Re: [U2] Universe web connectivity
Hi If you want a simple way to develop, check out [AD] mvScript [/AD]. Otherwise, UO.Net is easy to use but you will need to handle the concurrency issues brought about by a move to a stateless environment: decide how you are going to use optimistic locking and merging, and how to handle existing subroutines that expect common block entries, user based lists etc. That's true whatever you use for your development. Note; If you are using UO.Net or UOJ for web development you need to have connection pooled licences. Check out the text on your licence agreement: anything else other than connect-on-demand is a breach (mvScript supports both). Maybe Rocket will be more reasonable about this: personally I think the cost of purchasing connection pools is unjustifiable in this market. For the best results, RedBack/WebDE is scalable, fast and a very good model. It is also mature (at least the RedBack part is) and has powered many websites very successfully. Either that or UO.Net will be good, once you have mastered the client langauge of your choice. ASP.Net has the advantage of being reasonably simple, well documented with lots of blogs/examples etc on the internet. But if you're handling lots of multivalued entries their data grid is just appalling: expect to spend money on good components. And don't get the Microsoft self paced materials - they are really, really terrible. I've been working with Silverlight, and it's an uphill struggle to get anything working - not that it is hugely difficult, just it takes sooo long to achieve anything. Fine if you have large dedicated team of developers and designers, but that doesn't sound like the situation here :) Brian On 23 September 2009 at 23:06 Matthew Day wrote: > Hi, > > We currently have a system with a VB6 front end and use Universe for the > database and business logic. Re: [U2] Universe web connectivity
Matt, [ad] We have a complete solution that does not require you to build any Web tools yourself. Our solution runs under open source Apache Tomcat and uses UniObjects for Java (UOJ) to talk to the Universe or Unidata. Jabsorb.org, json-rpc.org, log4j, Quartz and numerous Java libraries to handle the AJAX transport between Universe and the Web are other open source we use. You can use any browser such as IE, Firefox, Safari, or Chrome. U2WebLink, our middleware, has replication technology which is very import for our Web clients. U2WebLink can handle replication between a Publisher and multiple Subscribers whether one is Universe and the other is Unidata. This replication does not require you to change or configure you database any differently. You just have to wrapper your writes and deletes with a call to our subroutine that you want replicated. Our subroutines have this capability already built-in. Scalability is not an issue. We have sites doing between 100 transactions to 15,000 per hour. We do not require you to use IBM connection pooling since we handle this through UOJ and our connection manager. Our open source logger can create a lot of detail login information which is not the case with standard UOJ. We have a built in subroutines to do the equivalent of "CRT Statements" to a log programmer by programmer. This is very helpful in debugging basic subroutines for the Web. Our Eclipse based tool called XLr8Developer that allows you to build your web forms. We have XLr8Object Editor that allows you to build the objects to talk with the web. We allow, through our JavaScript API, to call any UniBasic subroutine that you already have on your system. These all work with version control systems such as CVS, Subversion, Preforce or Git. We have spoken at length with PRC and can interface with their version control system as well. Probably the hardest feature to quantify is that we expect you to custom many things we produce such as HTML or JavaScript. So, we have many ways that allows you the create the forms that more match your business without a lot of fuss. We have hooks to call any routine through out the JavaScript that you may need to do something we have not thought of. We have over 700 forms running applications that we own such at Customer Resource Management, Distribution, Accounting, Warehousing, Moving and Storage, Food Service Dispatch, Broker Dispatch, Alpaca Herd Management, Payroll and Document Management all written with these tools. We are currently writing a interface to an open source report writer that should be available next quarter. Re: [U2] Universe web connectivity
Matthew, First, I want to mention that there are a number of writeups already on the PickWiki website: http://www.pickwiki.com/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?CreateWebInterfaces We use u2pipe for our customers' websites. We don't need to install UniObjects on hosted webservers (many hosting services don't let you install them.) Currently, the websites are written in either ASP, PHP, or ColdFusion. The upside is that it doesn't tie up a U2 license for the duration of a user session, and that's its downside too -- it's possible for telnet users to eat up all the available licenses. You say you're "looking to develop a web solution for our product" -- what kind of product is it? Will you host the website for all your customers, or will they each have their own deployment? Will it be a heavy traffic site, or low traffic geared towards internal employees or selected customers? Are you looking to create the next FaceBook? rex ___ U2-Users mailing list U2-Users@listserver.u2ug.org http://listserver.u2ug.org/mailman/listinfo/u2-users

On Unidata, you can start with field 3 in the CTLGTB file. As long as you stick with the CATALOG verb and don't edit any of the records in CTLGTB, that should work. For example, it's possible to manually copy the object into the system CTLG directory. If that happens, you can still call the program from Unidata, but it will not show up in the CTLGTB file. >>> "Brutzman, Bill" 9/23/2009 2:10 PM >>> Is there a way to programatically... Re: [U2] Software Test
Hi, we used an automated tester called Testpro a few years ago. You can set it up to run through your system using data in a file as input or you can load the script with the data. It works by recording what you do and capturing the screen output. It works..BUT it takes longer to maintain the scripts then do the changes. The overhead proved to much, we had about 30 developers at the time. We produce test plans for everything we do. It is the standard of the test plan and the quality of the person doing the testing that counts. Good luck Les Sherlock Hewkin Project Manager Group Financial Systems I.T. A successful test is one that *finds* errors in the code. If no errors are found, then either there aren't any (and that's highly unlikely,) or the tests aren't good enough to trigger the problems. Ideally, you get a hold of someone who knows the application very well, and has a demonic streak. Have that person follow the strategy Ken Hall suggested in the earlier post. If they are immediately successful (i.e. finding errors,) track the rate of error discovery. When the rate falls below, say one per day, you might be at a cutoff point. Get a second opinion from another destructive expert if you can, particularly if the first fails (i.e. finds no errors.) Basically, nothing beats an application expert bent on breaking the software for finding bugs the fastest. What your boss is proposing to do is to kill several hundred bacteria by boiling the ocean. Managing test case coverage for a typical application is a huge task.
