Re: [RollTideFan] Last play of UGA/Au Game...

2001-11-10 Thread Jeff Todd

Yes, I saw it. And like you, I was dumbfounded. Georgia was out of time-outs
and Richt knew it. What on earth was he thinking?

BAMA / arbrin is always a tough game for both teams. At least that's the way
I remember the last 20 contests.

BAMA waxed arbrins ass the last time they played in the barn. The first half
was all-barn. Shaun Alexander took over the game in the second half, with
Tyler Watts at QB. Chris Samuels gave a speech at half-time that must have
scared the crap out of everyone. I just wish he'd kicked a urinal off the
wall. :) Some where around here, I've got a video documentary about that
game. It includes footage from the locker room at half-time.

There's no doubt that BAMA is harder to defend with Watts at the helm. Like
you, Rick, I'm hoping that TW is healthy for the game at the barn. But I've
got some serious doubts about that. Groin injuries aren't known for healing
overnight, or in a few days.

Tyler's 'wheels' are his greatest physical asset. If Watts' injury doesn't
heal completely; we've suddenly got *TWO* immobile QB's. If that turns out
to be the case, I hope Zow leads BAMA to a win at the barn!

Zow has a 'GUN' for an arm. Problem is that his arm is usually a 7mm, when a
.22 caliber would suffice. The good news is that BAMA *CAN* beat arbrin with
a solid running game, alone. Santonio Beard and Donnie Lowe should give us
just enough of a 1-2 punch to open up the passing game if we need it. Then
it's up to the QB to make the throws. We've definitely got the 'Good Hands'
people running pass routes!

*BUT*... we all know that the BAMA defense will decide the outcome of this
game. arbrin has some receivers who are legitimate threats. And a couple, or
three of them are a helluva lot bigger than our DB's. I'm talking about
serious match up problems. The good news is that arbrins QB's do not deliver
the ball to them on a consistent basis.

arbrins offensive line is pretty good as long as they're allowed to tackle
anyone who has them beat. They don't have a single offensive lineman that
can stop Moorehead, King, Loescher, or Johnson. Unless, of course they're
allowed to tackle them.

BAMAS DB's need to put some 'stick-um' on their gloves for this game. Both
of arbrins QB's are known for throwing the ball into coverage. Kind of like
Andrew Zow does.

arbrins kicking game is better than BAMAS. Not a lot better, mind you. But
we don't have a PK that is a threat from 65 yards. arbrin does.

Tommy Tubesteak is notorious for calling *Trick Plays*. More times than not,
those plays fail. But that doesn't seem to deter Tubesteak. BAMA will have
to be on their toes at all times. And we don't need Coach Fran pulling any
stunts.

All things considered, arbrin is supposed to win this game. But they won't!

BAMA is gonna wax their ass!

Roll Tide!!

Slef

[RollTideFan] Iron Bowl 2001 Prediction

2001-11-10 Thread Hugh Wolfgang

Coach Fran's closing words on Friday with Fran prior to the Mississippi
State game:
"If the game lasts until 3 o'clock, at 3:01 we will start thinking about
. "

Of course, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to fill in that blank.

Auburn enters Iron Bowl 2001 with a 7-2 record, and can clinch a spot in
Atlanta with a win.
Alabama, on the other hand, is playing for their post-season life. With a
win over Auburn and a win on Nov. 29 against
Southern Miss, the Tide will be bowl eligible.

It was obvious today that Bama wasn't looking ahead to the Iron Bowl. But
now that the Dawgs from Starkvegas have been put back in their cages, it's
time to focus on the biggest game of the year.

The last time Alabama entered Jordan-Hare Stadium, it was under the
direction of Mike DuBose, in 1999. The Tide had never beaten Auburn on the
plains, until that fateful day - November 20, 1999. But we all know that
the final on that day was 28-17, as the Tide won the SEC West and went on to
beat Florida - for the seond time that year - and advance to the Orange Bowl
as SEC Champs.

One piece of useless trivia: The last time Alabama and Auburn played this
yearly - on Nov. 17 or earlier - was Nov. 16, 1907, at the Birmingham Fair
Grounds. That game ended in the series ONLY tie, at 6-6.

Both teams enter the Iron Bowl coming off of important wins. Auburn beat
Georgia in a nail-biter, while Bama came from behind for a critical win over
Miss. State. Auburn hasn't won back-to-back Iron Bowls since the Curry
years, when the Tigers won 4 straight from 1986-89.

I'm going to go out on a limb here, and do something I haven't done much of
late. I'm predicting an upset. As Coach Fran said back in December when he
was introduced as the Head Coach of the Crimson Tide football team... "Hell
yes, I can beat Auburn!". And he - no, they - will.

Alabama 35
Auburn 31

[RollTideFan] Tide wins 4th quarter and game...

2001-11-10 Thread J.E. Lisby

Andrew Zow replaced an injured Tyler Watts at quarterback and led Alabama
to a 24-17 victory over Mississippi State Saturday. The win broke a
four-game Crimson Tide losing streak and a four-game Southeastern
Conference skid for Bama and kept alive the possibility of a post-season
bowl game for Alabama.

For most of this year Alabama has been plagued by fourth quarter
shortcomings. Against Mississippi State the Tide outscored the Bulldogs
14-0 in the final period. Bama had taken a 10-0 lead in the first half, but
by the end of the third quarter Mississippi State had forged to a 17-10
advantage, and Bama was without Watts, who went out in the first quarter
with a pulled groin muscle.

I've blamed the defense all year for the folding in the 4th quarter (and I
think I'm in a minority in doing so). A lot of people say that the offense
has caved in the 4th quarter too, and gone away from the game plan. Today,
they didn't, and the result was a come from behind win, rather than a blown
save.

Hugh, I just want to say this one thing. ANDREW DOESN'T PLAY DEFENSE!

I was holding my breath anticipating that our defense would give up the big
play on 3rd or 4th down late in the game like they've done so often this
year. Andrew AND the defense played great in the 4th quarter today. Those
other loses were not Tyler Watts' fault, so stop insinuating they were. That
is all.

ANYBODY is going to struggle mightily when thrust into the game unprepared,
and Zow doesn't get the reps in practice that Watts does. Nonetheless, he's
certainly proven - to me, at least - his ability to move the team down for
scores. If he'd played more, Bama would probably not be facing a must-win
situation at Auburn next Saturday.

Zow from the shotgun... TERRIBLE pass, but it was tipped at the line.

Handoff to Lowe for a few.
Complete now to Collins, 1st Down!
>From the 27... make it the 28, Beard now takes it to the 26.
Late flag on the play. Personal Foul against Bama. 2nd and 22 upcoming.
Back to pass... Incomplete, another flag down. This one will probably be a
late hit by MSU on Zow. No, they called it HOLDING on Bama???
Watts back on the field, but he's hobbling.
3rd and 22. Zow fires over the middle toward Collins at the 20, flag on the
play, it'll be interference on the 'Dawgs and an automatic first down for
the Tide at the 25.
Beard with a huge hole to the 5! FIRST AND GOAL ALABAMA!
Beard now ahead for 6... points, that is.
He was hit at the 4 but dragged the defender into the endzone. The PAT is
good.

[RollTideFan] BPH Game Preview

2001-11-10 Thread William H Evans

http://www.postherald.com/ba111001.shtml

One final chance
Tide, seniors have no breathing room

By Greg Wallace
BIRMINGHAM POST-HERALD

TUSCALOOSA — When Jason McAddley, Freddie Milons, and the rest of their
senior classmates entrusted their careers to the University of Alabama
one cold February afternoon, they surely had vivid dreams of roaring
crowds and a rousing sendoff from Bryant-Denny Stadium as revered
football legends on this day, their last in the Crimson Tide's true home.

If you had suggested they'd be fighting for their postseason lives and
trying to win just their fourth home game in two seasons, they'd have
dismissed you as crazy, foolish, or an Auburn fan.

But as Alabama (3-5, 2-4 SEC) prepares to face Mississippi State (2-5,
1-4 SEC) at 11:30 a.m. today, these are the stinging realities: Today's
loser will be eliminated from postseason play, and if Alabama falls, it
will clinch its first consecutive losing seasons since 1955-57.
Furthermore, the Tide has won just three of its past seven games in
Bryant-Denny Stadium.

All of which has McAddley flustered and searching for solutions.

"I think we've played well," he said. "We've gotten the worst of
circumstances. Sometimes the record doesn't show how good a team is. Our
record is lot better than it shows. But we go out on game day, and it
doesn't happen. It's like, 'What are we doing wrong?' "

Four consecutive SEC losses — including three games where Alabama blew a
fourth-quarter lead — have pushed the Tide to the edge of bowl
elimination. To qualify for a bowl game, Alabama must win its last three
games — today, at Auburn, and against Southern Miss Nov. 29 at Legion
Field — and hope a bowl committee deems it worthy. Even with three
victories, it is possible Alabama won't qualify for one of the seven SEC
bowl slots and will have to hope for an at-large bid.

No room for error; every game is a must.

"Even if we win it, the next game's still going to be a sudden-death
match for a bowl or no bowl," McAddley said. "We have to win out if we
want to go to a bowl. This week's big in that aspect, just like the next
week will be big, and the week after that will be big."

Mississippi State provides the perfect remedy; after beating Memphis in
the season opener, the Bulldogs lost five consecutive before rallying
past SEC patsy Kentucky last week.

Four-year starting quarterback Wayne Madkin has struggled, and was pulled
at halftime last week, watching sophomore Kevin Fant rally the ÃDogs to
victory. MSU Coach Jackie Sherrill says the two will split time today,
but the starter is unknown.

Injuries in the Bulldogs' offensive line and to star tailback Dicenzo
Miller have turned the MSU run attack from strength to liability.
Overall, MSU averages only 125 yards on the ground, 11th in the SEC, and
its scoring offense is last in the nation at 12 ppg.

Momentum careened out of Sherrill's control, with the ebb a 21-9
homecoming loss to I-A newcomer Troy State.

"After you look at all of our circumstances this season and the way
certain things have happened, it's not tough to believe that we are
entering this game fighting for our postseason lives," he said. "A lot of
people like to immediately point to coaching. But there has just been
things we couldn't control happen to this team."

Expect MSU, as usual, to pound the ball at Alabama's defensive front,
which would be a relief to Alabama defensive coordinator Carl Torbush,
whose job security became questionable this week after LSU scorched his
defense for 611 yards, an Alabama-worst. MSU averages only 195 yards per
game passing.

If Sherrill steps out of character and lets his quarterbacks heave it,
the secondary — which gave up 528 passing yards last week — must show
improvement.

"The key for us is making sure that we put those guys in the very, very
best position to have a chance to be successful," Torbush said. "And then
when we do, they have to tackle well and make some plays."

The secondary's struggles have been blamed on youth, a common trait on
this team. Of the 22 seniors making their Bryant-Denny farewell today,
only McAddley, Milons, Terry Jones Jr., and Neal Thomas will start, and
few others have lent significant contributions.

Alabama Coach Dennis Franchione said they won't know what they had until
it is gone.

"It's a hard time young men have at this age," he said. "You have to lose
what you have to appreciate it. We talk lot about that. Enjoying four
years, enjoying each game, enjoying the grind because it won't always be
there."

Milons isn't concerned with a home finale; he just wants the next two
weeks to matter.

"A win would mean so much to me," he said. "To the players, to the whole
program, to get a win. Get over the hump. All I know is wins. I don't
want to make a habit of losing."

Alabama scouting report

WHO: Alabama (3-5, 2-4 SEC) vs. Mississippi State (2-5, 1-4 SEC).

ALL EYES ON: Alabama receiver Freddie Milons. This is Milons'
Bryant-Denny farewel
