Bad Behavior SM 2.11 on Win7 64

2013-01-04 Thread G. Ross
My XP machine is breaking up so got a new one with Win7, 64 bit.. SM
2.014 froze up constantly after opening. Installed SM 2.11 and it
does the same. About half the time it just greys out and stops
responding. Often when it is finally closed it leaves the program
"running" in task manager so have to go and manually end it.

Is there any silver lining to this? Any suggestions appreciated.

You might try deleting (after backing it up) your SeaMonkey profile and
your preferences file. Then re-install SeaMonkey, creating a fresh
profile and see if it works. You may have some corruption in your
profile or in the SeaMonkey's preferences file.

Did this. Seemed to work for a while, then froze again. Overall it is
working better.

Thanks

start with making sure you have minimum font size set to "none"
in
Preferences/Appearance/Fonts

Try the following:

1. On the SeaMonkey menu bar, select [Edit> Preferences].

2. On the left side of the Preferences window under Category, select
[Appearance> Content].

3. On the Content pane, put a check mark in the checkbox for "Remember
zoom levels on per-site basis".

4. Select the OK button.

Thanks for the suggestions. Nothing is working so far (haven't tried
the no
squint.) Should have mentioned this is 2.014 on Win7. The content
pane does not have a check box for "Remember zoom levels". It only
has "Use smooth scrolling" whatever that is, "Resize large images to
fit --", and "Zoom only text, not full page".

Working fine here -- did your mail toolbar get hidden? (in the Compose

Thanks! It was checked in the Show/hide as usual, but there was a

Henry, there was a change in file format in the move from SM 1.x to SM
2.x. So, to be safe, you might have to install SM 1.1.19 (this should
pick up your Mozilla profile), then install SM 2.0 and the 2.1 to make
sure the file conversion occurs, and then you should be able to install
SM 2.17 ( the latest version).

All these other versions are downloaded from the bottom of

So, isn't that a call for copying those C:\ files somewhere off the computer

Do you not backup your hard drive? Get a portable hard drive that
plugs into the USB port and a good backup program. Do a backup
regularly, and next time you can just restore the new drive to the
point of your last backup. I worked in a hospital once that had also
never heard of a backup. The hard drive crashed on one of the office
computers. They sent the drive to have the data retrieved but somehow
the thing was thrown away. Years of data lost forever.

Assuming you're meaning using SeaMonkey, I'm not sure what your issue is.

Mine is set so that every computer I use has the same IMAP accounts and
all of them show all messages, archives, folders, etc. going back to the
beginning of time. I would think the only limitation would be your
email provider and their limits on storage. Mine is Gigabytes so I've
yet to run into an issue.

If you're having trouble please tell us how your IMAP account(s) are
configured.

Yes I am using SeaMonkey. My email provider limits each account to 2 GB
and one of my accounts is at 1.74GB, lots of PDF's attached to the emails.

I want to preserve the mails and attachments and locally is better for me.

Synchronization is great because the computers I use occasionally (once
a week) match my main computer. But, I would like to remove older
messages (30 days) from the server without deleting them from all my
computers also. I have found that deleting from the server deletes from
the local computers also. I am afraid to change any of my settings
because I do not want to inadvertently delete my older local messages.
Hopefully any changes will not delete any older messages.

My current synchronization settings are:

Keep messages for this account on this computer
Synchronize all messages locally regardless of age
Don't delete any messages
Always keep flagged messages

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I move my keepers to archives, but now I don't know if they are still
on the server. So you have got me wondering about the usefulness of
archives.

Re: Browser slow

2016-02-13 Thread G. Ross

G. Ross wrote:

G. Ross wrote:

I have used seamonkey since it was mozilla. It seems to be getting
slower (browser). Weather.com takes forever to load all it's little
programs and sometimes hangs, for the past month. Mail and newsgroups
do fine. I updated to the latest version of Seamonkey with no
appreciable speed-up. I have Java, NoScript enabled. Flash set to
always ask.

In desperation I tried Internet Exploder for the weather.com and it
pops up almost instantaneously.

Any advice appreciated.

I uninstalled the new Seamonkey and re-installed the old version
(2.26.1) that I had been using and now it loads the weather super
fast. I can't understand it but something fixed it.

Thank you all for taking the time to try to help me. It's nice to
know that there is a community of users out there willing to spend
time helping an old codger like me.

Clarification: Before initially uninstalling 2.26.1 I copied all the
files in the Seamonkey directory to another place, also copied the
files from Users/appdata/ low and roaming.

Then I installed the new version without any change in behavior. I
uninstalled this but DID NOT install 2.26.1 again. I simply copied
the above files back to where they were and made an icon to start
Seamonkey and it works great. But according to Control Panel
Seamonkey is not installed. Browser brings up things faster than ever
before. Is this weird?

I looked in my Cache directory and found Cache, and Cache2. Cache2

Thanks for all the responses. I don't remember it as being all that

A _possible_ alternative might be toggling font face/metric of

Instead of re marking it as unread, you can right click on the heading

Who is your internet provider? They may provide newsgroups. Check
with them and see. Most of them do not provide binary newsgroups (the
ones that contain pictures, music, etc.) but some still provide
regular text newsgroups. If your provider DOES have newsgroups their
site should have instructions on how to set up to use them.

If your provider does not have newsgroups, then you need to subscribe
to a website that does. I use giganews.com It costs 4.99 per month
to subscribe and they have given good service. Some are free. Do a
search for "newsgroups" (without the quotation marks). Once you get
signed up to one, they should provide instructions on how to use them,

The filters are in the email account folders in files called:
msgFilterRules.dat

Simply copy those from one machine to the other. Unless you're changing
them a lot this should be a one-time thing.

I have several email accounts, some with filters, some without. All
the msgFilterRules.dat files are identical, with two lines;

so there must be another file with the actual rules.

On my machine, the various instances do have content, and they're

On thinking about it, mine are not actual filters. They are ones I

Is there any way to populate the message with the attached images? (So

2.6.1 which is almost 3.5 years outdated or 2.26.1 which is more recent?
What version of Firefox?

Found this for Windows [Error message: "The application failed to

More here [application failed initialize properly

Looks like a Windows problem.

You need at least XP Service Pack 2 to run SeaMonkey, SP3 recommended.

Can't help you with Mac but on windows there is a selection in the

size. This seems to make the text larger in the areas you mentioned.
Until my eye surgery I had to use the largest size but now changed

When you attempt to send a message, SeaMonkey will prompt you for the
password. There will be a checkbox to remember that password. It's the
same password manager used in the browser.

To send an email reply, control-click on the message, and select "Reply
to Sender Only". There's also a small arrow beside the Reply toolbar
icon, that will let you choose whether to reply in the newsgroup or to
the sender only.

To save a copy of a newsgroup article, you can either:
* drag the message to any mail folder
* control-click on the message and select "Copy To"
* On the menu bar, go to the Message menu and select "Copy To"
* Add the "File" toolbar icon to the toolbar, and click on it to copy
the message to a folder.

Websites change all the time. They might just have changed something
internally. 2.39 is outdated and will fail rendering more and more websites
correctly.
2.48 is almost ready so if you want to skip 2.46 you can grab the 2.48
candidate build.

Hang onas I understand it, NoOp, e-mail and irc files are not
written to cache, just files required to display a web-site in the browser.

If these files are already written to cache, if a crash occurs why do I
need them re-written somewhere else?? All I should need is a listing of
the sites that were open in the browser at the time of failure, so, when
re-started, FF/SM could re-create my browser screen, either by using the
files in Cache *or* re-downloading the files from the sites if expired.

So why the double up??

I found that when I click on "Clear Cache" in
preferences/advanced/cache, the cache folder is renamed cache trash
and a new, empty, cache folder is created. So then it is necessary to
delete the cache trash to actually clear out the disk space. Don't
know what happens in a crash as I have never had that happen that I
remember.

Startup in browser only

2020-04-20 Thread G. Ross
Recently installed v 2.46. With the previous version I had two
desktop icons. One was Seamonkey.exe -browser and the other was
Seamonkey.exe -mail. The one for mail works as usual but the other
one opens the browser then the mail windows. It will not allow the
-browser part. Is there another way to open only the browser window?

What does it do when you open with seamonkey.exe without the " -browser"

Sometimes it opens the browser, and when I close it then have to close
the mail page. Sometimes it opens the browser then immediately opens
the mail page.

Look in about:config for
general.startup
and set what you want to start as TRUE.
I have mine set for browser only.

Why not just use Edit > Preferences > Appearance and set "When SeaMonkey
starts up, open" and check "Browser"? It does the same thing.

If I do that, it will only open the browser and cannot get into the
mail. Also, the "seamonkey.exe -mail" will not work. Guess I'll just
close the mail pane when I want to use the browser to do a Lookup.

Do you not have the icons at the left end of the status bar for browser,
mail & newsgroups, composer, address book and chatzilla?

Yes, and it works fine. My original complaint is: I had two icons on
my desktop, one for browser and one for mail. This no longer works
and I miss it.

Finally! That works like I am used to. Thanks so much.

Javascript

2020-11-18 Thread G. Ross
Just started using the latest SM and when visiting local weather a
message popped up saying I need JavaScript to view it. Should I
install Javascript and if so how to get it? Thanks.

G.Ross

Javascript (as opposed to Java) is natively supported by pretty much
all browsers, if that site thinks you don't have it then I see two
possibilities:

- You have turned it off (Preferences -> Advanced -> Scripts & Plugins)
- You have something like Noscript running and that has turned it off
for you, for this site.

Or the site tests for some JS primitive that SM doesn't implement.

Or the site doesn't recognise SM and proceeds on the assumption that it
doesn't implement the JS level that it thinks is needed.

G. Ross, what's the weather web site? Do you have its exact URL you saw
this issue?
