I think I have the same problem, when I change any compiz options with compizconfigsettings manager compiz crashes (the windows borders disappear) and I have to execute the unity python script to put things back to normal. It happened to me after trying to clean the computer with the computer-janitor (and failing) The system is telling me that there is an other manager running (like update manager or Synaptic) whereas there isn't. On my computer, I just have to log on on my favorite Desktop, the menu usually appears like int should be. I then launch say evolution, and the menus are then duplicated. After that, if I close evolution, the little arrow on the left still appears as if evolution wasn't closed and this menu is useless, I have to use the second one to start evolution again. Now a when evolution is closed a second time this start all over again. PS : It removed cairo-dock as well Apparently, the libwebkitgtk used by cairo-dock and the other applications are not in the same version. But the thing I found strange is that the package manager did not ask me whether I wanted to keep cairo or install the updates. I think I found a way around the bug. I performed the upgrade through the synaptic package manager and reinstalled the package afterward. But after that I still had a dependency problem, as I see it, the cairo- dock (and its plugins) were conflicting with the libwebkitgtk. The way I found that out was by manually installing the libwebkitgtk (after having recieved several dep problem concerning this library). " (see screenshot) So here I am Though the partial upgrade goes on with lists of package to remove and upgrade, in the list of the package to remove is unity, which seems problematic to me, as I still want to use the ubuntu desktop edition ( and not the ubuntu classic desktop). I don't know if removing unity will prevent me from doing that but I did not see any replacement package on the install list so I am not upgrading from now on... I do have gnome-session 2.31.1-0ubuntu9 installed on my computer (verified through the synaptic manager) and after reinstallation of this package and a reboot, the problem persists. Public bug reported: When logging in ubuntu natty 11.04 alpha1 (with both unity and the classic Desktop (gnome-panel)), the desktop background is showing normally but there are no launcher, no files and no display of the mounted disk,as one would normally expect (see attached screenshot). The right-click feature (giving access the the appearance preference for example) is also unavailable.
