RE: [U2] Updating UV/UD PE

2008-08-28 Thread Colin Alfke
I don't think you can get an activation key for the PE versions. IIRC it's
noted in the download somewhere.

The easiest way to upgrade is to:

-download the new version, double check the ending date - there was a
problem with a new copy not being up before the last one expired, plus there
have been some issues with some recent releases
-install overtop of your existing release

I need to upgrade my PE versions. I let them lapse and believe
they're both dead simply because of a temp license timeout. If
that's not supposed to happen, please let me know so I can do
some better diagnostics. ;)

If I download the latest releases, what's the easiest way to
upgrade?
- Complete uninstall/reboot/reinstall of everything?
- Install on top of prior releases (with backups beforehand of
course)?
- Or is there a way to just get a new activation key for the next
couple months?

Does that mean that the failure of the platforms to initialize
may have to do with something other than a PE license expiration?
Rather, I'm understanding that a full installation is required to
get the software back working, and that there is no key-only
re-activation process. Is that correct?

Well bud, that's not mighty encouraging. Since the versions I'm
on work fine, I might be inclined to just re-install what I
already have, if I could, but this whole process seems to be a
waste of time.

> -install overtop of your existing release

What I'm getting from this is that:
1) no uninstall is required,
2) files and registry entries will not be left unreferenced and
services will be properly unregistered and re-registered,
3) existing accounts will be visible to an update environment.

I'm sorry but I don't have that much faith in the U2 installers
so some confirmation would really help. I'll check upgrade docs
again but for some reason these docs always seem to
over-complicate simple processes, or under-emphasize some
critical concern (like "of course you need to completely
uninstall and re-install the UniSDK and all of your client
processes after you've installed this new release...").

2008-08-29 Thread Anthony Youngman
IBM are doing you a favour letting you have PE (yes, I know it's in their
interests too :-)

One of the conditions of letting you have it is that you stay bleeding edge.

The way they enforce that (and also keep track of who's using PE) is to
date-bomb the PE version. So re-installing won't work. What you need to do is
reset your system date back to when it last worked, and then it'll probably
work fine ...

Anyway, what's wrong with having to do a full re-install? I don't know, but
hopefully it does an upgrade install (it should), and if it doesn't it helps
you make certain your app install procedures are clean and easy :-)

Cheers,
Wol

I think that's correct. It's likely they expired and (unlike the pay
versions) I don't think you can "re-activate".

I think the last ones were the first PE version with an expiry date and they
just didn't get a new version up before the last expired. I think it went up
pretty quick once they realized. I see that the new 7.2 version of UD is
available for PE so you'll be OK. Just trying to give you a pro-active
heads-up as I hadn't checked the PE version for a while.

Right. We used to recommend to uninstall first - until one client complained
that it removed all of their data folders as well - we're pretty sure it was
a user error as we've done it lots without problems. As for point 2 - I
won't say it's flawless - more "better than average."

Never hit anything like this. Note that "professionally" I only had one site
start to use any of the UniSDK so I don't have a lot of experience going
through multiple upgrades - although playing with it at home hasn't been a
problem.

Although, you could send me the VM and I could play with it for a while...

I know you think that c:\ibm is nasty, but be aware that (I think it's UV

had some weird problems installing in Program Files, the space means various
services fail to start.

Ignoring the technical focus for a minute: Doesn't anyone there
know how to use short paths? Can't someone at IBM modify the
installation to prevent the use of long pathnames if the product
can't handle them? This is installation code for an IBM product,
not a hack by some kid who writes Java code to work his way
through school. Why do people tolerate an issue like this from
one release to another? This is UD v7 and UV v10 in 2008, not v1
in 1995 (pre-long-path).

I know at least one U2 administrator here that has site protocols
about putting data into the C drive. I can see a lot of sites
not accepting defaults and just needing to know that there are
issues with spaces in paths.

I keep all data in a separate \Data path anyway, separating
databases from the software that runs under them. I can
understand if the U2 DBMS' don't like spaces in paths to data,
but there's no excuse for such restrictions on the OS code and
admin utilities.

I'm not quite sure what you're getting at here, but never mind ... Don't
forget UV comes from a heritage where space was an illegal character in
file names. (And it still is, for quite a lot of other programs that run
under Windows, too. Spaces cause me grief, even in Windows itself!)

Where I work, we actually put both UV itself, and the data, on the D:
drive by default (we don't put the accounts under \ibm\uv, which is
where they go by default aiui).

I keep all data in a separate \Data path anyway, separating
databases from the software that runs under them. I can

Those restrictions make cross-platform implementation a bit easier.

Note that MS have reportedly stripped the spaces from default pathnames
in Vista or Windows 7 (I can't say for certain - I have yet to have the
pleasure of fighting either of those OS's :-)

Ever wondered why "\" is the path delimiter in Windows? Because when Gary
