[Bug 534340] Re: Movie player fails to play DVD disc

2010-10-31 Thread Elton Woo
ADDENDUM: my foregoing comment relates to Movie Player in Meerkat
(ubuntu 10,10) / Netbook remiix on Asus EEE 1000 PC. The most recent
updates [TODAY: 31 OCT. 2010 16:28 EST] have been installed, but do not
rectify the problem.

I have used the "Help" dialog in the application to upload a report.

[Bug 534340] Re: Movie player fails to play DVD disc

2010-10-31 Thread Elton Woo
When I try to play any AVI files from a DVD, they start the first few
seconds then Movie Player stops with the current image on screen. The
same happens if I copy the file to the hard drive on the netbook. The
problem also occurs when I load a commercial movie disk

The 4 popup error dialogs are consistent, and consistently in the same
order as follows: (topmost error dialog first):

1) An error occurred
Disconnected: Connection terminated

2) An error occurred
pa_stream_cork() failed: Connection terminated

3) An error occurred
Disconnected: Connection terminated

4) An error occurred
pa_stream_writable_size() failed: Connection terminated

The most recent updates [TODAY: 31 OCT. 2010 16:28 EST] do not seem to fix it
either.

FWIW: libdvdread4 and libdvdnav4 *are* installed.

@ Robb Romans:
I have an Asus eee 1000 PC, *no hardware modifications*, so it should be the
same as your machine. I manually installed Lucid Lynx as posted in the ubuntu

I never installed the RaLink drivers, and after the system was running for a

@ Strange Movement [you said:] kernel 2.6.32-22 was released, has anyone
tried it ?

Is this in the Update Manager list? I foolishly installed the first
kernel update _from the channel_ once I had Lucid installed. (I had used
Ricardo Salvetri's patched kernel to get online). After installing this
update and rebooting, it was back to the *same problem* of being asked
again and again for the password.

As a test, I installed the 2.6.33-3 kernel and no more connection worries.

Ralink but if they are so "open-source friendly" why are their latest

I have no 'relationship' with Ralink, nor do I represent any other
company or entity that may be mentioned in this forum. My enthusiastic
tone WRT RaLink was based on merely *seeing* that they do have drivers
available. Until reading your response, I was totally unaware of the
real situation. I merely used Ricardo Salvetri's patched kernel post-
install of LUCID.

In the ubuntu forums the section with networking is high traffic due to the

getting bad press.

WRT RaLink and Realtek, I am pleased to inform you that these manufacturers

[Bug 496093] Re: [lucid] rt2860 frequently fails to connect to mixed mode WPA/WPA2 secured wireless networks

2010-04-30 Thread Elton Woo
Normally, I prefer to do a clean install of a release. This time, I
upgraded from Karmic to Lucid. Since I could not connect with the Asus
EEE 1000, I downloaded the Ricardo Salvetri's patched kernel with mhy
Macbook then installed it on the Asus from a USB key. I was then able to
connect to the Internet.

Meantime, I burnt the ISO to SD, intending to do a clean install.
(...and *copied* the patched kernel to the root directory of the memory
stick, so I could have everything 'at hand' after the install).

During this time, I removed some packages on the Asus, and may have
broken something, since I am back to the same problem: Network applet
asking for the WPA /WPA2 password over and over. I ever *re-installed*
Ricardo's kernel, to no avail. Warm boots, or cold boots, not
difference...

I confess that I do most of my installation and configuration using the
GUI tools. Writing this on my Macbook, I turned off the Asus for a few
minutes. I just booted it up, and I'm again connected (so maybe the
netbook is just being 'tempermental'! :-)

I'm about to finish this post, and once again, the dialog is popping up.
... maybe it's also related to ADSL line quality ... though I don't get
the faintest hiccup on my connections with the Airport card on my Mac...

I haven't followed too closely about what is being dropped from the CD
for lack of space, but I understand that The Gimp is one of them. At the
risk of dumping yet another important package from the CD, why not just
'bite the bullet' and do so [remove another (other) packag(s) from the
CD]?

Perhaps even substitute Xfce or a lighter desktop in place of Nautilus
(?), just to ensure that a proper kernel is included... Linux
enthusiasts like myself might gripe a bit, but at least we will be ABLE
to CONNECT and GET what is missing.

=>The kernel is the *heart* of the OS. Anything *less* than this fixed
kernel and Canonical / Ubuntu is giving birth to a *seriously
handicapped* (...dare I say 'stillborn'?) child. <=

2010-04-21 Thread Elton Woo
@ PhIlG: this is a "catch-22" situation, and as you so rightly said:
"...the Lucid image will not contain the updated drivers. This places users in
the position of needing to upgrade in order to have functioning wireless, but
being unable to upgrade because their wireless isn't functioning."

Fine for users who have a second machine with which to connect and get
the fixes, but what happens if it is the only machine, AND said users
sole means of connection is via wireless?

... what then?

[Bug 496093] Re: [lucid] rt2860 frequently fails to connect to mixed mode WPA/WPA2 secured wireless networks

2010-04-20 Thread Elton Woo
@ Ricardo Salvetri: I would like to add my voice in saying "thank you"
for your work on the kernel.

@Jeremy Foshee: From your comments, would I be correct for me to
understand that you are one of the team who will make the final decision
before Lucid goes gamma? FWIW: I am one of those Asus EEE user mentioned
by Michal Pěnka. Intially, thought that the problem was merely with the
WPA supplicant, or just the drivers ... and *only with Lucid*.

However, I also downloaded and tried other distros (as live CD's), such
as: Mandriva, Easy Peasy, EEEbuntu, Knoppix, and even Fedora. The
problem was / is consistent across all these distros.

Further investigation led me to this forum, and I felt some hope that
the next release of ubuntu would be something 'for the masses'. Ubuntu
has established justly-deserved reputation for being a very user-
friendly distro.

As an 'end user' two things attracted me to Ubuntu:

1) The end of the 'dependencies nightmare' that invariably occurred with
rpm distros, thanks to debian and apt / synaptic.

2) Ease of use: no beating my head against a wall to install drivers for
peripherals. Everything "just works". The only 'hard work' for the end
user is installation, and some basic configuration: internet, and
personal preferences.

If the other distros' current betas 'go gold' with a _properly patched
kernel_, it will look very bad for Canonical / Ubuntu.

I am no 'coder / programmer'. I confess that my desire to see Ubuntu's
LUCID come out "looking good" is probably due to the fact that they are
headquartered in Montreal ...so my enthusiasm for this distro is
somewhat tainted with a bit of 'Canadian pride'.

IMVHO, it would preferable for Ubuntu to delay the release another few
days ...or even a week, rather than have 'egg on their faces'.

... just my two canuck cents worth ...

respectfully...

[Bug 496093] Re: [lucid] rt2860 frequently fails to connect to mixed mode WPA/WPA2 secured wireless networks

2010-04-19 Thread Elton Woo
@ Ricardo:
Imagine the bad publicity for linux if the next release comes out *without* the
patch. Not just long time users of linux, but what about those new to the OS
who will install the new release, only to find that they can't connect to the
internet?

Connectivity nowadays is primordial and crucial, if the end user is to
either get updates or even to get HELP about anything.

It is to be fervently hoped that the 2.6.33 kernel *will* be included
with the final release. Connecting with Karmic on my netbook, can be
(infrequently) flaky, but now, with a NEWER release of the distro, *not*
being able to connect at all ... not good.

2009-08-08 Thread Elton Woo
I should know better to leave well enough alone: HOWEVER. old habits (as
a beta tester) are hard to break.

... as a test, I reverted to "netbook" and got the following error:

/begin quote

An error occurred while loading or saving configuration information for
netbook-launcher. Some of your configuration settings may not work
properly.

Failed to contact configuration server; some possible causes are that
you need to enable TCP/IP networking for ORBit, or you have stale NFS
locks due to a system crash. See http://projects.gnome.org/gconf/ for
information. (Details - 1: Could not send message to gconf daemon:
Message did not receive a reply (timeout by message bus))

/end quote

/REM I wonder if this might relate to processor speed, since the intial
reporte of this bug is using an Asus 900, whereas my machine is the
newer Asus 1000. Hyperthreading is turned on by default in the BIOS.

When I booted back, the netbook interface was available, WITH the
classic was also visible in the background. I easily reverted to the
classic look. Now, though the 'compiz' toolbar which looks like the OS/X
toolbar is now on the desktop behind the bottom launcher.

However, none of the icons in the 'compiz' toolbar work.

... taking my *own* advice: if it works, don't fsck with it! L0)

[Bug 349519] Re: Switch Desktop Mode corrupted settings

2009-08-07 Thread Elton Woo
Success at last! After Installing desktop-switcher_0.4.6_i386.deb, I
rebooted, but still no desktop icons. A cold boot showed no change: I
still had the top and bottom launchers, but no objects on the desktop:
mounted disks, or the image file that I had copied in the file manager.
I had a hairy moment when I went to the Preferences menu and chose to
switch modes: I was able to switch to "netbook" , but when I attemped to
switch back, the dialog box behaved very strangely:

At each click of the mouse the dialog would minimize to the upper LEFT
of the screen, and then jump back. During this time the contents of the
dialog were not legible, as part of the screen turned black. After a few
tries I was finally able to select "classic" *THEN* find the "OK"
button. some more flickering, and then I finally got back my desktop,
this time INCLUDING icons of objects on the desktop and the mounted
drives.

/REM I wonder if the refresh rate had anything to to with this. BEFORE
installing the update, I had changed the display in my Asus EEE 1000
from 1024 x 600, 60 Hz (default) to 65 Hz.

Hopefully the newer package will be added to the updates channel to
facilitate newer users.

[Bug 349519] Re: Switch Desktop Mode corrupted settings

2009-08-07 Thread Elton Woo
@ Tony:
/begin quote

There is a fix for this (as explaned above! -
 desktop-switcher_0.4.6_i386.deb (38.2 KiB, application/x-debian-package)
I still have not gotten around to installing it

AFAIK, this problem only happens if you shutdown/restart whilst in
"Classic" mode.

/end quote

   **I beg to differ**:

First of all, I did the switch to "Classic" *AND* rebooted _without_ switching
back.
Since doing so, I have turned off the machine and done a cold boot (a few hours
later)

I DO have the default launchers at the top and bottom of the screen.
HOWEVER: I do not get any icons on the desktop when I mount my drives
(fixed partitions, USB stick(s), SD card, or external DVD/ CD writer.

e.g. I used to have a picture on the desktop. *Now*, if I go to Places => Home
=> Pictures, I can copy and paste the photo to the "Places" Desktop. The photo
/ icon shows up in the file browser (desktop) but when I actually go to the
desktop itself, the photo icon does not show up!
Synaptic shows that I have this packaged INSTALLED:
desktop-switcher 0.4.4-0ubuntu1 ("latest version" AND "installed version")
also, I have already done a packages update, and
desktop-switcher_0.4.6_i386.deb, apparently did not come down with the latest
updates.

I guess I'll have to google it, manually install the package / version
that you suggest, and report back.

while posting this, I found the package, but GDebi warns me:
"An older version is available in a software channel

Generally you are recommended to install the version from the software channel,
since it is usually better supported."
so it's clear that this is not yet on canonical, correct?

proceeding with the install...

!! Thank you for the pointer to the newer package. !!

[Bug 349519] Re: Switch Desktop Mode corrupted settings

2009-08-07 Thread Elton Woo
@sachin:
This is very strange. I had printed up your suggestions, and was about to
follow the directions. Guess what?
I had NO NEED to do so.

NOTE: Machine: ASUS EEE 1000 PC

1) I had re-installed the [ASUS] Xandros distro, after reading your post, I
did a CLEAN install of Jaunty 9.40 NBR from my SD card.
2) Once the system initially booted, I went to my system preferences and
switched to desktop mode.
3) Select "REBOOT" and stepped away from the machine to read the rest of my
emails on my Macintosh.

To my surprise I went back to the Asus and found that I had the standard
desktop.

To VERIFY, I selected reboot again. sat and *watched* the machine, and
it came up again _as it should_: NO MISSING PANELS or menus.

*** I had NO NEED to follow your workaround. ***

INSTALL METHOD: Manual,
/dev/sda partitioned as follows: 7 Gb [ext3] mount point / , swap at end of
partition 1 Gb
/dev/ sdb 32 Gb [ext3] mount point /home

/REM: This was done before installing any additional applications, or
downloading the latest updates.
Code on the machine is the default from the NBR image file as provided from
Ubuntu.

/ REM: I *know* that I had previously installed / re-installed the 9.10
NBR a couple of times, and each time I was able to switch desktop modes
without Bug 349519 ever rearing its ugly head on my Asus.

/REM: The only difference in past installs was that _THIS TIME_ I had
initially installed Jaunty 9.10 NBR _without_ a SWAP partition.

Hence:
/dev/sda [ext3] mount point /
/dev/sdb [ext3] mount point /home

!!! This was the only (and first) time that I encountered Bug 349519 on
my Asus EEE 1000 PC. !!!
Previous installs never exhibited this problem, even after constant upgrades
from the update channel, or installation of third party applications ...
including the bug fix for Pidgin (bug: not connecting to Yahoo).

[Bug 349519] Re: Switch Desktop Mode corrupted settings

2009-08-07 Thread Elton Woo
@sachin:
Thank you.
What is the name of the UNR launcher executable? I re-installed the (defualt)
Xandros distro, and I was thinking of installing either EEEbuntu or Easy Peasy,
but since both of these are based on ubuntu, I suspect that the problem might
exist across these variations of the distro.

[Bug 349519] Re: Switch Desktop Mode corrupted settings

2009-08-06 Thread Elton Woo
I feel reasonably certain that i have not encountered this bug until
yesterday, when several installs resulted the same way: switching to
standard mode from netbook, and upon reboot, I lose both top and bottom
panels and can only right click on the desktop. As such, I cannot even
open a console, let alone get to a menu.

The problem is consistent: at one install I switched desktop mode
*before* installing any updates, and another time, I did the switch
after the most recent updates [06 AUG 09] were received from the channel
and installed.

... hence my QUESTION:
how soon may one reasonably expect a fix to be in the updates channel?

I only intend to run Jaunty on my Asus EEE 1000 PC, but not Karmic or
any unstable / development code. I would really like to switch to the
desktop mode, but am willing to wait until a fix is out ... if it's not
too long a wait...

[Bug 389322] Re: Yahoo server authentication changed: Pidgin =<2.5.6 will not connect to Yahoo! servers.

2009-07-01 Thread Elton Woo

Damiano Dallatana: Your suggestion to remove the "@yahoo.ca" from my login
seems to work, I no longer get the error 1013 message, Thank you.

Dominque DeSalla: I didn't have to change the server information.

Dave Stroud: thanks for your suggestion, I was able to find the deb
package Pidgin 2.5.8. it is however www.getdeb.net, instead of
getdeb.COM. I note that the site warns that the current package has to
be removed, so I take it that GDebi installer will not simply treat this
as an update.

I only use synaptic or gdebi to install packages, so I would need instructions
on how to install the ones at getdeb.com ... or can I add getdeb.com to the
Software Sources?

[Bug 389322] Re: Yahoo server authentication changed: Pidgin =<2.5.6 will not connect to Yahoo! servers.

2009-07-01 Thread Elton Woo
I am running Pidgin 2.5.5 in ubuntu 9.04 netbook remix. It simply says
'connecting" but fails to connect to yahoo.ca chat.
I did as per the instructions HERE:http://www.pidgin.im/download/ubuntu/:

To setup the PPA, copy-and-paste these commands into a terminal:

sudo apt-key adv --recv-keys --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com \
67265eb522bdd6b1c69e66ed7fb8bee0a1f196a8

echo deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/pidgin-developers/ppa/ubuntu \
`lsb_release --short --codename` main | \
sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/pidgin-ppa.list

Once this PPA is setup, Pidgin updates will show up in Update Manager
along with the usual Ubuntu updates. The PPA will need to be re-setup
only after upgrading Ubuntu.

When I launched the update manager, it did show availabie updates for
pidgin and libpurple.

After updating, and rebooting the system, "About" now indicates:
Pidgin 2.5.7
(libpurple 2.5.7)

Now I get {userna...@yahoo.ca} disabled
Unknown error number 1013. Logging into the Yahoo! website may fix this.
I can login to my account using Firefox (ver.3.0.11), but no success with
Pidgin.
