I should also mention that I have CrMo Albatross bars if you’re interested
Edwin. Some scratches from mounting them, but I only rode them for a couple
of months.

Any interest in the bullmoose bars, Edwin?

he lowered the price it became more and more enticing. I would have bought
it but I've got several bikes that overlap with the Cheviot. I'd love to
see how you set it up if you've got pictures.

I don’t know about Riv restocking, as they just had them in February, but
CL Cycle have a lime-olive or a Forest Green in stock. They are in Canada,

I'm certain that RBW headquarters has the Clems on their framesets and
completes schedule for later this year. For now, it's a waiting game to see
when exactly when.

Between now and then, it will give you time to save up more money for your

[RBW] Re: WTB: 59 Clem L Frameset

2024-07-07 Thread Kim H.
Yes, for an aging senior cyclist, the Clem is an all-rounder bike both on
and off road, but no single track. There are times that I wish I could test
ride a Platypus for the possibility of owning a second bike. However, I
cannot afford one right now. From what I have read herein the past
discussions, the Platypus is more of a light and nimbler bicycle, than the
Clem. The Clem tends to be a heavier bike. However, it performance and
abilities out weight the heaviness. For now, I am running SimWorks HOMAGE
43mm tires on my Clem for mostly pavement at maximum psi.

[RBW] Re: WTB: 59 Clem L Frameset

2024-07-07 Thread Kim H.
IMHO, you would be better off with a 59cm Clem frameset with your PBH of
90.5cm. For me, last fall, I sold mine, because it was too darn large for
me to handle with a PBH of 80.1cm. I, in turn, bought a 52cm Clem. It is
truly more of an enjoyable handling bicycle compared the the 59cm with my
long torso and short limbs.

Re: [RBW] Re: WTB: 54-56 Sam Hillborne (i think? my first riv!) but open to other Rivs

2024-07-04 Thread 'Paul Germain' via RBW Owners Bunch
 Jacob,
Others may have to weigh in on this, but I'm inclined to say the chain stay
length has not changed for the Sam Hillborne - yet. Since the Homer Hilsen did
get longer, it may just be a matter of time. I own personal preference would
not to mess with it. Some minor changes were made since my 2015 model, mainly
the seat cluster. But that is rather a minor aesthetic difference. I think my
original double top tube 2007 Sam used a different tubing, before their
"Silver" tubes were introduced.(My guess is the "socket-type" connection used
on most Riv models now at the seat cluster is easier (cheaper?) to manufacture
and probably takes less skill / time / labor to braze. (I would like to know if
one of you RBW frame builders can answer, I would be obliged.)

2024-07-02 Thread Roberta
It's very exciting especially when the anticipation is high and the
resulting bike is even better.

Analog Cycles in VT may have some built up. I think Maine Bike Works is
also a dealer. I do believe that there is a Homer riding guy at Keystone
bikes in Philadelphia, but they aren't a Riv dealer, yet. Isn't there some
fabulous dealer in Chicago--Mack's?
https://www.rivbike.com/pages/dealers?_pos=1&_sid=1f17f0872&_ss=r

I was lucky enough to be able to try a number of models in my size when
Analog was located in MD. I've had enough to know my Riv sizing. Lastly,
perhaps a trip to HQ? You won't even need to rent a car to visit them.

I think a Sam would be an excellent choice for you based on your needs and
wants.

2024-06-27 Thread John Johnson
Hi Doug,

I can confirm that La Chouette (Paris) has a 52 in green right now. At
least their website says so, and they are usually pretty good about keeping
their stock up to date.

Of course, it's more expensive than buying direct from Riv and then there's
the whole issue of moving it from France to wherever you are located.

I am located in France, I work about 10 minutes from La Chouette, I confirm
that they are great and super helpful guys, and I'm happy to broker on your
behalf if you don't find an easier solution (i.e. a used 52 somewhere in
the US).

cheers,

John

Yes, your Sam will come with a Kalloy seatpost. The ones in the last batch
were 300mm.

Re: [RBW] Re: WTB: 50 cm Roadini

2024-05-14 Thread Doug H.
The 47 is the previous geometry, I think. I compared the two on Bike
Insights and there is quite a difference, more so than you'd think between
the sizes. The 47 has much less stack and the top tube is about 4 cm
shorter. I'd hold out for a 50 in the newer geometry if I were Leah. The
newer models can handle wider tires too.

and whatever you load on top of the rack, and the lower tier is off-set

The Dream bar was the classic standard drop bar made for Rivendell by
Nitto. If I remember correctly its what they offered prior to the Noodle.
It was sold along with the Noodle bar for a bit before they just dropped it
because the Noodle was the drop they would suggest over all others.

Re: [RBW] Re: WTB: Soba Handlebars

2024-04-27 Thread Conway Bennett
Bill,

Thanks for the clarification. My posts weren't meant to be adversarial,
just pedantic. I came into Riv via EcoVelo ~2010, and I didn't own my
first Riv until 2013, so the "Soba" predates me, and I thought that y'all
were using it colloquially for "So Bar"--the marketing content from Sim
Works makes references to literal soba noodles. I'm curious if the
contemporary "So Bar" is inspired by the "Soba".

Re: [RBW] Re: WTB: Soba Handlebars

2024-04-27 Thread Igor
Retro-Gression sells both the Noodle (Which is the M177) and the Dream
(M176). Both, per the description, are designed by Rivendell, and I notice
that the M176 is 26mm clamp, has a 140mm drop/90mm reach - is this the Soba
or something
else? https://www.retro-gression.com/products/nitto-m176-dream-handlebar

Re: [RBW] Re: WTB: Soba Handlebars

2024-04-26 Thread Bill Lindsay
The Simworks So Bar is a handlebar that resembles a Nitto Noodle but in a
wide width that was made in the late 2010s and early 2020s

The Nitto Soba Noodle is a completely different handlebar that was made by
Nitto and offered by Rivendell in the mid to late 2000s

Do not conflate the two. This thread and WTB is focused on the Nitto Soba
Noodle -NOT- the Simworks So Bar.

I think the So Bar came out in the fall of 2018. Here's the intro from Sim
Works:

https://sim-works.com/en/news/ramen-nope-i-take-so-bar

They also appear to have a sleeve. But I've never owned the So Bar, so I
don't know what the production model was like in practice. I had a 50 cm
Rando Bar from Velo Orange that I really liked at the time the So Bar was
released, and that's why I didn't buy it, but I love 50 cm + drop bars.

It seems as though there is plans for a new iteration of the So Bar. Sim
Works USA wrote, "These were a very popular bar that we've temporarily
discontinued while we make some changes to a new version."

I'm a bit of a Noodle/drop bar connoisseur myself. I currently in use the
Crust Nullabar on my Monstercross, Sim Works Wild Honey on my Lightning
Bolt, and Ritchey Corralitos on my Hunqapillar. I wish the Fairweather All
Road 174 AA bar was offered in a wider size, but my criticism of the 54 cm
Noodle is that it lost the back sweep that enjoyed in the Noodle as it got
wider.

When RIvendell sold them back in the day I think Grant said they were about
60g lighter than a standard noodle bar. That is right in line with what you
found, Bill.

[RBW] Re: WTB: Soba Handlebars

2024-04-26 Thread Bill Lindsay
"Where did y'all read these were a lightweight Nitto Noodle?"

They were already out of production when I came in 2009. If I type "Nitto
Soba Noodle" into the googler, I get hits to bike forums in 2007 discussing
them. At that time they are talking about how the regular Noodle mod 177
is the heavier cheaper version, and the Soba Noodle is in Nittos
"ultralight" flavor.

There are 9 of them in my garage right now. 8 are on bikes, and 1 is
loose. 7 are Mod 177 Noodles, and 2 are the Soba Noodle. The shape is
identical. I guess you'd just have to take my word for it. I'm kind of a
Noodle zealot. Most of the 9 in my garage are 460mm and a couple are
440mm.

The loose bar is the model 177 regular Noodle. It has 460 stamped in the
end and it measures 460mm center to center. The Soba Noodle that went on
my new Roadeo had 460 stamped in the end and it also measures 460mm center
to center. The regular Noodle has a "sleeve" in the middle, with embossed
Nitto graphics into the metal of the sleeve. The Soba Noodle has a bulge
in the middle, and the Nitto graphics are black ink or similar printing on
the metal. My build notes indicate I weighed the Soba Noodle at 310g. The
loose regular 460mm Noodle weighs 372g on the same gram scale just now.

Maybe?

Several years back I sold a Complete Toyo Atlantis to a neighbor. I sold
the whole bike for $1900 and now looking at it through a 2024 lens, I gave
it away. I reached out to my neighbor to see if he'd sell it back. My
neighbor indicated he lives overseas for now, and that he sold the frame
set for $1400 a while back. The build kit is still in his garage, around
the corner from me. I've asked him to sell me back the build kit, and I'm
awaiting his response on that. If I procure that build kit, the wheel set

[RBW] Re: WTB: Soba Handlebars

2024-04-26 Thread Bill Lindsay
I've got three of them in my stable, and would buy several more. I've told
Grant at least once that if he got Nitto to make 200 of them, and he did a
presale at $150, that I bet he could pre-sell them before any of them
actually get made. That would be a nice $30,000 cash flow exercise. I'm
sure there are barriers to doing such a thing that I don't know, but the
$140 MSRP on Rene Herse bars certainly suggests that $150 is a price point
that would make sense for all involved.

America vendors, which makes good sense) and things like batteries now fall
under restrictions for dangerous cargo. Rose removed the cycle computer
from my order because of the single CR2032 battery couldn't be shipped
outside of the EU without extensive paperwork!

Naturally, with this being the RBW list, look for local options first.
Maybe a list member is holding just what you are looking for. :)

Lighting articles in general are a great deal over there, bc they're a
commodity. Most bikes in Germany are sold with lighting -- it's required
 on
bikes used on public roads, with some exemptions for lightweight road
 bikes
-- so it's a huge market, and that helps.

[RBW] Re: WTB 26" Front Wheel with Generator Hub

2024-03-27 Thread Ian A
Just be aware that is a fairly low end dynamo in the Shimano range.
Slightly heavy and draggy in comparison to the higher end Shimano and SP
products.

Some shopping around on the German sites might get you an SP hub or an
LX/XT hub built into a wheel. Shimano does have a restriction on allowing
the export of their products from Europe to North America. A complete wheel
might be excepted from the restriction.

I have bought a fair bit of stuff over the years (Tubus racks, B lights,
Brooks Saddles, Ortlieb panniers and handlebar bag, tires, spokes and
nipples etc) and quite a few of those items are now restricted for export.
Xxcycle in France doesn't seem to observe those restrictions (yet). Maybe
they do now, my last order was while back.

My main reason for ordering from Germany is because the economy shipping
option comes through the regular postal system and gets delivered by Canada
Post on this end. Canadian consumers will have horror stories of shipments
delivered via UPS and FedEx due to the brokerage fees for customs entry.
Also, shipping tends to be faster to Canada from Europe than from the USA.
