RE: [ot_caving] Digital TV converters
Quinta, Glad to hear some feedback. I'm lucky. I currently live within 10 miles of my local stations. I use rabbit ears, but am told that's okay. Maybe I'll have better reception since I'm so close.Louise From: quinta@clearwire.netTo: ot@texascavers.comDate: Fri, 18 Apr 2008 18:34:04 -0500Subject: Re: [ot_caving] Digital TV converters I have a converter and have an indoor antena that is for the digital signal from Radio Shack. I can not get the shorter tower at all - it does not use quite as much power as the one right next to it. The one next to I can get when it is not windy but when it is I get nothing. The two in town will blink and scramble a lot when it is quite windy and they are less than 5 miles from me. I can watch the antenna strength go up and down on windy days. No it is not my antena as it is an indoor one. I do get quality but the broadcast seems to be bad with the towers wobble. Quinta

[ot_caving] Digital TV converters
We had a discussion a couple of months ago about digital TV converters. On a link from one of our local TV stations, I went to the Radio Shack site below and found some good information about them as well as a link to the Department of Commerce where you can order up to 2 coupons to defray the cost of the converters. In case you don't know: Congress created the TV Converter Box Coupon Program for households wishing to keep using their analog TV sets after February 17, 2009. The Program allows U.S. households to obtain up to two coupons, each worth $40, that can be applied toward the cost of eligible converter boxes. https://www.dtv2009.gov/ This is a really informative site for those who missed out on the discussion about antennas.

RE: Virtual Speleo-Campfire
David, Thanks for the inclusion and introduction. I couldn't figure out how but please delete the Z from Holt. I, like most, have definite opinions but will refrain from expressing them on certain topics. I'm not sure if I am automatically on the VSC but if not, add me. In planning a five day trip to Big Bend N. P. recently, Mary Kay Manning was most helpful in providing me with information on the river and the park in general. I had visited the park a half dozen times but did not know Mary Kay or that she was a park ranger. Last Friday I had the pleasure of meeting and speaking with her at the Panther Junction Headquarters. What a delightful and vivacious lady. Keep on moderating. For the time being, I am posting my opinionated stories to a select group of people. Most if not all of these people I met on Cavetex or are cavers I have met over the years. The purpose of project is to allow cavers to talk to one another on-line as if they were sitting around the camp-fire after a long day of caving. I would like to encourage a wide range of discussions, while at the same time walking a tight rope of not offending readers on the sensitive issues. Now I would like to introduce a few of the people on the list.: I will start with Mary Kay Manning since I have known her for 24 years. Mary Kay is a park ranger out at Big Bend. She has won several caver rope climbing contest. I have been caving with her in Precipicio and several trips to the caves in Langtry. Dave McClung. I met David in 1987. He is well known for making margaritas at TSA functions. I think he is temporarily stuck out east somewhere - like Florida? Bill Bentley. I think everyone knows Bill. He is the world's cyber-caving guru. Dr. Roger Moore is a prominent archealogist in Houston. Many of Houston's landmarks before being built had to first past his archeaological scrutiny. Dorothy Mladenka is the world's 3-D speleo-photography guru. Fritz Holtz. Fritz did some caving in Texas back in the 50's. He has been posting things on Cavetex for at least a year, and he has been active in the Houston Grotto for several years now. I strongly believe we should listen to the opinions of our elders. So his opinions are highly needed on this project. Jim McLane. Jim is one of the most highly opinionate people that I know, and for that very reason he needs to be part of this project. Jim has a lot of experience with technical things, and has travelled the world, especially my favorite part of it - the Sierra Madres. Preston Forsythe. Preston is a very active caver in Kentucky. I have caved with him in a river cave in southern Mexico. He and his wife Sherry are the birding gurus of the list. Kenny McGee. I met Kenny in 1989. He has an unbelieve artist skill with all kinds of media. He is a petroleum geolgist in Colorado. I have been caving with him in Precipicio. You have probably seen some of his artwork on the covers of some Texas cavers back in the early 90's, but most recently he has a hand-drawn portrait of Carl Kunath in the book 50 years. Wayne Hutchinson. Well, I don't really know Wayne yet. However, he has been one of the most active cavers in Houston for the past several years. He loves to go caving in the Guads. Bill Steele. I think everybody knows and highly respects Bill. He has several claims to fame. He wrote the exciting tale - Yochib - The River Cave. He has been very active in encouraging exploration of Honeycreek Cave. Bill is an executive officer in the Boy Scouts. Carol McGee. I once went caving with Carol at Precipico. She has been on the cover of several Texas Cavers. Carol is pre-occupied these days with taking car
[ot_caving] a skin-diving video in a Mexico cave
Some of you have been swimming in Mexico in a spring called "Media la Luna." Here is a very good video of some skin-divers poking around in the cave at the bottom of the spring. I don't know how many divers have died here? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jk3v8cIf5m4 Set the resolution to high if you have a fast connection. It doesn't look like they ever left the twilight zone, but still they didn't look prepared for an emergency. I highly recommend you take a dip in this spring if you are ever in the town of Rio Verde, San Luis Potosi. David Locklear

You can read more if you choose at: (an they misspelled Timpanogos) http://home.nps.gov/applications/digest/headline.cfm?type=PeopleNews&id=1482&urlarea=PeopleNews I love my dogs, single life, kayaking the rivers, and photography. You can see some of my photography at the links in my signature below. I still cave on a very limited basis. It hurts my sciatic nerve too much to bend and squat, etc, so I've been kayaking more than anything. That's it. Oh, and I'm also a "victim of circumstance", lol. Hi! This is the ezmlm program. I'm managing the campf...@texascavers.com mailing list. I'm working for my owner, who can be reached at campfire-ow...@texascavers.com. To confirm that you would like wo...@justfamily.org added to the campfire mailing list, please send an empty reply to this address: campfire-sc.1208533292.aenhnfienajidllgajij-wokka=justfamily@texascavers.com Usually, this happens when you just hit the "reply" button. If this does not work, simply copy the address and paste it into the "To:" field of a new message. This confirmation serves two purposes. First, it verifies that I am able to get mail through to you. Second, it protects you in case someone forges a subscription request in your name. Some mail programs are broken and cannot handle long addresses. If you cannot reply to this request, instead send a message to and put the entire address listed above into the "Subject:" line. --- Administrative commands for the campfire list --- I can handle administrative requests automatically. Re: Virtual Speleo-Campfire-Kentucky Caving
Hi All: Here is a KY caving story hot off the press as Mike Dyas and I went cave hunting in far western KY, yesterday. We searched the area of western Caldwell County between Farmerville and Fredonia, north of Crider. We spent considerable time talking to three different folks, one a very alert 86 yr old retired farmer, Mr. Patton, whose father had been a Spar miner. We talked about farming, droughts, spar mines and carbide lights for some time. Iron ore mining came into that area around 1890 and spar mining really went big time in the early 1940's as it was in demand as flux for the northern steel mills. But, soon Mexico spar, from south of Texas especially in the Big Bend area, flooded the market at a greatly reduced price and the Caldwell and Crittenden Counties' spar mines on the Tuffs, Claylick and other fault zones went out of business. Some of the mines were shaft mines hundreds of feet deep. Mr. Patton told us about a nearby road cut with an exposed spar vein 5 to 8 ft. wide. We searched for it but must have taken a wrong turn. Mr. Patton talked about the carbide lights and how you could take them apart and make them work again when they plugged up and how they would keep you warm. LEDs will never replace the old miner's light. He pointed us in the direction of a "new" cave on his extensive farm, which we named after the old friendly guy, Patton Cave. A crawl-in which Mr. Patton described as about 100 ft. long, almost standing and maybe 8-10 ft. wide in places, on the side of the wooded ridge in Renault Limestone, below the Bethel Sandstone The searchThe slope was very rocky and since the entrance was a crawl, we simply missed it. We searched for 2-3 hours but could not find it. So it goes. A second retired guy also told us about the same cave, so no doubt Patton Cave is there, somewhere?.. Visited two springs. Ice Cave Spring, interesting and Good Spring Church, not much. We ate lunch, again, at the LaRue BBQ place in Fredonia. A good tenderloin plate. Last week we had the BBQ plate and it was excellent, better than Roy's in Russellville. Mike Dyas heads back to DC on Sat. Next event is the KSS meeting and paper caving session on April 26. Then, the MaCa Restoration is the first weekend of May. The second weekend of May is a CRF work weekend on the property at Hamilton Valley. Chris Anderson has a very interesting project going on in Crittenden Co. near Frances and not far from Mexico. A decade ago or so a large Air Force place crashed near Mexico, KY. The plane was on it's way from Texas to NY. When the pilot was rescued and told he was at Mexico, the pilot said he thought he was off course, but not that far off! That is a LaRue restaurant story. We are planting new shrubs and raspberries today. Virtual Speleo-Campfire
This private list is now officially called The Virtual Speleo-Campfire http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/David_Rossall/fire_1.gif About this list: This is sort of an introduction to the members of this list. Carol is pre-occupied these days with taking care of her elderly mother. Gil Ediger. I met Gil in 1985 at TCR. He was ram-rodding the show back in those days. I still remember his famous speech that day. "If the younger members of the TSA do not step up soon and start volunteering, we are going to find ourselves without leadership."( or something to that effect ) Gil may be even more opinionated than Jim. That is a tough call.I think Gil drives a train up north somewhere now. Right? Alex Sproul. Alex is very well known on the national caving scene. He knows more about caving gear than just about any caver on earth. He is retired from operating a speleo-business called "Inner Mountain Outfitters," which is still the best place in the world to buy your caving gear. Charles Fromen. I have mentioned before that I love the Sierra Madres. Well, Charles knows more about the Sierra Madres than anybody - even the Huastecas that live there. He has several claims to fame. He discovered the longest dry cave in Mexico. He may be the oldest caver to ever do Precipicio. His son Carl Phillip is the youngest caver to ever do Precipicio. And Carl Phillip has won numerous rope climbing contest. Charles has a beautiful beach house just north of Acapulco in what once was a quaint little village called Zihuantenajo, but is now a major tourist attraction. Dale Barnard has been an active caver in the Austin area for something like 20 years. He recently married another well-known caver Denise Prendergast. Dale plays the acoustic guitar and has performed at several TCR's. I will have to d

[Texascavers] 2007 NSS Speleo Digest Editor Wanted
2007 NSS Speleo Digest Editor Wanted By: Scott Fee (Birmingham, Alabama) scott...@bellsouth.net The Speleo Digest is the one of the most popular books the NSS publishes, and certainly the most unusual. You've probably got at least one on your bookshelf. (If you don?t, then why not?) The Speleo Digest showcases the best in caving articles, artwork, humor, prose and cartoons from an entire year's worth of grotto newsletters. This is by far the best way for you to keep up with developments in caving around the nation and even the globe. But.we've come to a standstill. I'm looking for an editor for the 2007 Speleo Digest. Yes, it is a bunch of work, and producing an issue will occupy your time for many months -- BUT it is a fun and interesting project (I know -- I've worked on or edited at least five issues) and not to mention you will get in touch with a lot of cavers around the country, and your name will be listed as Editor on the inside cover of a 500+ page book. Naturally, you could do it yourself, but it would make a great grotto project with three or four dedicated members helping you out. Each Editor is responsible for selecting articles and other items to be included in the Speleo Digest, gathering the articles, graphics, photos, and what not, and producing the books final manuscript. The Series Editor (that would be me) is there to help and guide you as well as overseeing publishing of the book once the manuscript has been completed. Of course you may delegate tasks to a committee of assistants. Interested? Got the time, a computer, and an aptitude for desktop publishing? Willing to round up and lead a production team utilizing some of your caver buddies? Please contact me! Scott Fee scottfee at bellsouth dot net The NSS needs your help!
