
unplug it, it instantly turns off, or occasionally displays a low
battery warning and shuts off a few seconds later. If I then plug it in
(usually because I'm playing it) and leave it plugged in for a couple
hours, the battery charges and is able to play on battery for several
hours.

Are you sure it's charging all the time? I've seen flaky behaviour with
a connector coming loose, or a broken charger cable which needed
specific positioning before it would actually charge...

I suspect the battery is on its last legs, but I also suspect the
Radio's firmware is broken.

Here's the behavior I'm seeing, pretty much every time now:

If the Radio has been plugged in for many hours or days, and I then
unplug it, it instantly turns off, or occasionally displays a low
battery warning and shuts off a few seconds later. If I then plug it in
(usually because I'm playing it) and leave it plugged in for a couple
hours, the battery charges and is able to play on battery for several
hours.

I've also never seen that. Switching between plugged in and playing on
battery with one of my Radios quite often.

You can check the battery voltage at
Settings/advanced/diagnostics/power.

[SlimDevices: Radio] Battery/charging behavior. Anyone else experiencing this?

2020-05-09 Thread JJZolx

This has always been like this, but I was reminded of it again today. I
had my Radio, with battery, plugged in and playing for a couple of
hours. Then I unplugged it to move it another room to play on battery.
In less than a minute I got a low battery screen and it wouldn't play.
So I plugged it back into the power and let it charge for 10 or 15
minutes, tried again and it played for several hours on battery.

Not quite sure what's going on there. I don't think it actually charged
in that time, and unless the firmware is really screwed up, the battery
shouldn't have been drained because it was playing while plugged in.
