[Bug 1048121] Re: mythweb/php-mythtv incompatibility with PHP 5.4.x

2012-11-29 Thread Chuck Smith
Seconding what Drumz notes. The upstream patches also work great when
applied to my system (Ubuntu 12.10 w/ current MythTV). This is a major
problem within the context of the mythweb package since basically every
upgraded release re-breaks the behavior. Obviously, a downgrade of PHP
is out of the question, but maybe you could incorporate this particular
upstream patch set into any further 12.10 mytweb rebuilds that take
place? Sorry that I'm not super clear on how the specifics of this work,
but I'm guessing that's an easier change to manage than backporting all
the 0.26 myth releases to Ubuntu 12.10... If I can assist in any way,
please give a shout!

[Bug 281993] Re: [intrepid] REGRESSION: multimedia keys no longer working

2008-11-28 Thread Chuck Smith
** Description changed:

- I have a Microsoft Wireless Keyboard 3000, part of a wireless RF
- keyboard/mouse bundle, which comes with several media keys (Back,
- Forward, Play/Pause, Vol. Down, Vol. Up, Mute, Home, Search, Mail and
- Calculator). They worked perfectly in Hardy once I got all the keysyms
- straight in gnome-keybinding-properties.
-
- Since updating to Intrepid beta (via update-manager), none of these
- multimedia keys work anymore. Apparently, no KeyPress/KeyRelease event
- is generated when they are pressed (checked with gnome-keybinding-
- properties and with xev). Further, I have gone as far as to go to a
- (tty) console and use 'kbd_mode -s' to see the raw input from the
- keyboard (thankfully I remembered about SysRq+R before rebooting ;)),
- and the multimedia keys do not generate any.
-
- I am using the Generic 105 keys international distribution, which used
- to work perfectly under Hardy. I have also tried many other
- possibilities, including every Microsoft-branded keyboard in the
- database, several unrelated models and some of the generic keyboards
- (including the "Evdev-managed"), to no avail.
-
- I have seen several other similar bugs, but none of them related to
- exactly the same behavior. I am using Intrepid beta, up to date.
+ Microsoft Wireless Keyboard 3000 user here. Confirming this is indeed a
+ regression. I didn't realize how much I relied on the special keys
+ until they disappeared! Would appreciate any insight into why this
+ regression occurred, in addition to what might be done to fix it.

[Bug 81398] Re: [Edgy PATCH] Radio on PVR-150 outputs only noise.

2008-03-11 Thread Chuck Smith
I don't really think that's a fair criticism, Tanner, given that the
original bug post notes that there was an extant upstream patch -- an
upstream version that the Ubuntu roadmap had already committed to
merging in a future release, thus making a fix in the current release a
backport at best.

What complicates the situation further is that the Canonical patching
policy is pretty clear that post-release patches will be security-only,
as the feature freeze for Edgy had passed when this bug was filed.
While it was clearly an important issue at the time, and I appreciate
your work in filing this bug to fix the then-current version of Ubuntu,
this patch was not security-related, so the expectation of having that
bug handled for feature-addition in the same release was unreasonable.

"won't fix" is fine and expected for this bug in Edgy; "upstream fix" is
appropriate for future releases. Thanks to the triage team for making
their way around here, but what luck, that the upstream codebase has
already fixed this issue!

[Bug 137138] Re: [Gutsy] mythfrontend crashes on video playback

2007-09-07 Thread Chuck Smith
The symptoms between Matthijs' problem and mine are identical, which
leads me to speculate the causes are similar... Matthijs' problem,
however, is documented already. Mine shouldn't, in theory, be
happening. What fun :)

Thru a terminal, I've done

mythfrontend --debug all > /foo/bar/output_log.txt

or whatever the command is to give maximally-verbose debug output, and
all I can tell is that things appear to be going normally right up until
X pukes, at which point the logging stops because the terminal window is
killed.

Any suggestions about A) how to better gather debug information from
mythfrontend or B) how to ascertain if there's anything related to
compiz that's running for some reason and causing the instability in
Mythtv? Please let me know if there's anything I can to to help unearth
clues. I'll be happy to help!

[Bug 137138] Re: [Gutsy] mythfrontend crashes on video playback

2007-09-06 Thread Chuck Smith
Is that right, Maathijs? I'll give that a shot when I get home from
work tonight to see if that makes a difference. If I can at least run
it windowed, that'd make my situation a little more tolerable.

Mario, this is a little worse than the known Compiz / Beryl known
issues.

Initially after installing Gutsy, I did have the problem where it
wouldn't work with Compiz effects enabled. I could run mythtv by
choosing "No Effects" in the Appearance applet, and everything was fine.

However, now my crashing occurs even when I choose "No Effects". In
fact, I even uninstalled compiz and used Gnome + Metacity to verify
nothing remotely compiz-y was running. Exact same crash occurs. So I
don't think this is a duplicate of the Compiz / Beryl issue.

[Bug 137138] mythfrontend crashes on video playback

2007-09-03 Thread Chuck Smith
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mythtv-frontend

Hi all -- Major problem over here with mtythv (specifically, I think,
mythfrontend).

On Friday, I rebooted after 8 days of uptime (I just love testing new
releases, don't you?), and found that mythtv would not play back video
any longer -- it completely takes down X, too, returning me to the
Ubuntu login screen. This includes live video off my Hauppauge PVR-350,
or recordings from the database.

Mythbackend and the tuner card are working fine-and-dandy: I'm still
automatically recording new shows, can interface with the backend thru
mythweb, and can even play back those shows in VLC without a hitch.

Earlier, enabling any of the Compiz Fusion effects caused a crash on
mythtv *load*, but I disabled that and mythtv worked fine.

Relevant hardware specs:

-PVR-350
-P4 / 2.8GHz
-GeForce 6800 (I think is the number) graphics card.

Changing, e.g., deinterlacing off, disabling XvMC, disabling the Open GL
timing option, etc., have had no effect.

This almost sounds like a graphics card issue to me, but I can't get any
other program to cause the same symptoms, hence why I'm filing this as a
mythtv-frontend issue.

Please contact me for anything w/r/t assistance with this issue. I'll
be happy to help!

[Bug 46603] Re: Notification bubble + autohide panel = bad notification

2007-07-08 Thread Chuck Smith
Hi Paul -- There is still an issue at hand, but there is not the problem
as exhibited in Dapper with the more recent Feisty. Allow me to
explain...

In Dapper, the bubble pop-ups were in cartoon-dialogue style. As a
result, the bottom of the box came to a point, which from a UX
perspective, one expects to point to the item which is requesting
attention or providing output to the user. This did not happen in the
old version.

The new versions of these notifications use rounded rectangles. The
advantage is that such messages don't imply directionality as far as the
icon which is providing output. However, the hidden panel still rises
behind the bubble notification. It seems that in almost every
situation, this is not the expected ordering, especially given the
"always-on-top" nature of panels relative to non full-screen windows.

This is obviously a low-priority bug, and there may be nothing for
Ubuntu to do with it at this point. However, I do still feel the
interaction between the notification and a panel with auto-hide is less
than desirable.

I won't be offended if this is resolved as won't fix -- but I wanted to
at least bring it to the attention of devs.

Thanks for the follow-up, and thanks for your work, as well!

[Bug 81398] Re: [Edgy PATCH] Radio on PVR-150 outputs only noise.

2007-01-30 Thread Chuck Smith
Confirming the patch works for PVR-350 as well.

Here's my How-To:

I grabbed the latest 2.6.17-10-generic source, copied to a new directory
so I could screw things up, went to that directory and did the
following:

make oldconfig
make

and waited a long time before I could grab the module from [path-to-
source-tree]/drivers/media/video/tuner.ko

modprobe -r ivtv
modprobe -r tuner
modprobe ivtv (will auto-load tuner as a dependency)

And lo and behold, the damned radio works!

My understanding is that this issue will be patched in kernel 2.6.20 --
if that goes out before the KernelFreeze deadline, no distro-specific
work would have to be done to fix this in Upstream.

This might be worth throwing together a Wiki page... I don't have time
right now, but could do that at some point in the rather indefinite
future.

If it would be helpful, I would be willing to apply the patch and
recompile the kernel to test this patch with a PVR-350. (While I have
rolled kernels before, I have not done so with patches, so I may need
the teensiest bit of assistance, but I promise to not be obnoxious.)
Please email me or reply to this thread if you'd like me to give it a
shot.

[Bug 59924] Re: XFce heap not purging

2006-09-24 Thread Chuck Smith
I also run the latest Dapper Xubuntu (i368 / 686-smp kernel) packages,
and can confirm excessive memory usage over time with the xfdesktop
package. My symptoms seem exactly as described above.

Suggest we change the bug title to reflect how this is a regression
within the fglrx drivers for solely the R2x0 chips.
