I bought mine (with Ubuntu pre-installed!) yesterday from dell.be.
Problem is they only have 10 and 13 inch models AND you have to order
them by phone. So no Windows tax, but also no discount (I don't really
mind that, I'm more then happy to pay for a notebook that's being
certified to work under Linux. It costs Dell time and money as well).

My colleagues tell me they can buy the other models with Linux as
well, but only because they buy a lot of notebooks via their
companies.

Kind regards, and please support

Re: [Ubuntu-be] About the Belgian Local Community Team (BelgianLoCo Team)

Hi,

On Sun, Jul 12, 2009 at 5:45 PM, Pierre

I understand the issue highlighted by Jean's mail concerning the decision
making process of Ubuntu-be. As I earlier tried to told him, there is no
formal decision process in Ubuntu-be because we are not a formal
organozation. And yes, this can be slow down things and be conterproductive.
I've no idea of how it can be solved. I think it can be worked around with
self-organization of small, task focused groups. The only Ubuntu-be wide
action that have to be taken are money spending. For this, we could
formalize voting. Something like: when a decision has to be made, a vote is
called. Every member of the Ubuntu-be team (on Launchpad) registered before
the call has one voice. Votes are open for a limited period of time. After
the voting period, if the majority of the voters have said 'yes', the money
 can be spend.

I really like this idea, I think this is the most important process
that needs to be formalised! [Good idea Pierre!]

The language excuse is the lamest I ever heard. I you really think the
language is the issue, please go create Ubuntu-vla. Go create your own
single language LoCo Team. Go to the LoCo council and explain why you think
it is a good think and respect the Ubuntu spirit. Really, please do it.
Leave us do the multi-language way. We will be pleased to announce for your
events on our mailing list and website. We will be happy to publicize your
realizations too. Unlike our beloved country, we don't have an old legacy
keeping us together. I really think this would be stupid, but clearly you
disagree. Since we cannot find a consensus, we better split up. And since we
are Ubuntu-be, your are to ones who need to leave.

I couldn't agree more :). [humor hat onWe are small enough as it is,

Communicating in English has nothing to do with keeping/loosing your
cultural identity, it is what it is: communicating with a group of
people that have a different native language to do some good for
ubuntu. If your english isn't very well nobody will react irritated
when you speak in your native language (except if it is in an extreme
form of 'Vloanderss' ;-).

Re: [Ubuntu-be] Proposal for printing new posters and flyers for Ubuntu-be

2009-07-09 Thread Rob Van Dyck
I actually second the motivation of Mark. I agree it is a good price
and that the posters draw attention, but then again spending 20 % of
the available budget just to have even more posters doesn't seem
right. Why not utilise the 800 first?

On a second note: is it legal to advertise by printing posters mocking
the competition(Microsoft windows lapop with chains on)?
I can imagine a funny poster of Proximus showing a man trying to use
his Base phone, but who is unable to get a connection? [ok, Base got
better :-]
Or a Mercedes poster showing a Daihatsu with engine trouble?
If I'm correct it only recently got legal to compare prices in a commercial.
I think you get my point :).

Third: (and I don't mean this in a bad way, the posters are funny)
when I talk to people about ubuntu I try to point out the important
advantages (free, open, legal, central application inventory, central
upgrades, security, ...), I don't try to mock Windows. So should we go
that way with the posters?

Best regards,
Rob.

discussing something without having to wait until tomorrow or even later.
Like this one. The discussion started Saturday, and I can count the comments
on hands and toes. With an live chat sessions, you will have more
discussion, more people who will talk, more ideas.

Plus: mails can be ignored, or you can privately answer them. It harder to
do this in a chat session. The moderator can ask everyone to answer the

discussions like this my whole life and I think it's the better way. But
 that's just my opinion.

Yep, that's what mailing lists are for: asynchronous discussion. And
wikis are for collaborative asynchronous writing. The good news is
that we already have these two tools, we just have to use them
(actually, this is the hardest part).

 launchpad fanboy
If at some point we need more focused mailing lists for sub-team to
lower volume on this one, Launchpad does offer mailing lists for
teams. For instance, we could easily create a mailing list for
ubuntu-be web editors (to discuss the content of the website) since we
already have a Launchpad team. But i don't think we need that now.

For voting, I think it's one of the features of Launchpad Blueprints.

I think the mailing list of other communities is used more often to

Re: [Ubuntu-be] HCC Ubuntu event in Mechelen

2008-10-27 Thread Rob Van Dyck
Even een follow-up hierover:

Alsook: media. Zijn die voor 8.10 dan al beschikbaar? Indien niet,
hebben we er nog van 8.04 (Bart?). Posters zouden ook nog van pas
komen (Francois?),

Groetjes,
Rob.

Re: [Bug 206439] Re: smb password protected share cannot be accessed

2008-04-28 Thread rob van dyck
With me Nautilus always asks for credentials for password protected shares,
but a message 'failed to load windows share' always comes up. Also when
using the ip isntead of the dns name.

Kind regards,
Rob.

On Sat, Apr 26, 2008 at 12:12 AM, Markus Eisenstoeck
[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

I can confirm this too with password protected samba shares.

Nautlius does not ask for credentials.

gvfs-mount does, but the created share does not work.
funny thing is when using the IP number instead of the host name,
everything works as expected (nautilus and gvfs-mount). In this case
 credentials are asked and used.

 e.g. smb://media/music works not, smb://192.168.0.4/music works.

 hope this helps.

In case we are talking about individual pick-ups, let us try to mail

 Hoi Kevin,

Ik drop ze wel even bij jou af, mag ik je adres? [en indien je niet thuis
bent, kan ik ze ergens achterlaten (achterdeur fozo?)].

put back in the saving-account for the next purchase
   - overseeing the incoming/outgoing transactions and having control over
 them

Re: [Ubuntu-be] leuven food train station action

2007-10-21 Thread Rob Van Dyck
Hi,

Since nobody has replied on the 'who brings a compiz laptop', I'm not
going to bring my projector. I have written some cd's though.

Kind regards and see you at the kebap [I'll wear my gnome T-shirt :-],
Rob.

Re: [Ubuntu-be] ReleaseActions - Volunteers needed

2007-10-17 Thread Rob Van Dyck
Hi Mark,

The power issue could be resolved if I park my car in the parking lot,
and then leave my car running while tapping energy from my car (the
distance to the underground passage is about 10 meters I think, and I
have the gear).
The only thing I don't have is an ubuntu laptop with compiz [my work
laptop is secured by pointsec, and I do not want to mess with it too
much].

Kind regards,
Rob.

Ok, I will come with a projector
Are you sure you want to do that?
 * No power.
 * A station is a fairly hostile environment for computer equipment.
 Remember there's no insurance!
 * Many people on their way to their student house. If you're lucky,
you can expect to get seconds from them, not minutes.

Also, do we burn some CD's up front? It's not on the wiki.
We don't have a lot of time to convince people here. Having a few
 (50?) ready might be interesting.

Re: [Ubuntu-be] ReleaseActions - Volunteers needed

2007-10-16 Thread Rob Van Dyck
Hi Francois,

Ok, I will come with a projector, but I do not have a power supply.
Anybody else has one? I also don't have a laptop with Ubuntu (and
compiz) on it, so somebody should bring one [my desktop is too much
work to bring along :-].
Also, do we burn some CD's up front? It's not on the wiki. But I can
imagine people trying it a lot faster if they allready receive a cd
for it and don't need to download the ISO (I remember that kotnet [the
ISP most of the students use], has a very limited download limit, so
they won't download it just for fun).

Greets,
Rob.

 Hi,
Considering that most students arrive between 19h and 22h, I propose the
 following for 21st in Leuven:
Come together at 18:45 at the exit of the trainstation tunnel under the
panel with bus schedule from 'De lijn'.
If you have a computer, and you want to take it with you; be sure to
 have a lock with you.

This is the first time we do it, so I would try to keep it simple and
see how it turns out. If you have a projector and a power supply
(generator?) then it could be nice.

 François
