[ubuntu-art] Hello everyone!
Ubuntu Artwork Team, Hey everyone! I've come to introduce myself. My name is T.J. Barber, and I am a Christian, web designer, budding artist, photographer, music lover, and Linux user since 2005. I first used Ubuntu in 2007, and I really believe that it's the Linux of the future (not including Android). I think I've used every version of Ubuntu since 7.10. I have Ubuntu 11.10 on both my desktop and laptop. I've also been inspired by the beautiful work of PIXAR Animation Studios, their spirit of creativity, and the way they convey emotion by using a math-crunching computer. But in the end it's the best art I've ever seen, and the only art I really can laugh or cry with. I've always been touched by that, and it's something I aspire to. Though I may never make someone cry with a photo, I know I can make them laugh or just make their day better overall. And I also see Apple doing a similar thing, but the freedom loving side of me comes out when using Apple hardware and software. Another thing that affects me deeply is community, and though you do have a community of Apple fanboys they're not creating and supporting together in the way Ubuntu does (I love Jono Bacon's book *The Art of Community, *if you couldn't tell!). Sorry to go long, but I really love both art and Ubuntu and want to see these loves merged. I'd really like to be part of the Ubuntu Art Team. I enjoy taking photos and I'm working on learning Inkscape. There's a lot to learn about graphic design, and even more to explore with photography. Hope to talk to you all soon! I'm on Launchpad ( https://launchpad.net/~tjbarber09) and Twitter ( http://www.twitter.com/tjbarber09). =) -- -- God bless! T.J. [ubuntu-art] Hello!
Hi, I would like to contribute to the Ubuntu Artwork Team. I've been an avid user of free / open source software since 1994 - using Linux exclusively as my desktop since 1996. I've been a sysadmin for a couple of ISP's and somehow survived the .com crash, and am currently a business analyst for a big company. I do some work with user interaction, design, and a limited amount of graphic design. I have enjoyed the benefits of open source / free software for so long, and always wished that I could contribute back, but I cannot do much with code (apart from some non compiled languages). Since I want to do more in the way of graphic design, and just design in general, I thought this would be a great way where I can learn from others, grow my skills, and contribute back to a broad community that I have benefited from for so many years. -Chad -- ubuntu-art mailing list ubuntu-art@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-art

Anyone? Well, lets start with some information :) You all should have a look at our wiki, if you haven't already: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork The next release is scheduled for the 29th of October, so it doesn't make any sense to start something new for it. It's very early in the game for the next cycle, 10.04: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LucidReleaseSchedule It's very important that you understand that the community does not create the default artwork. There have been exceptions regarding the wallpaper, but I wouldn't count on that happening again. There's a design team at Canonical. Friendly and at least in part very approachable people, but it still is a bit like a black box. Often all we get to see are the final decisions at the very end of the process, the reasoning, the strategy remaining somewhat of a mystery. So what do we get to do? Create and package themes. It's best I leave it to those actually involved to tell you more about it. Create wallpapers. https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/Karmic/Backgrounds For earlier cycles, everyone who felt like it would add a separate page to the wiki for their wallpapers. This time it was tightly organized, only to run into a nasty issue with wiki engine: If you request too many items in quick succession, the wiki refuses to deliver. It's called a surge protection. That means that on pages with many images, not all will load. If you then try to view additional images, the wiki answers with a warning to slow down. It's a reported issue. Entirely new in this cycle was using Flickr: http://www.flickr.com/groups/ubuntu-artwork/pool/ A selection from these went into http://www.flickr.com/groups/1188...@n24/ My recommendation: Do not even allow wallpaper submissions on the wiki for the Lucid Lynx cycle. The wiki just doesn't work for this and it's not fair to contributors to let them add stuff that will be ignored, anyway. Plus any wallpaper showing up there would encourage others to add theirs. Instead point to Flickr (if no one can offer an alternative). So far I got no feedback on this at all. In case some of you would be interested in creating a web-service: having a site where you can upload wallpapers (and similar artwork), with automatic thumbnail generation, nested comments and maybe even versioning would rock ;) The countdown banners have been mentioned. https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Website/KarmicCountdownBanners It will be a while until the call for 10.04 banners ... There's an entirely community driven and well organized project working on an icon theme: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/BreatheIconSet Note that there are many open-source projects that could benefit from some help with artwork, interaction design and obviously programming, if you don't find something here. -- Thorsten Wilms thorwil's design for free software: http://thorwil.wordpress.com/ -- ubuntu-art mailing list ubuntu-art@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-art -- ubuntu-art mailing list ubuntu-art@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-art

for example: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/Karmic/Boot?action=AttachFiledo=gettarget=mrdoob_ubuntu910_boot06_01.png https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/Karmic/Boot?action=AttachFiledo=gettarget=mrdoob_ubuntu910_boot06_01.pngit is good and ubuntu mixed some estrange design with it, please leave it as it is, just like that, and do not make a bar go over another, just make it work as a loading bar, as u see in the picture, i mean leave it as you can see it in that screenshot this one is great to boot: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/Karmic/Boot?action=AttachFiledo=gettarget=mrdoob_ubuntu910_boot03_01_thumb.png this one is even better: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/Karmic/Boot?action=AttachFiledo=viewtarget=mrdoob_ubuntu910_boot04_01.png https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/Karmic/Boot?action=AttachFiledo=viewtarget=mrdoob_ubuntu910_boot04_02.png and this one is simpler but it looks great with the the new boot sequence that i talked about before: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/Karmic/Boot?action=AttachFiledo=viewtarget=mrdoob_ubuntu910_boot05_01.png Thanks to read -- ubuntu-art mailing list ubuntu-art@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-art

I don't know your technique but whatever you did for this: http://www.flickr.com/photos/hellocatfood/3745753569/ Would make some excellent icons IMO. Why thank you :-) It's a fairly simple process, just invovles a few different filters. Over time I'll get to creating a few icons and then move onto a new icon set, but first I need to get used to the one canvas method! Also what colour codes the ubuntu brand/corp image? Hi Steven, welcome aboard. I'll answer your second questions first if you don't mind. The official colors and logo are available on the Ubuntu Wiki, on the Artwork/Official page, here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Official To answer your first question I'll have to give you a bit of a backstory. Right now, we're halfway into the Edgy Eft (6.10) release of Ubuntu and we're nearing the so-called Feature Freeze. Over the past two months we've been coming up with artistic ideas, textures, colors, compositions, styles, looks and other ideas. The last few weeks were spent creating semi-final produced artwork which will be polished after the freeze. For Edgy, we drafted a plan and schedule to get the artwork done to make sure we work as a structured artwork team. The plan and schedule containing details are available on the following two Wiki pages, it's definitely worth a look to see where we're at in the big picture right now: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Specs/EdgyArtworkPlan https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Specs/ArtworkProcess Where we can use help right now is creating accessibility (large black and white) icons and -within a few days- polishing the chosen artwork direction after the freeze. I'm sure I forgot some things here, so to everyone: feel free to chime in. Also, good (long-term) ideas are welcome on the mailing list, right now we've got some spare time to discuss artwork related subjects. If you hang out on the IRC channel #ubuntu-art on Freenode, you're sure to pick up some interesting discussions as well. Again, welcome to the team Steven, I hope you enjoy your stay here. Re: [ubuntu-art] Hello All
I have contacted Canonical directly about it, perhaps we could set up an effort which formalised the creation of media artwork as it has a different aspect which crosses over into the marketing world. I notice the marketing group currently deals with people who _do_ market ubuntu rather than those that produce the materials which they can use to effectively market. I'm not sure if Canonical will like this idea though, the whole idea a volunteer group that makes marketing materials for oss seems new to me (perhaps mozilla has one I don't know). I would envisage a group effort to prepare, proofread and make available the materials that enable effective marketing; one that creates not just CD covers but things like banners, fliers, CD/DVD inserts (instructions/help information) as well as CD covers, CD case art works and logos. This would take the hard work out of spreading ubuntu in creating a professional and consistent image for the ubuntu 'brand'. Yes. We deal with that sort of thing too, albeit as of late we've been much more into Ubuntu's desktop and feel. :) Feel free to make suggestions, take the initiative with some designs and so forth. As for the actual shipit CD designs - I think Canonical takes care of those. Re: [ubuntu-art] Hello!
hello paulo, you can check out https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ArtworkTeam and irc channel #ubuntu-artwork @ irc.freenode.net for more information ... or just ask here on the list (also check the archives). there will be a meeting soon (29.12. at 2300 UTC) so you are welcome if you have time. otherwise you will have ask what is to be done or just do what you like to do right now as the team is currently not as organized as it should be (we hope that will change after the meeting). cheers, -Luka Paulo Ferreira wrote: Hello everyone!
