I agree 100% with B's opinion. The Time reviewer's opinion seems to

Just a bit!

As for Torchwood, they were founded in the Dr. Who episode Tooth and
Claw by Queen Victoria to protect England from extra-terrestrial
threats (i.e. the Doctor). They were mentioned in several episodes in
season 2.

Torchwood season 1 was uneven, to say the best. Some really good
episodes and some really not so good ones. You can Fanon a lot away
by saying "well, they're the rump/branch office of Torchwood, right?"
but thankfully season two has the team a lot more cohesive and less
dysfunctional.

It's a strange thing. The legion has always beena bit on the strange
side when it came to ethnicities. Almost all of their human members
tended to be white people (one black man, one Jewish character). It
seemed that Earth's extraterrestrial colonies were entirely inhabited

I think having KK be Asian is a bit strange. While it's good to see a

Re: [scifinoir2] New Spider-Man Cartoon Aired today

2008-03-13 Thread Justin Mohareb
Black Kryptonians were from

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vathlo_Island

Vathlo Island, "Home of a highly developed black race".

"Vathlo Island is populated by a "highly developed black race" of
Kryptonians, and "retained its independence throughout history and did
not join the planetary federation, though good relations were
maintained". Black Kryptonians were first shown in Superman #234, with
the island itself shown on a map in #239. Vathlo was rarely if ever
referenced beyond these few issues, although a black Kryptonian named
"Iph-Ro of Vathlo" appeared in the more recent Superman: The Man of
Steel # 111. An offhand reference to the island was made in Alan
Moore's story For the Man Who Has Everything, where "racial trouble
with the Vathlo Island immigrants," are mentioned in a dream world
Krypton that had avoided destruction."

It seems to be a case of writers giving black characters space, as you
mentioned in your last post. So that leads to the problem of whether
segregation is a good way to present fictional characters of colour.

I still wanna say that it's better than the abomination that was the
Freedom Force story Nicieza wrote during the first Gufl War.

2008-05-03 Thread Justin Mohareb
Comics & Games Retailer used to have a lot of info on publicising FCBD
events. It's a shame they stopped publishing.

My last two FLCSs each had a big roadside sign in front of the store
for the few weeks preceding it. It seemed to work pretty well.

Of course, all the thunder in this area is stolen by the Silver Snail
and the Beguiling, but that's just because those are two of the
biggest (or at least most significant) shops in the country. So they
get Stuart Immonen and Leonard Kirk and Ty Templeton.

[scifinoir2] Iron Man: The Bit After the Credits: SPOILERS ZOMG!

2008-05-03 Thread Justin Mohareb
See, I'm even putting in a couple blank lines.

Wadda wadda wadda.

Zubbi Zubbi Zubbi.

Okay, I knew only two things going into this. A) There was talk that
SLJ would appear as Nick Fury, but that there'd been nothing else
mentioned about it since. B) Everyone was telling me, quite
enthusiastically, that I should stay after the credits.

During the film, Paltro's Pepper Potts (say that three times fast.
It's not terribly hard, but it is fun) gets approached by an agent of
the Strategic Homeland Something Something Something... Feh, a SHIELD
agent. Now, he didn't say SHIELD until the very end, but you knew
that's who it was. He even had a neat gadget for opening doors.

So my hindbrain said "ZOMG! The bit after the credits is SLJ as Nick Fury!"

I even texted my wife to confirm that's what I thought it was gonna be.

And it was! Huzzah! I am so Smrt!

And that's pretty much what happened after the credits. I hope he
appears in the Incredible Hulk too.

Subject: [SouthOntario-B5] Wow: Babylon 5 and Babylon Prime

I reveived my Volume 15 yesterday and sat down and read the original
outline. At first read, upto about season 3/4 you think despite the
changes cast... Not to many major difference.

Then season 4 and 5, holy cow! What a different direction the series was
to go in. It's really interesting to see how Babylon5 was to end and
possibly result in the series Babylon Prime.

Season 5 would have had a coup of Miltary Cast over throwing the Grey
Council.

Londo / Centauri take control of the sector that has Babylon 5.

The Shadows destroy a major part of the Vorlons race with the help of the
Centauri's... But Earth gets blamed.

With season 5 ending with Babylon 5 destroyed by the Minbari attacking.
Delenn / Sinclair and the child (we know as David) running off in exhile.

That would have been the new series Babylon Prime (revolving around
Babylon 4).

The Army bits in Transformers made me think they'd originally planned

The biggest problem I had with TF was that they killed the black robot

At this point, it's pretty much possible for an established star to
put their own production company together, pick a project they want,
and get it done themselves. I'm pretty sure he could put something
together for a couple million dollars if he wanted to.

Look at some of the stuff Clooney has done (Good Night, Good Luck) or
the Bobby Kennedy movie. These were projects the creators believed

This is Christmas early for the stock holders at Marvel
Entertainment. It is the death knell for a lot of great characters.

Disney to Buy Marvel Entertainment for $4 Billion

The Walt Disney Company said on Monday that it has agreed to buy
Marvel Entertainment, bringing together the house of Mickey Mouse
with the publisher of Spider-Man, for $4 billion in cash and stock.

Under the terms of the deal, Disney will pay $30 a share in cash
and .745 Disney shares for every Marvel share, with no less than 40
percent of the deal being made in stock. Disney valued the deal at
$50 a share as of the companies' share prices on Friday.

Isaac Perlmutter, Marvel's chief executive, will continue to
oversee his company's properties, including more than 5,000
characters that also include Iron Man and the X-Men.

Marvel has had a string of successful movies based on its
characters, which analysts have praised in part for the company's
taking an active role in their production.

"This transaction combines Marvel's strong global brand and world-
renowned library of characters including Iron Man, Spider-Man, X-
Men, Captain America, Fantastic Four and Thor with Disney's
creative skills, unparalleled global portfolio of entertainment
properties, and a business structure that maximizes the value of
creative properties across multiple platforms and territories, "
Robert A. Iger, Disney's chief executive, said in a statement.

"Disney is the perfect home for Marvel's fantastic library of
characters given its proven ability to expand content creation and

I hope it does not conflict with my Big Mama/Madea fanfic.

Count me as "no longer watching". Season one was going well, but it
ran out of gas at the end and season two was almost unwatchable. I
think my wife & I still have half of season three on our PVR, alone,
unwatched and unloved.

I have to admit, I missed all of last season. A lot of the buzz I

wasn't very good. Some say it was okay, better than the abbreviated
season two, but nowhere nearly as good as the debut season. Others--
and that's a lot of folks--have said it's just no longer a good show
at all.

What do y'all say? Anyone here still faithfully watching? If so,
what are your thoughts on the show to date?

Re: [scifinoir2] "Dollhouse" Returns tonight

2009-09-25 Thread Justin Mohareb
Yep. Just like Firefly, it nearly got torpedoed by network
interference, but once they got past the network mandated motorcycle
chases, it got REALLY good. The last several episodes were very good.
Plus, Patton Oswalt. The finale was particularly good, especially
since it never even got broadcast in the US.

Re: [scifinoir2] "Dollhouse" Returns tonight

2009-09-25 Thread Justin Mohareb
To be honest, I still can't figure out why.

Apparently it had something to do with there being X number of
episodes ordered, but they produced x+1 episodes because they retooled
the pilot, so Fox didn't show the last episode.

Epitaph one, the final ep, was very neat, and took the show in an
interesting direction.

Actually, I believe he mentioned using the actor who played her
daughter in the first film, since she'll have actually grown into the
role in the intervening decade and a half.

I believe he mentioned filming scenes on an ongoing basis.
