The U.S. is still what we (in the U.S.) like to call a "free country"; for example, the local base, which was the major staging point for the other Bush's war, was still open to civilians Tuesday afternoon, and hasn't been closed to civilians even once since; in fact there was a small airshow there this past weekend. > The only other time this country experienced a > sneak attack > was the attack on Pearl Harbor. This attack, as the one on Pearl Harbor, could have, and should have, been foretold. For example, a few weeks earlier bin Laden (and yes, I know we haven't proven yet it was he) had bragged about a forthcoming attack on the U.S., and newspapers covered weeks (perhaps months; my memory isn't that good when it comes to remembering time-frames) before, that he was training pilots on Boeing aircraft. > I am afraid we have "awaken[ed] a sleeping > giant". As we've all said this time as well. It remains to be seen what GWB would do about it. After being being terrorized for many years by an occupying army armed and funded by the US it is not difficult to understand some fanatics reacted in this disgusting way. I dount it was the reaction of most Palestinans though. Why should any sensibel person feel happy about thousands of innocent people being killed? What if the US carpet bombs Afghanistan in response? No doubt would many Americans dance in the street! But if the US takes any serious military action, no doubt there will be "collateral damage" ie innocent, civilian deaths. Dominic, Re: Your statement "American thinking can be dangerous." I say gently, lumping all Americans together as either bad or good is a mistake. My America is a highly diverse land, rich with many cultures that live together with surprisingly little friction. Here is my own "American" thinking. I volunteer as a tour guide at the U.S. Capitol building. My next shift is Saturday morning. I will be there. I will be there to honor freedom, not to promote "American" thinking. I will honor such people who worked for freedom as Constantion Brumedi, Thaddeus Kosciusko and George Washington. I list Washington last because he would have said "all men are equal, list our names in alphabetic order."
