OK, so the question is more... what should be the default size ? Is the 10Gb default size inherited from some other requirement, like EC2 ? I'm un-milestoning this bug. The changes have been commited to vmbuilder trunk. vmbuilder trunk is what we're using to build the images for ec2/uec. The fix is also released in those images (included in beta images). Expected the updater to either merge the conf file or use prev, and it crashed instead. Tried a 3-way merge on the conf file... unsuccessful. This was entirely my fault. I thought I remembered, in the past when I've upgraded Samba, that the upgrade process wanted to write a new smb.conf file. So this time, I decided to pre-emptively rename smb.conf so that it wouldn't be overwritten. What I should have done is save a copy of it, not rename it. I fixed my error and applied your suggested dpkg command and the configuration successfully completed. Normally I wouldn't have filed a bug report, but the automated process led me through it and ... When Ubuntu is started: smbclient -L localhost -U% shows all the shares I configured in smb.conf smbclient -L 192.168.0.14 -U% returns the error message: failed (Error NT_STATUS_CONNECTION_REFUSED). NOTE: the IP is the IP of the machine itself (not a remote machine). If I run manually sudo /etc/init.d/samba restart Then samba is working OK.
