[Bug 1891450] Re: Settings > Sound > Inputs ON/OFF toggle does not show true microphone state

2020-08-13 Thread Hedley Finger
The bug reporting procedure is far too complex. Only highly motivated users
wade through the swamp of apport, etc. to finally get through to the actual
bug-reporting form. Surely the instructions could be replaced with a GUI app
bolted onto apport. When a bug is not a crash but some lesser malfunction in
system software, surely a user should be able to right-click in a window and
choose Report Bug or Improvement from a context menu, and then the app would
gather all the information needed.

Many users who are using Ubuntu as a replacement for Mac OS or Windows
would be completely befuddled by the hoops you have to crawl through to
communicate to Canonical/Launchpad. I certainly won't be reporting bugs
in future unless it is life-threatening. I am a rusted-on Ubuntu fan
with some facility with the CLI, but this is all too much.

[Bug 1891450] [NEW] Settings > Sound > Inputs ON/OFF toggle does not show true microphone state

2020-08-13 Thread Hedley Finger
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 18.04.5 LTS Bionic Beaver
gnome-control-center (gnome-sound-properties?)

I recently used sound input for the first time ever to attend a Zoom
session. I opened Settings > Sound > Inputs and saw that the microphone
was switched ON. In fact, it was disabled, and it was many days before I
realised that the ON/OFF toggle and the microphone state were out of
synch. So I was able to activate the microphone by toggling OFF then ON.

This is a bad usability issue.

[Bug 1882938] [NEW] Procedure for printing booklet does not state application program

Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 18.04.4

On the Help page

the procedure for printing booklets with a single-sided printer does not tell
the reader what program the instructions refer to. It is not possible to carry
out the procedure without this information.

Re: [Bug 1876555] Re: Apps cannot retrieve internal mic input

2020-05-04 Thread Hedley Finger
Wang:

I've never had to use it since I bought it, so I don't know if it could
work from the start. It is only because of Covid-19 and having to use Zoom
and Skype for our group activities that the necessity has come up.

I think it is s software problem, not hardware because on Settings > Sound
> Input I can unmute (On) the mic and see the sound bars showing the level.
The Sound Recorder app also records clips and plays them back. I cannot get
the sound input settings to work in Skype and Zoom. on that, although the
level meters work, Skype test calls and Zoom recipients can't hear me.

There are two issues:
1. The Ubuntu Settings > Sound > Input settings do not reflect the actual
state of the sound input, and even if the mic is unmuted (On), this setting
is lost on shut down or sleep regardless of what the mic setting is.
2. Apps cannot access the mic input when it is active.

My attempts to load the snd_cs46xx kernel module and to add the
below options to the end of alsa-base.conf were 'solutions' found on the
internet:
options snd-hda-intel model=dell-vostro-2520
options snd-hda-intel dmic_detect=0

The Cirrus Logic CS4213 codec is used in a number of older Dell models.

Hope this helps,
Hedley

[Bug 1876555] [NEW] Apps cannot retrieve internal mic input

2020-05-03 Thread Hedley Finger
Public bug reported:

Could be pulseaudio, alsa-driver, or
   ~$ /usr/bin/gnome-control-center sound input

Dell Vostro 2520 dual-boot laptop
Intel Corporation 7 Series/C216 Chipset Family High Definition Audio Controller
(rev 04)
2- Cirrus Logic High Definition Audio, model CS4213
Ubuntu 18.04.4 LTS
Windows 10 Home, v. 1903, bld 18362.778
Skype 8.59 (Ubu & Win)
Zoom (cloud meetings) 5.0.3x (Ubu), 5.0.1x (Win)
pulseaudio 1:11.1-1ubuntu7.5
alsa-driver -- package could not be found:
~$ apt-cache policy alsa-driver
N: Unable to locate package alsa-driver

Does this help? /lib/modules/5.3.0-51-generic/kernel/sound/drivers

In Settings > Sound > Input, the On/Off [unmute/mute] setting *appearance* is
preserved over reboots and awakenings from sleep, but the mic input sound is
always muted despite the control still being set to On (unmute). Clicking mute
(Off), then unmute (On) restores mic input, as shown by the level meter
tracking input sounds.

However, Skype 8.59x and Zoom 5.0.3x cannot receive sound inputs
*despite* their sound level meters (in their respective sound settings)
registering changing input levels. The Skype test call does not work. I
opened a Zoom meeting with my wife on her Win 10 computer. I could see
and hear her, and she could see but not hear me.

On this dual-boot laptop, Skype 8.59x fails the test call under Windows
10 Home.

The Sound Recorder app can successfully record mic input and play it
back. pavucontrol shows input on its level meter.

Notes:

+ ~$ /usr/bin/gnome-control-center sound input
(gnome-control-center:17284): sound-cc-panel-WARNING **: 16:48:28.795:
Couldn't find a stream
from the active input

+ Many days searching the internet and AskUbuntu have not produced a solution
that works. (For
what it is worth, many posters have reported that sound became
dysfunctional after upgrading
to 18.04 or 18.04.4.)

+ I have added the snd-cs46xx kernel module and firmware to get around driver
licensing issues
following the instructions at https://wiki.debian.org/snd-cs46xx, Debian 8.

+ I have added these lines to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf :

options snd-hda-intel model=dell-vostro-2520

+ In PulseAudio Volume Control I have set the following:

[Bug 1547762] Re: "SSL Protocol Error" in Chromium for several Google web sites after installing Ubuntu Security Updates for libnss3

2016-03-07 Thread Hedley Finger
Bizarrely, no problems as reported above with Chromium Version
48.0.2564.116 running on Toshiba Satellite C660 i386 32-bit laptop with
Ubuntu 14.04 (actually 14.04.4), but I am getting this
ERR_SSL_PROTOCOL_ERROR problem with Chrome Version 42.0.2311.90! No
problems with Firefox.

Chrome was installed from an old .deb on the hard disk. I tried
downloading chrome-stable-current but Google's download page is broken.

[Bug 1357093] Re: LVM or Encrypted install creates too small /boot partition

2015-08-30 Thread Hedley Finger
I have this problem but removing old kernels was only partly successful,
probably because I used rm and not apt-get method. In fact, if you have
a laptop, why use LVM at all? You are scarcely going to wander around
with an external hard disk attached to it for the extension to a logical
volume.

The installer needs to be a lot smarter about people's level of
knowledge re partitions and kernels, and give options for adjusting some
of the parameters, e.g. LVM v. normal partitions, size of /boot, guided
removal of old kernels, perhaps keeping three consecutive updates
(including the current working kernel).

I just went through a torrid attempt to use Gparted (doesn't recognise
LVM lv's) and system-config-lvm (which shows the swap and boot
partitions at one end of the sda5 red cylinder, and the logical view,
which shows them at the OTHER end of the blue cylinder).

I am totally lost in techhead space so am resorting to a new install to
fix this problem. I chose Ubuntu over Fedora, SuSE and all the rest
because it seemed the most novice-friendly, but this ordeal has proved
me wrong. 8^)

[Bug 1274320] Re: Error: diskfilter writes are not supported

2015-04-12 Thread Hedley Finger
I have a desktop Ubuntu 14.04.2 Trusty reinstalled (to fix multiple problems),
and this error also occurred for me. Only LVM installed, no RAID. At the moment
I just wait 5 s or press any key (but it still takes 5 s to resolve!).

I have also experienced this in 14.04 and the suggested solution fixed
it. You can also insert this line in a startup file whose name and
location I forget!

[Bug 1308798] [NEW] package secvpn 2.23 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2014-04-16 Thread Hedley Finger
Public bug reported:

This is similar to an earlier bug #160625 package secvpn 2.21 failed to
install/upgrade.

However, I am concerned that this previous bug is marked Won't fix. It
is extremely annoying because it appears whenever you try to
install/update/remove ANY package. And whenever it appears it raises a
doubt in your mind as to whether it is indeed secvpn or your actual
package (apache2, say) since the Ubuntu Software Centre just gives a
bland message without identifying the problem.

I have submitted this as a separate bug because I really, really want it
to be fixed so I can use Ubuntu Software Centre with confidence.

[Bug 19749] Re: SATA HDD not recognized during Breezy Colony 4 install or Dapper Flight 3 or Edgy Eft or Feisty Fawn

2007-12-29 Thread Hedley Finger
Can this bug be upgraded to critical?

I tried installing Ubuntu 7.04 from a liveCD/installer onto a Gigabyte
board GA-K8NNXP with a Silicon Image Sil 3512A onboard SATA controller
chip.

Initially the installer recognised only the ATA/IDE drives (all with
insufficient space), including a removable Zip drive, so I had to
disconnect all ATA drives to get the installer moving.

When the installer did start properly, once it got to the partitions
page, no drives were shown. I was attempting a dual-boot installation
on a Seagate SATA drive on which Windows is also installed (it is the
main disk).
