I've finally landed on the Sam, and have been saving to get enough $ to do a complete build. I'm about half way there, and discovered on their website that it seems the 56cm only comes with a double top tube. I emailed a few days ago to ask if this is the case, but haven't heard back. So, here's what I'm wondering - is the 56cm Sam only with a double top tube now? If so, what would you suggest as some other options? I know lots of great routes where the attributes of Riv bikes would shine, both functionally and cosmetically. I'd be willing to put together a Riv Rally Midwest sometime this upcoming summer. Most likely it would be somewhere between Minneapolis and Madison and a 2-day weekend format with camping and hotel options. Also, most likely there would be ride route options to suit different fitness levels and adventurousness thresholds (nothing "extreme"). Re: [RBW] Re: Upgrading my Trek 520?
I have a Trek 520 that I used as a commuter and loaded tourer for many years. When I bought it in 1989 I had the LBS switch out the 105 cranks for MB cranks as it too thought it didn't have sufficiently low gears for touring. Over the years I made lots of upgrades and made it as close to a Rivendell ride as possible. The original Bontrager rims developed cracks at the spoke holes so I built Dyad wheels with a SON hub for generator lights. Can't say enough positive things about having headlight and tailights available at all times! Last summer I bought a Hunqapillar for these duties and modified the Trek to be a city bike, with flat bars and a single chainring. The Hunq is a vast improvement over the Trek. It has that "Rivendell" ride where the Trek was solid but kind of dead. Still keeping the Trek as it has a lot of sentimental value and was there before I drank the Rivendell Kool-aid. Re: [RBW] Questions: Wiring a tail light and more.
Brian, Have wired taillights 2 ways and both have worked fine. I have wired a dynamo taillight by running the single wire from the dynamo along the down tube, secured by zip ties. Went along top of the bottom bracket and drilled a small hole into SKS fenders. Then taped the wire inside the fender. Drilled another small hole just below the mounted taillight and pulled wire through for connection to the light. I did not get a good ground with the SKS fenders so ran a short ground wire from the taillight to a fender stay bolt. This worked without trouble for 2 years. On my new Hunqapillar I decided to run the single wire from the dyanamo across the top tube, down one of the seat stays and along a fender stay. The wire was secured by several zip ties along the way. This bike has VO aluminum fenders and I did not need to make a separate ground connection. Only had this a few weeks so will see how I like the external routing. While the dynamo lighting set-up is expensive I have really enjoyed having good lights available without having to fuss with batteries. Re: [RBW] Generator lighting questions
Beth, Below is my experience with your questions. a. I have my light mounted to a plastic SKS fender. Has been on there since Sept 09. This bike is ridden most days and is my touring bike. No issues to date. b. I routed mine inside the fender. Taped it up with black tape, Gorilla brand. Then drilled a small hole next to the light and ran the single wire out and connected it to the light. Since the fenders were plastic the ground circuit didn't work so I ran a short length of wire from the ground lead of the light to one of the fender stay bolts. c. Mine is mounted to the fork crown. Bike has linear brakes and low rider racks. The light clears both of the handlebar bags I use. The Velocity Dyad's do not have a machined side wall. Machined side walls are created by removing metal to smooth out the braking surface, which potentially weakens the rim(although manufacturers can start with a thicker piece of aluminum in anticipation that part of the surface will be shaved off). Grant has written about how he prefers non- machined side walls for strength. What I want to know is: do rims with non-machined side walls brake worth a damn? Or, is the brake pad skipping all over the brake surface and making a terrible racket? Has anyone used Velocity Dyad rims before? Re: [RBW] Re: 700x35c tires
Mikey, I used the Maxxis Overdrive tires on my Trek 520 for several years. This is my touring and sometimes commuter bike. It was always very rough and harsh over bumps, nothing like my Rambouillet so I just wrote it off to the heavy and stiff frame. Even riding with very low tire pressures (<50psi in front) didn't seem to make much difference. Dick Denning at the Country Bike Shop suggesteted I try some Panaracer tires with much more flexible side walls. Last fall I got some Pasela Tour Guards in 700 X 35 and it made an amazing difference in the ride of the Trek. Noticeably more comfortable over rough pavement. Have ridden several hundred miles without any problems. In defense of the Maxxis tires, I never had a flat with them. They are very heavy robust commuter tires and were trouble free for me. Don't think I will be going back though. Really enjoy the comfort of the Pasela tires. Re: [RBW] I was hit by car - brief request for help - slightly on-topic
James, I read your post with interest and have several comments. I am a long time bicyclist and motorcyclist. This is a very marginal situation you were in. You may have been right but in the case of a bicycle/morotcycle to car accident you can often be DEAD RIGHT. I have been commuting frequently this winter, often in the dark and generally go by the philosophy that I am invisible. There have been several instances this winter where cars would have pulled out in front of me from side streets. I assume that they didn't see my lights or were just not looking for bicycles. I chose to hold back and wait rather than exercising my right-of-way and continuing on. When it is light out I always try to establish eye-contact with a potential vehicle that could pull out or turn in front of me. Even though you may be legally correct you must be aware of your vulnerability. Not too clear about the "lane" you were in when the other two lanes of traffic stopped to let the oncoming car turn left. You may have some legal recourse there. Take it to small claims court and see if you can get your expenses covered. I was lucky in terms of injuries. I was able to go home from the hospital after 24 hours. They kept me to observe me, because in the first 10 to 15 minutes after the accident, I didn't really know things like my name. But then it came back before I got to the hospital. I left the hospital with 4 broken ribs and cuts and bruises and the aftermath of a concussion. The following might not be on-topic, but it closely matches Maynard Hershon's first essay in RR42. It happened about a week ago, less than 48 hours after I read Maynard's essay. If you are not interested in hearing about the accident, I completely understand if you don't read it. But it does include one relevant safety lesson for bicyclists, and I am also asking for help from anyone, especially Southern CA list members, who might have a recommendation for a great lawyer who knows how to get fairness for bike-riders in traffic collisions with automobiles. I ask this, because I feel I've been unfairly treated by the law so far. The police officer's report concludes with a determination that I am the party at fault. I was riding straight ahead in an area that fills up with traffic near a shopping center. I had no stop sign or red lights to stop me. I was riding under the speed limit. There were two lanes of car traffic going in my direction, and I was riding just to the right of them, effectively in a third lane. There was no bike lane marked, and it's possible that one is supposed to be there, but was not because the road had recently been resurfaced but not painted yet. Cyclists ride along this from time-to-time, but only out of necessity. An SUV coming the opposite direction was in a left-turn lane. It turned left and drove across my path. What I remember was that upon reaching this intersection (that required no stop from me and requires the turner to turn only when oncoming traffic is clear), I was shocked to see an SUV turning left in front of me. I had no time to think. I braked and turned and skidded all at once, all the while knowing that I would hit the car. I hit the side of the car, but I don't remember the pain of impact. For the next 10 to 15 minutes, I don't know from first-hand experience what happened. I couldn't say my own name at first. Details of the accident were discussed without me but included the driver, at least one witness was referenced by the police report, and the deputy ended up deciding I was at fault; at least his report says that. Meanwhile, in the care of paramedics, I eventually knew my situation and regained my self-awareness. While I was in the ambulance, I was happy when I could tell them that I could now remember the specific accident where the car turned left in front of me. I was very relieved when they told me that my responses were good and my extremities seemed ok, and that I was going to the emergency room, because they do that for anyone who lost consciousness. (I had been unconscious for the first 30 to 60 seconds, and my helmet is cracked. I am so glad I wore it.) I haven't had a chance to have the bike frame professionally inspected yet (QB), and it might be undamaged, but the rear wheel is ruined. It must have hit the side of the car, but I don't know for sure due to my impaired mental state. So how was I determined to be at fault? Drivers moving in the same direction as I had decided to stop and yield to the driver who was turning left from the
Re: [RBW] Favorite shoes
I bought a pair of Lake MX101 mountain biking shoes a few years ago on closeout. Bought them 2 sizes big and wear them in the winter with thick wool socks. Recommend these shoes if you can find them. The Dromartis look great but are probably out of my budget... For comfort, my favorites with a pair of single strap Carnac's that I bought on sale in the mid-90s that continue to this day on someone else's feet along with the rest of the bike. Unfortunately for me, I don't use Look style pedals anymore so I have been searching for the best SPD and 'regular' shoes since then. I can tell you a lot of brands I don't like but I have not found anything that is really comfortable for day/week long rides. Thoughts? [RBW] Re: Tires for Gravel
I have been using 38mm Maxxis Overdrive tires on my touring bike for several years. Bought them to ride the sandy/gravel roads of the UP. They do well on gravel and no flats ever. They do not however provide a soft ride. After reading many opinions think I will try some Paselas non TG.
