Spammers are targetting large freemail services (gmx, web.de, yahoo,
hotmail, msn, etc.) with name generators. Probably valid email
addresses (john.smith john_smith james.smith james_smith etc. etc.,
you get the idea) will be generated sent out.

Major services like yahoo, gmx etc. all have their own spam-filters,
maybe thats why you're getting less spam on your yahoo account.

Dear TBUDL,

Historians believe that on 16 December 2004, at 19:52:43 -0500 (which was
00:52 where I live) Watcher graced us with these comments

Every time I restart windows I have to tell TB to go ahead and
reassociate EML with TB, I have tried doing it by hand but no matter what
 it get's switched back somehow.

I know this problem well, I have had it for years.

Any suggestions as to who the very impolite app is that's stealing the
 association without asking?

Yes, It is Microsoft OE I believe. I will do a bit more digging today and
get to the bottom of it if I can.

It is a pain as it comes along silently and takes away the association with
out asking whilst The Bat! is still running.

In Options - Files Directories...

there's an option - delete attachments when message removed from trash - or
words to that effect. I guess that would do it for the future cases...

But if you mean messages now and in the past - h... don't know.

Hi Roman,
I believe you can do a backup from within TB! and check store attachments with
msg. If you then delete your current installation and reinstall using your
backup all attachments without an email msg should be gone.

I should say I have not tried this myself :( so do this at your own risk.

I would suggest maybe a few different backups?

TB What has MSN got to do with Hotmail, apart from the fact they're both
Microsoft.

W I don't know exactly the difference. It's difficult for me to
W understand. I try to explain the history :

W 1- First I needed an instant electronic mail : so I 've chosen MSN Messenger

There are other chat programs available - programs like Trillian
(which has a free version) and Miranda IM (my fave) that both allow
you access to *multiple* chat protocols (including MSN).

W 2- To work with MSN Messenger, I had to create a passport with
W a Hotmail account : so I created an address like [EMAIL PROTECTED]

This is not entirely true. You are perfectly entitled to create an MSN
passport using whatever email address you like. You are not forced to
use a hotmail account or even have one. My own MSN passport and IM
chat address is based on this one!

W 3- Microsoft force you to have a use of the hotmail at least
W one time per month. If not, your account (mail and messenger
W account) is deleted !

W 4-I didn't want to use this hotmail ...
W 5- ...

W And if I want POP and SMTP features with my Microsoft hotmail,
W it cost 20 EUR per year ! :-( A little bit expensive for just using
W Messenger and never use the mails...

So - why not get a new passport based on your regular email address
and use that and save yourself all these issues?

Yes, that's amazing how those people assume things.

Never gave the address to anybody, and the provider says he didn´t
release the info. The weird thing is, I practically don´t get spam on
the yahoo account (2-3 a week, and gone with K9).

I suspect some other things as well, lately: that spammers subscribe to
the lists in order to harvest addresses. So even if the addresses are
truncated at web interface of a list, there are those appearing in
body parts when messages arrive directly to local mailers.

As I see, you have your mailto in the body of your messages. Could
that be the possible cause?

Another reason for this suspicion of mine, is this: if I write something

software; if I write something about drugs, I get heaps of related
offerings, and, most painful, if I write about sex, I get an avalanche
of these... enlargement offerings. Honestly, I do not need any of these

this somehow to the reverend spammers...

Nope, just outlook which I have uninstalled.

If you have it uninstalled, then is possible that not all registry
entries related to it are deleted. It happens. You could check it out by
some registry cleaner.

Right click the desktop Internet Explorer icon and choose
 properties then programs

There doesn't seem to be any reference to an email program in IE
properties. Note below I'm using XP, maybe that's why?

...And, additionally, it's possible that XP is regenerating registry
entries at startup (especially if the components which are integrated
in OS, and OE is one of them, are removed from OS; MS like to do such
things, to feel better).

I have in mind, at the moment, two ways: XPlite_trial, which is free and
which can remove OE (and some other integrated components) quite
safely with all related reg. entries, so it will not bother you anymore.
I do that by default, with OE, when am installing XP. Then I run TB
without any problems.

Another way is using RegRun www.greatis.com, which is not free, but
has a trial period of 30 days, so you can do what you need. But it
relates more to tweaking and cleaning the Registry. (It has pretty
extensive Help 'tips and tricks' related to Win OSs, from 95 to XP.)

RegRun is a powerful PC security suite designed to work on Windows
95/98/ME/NT4/2000/XP platforms. This extraordinary software consists of
a number of utilities which work together to provide exceptional control
over programs that load from the registry, Windows system files,
downloads, or user selection. By closely tracking and managing all
processes, RegRun can effectively detect hidden trojan horses, viruses,
or other unauthorized programs. RegRun begins its activity before
startup other programs, analyzes the Windows registry and initialization
files, and warns the user if any changes occurred. The user can prevent
unwanted programs from loading, choose his own startup profile, or debug
the startup process using a sanitized startup of Windows.

RegRun is especially designed for the newest Microsoft Windows
platforms: Windows ME and Windows 2000/XP, and use their powerful
resources.

But XPlite trial is much smaller, safer and easier: www.litepc.com.

Re[2]: making folder views stick

2004-12-16 Thread ken green
Hello Andre,

Wednesday, December 15, 2004, 6:46:26 AM, you wrote:

You change the view mode. This change affects all folders using that
view mode or in the case of a global view mode all folders.

OK, I think I'm getting it now ;)

So a *global* view affect *all folders* regardless of an individual
folder's setting? If this is the case, it explains my confusion. I
was interpreting Global View mode more as a default view - the view
applied to all folders unless a specific view is applied to a folder.

So a change in global view mode changes *everything* eh?

And to get back to my folder's view mode, I would simply go back to
No view mode??

If all this is true, I'm a bit confused about Global views and their
usefulness. What is the purpose of the folder properties Column
settings.. Use view mode: selection? Those choices are global views.
Why would they be listed under a folder's property page if they don't
apply only to that folder?

Wait a minute perhaps there is activity in my brain after all... I
think I found my problem... My assumption was that selecting a folder
and then selecting a view from the view menu (global view) was the
same as selecting a view from the folder property page. I see now
that is not the case.

My problem in trying to figure this out was missing the essential
point that Peter posted:

I think the critical point is in the menu View -- Global View
Mode. This should be set to No View Mode, then the special folder
 views will stick.
---

I guess a better question would be what is the difference between the
View|View Threads By... option and the View|Global View... options?

The first lets you change the view mode you are currently using by
changing the threading model. The second lets you switch to a
different global view mode or none at all.

I understood this, but you articulated it in such a way that left no
doubt (changing the threading model) - thanks.

How do I quickly change the view/threading of one folder without
 affecting other folders?

In the folder properties choose folder specific settings. The more
practial approach would be to just reverse your change to the view
mode after you are finished, though.

Right. I was confusing changing the threading model with applying
views. I think that because Global view can be applied so easily and
so similar to threading models (Shift+Alt+n, Alt+n) I was getting
confused.

Thanks for you help. I know (or knew...) how to do this

 Hope that helps.

This helped a lot. I have TheBat working as I want. I sure missed
the helpful demeanor and responsiveness of this list while on TheBat
vacation...

thanks.

Now I just gotta go dig out my list welcome message out of Thunderbird
so I can find the list signature macro

Yeah, I assumed that. But the account isn´t a freemail service, it´s a

commercial spam filters would have a hard time figuring it out, as
common spanish has at least four times the amount of words as the full

OTR Afterthoughts

2004-12-16 Thread Munango-Keewati
I just remembered something I half-way considered, but decided I was
already so far along that it wouldn't make much sense: There's a
dealer offering 30,000 OTR shows on 35 DVDs for 89.95 (I think he
raised his price $10 for Christmas):

http://www.bookzap.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=YPC-6XCE

Same dealer has what he claims is a complete set of CBS Radio Mystery
Theater on 4 DVDs.

These dealers all snatch things up from the USENET groups mentioned
before, and the quality varies from great to miserable (just like it
did with tapes). I find the quality to be at least 90%-95% acceptable.

Are you up to date on MP3 format? You don't have to play these things
on the computer--there are a lot of CD and DVD players that are MP3
compatible, but they don't all have the needed features. Some won't
play low bitrate files, such as most OTR recordings. The only way to
be sure is to bring a disk to the store and try it out. Also, the Rio
Volt offers a true pause/resume feature, so that you can stop and
power off the player in the middle of an episode, then pick back up at
exactly that point. There's an art to getting the right player.

Here's a fairly complete listing of my OTR collection to date:

Gmane / subject on replies with counter / threading

2004-12-16 Thread Greg Strong
Hello TB Lists,

Just thought I'd let those of you who use counters in your subject with
a reply (i.e. Re[2]: GnuPG 1.4.0) that it messes up the threading in my
newsreader (i.e. Agent 1.93) when I pull from Gmane. Not that you really
care about my newsreader because I do NOT.

I figure you may care about the others who do use a newsreader to read
TB lists. I figure if it messes up Agent, then it is most likely to mess
up other threading with other non-Agent Newsreaders except for of course
those who use TB. If you do not care and like to play games on those
using newsreaders, then leave it like it is. With the volume down like
it is on TB lists, it may not much matter. :-)

email unless pop access is supported by the provider.

Some people think ThunderBird is good, but it can't work the impossible.

AGA Fine, but with what parameters (servers, settings, etc.)?

I don't use MSN so I wouldn't know. I assume you have an MSN account? If so
logon to it and read the FAQ's, Docs, instructions whatever, relative to your
account.

AGA Yes, MSN (the paying version) supposedly supports POP3/SMTP clients.

In that case try this and see what happens.

pop3.email.msn.com
and
smtp.email.msn.com

Sorry but you'll need to find out what user name and password to use yourself :)

That´s the funny thing. I DONT´T get spam to the mail I write with

TF Is it an easy task to switch the account filters to become

Yes, provided that you don't have common filters already. Just move
the account.srb file from your account directory to your mail
directory (normally that would be one directory up). Take care to
delete any existing account.srx (pld filter system) file from your
business account directory, otherwise that will be converted again to
account.srb (NFS)

TF - There are also some filters in the Personal account that I want
TF to maintain, so these filters need to be executed first before the
TF common filters kick in for the rest of the mails (that now stay in
TF the Personal Inbox).

I don't know what filters take precedence.

TF Furthermore, I want to reply from the Personal account if the original
TF was sent to the Personal account. How do I do that? Do I need to
TF assign a colour group first to use the %Account= macro?

Why use a colour group?
An %If statement testing whether your private address is included in
the addressees should work fine.

Before making major alterations a back-up session might be prudent.

Re: where do you keep your attachments?

2004-12-16 Thread Roman Katzer
Hi Marten,

Any suggestion on how to delete attachment files unassociated with any
  mail?
 In Options - Files Directories...
there's an option - delete attachments when message removed from trash -

Thanks, I should have mentioned that I have that checked. However, it
doesn't seem to work with messages that are directly deleted from a folder
without going to the trash bin first.
I have my spam folders set up so that deleting messages from them doesn't
move them to the trash folder but deletes them completely right away.

Re: where do you keep your attachments?

2004-12-16 Thread Roman Katzer
Hi Gerard,

I believe you can do a backup from within TB! and check store attachments
 with
msg. If you then delete your current installation and reinstall using
 your
backup all attachments without an email msg should be gone.

That could work. It's also quite cumbersome, though - not for regular
execution, I guess. If nothing else works, I will try this.

lookes for a word in the subject line and moves it to a folder if it
sees it...
