Hey, Maybe we could take all of us out of work Pickies and have them teach
college class in pick so at least there would be programmers for Datatel and
the college book stores. The we would have the students buying Pick Books for
classes and get the volume up in the book sales

Still, good ideas, but how many would like
their Pocket Guide to be the size of a normal
book, versus 3-3/4"x6"?

If that's what you want, look for the
"Desk Reference Edition" of the Pick
Pocket Guide, which we produced as
part of "The Pick Library" from Tab
Books, Inc, a division of McMillan.

It has the same content as the Fifth
Edition of the spiral bound one.

Here's our Pick Pubs Database entry:

Re: [U2] 2 servers - how do I point to a VOC on another server?

2010-03-30 Thread Chris Austin

Thanks for the reply John. Is there anything we need to setup to achieve an
NFS mount? The only configuration change we made thus far was setting ALLOWNFS
to 1.

An example of a VOC entry on the OLD SERVER is as follows:

LIVE>CT VOC TEST_HARNESS2

 TEST_HARNESS2
0001 V *PJC* ELEVATED FROM CHRIS PROJECT 2487 ON 11:25:11 01 SEP 2009
0002 ..\CHRISSYS\LFUTILS.O/TEST_HARNESS2
0003 B
0004 BNP
0005
0006 PICK.FORMAT
0007 S²N²P²I²A²E²H
0008 NO.WARN²NOPAGE²LPTR²KEEP.COMMON²²TRAP²HDR-SUPP
0009 ..\CHRISSYS\LFUTILS.O

I'm confused what 'mnt' would be in your notes? If you could clarify what our
VOC should
be I can then test this out. I really appreciate the help! Thanks.

2010-03-30 Thread John Hester
If I'm understanding correctly, you want to run a program that
physically resides on the old server against data on the new server. I
haven't done this myself, but I don't see any reason why you couldn't
run or catalog a program that sits on an NFS mount from another server.
The VOC for the remote file might look something like this:

BP.OLD

001: F
002: /mnt/nfs/old_server/BP
003: /mnt/nfs/old_server/D_BP

and you'll also need the corresponding object file:

BP.OLD.O

001: F
002: /mnt/nfs/old_server/BP.O
003: /mnt/nfs/old_server/D_BP.O

Then you should be able to RUN BP.OLD PROGRAMNAME or CATALOG BP.OLD
PROGRAMNAME to have its VOC entry replace one that points to the local
copy of the program.

Re: [U2] Regex searching UD files

2010-03-30 Thread Jacques G.
I found a way to do it with compiled dictionary elements (on UV).

1- I create a dictionnary element called EGREP.ARGS that always returns "X":
0001: I
0002: "X"[1,1]
0003:
0004: EGREP.ARGS
0005: 1L
0006: M

2- I create a dictionnary element called "EGREP" which is defined like this:
0001: I
0002: SUBR("DICT.EGREP",@RECORD,@ID,@SENTENCE)
0003:
0004: EGREP
0005: 40L
0006: M

DICT.EGREP is defined like this:
SUBROUTINE DICT.EGREP(OUT,RECORD,ID,SENTENCE)
COM /WORKF/WORKF
IF FILEINFO(WORKF,0) = 0 THEN
   OPEN "", "WORK.FILE" TO WORKF ELSE STOP 201, "WORK.FILE" ;* A type 19 file
on Universe (pointer to a directory)
END
STATUS STAT FROM WORKF ELSE STOP
PATH = STAT<27>

*--- Extract the arguments for egrep from cmd line ---*
ARG.PFX   = "EGREP.ARGS NE "
POS.EGREP = INDEX(SENTENCE,ARG.PFX,1) + LEN(ARG.PFX) + 1
EGREP.ARG = SENTENCE[POS.EGREP,LEN(SENTENCE)-POS.EGREP+1]
EGREP.ARG = EGREP.ARG[1,INDEX(EGREP.ARG,"EGREP",1)-1]
EGREP.ARG = CONVERT('"','',EGREP.ARG)

TMP.KEY = "egrep.tmp" ;* Using temporary key not ID to avoid problems (ei:
spaces, parentheses etc)
WRITE RECORD ON WORKF, TMP.KEY ;* Write rec to temp. file

CMD = "cd ":PATH:" ; egrep ":EGREP.ARG:" ":TMP.KEY
EXECUTE "SH -c ":QUOTE(CMD) CAPTURING OUT
DELETE WORKF, TMP.KEY;* Remove record
RETURN

This is how I do my search:

LIST MYFILE WITH EGREP.ARGS NE "-in blahblah" EGREP

(This will do the equivalent of egrep -in blahblahblah MYFILE if MYFILE was a
type 19 file)

This method writes only one record at a time and deletes it so while it is slow
(1 write + a sh executed per record), it will work with limited space available
and it uses the Unix egrep command. The arguments to the egrep command are
parsed from the sentence between EGREP.ARGS NE and EGREP.

However, if it's size non-impactive, what I would normally do is copy

Subject: [U2] Regex searching UD files

I've written a small utility to be able to run egrep on a UD file (not
UD directory), however its implementation is not ideal.

Essentially, I select the file I'm searching, writing each record one at
a time to a temp UNIX file and running egrep on it as follows

!egrep -q -f MyTempRegexFile MyTempRecordFile ; echo $?

Where MyTempRegexFile is a file containing the desired regex pattern
stored earlier and MyTempRecordFile is a file name unique to each user.

My problem with it is that I have to do a READ on each record, followed
by a WRITE then have egrep read it in as well. That's a lot of seemingly
unneeded disk IO if I could only stream the record to egrep without have
to do a WRITE after the READ.

Any ideas? I feel I'm missing something quite obvious.

Regards,

Dan

You can run anything in a virtual machine :)
I run ADDS PC/OS in a virtual machine on mac.
I've run PCVerse under OS/2 in a virtual machine on the mac. (Anyone remember
PCVerse? IBM shipped it on the samples application disk with OS/2 Warp 4).

It looks like the only *native* pick implementations for mac are Cache and QM.

Are there are native implementations of a Pick system on Macs?

As Henry and Allen have both said, our OpenQM product runs on Macs. We have
installations ranging from MacBook Pro laptops right through to Mac Servers.

Since your query is raised on the U2 list, it is fair to say that, of course,
QM is not U2 however migration should be very easy if you want to go down this

Probably any further discussion should be via the OpenQM Google group rather

Re: [U2] Pick on Mac

2010-03-30 Thread Lee Burstein

Cache from InterSystems runs natively on the Mac.

Are there are native implementations of a Pick system on Macs? Or are all
Mac connections just terminal emulators into a Windows/Unix system?

I know there is or used to be an emulator by Carnation that rode on a Mac.
But have all such implementations been to have it talk with a Pick system
living on a Windows or Unix box?

Does Universe have any sites where users are connecting using Macs as their
PC?

Re: [U2] CPU Spikes to 100%

2010-03-30 Thread djordan
I have 2 sites running on vmware virtualisation for Windows 2003 and a
HyperV with Windows 2008 66 bit and have had no problems. I did have an
issue of a .Net application with an old release of UniObjects .Net that
caused the CPU to spike 100%. I recompiled the app with the new version and
this problem went away. I do have a problem with the Telnet sessions
freezing after a time of no activity on the VMware sites, but this has not
caused a CPU issue.

Re: [U2] Pick on Mac

2010-03-30 Thread David Jordan
The MAC OS is a version of openBSD I believe, and Universe did have a BSD
implementation in the past. If Rocket had a business case for doing it, I
suspect Rocket could put UniVerse on Mac.

Re: [U2] Pick Pocket Guide [not-secure]

2010-03-30 Thread Clive Hills
I have a copy of the Reality Pocket Guide (brown cover) which I think was
for 4.2 or some such.
