Actually I inadvertently published a private email when I first joined
because it was not set up to reply to the list. I saw the weirdness, and
thought it was like another list which had a dead reply-to address and got
in the habit of manually putting in the listserv address instead of just
reply, and didn't notice that the mail was only addressed to me.

What's stupid is that it's set up differently for different OSM lists.
Tagging and apparently newbies use reply-to, while talk and talk-us
don't. I don't really care which way it is, but make it consistent
across lists.

[Talk-us] Reply-to field in list messages

2010-06-10 Thread David ``Smith''
Why doesn't the talk-us list use the "reply-to" field so that simple
replies go to the list, not just the original poster? The newbies
list does that. Every other e-mail list I've ever been on does that.
So why not this one?

I know I can hit "reply-all" instead of "reply" but that still
requires me to remember that the list doesn't work normally. Besides,
that still puts the OP in the "to" field, and just adds talk-us as a
CC. That's not semantically correct most of the time.

How about a poll of list members? How many of you would prefer to
reply directly to a list poster, more often than you'd like to send
the reply to the whole list?

I suspect that the "default" intention for most list members is to
send replies to the whole list. (I could be wrong, hence the poll.)
If this is true, then the list settings really should be changed, so
that messages are delivered with a "reply-to: talk...@..." line in the
header. It would save nearly everybody from occasional frustration
and frequent minor annoyance.

It's a religious topic, indeed. Every email list I'm familiar with does
the opposite of every one of yours. ;)

There are about 200 subscribers, currently. If you want the default
changed, I'm open to it, although I probably won't change it unless
there's a pretty strong consensus for it, and little dissent against a
change.

Let's not argue the merits of either approach. But, if you have an
opinion on it either way send me a quick, private mail.

Please let's not start this discussion here (again probably, I'm not
going to search the archives). This is a religious topic - there's no
"right" answer and discussions rarely result in anything positive.
For reference, please read:

A more relevant thread is at

http://lists.openstreetmap.org/pipermail/talk/2009-September/041487.html

In summary, one or more subscribers to these lists have a broken MTA that
creates an endless loop that soaks up volunteer admin time when using
reply-to-list.Therefore it is set this way in order to be able to have a
list at all.

try, replying ALL, cc's the talk-us list.
There is a setting to make it so that you dont get this message twice, for
example.

[Talk-us] Reply-to?

2009-10-13 Thread David ``Smith''
Why is it, when I receive messages from this list, they don't come
with a reply-to header so replies automatically go back to the list
and not individual sender(s)? That would be helpful. The newbies
list has such headers. I looked on the list subscription site and I
didn't see any settings that appear to relate to this.
