2010-06-13 Thread andrew hill
thanks guys - good suggestion.

i'm using Mavic rims with 36h XT hubs front and rear, with 40mm Schwalbe Mara
Supremems.
a lighter 32h wheelest/tires for event rides is an extremely good idea. and
then i'd have one for a road-ey bike if i wanted to go more dedicated :)

It's nice you can nickname your bike Louise.

I tried to call my bike "Suzie" for a while but knowing it was already
a Sam Hillborne put a squash on that idea. Then I thought Sam really
meant Samantha but that was way to many syllables: sa-man-tha-hill-
borne. So I gave up and now I just call it "bicycle". :)

Great yellow color.

[RBW] Re: what would make the best..

2010-06-13 Thread XO-1.org Rough Riders
I would recommend some lighter, and more importantly, far more aero
wheels. In this day and age, such wheels, with, for example, 24 spokes
front and rear, are totally bomber if you buy from a reputable brand.
I have ridden piles of miles on such wheels in the dirt, without a
hitch. Cyclocross racers and lots of other heavy users rides wheels
like these all the time. (For that matter, I was riding 24 spokes,
front and rear, way back in 1985 and raced RAAM in 1987 with 20 spokes
front and 24 spokes rear. I have never broken a spoke in any of these
wheels and get out a spoke wrench maybe once a year. I weigh 172 and
am six foot.) The wheels made today have really optimized the weigh /
aeroness factor the max. Truly, except for maybe 100-milers on dirt,
or people who weight 250+ pounds, or fully loaded touring, the case
for 32 spoke wheels doesn't exist anymore. Here's a good example of
what I'd suggest, and they're only $300:

http://www.ritcheylogic.com/dyn_prodfamily.php?k=355378

You can see something similar on my Roadeo here:

http://www.xo-1.org/2010/03/rough-riding-in-snow-mount-laguna.html

You put those 24 spoke Ritchey wheels on your Sam Hillborne with some
high-performance tyres and you are going to be shocked at the
difference, in a very good way. Of course, I still believe in keeping
wheels like these just for special occasions, events, epics, etc. I
say that not because the wheels can't handle year-round use - they can
- but because you'll appreciate them more if you don't use them all
the time. (It's kind of like baseball batters swinging with two bats
while warming up.) Train / ride / commute on heavy-duty 32 hole
wheels, then use these special wheels when it's appropriate. (It bugs
the crap out of me that modern road bikes are sold with full-blown
"racing wheels" as the OEM wheel.)

Seems to me that the Sam would be just fine for both, unless you have
a heavy rack/heavy tires on it.

I wanted a fast-ish, stripped-down skinny tire bike and found an old
Trek on Craiglist for $120. Lots of great deals out there for nice
old steel bikes.

2010-06-13 Thread JoelMatthews
If you like your Sam, you may be able to get the extra boost you want
for cheap with an event wheel set. You do not say what you are using
currently, but if it is optimal for commuting, it is a probably
heavier with wider tires.

Get your favorite hubsets in 32h configuration, match them to a set of
Velocity Aerohead rims, and finish it off with a good lightweight tire
such as the Schwalbe Durano or Marathon Racer if you ride somewhere
flats are a problem or the real light Ultermos if your roads are good.

Hang this set in your storage area for all but events and the
occasional training ride.

Going this route will save you money, allow you to ride your favorite
bike on long events where comfort and familiarity are important, yet
still make a real difference.

Or you can buy and build up a Roadeo ;)

2010-06-13 Thread andrew hill
hi folks,

i loved riding my first century recently, on a Sam Hillborne, but it was a
pretty slow (though mostly comfortable) push. so the way i have it set up it's
excellent for city commuting and loaded touring / randonneuring, but still
think i want a gofast for club/training rides, built up with lighter
wheels/rubber, etc.

the thing is - the expanded geometry of the Sam fits my build (and that of a
few other odd ducks who have recently posted) at 5'11 with an 84.5 pbh,
rounding up.

so - of the current frames new or in circulation, what lightish, expandedish
frame should i be looking for for? should i simply try another Sam? maybe a
size down with a longer stem? :)

just musing - but i figured y'all would have some opinions.

Selling my used 61cm Atlantis, here is the parts list:

-Chris king headset
-shimano dura ace seat post
-Sugino xd cranks
-nitto technomic deluxe stem
-nitto noodle bars
-shimano 9 speed bar end shifters
-shimano cantilever brakes
-cane creek brake levers
-schwalbe maraton tires
-campy mirage front dérailleur
-tiagra rear dérailleur
-skf fenders
-shimano Rsx wheels

Everything works fine on the bike, the paint has some chips but no
dents or dings. The standover is about 86cm but the tires are huge.
Great deal on this bike. the fenders are not installed but i put them
on for the pics, i dont have the hardware. Buyer pays professional
packing fees plus shipping (packing should run about $45). Here are

[RBW] Update: For Sale, various

2010-06-13 Thread PATRICK MOORE
The Bagman, MKS pedals and (tentatively) the Spaninga fender mount tail
light are spoken for.

Prices include shipping, CONUS only.

Photos at http://picasaweb.google.com/BERTIN753/ForSale#

Rack mount dyno light with standlight and reflectors; unmounted but I tossed
the package. Note the little holes for the wires; not for spade type
terminals. Also note the 80 mm mounting posts. $20 shipped.

Not pictured: Spaninga 4D Top Light, the one you've heard me go on and on
about, $15 shipped and I'll refund everything if you can't get it to work to
your satisfaction. Me, I'm going back to battery tail lights. Or trade for
battery powered tail light.

Avenir seat pouch, $12 shipped.

Jandd mini seat wedge, big enough for two skinny tubes and not much else,
$10 shipped.

Jandd tubular tire bag, mounted but never used, $25 shipped.

Wellgo track pedals, a few hundred miles, $20 shipped.

Look KEOs, red, no cleats, about 200 miles, $40 shipped.

Re: [RBW] Noisy Bagman support for Carradice bag

2010-06-13 Thread PATRICK MOORE
I've used several Bagmen and have not had this problem; I did have the
problem of the support slipping out on the move, which I fixed by notching
the ends of the support where they met the set screws, then loctiting the
set screws in place.

Re: [RBW] FS Romulus $1150

2010-06-13 Thread JimD

Like Dave, a Romulus was my first Riv.

I like/liked it enough that when I ordered a custom Riv I asked that
the custom emulate the Romulus but be able to take Jack Brown
33.3 tires with fenders.

I expected the custom to be a fancier Romulus. I was amazed to find
that it is even a nicer riding bike.

The Romulus has moved on to pal Brian and most days he rides it
instead of his Trek Madone.

Selling my 61cm Romulus, just too many bikes. It's a stock build with
105 hubs, cassette, derailleurs and headset, nitto technomic stem,
noodle bars and crystal fellow, shimano levers and brakes and sugino
triple. The standover is 85 with skinny tires. It's not been ridden
that much probably under 1000 miles. Has one small ding on the chain
stay, I will have pics up in a minute. The paint has a little wear but
overall still looks nice. I would rather have somebody come and get it
in person, so if you are in the bay area and come and get it it's
$1100.

[RBW] Re: New-to-me Quickbeam

2010-06-13 Thread Lee
Thanks, Ryan! I've been battling the VO Model 6 saddle for a year and
a half now. I've tried it out on other bikes, and now the Quickbeam.
The saddle is modeled after the Brooks Swallow, so a more aggressive
bar-to-saddle drop ought to help. Initially, I had it set up on a bike
where the bars were level to the saddle. This "upright" position
didn't work out that great, as I could never get my sit bone placement
quite right. Then, the leather began to sag a bit and one end of the
cantle created a noticeable bump on the saddle top. I say noticeable b/
c I was riding in to work (42 miles one-way) and by the time I got in
I had a nice memento of the trip on my behind that stayed with me for
a while. I guess that's the hammock aspect that you saw in the pic. I
decided to re-tension the bolt and it did remove some of the sag. I'm
still keeping a wary eye out for that bump to reappear.

In any event, in this use, where I'm a little more crouched, I
initially found that the saddle felt like a paddle, with a small flat
roundish surface underneath your sit bones, and defined edges that I
could feel on the back of my thighs. That annoyed me, but I thought
that this might be a break-in process. I've only ridden it this way
for a week, but I can see how the edges beneath my thighs may break
down some and create a smoother, sloped surface--much like the nice
shape that the Swallow has from the get-go. If it doesn't work out,
I'll probably offer it up on the list with all caveats included and
get myself a Swift.

Sorry for the long answer. But I'm drinking coffee and waiting for the
laundry to finish :)

Best,
Lee

[RBW] Re: Noisy Bagman support for Carradice bag

2010-06-13 Thread Mike
Funny you mention this. While I haven't experienced any creaking I did
notice I have play with my bagman where the supports enter the piece
that attaches to the saddle. I did try and tighten these up but they
appear to be tightened up already. I do think Dave C. offers good
advice for dealing with your noise. I may disassemble mine later this
week just to see if the play can be eliminated.

No fireplace, for that matter-we are renters and the closest we've
come to a fireplace is our current house here in Portland, OR-which
has a wood burning stove in the living room that doesn't work!, but...

earlier today I was getting ready to dismantle my bike, couldn't, rode
it one last time, and then met my girls for caffe.

My wife, Amy, then told me she had a plan, "We will pack it away, but
when we get moved and someday settle down for good... the frameset
gets hung on the wall, or over a fireplace."

Ironic...
So, you and her must be thinking alike.
