it is a great bag and has plenty of life left in it. It just isn’t one I
use. I am happy to have it go to someone who will use it. Wally was first

[RBW] Re: Hillibikes are so close!

2022-05-03 Thread Valerie Yates
Just to add to your excitement, I have a Gus demo purchased complete from
Riv from the first round and I love it. In my garage, it looks so huge and
stout that it can lead me to doubt its role in my life. But then I ride it
and it is such a fun bike to ride. It is surprisingly comfortable and
pleasant going uphill and truly fantastic -stable, intuitive, flowy - going
downhill, paved or not. There is one steep downhill where my other bikes
leave me feeling somewhat apprehensive about going too fast but I can sail
down it confidently on the Gus. It has expanded my comfort zone. I find
myself thinking up routes to do with it.

Is anyone planning to tour with theirs? I wonder which racks would fit well
on it.

Hey, if it’ll fit I have a 700x33, and a 700x37, set of schwalbe marathon

Also a pair of black platform pedals.

Re: [RBW] Re: Atlantis one year review - the consummate All-Rounder

2022-05-03 Thread Christian B-H
Hi, Clark!

I was inspired by your Atlantis reflections but between not having approval
yet for the purchase and despite how absolutely BEAUTIFUL that 59 rainbow
top tubed steel steed is, I decided to heed your size warning. I am 6' with
a 89 PBH same as you, and frequently ride slightly more technical terrain
than perhaps my bikes should which makes the idea of jumping onto the top
tube suddenly or having to swing my leg over my loaded bike too high sound
painful...

Whatever I buy will be my first Rivendell also, just like your 59 Atlantis,
and I'm trying to figure out what to look for.

Usually I'm on my 2021 56cm Kona Rove LTD which I like better than my other
two bikes: a 2001 Merlin road bike (56ish cm) with 25mm tires, or my new
fully rigid Surly Karate Monkey, size L with 2.6" tires (I think I should
have gotten a jones, and KNOW i should have gotten the Gus back in
December...)

A 55 *Atlantis *or a 57 *Appaloosa *intrigue me. I love the Mermaid color
almost as much as the Russian Submarine Atlantis color. I gather, perhaps
incorrectly, that a 57 Appaloosa would be slightly smaller but functionally
similar to the Atlantis.

The *Gus *is next up because that was my original idea in December, and it
would be a good grocery hauling around towner in addition to
NON-downhill/enduro mountain bike.
2
*Platypus *because it seems like a mixte gravel-ish bike. I assume a steel
rivendell with 700x50mm tires could handle "gravel" and single-track much
better than my carbon-forked, drop-bar Kona Rove with 700x4 AND it could
get groceries better.

The Platy (town and gravel) Gus (town and mountain) and Appaloosa
(road-tour-gravel-town) all speak to me in different but similar ways,
ESPECIALLY if I could find any of those in *Mermaid*.

So, two months inHow have you been enjoying the Platypus? Any regret
about selling the Atlantis? Any wisdom about which direction maybe I should
go? Hoping some other's will jump in here also...

Best,

Christian in Boulder CO

I think many people who have spent many years trying different bikes
and trying innumerable setups sort all get to this same place. A
specialised bike will just get ridden less and you tend to get on the 'All

types of riding appeals to our toolbox fallacy brains but not to our on
 the
bike actually riding brains. The bike that is good for 90% of the riding
you do is the bike you ride 90% of the time.

Thankyou for articulating these musings. Glad you are happy with your
 Atlantis.

2022-05-03 Thread Jared Wilson
Ray,

Sounds like my posting wasn't clear, apologies for that.

I have a Nitto R14 (w/ tombstone) in my possession and I'm looking to
trade for someones Rivendell Shiny Rack.

Thanks for reaching out and hopefully someone else finds that information
helpful!

Best,

Jared

Re: [RBW] Introducing the Charlie H Gallop Protovelo

2022-05-03 Thread Jason Fuller
Hey thanks for the kind words to those who offered them!

Abe, maybe some of those old school "brake booster" brackets would do the
trick! It could be the relatively long and thin seat stays that are
twisting more than the housing compression that I initially blamed?

Max, I found that angling the bars down further than I initially thought
was 'correct' did the trick for wrist angle for me, maybe it would for you
also if you haven't tried this already

Re: [RBW] Club Rides On A Racing Platypus

2022-05-03 Thread George Schick
This recent club ride with the faster group got me thinking. If those
riders are smart, they'll put Leah at the head of the pace line most of the
time. With her sitting in a bolt upright position on that Platypus she'd
make an excellent wind break for those following. And from the sound of
they way she rides she wouldn't slow down their objective speed, either.

one if that was the only way
 B. 10:1 odds Maybe 30 years from now Specialized has patented
"bicycle" and monopolizes the entire industry. She'd buy one if that was

 C. 1,000,000:1 odds Even if every bike in the world is a black carbon
specialized, on her first ride she'd go buy a rattle can and get some
 color
 on that thing!

[RBW] [iBob cross-post] WTB: various (cheap!) parts for a friend's commuter build

2022-05-03 Thread Patch T
Hey Bunch,

A friend's bike was stolen recently and I'm building up a new commuter for
her. I've acquired a lightweight vintage Italian step-through in a nicely
large size for a decent price. The budget isn't terrible, but we are trying
to be thrifty (in case it's stolen again, goddess forbid) - so I'm asking
for your well-used but functioning parts kicking around in that bin that
you've been meaning to sell off or donate.

   - 700c wheelset - 126mm rear spacing; likely running 32mm tires;
aluminum rim brake rims - 5/6/7spd cassette like HG or freewheel both great
   - silver quill stem with 25.4 clamp, about 80-90mm extension - no need
   for lots of height
   - silver sidepull or centerpull brakes, mid-reach
   - 110 or 130 bcd crankarms
   - silver platform pedals
   - front rack with axle-fixed struts, like a VO Constructeur, or similar.
Silver would be nice; OR a Wald 137 with its struts
   - rear 6/7/8 speed short or mid-cage derailer, silver
   - bar-end (right-side only) or stem-mounted shifter set-up

I think that's all, at least for now. We appreciate your help and unwanted
bits!

thanks,
Patch
Brooklyn, NY

[RBW] Re: WTB/ISO: Carradice or other Saddle Bag

2022-05-03 Thread Valerie Yates
I have a used Baggins bag, complete with original cardboard base and stick,
that I would be happy to pass along to an enthusiast for $40. It might be
too big for a kid’s bike.

It looks like this
one: https://www.sheldonbrown.com/interbike02/pages/riv-baggins-bag.html
More info: https://www.roadbikerider.com/baggins-adam-saddlebag-d1/

I am not sure if either of those are the exact same model as mine but
should be enough to give you the idea. I can take /share pictures of mine
later today if it interests you. Let me know if you’d like to know more.

Best,

Re: [RBW] Introducing the Charlie H Gallop Protovelo

2022-05-03 Thread maxcr
Thanks for the post Jason, loved reading about your experience!

I'm another lucky owner of a demo Gallop (61.5cm) with canti studs. I'm
impatiently waiting for it to get delivered, it's taken forever to ship,
but it's supposed to get here later this week - I'm sure the wait will be
worth it and I hope to turn it into my main commuter and around town bike.

My pbh is 90.5 (ish) but I'm 5'11" with long legs & shorter torso - I'm
very curious to see if the ETT will work for me with drop bars of I will
need to switch over to swept back bars... I have an albatross cockpit ready
to go for it just in case but I've never loved the wrist angle it puts me
on. This will be my first bike with a swoop tube and I'm very excited about
going in that direction but I'm not sure about fit.

Also wondering about the brakes, mine comes with CX50 but I have a set of
Paul Motolites and some Cane Creek drop bar levers for V-Brakes that I
could use if I decide to stick with the drop bars... the alternative would
be to take the Paul cantis from the Atlantis and move them over to the
incoming Gallop (leaving the Motolites for the Atlantis which I plan to
turn into more of a hilly bike) - first world problems for sure.

I'd love to hear your thoughts on which brakes/levers would you pair with
which bike if it were you?

Max

Re: [RBW] Club Rides On A Racing Platypus

2022-05-03 Thread lconley
Good for you Leah!

I have completed the two day 165 mile Cross Florida and the Valley Ride of
Six-Gap on my Bombadil - which has a diagatube and tentacles, so not the
lightest bike (or rider) at the events. I rode the Cross Florida with
Bullmoose bars and the Valley Ride with Noodle drops. Rode in sneakers on
platform pedals. Received lots of suggestions from people who are
considerably younger than some of my bikes. Mostly I just nodded. I rode
with a friend who rode a Bike Friday folding bike. The phrase "run what you
brung" comes to mind.

When I was younger and the Cross Florida was a 170 mile single day only
event, riding on my Masi road (racing) bike, there was a guy who rode it on
a single speed beach cruiser, in flip-flops - had a case of Mellow Yellow
and a case of beer bungeed to a rear rack at the start. When he finished
(in one day), the rack was empty.

It is the mind and the legs that count the most, the bike mostly just needs
to be reliable.

Leah:   Good ride! A senior lady in our club can hang at 18 on flat roads on
her Clem L. She has made believers of many. Hills slow her down some, but she

Re: [RBW] Re: A Quiet Ride and Thoughts of Bicycle Commuting

2022-05-03 Thread ascpgh
I love all the small things that collectively make up cycling and when
"improvements" remove those from necessity it reduces my experience. Some
see cycling from the perspective and definition of performance and make
judgements based on what moves their experience on that spectrum to their
satisfaction. People are the same with the vehicles they purchase, some
want performance as their foremost objective while others may greater
utility over speed and handling.

I guess it is my agency that leads me to prefer being more involved in the
act of cycling. I went through Ergopower and STI phases, I am about
finished with mechanical discs. I saw a YouTube about servicing them after
a wet ride that included replacing the pads, cleaning the caliper, applying
a grease to prevent pads from binding when retracting from the disc...after
a ride in the wet. I ditched a brand of car after the warranty because it
was fiddly and expensive to keep. The previous one had been stalwart but
helpless in bad weather, the latter seemed made of delicate pieces carved
by Lorelei herself, consumed by mundane use far beneath its potential.
Settling up after services felt like real estate closings.

I appreciate sufficiency, not being a bother to anyone, while I do what I
do. Last night I was flagged down by a cyclist with his bike upside down on
the sidewalk. As I neared, he asked if I had a pump, which I have snapped
into its included frame clip that is zip-tied to my Caradice Nelson
Longflap's cross dowel inside the bag. I've posted a picture of this
before. His pump's cup didn't seal to move air yet alone create pressure in
this first need of it's function. My simple Topeak mini road did, even
though I hadn't used it in over a year. It's just part of my kit of things
that assure I will suffice and was happy to offer it's aid. He was
satisfied and thankful.

Last week I rode the GAP to Cumberland, MD. Thursday the forecast of
scattered drizzle and 60s realized as rain in the high 40s. My traditional
mid morning stop for coffee in the past had burned and was boarded up. My
lunch preference was under limited hours still and not yet open for the
day. My best tools were three layers of wool, my old wool Army glove liners
and a space blanket I wrapped with under cover when my layers were wet to
the skin. My body heat dried the wool and kept the wind off me. If I
distrusted the forecast I would have worn my Hiltrek Ventile anorak but I
was in a more breathable shell considering the entirety of my trip. The
day's ride took longer under these accommodations but that is part of what
I enjoy about outings like this.

In the morning after breakfast I rode into the fog discovering that the
rain I had been in was in the form of 7-9" of snow in the higher elevations
as I climbed out of the Casselman River valley. The path was soft from the
wetness it held and as I neared the high point I noticed a left side tick
when my foot neared bottom and I ran through the diagnostics in my mind:
pedal installation in the crank arm, chainring fastener(s), crank bolt
torque securing the right crank arm, bottom bracket (SKF unit) retaining
ring torque or a breaking joint in the bottom bracket area of the frame.
manipulating my pedal stroke I narrowed it to the BB and responded with by
optimizing my tired full circle pedaling and achieved quiet, hopefully
non-destructive ride into Cumberland. Once home and cleaned up I found a
combination of crank bolt torque and BB retaining ring torque
insufficiencies that satisfied my desire to mechanically understand and the
ability accurately assess and diagnose odd sounds or degradation of
functions.

Yeah, deemphasizing my agency in all the facets of cycling is not movement
toward a positive end from my perspective.
