[ubuntu-art] Iconic Splash Screen- Intrepid Ibex

2008-05-03 Thread Pitr T.
The Hardy splash screen / icon was amazing, and I think something like it
needs to be done for Intrepid. There's a wiki on this now, at a subpage of
http://www.ubuntu.com/wiki/Artwork/Incoming/Intrepid. If another splash can
be done well, it will definitely help the art projects to continue around a
more centralized theme.

I think it may be worth discussing a theme which takes advantage of the
compositing effects available to us. With Metacity's compositing engine
coming along nicely, it could be worth considering a near future where
just about everyone has the fancy effects. I posted a while ago about my
current desktop theme with no window borders, which is very striking and
possible entirely thanks to the use of drop shadows to divide windows.
It saves space and looks great not by adding more, but by removing the
apparent need for more. The borders exist to divide windows, but with
the compositing effects doing that now, they are completely redundant!
(Not that I think it is sane in the slightest for the window manager to
handle drop shadows; that job should be left up to the individual
themes).

Besides the fancy effects stuff, I think the Metacity theme is a very
important detail which could do with a lot more attention than people
give it. One problem with the window themes is that they have no
consistency with the contents of a window, such that a black window (for
example) still has a big light grey border and an orange title bar.
Turns out the nicest way to fix that is to remove the offending
assumptive details altogether.

A good theme makes the applications look good and clear, not itself.
That's relatively easy with a GTK theme, since GTK generally /is/ the
visible part of an application, but it is not as easy with the Metacity
theme.

Okay, that's my nonsensical rambling for today...

Bye,
-Dylan

This is the goal of the Gre-Manity theme (now on the wiki). A new icon set
and a new color scheme could go a long way. More help is needed in icon
development. I like how many themes are being developed independently of
each other; let's keep working on this.

from GNOME-Look or the wiki. It really take no creativity to piece a
couple of things together like some of the examples so far.

Fran?ois, that theme is really nice! The black and white monocoloured icons
work great on the top menu bar. My only suggestion would be to not make
Applications, Places and System fonts in bold.

I'm starting to think we can make a theme that pleases both people who like
dark and light themes by mixing the Ubuntu Orange colours with dark menu
bars which is both attractive and easy on the eye.

Hi Hylke,

I didn't do this thing with Vista in mind at all. I just thought about the
orange/black palette that was requested for Hardy - and that's still the
case for Intrepid, I think. The gradient is more apple-like than Vistaish
(it has not this "shiny" glass effect), but in black. Please just keep in
mind that those elements should be, IMO, color neutral, i.e. gray (light or
dark, see OSX Tiger and Leopard) or black. Making a shiny orange taskbar
would just make us all blind - and another color combined with the Ubuntu
orange would just make us puke all around our desk.

The wallpaper is this one: http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/33466586/
Many other (good) vector wallpapers can be found here:
http://news.deviantart.com/article/28138/
However, I didn't find it in a higher resolution. You should ask the author
- by the way, if its response is positive, I'm interested too. Also, if you
want to submit this image for the next release, you should inform yourself
about the license it uses, and maybe ask the author to choose one which
would allow us to redistribute it.

Cheers,

Well, I would say a few things first:
The energy that is required to generate a new theme engine is pretty
high. Before you start I would be sure that the style you are aiming
for is not available from one of the newer engines (esp. Murrine -
which is very configurable and also supports transparency as that
theme requires).
Before doing ANY work on a new style like that, get some more design
done - the single image isn't really enough to know how the theme is
going to hold together, what is going to make it *work* as a theme.
This sort of area is where Troy's advice is great, and there are
certainly many others on the list more able to comment on design
theory than me!

Techincally, it looks like you could get a lot of what you want with
Murrine and a custom metacity. If you know a lot of C and have some
time to get to grips with a theme engine, tweaking it as you like
should be possible: but like I say - be sure you know where you're
going... Get a .gtkrc that gets a theme engine as close as possible
to your desired look before you start hacking. Then do some review of
the design before you go too far: is it usable? Does it feel nice to
use? Etc. Then you can move forward into making the engine do a bit
more.

On the other hand, braver people than I would use the pixbuff engine:
It allows you to define all the elements of a theme with images.
Performance isn't crazy-good, but it isn't crazy-bad either. To my
knowledge, pixbuf isn't doing alpha yet (on the other hand - you could
well find during your usability testing that alpha isn't the way you
really want to take things.). With pixbuff the key is to look at an
existing theme, and build your one from there.

As far as usability testing goes, pixbuf can be a good way to beta
test styles: A single GTKRC can use multiple engines (this isn't
advisable in a final theme, as you take a memory hit...) so if, for
example, clearlooks did everything except the scrollbars the way you
wanted you could test JUST the scrollbars using images and the pixbuff
engine, using clearlooks for all else. Then, if you really like it,
patch clearlooks to get what you want. If your code is good and your
change is optional, you might be able to get your code upstream to be
able to avoid having to maintain a branch...

That's a bit of a theming braindump - hope it makes sense.

You can use gtkperf to benchmark themes (in a fairly basic way)

Happy design.

I don't like the black very much (why do we need to follow Windows in
everything? first the gloss, now the Vistaish black, even the gradient
is almost the same).

However, I LOVE the wallpaper, it gives the feeling of freedom to me and
that's what Linux is all about! :)

Maybe we can make more variations of it, with different landscapes and

Hi François,

Unfortunately I have to admit that I don't have a slightest idea of how
to code a theme but I do know to code in C so I can learn it over time.
Is there a theme we will base New Wave or we will have to make a new
theme engine like clearlooks, murrine and aurora? I think the theme we
are trying to make is very close to clearlooks so we can make a fork and
implement our own theme style (the buttons shape & color, the other
widgets).

I would like to ask the ppl from the list if they could help with the
decision on the engine problem (esp. Troy, and Who).

Like you François I prefer to do the drawing (mostly on paper :)) but
in the Linux world we don't have much of a choice, do we?

Thanks,
Anton

You have _no_ idea how refreshing it is to _finally_ be reading this on
this list.

Honestly, when sabdfl was trying for glossy hell back on Dapper / Edgy,
it was done like dinner.

With that subject however, comes a warning. One cannot simply gut out a
style and replace it with a vacuum. With the absence of a dated style,
a replacement is required. This is by no means an easy task.

Just because the stylings of air flow fins and sharp points were a
bygone style of the 1960s, auto manufacturers didn't simply start
producing cardboard boxes.

Glossy gradient highlights and that nasty inverted reflection look are
most certainly chasing ghosts of the past. What is a contemporary
visual styling that will not only replace it, but also lend the same
degree of character? Perhaps external art and design collections might
highlight an interesting perspective? Blanket, Candy, Font Magazine,
Royal and a few other online magazines could potentially open up an idea
or two...

this is pretty good. i like the relative lack of colour variance in the
wireless and volume applets. that they share the same colour as the time
groups them all together in the "information" part of the panel. the
subtle panel shading is good and works well when seen across several
colours (the grey and then the power button, then the logo).

i think the nectarine-red in the alert icon is a bit weak, off somehow.
i don't like the choice of folder icon theme but it's a welcome change
from the caramel bonbons we have currently ;)

the black icons in the last screenshot are an interesting direction.

it's refreshing to see the titlebar removed when the window is inactive.
this would greatly simplify the visual field when many windows are in
open and avoids the need to change the colour of the title-bar when
inactive.

i would perhaps choose a thicker border on the windows however, as the
definition between windows may not be sufficient when many are stacked
ontop of each other - especially on systems without the true
transparency that compiz brings..
