Well I tried to recreate the problem with Beryl active and whala. Everything

Note: My Beryl installation is above the desktop effects. Could this if fact be
the problem? Do you also have Beryl installed as a second application?

a friend of mine have had the same problem as erik, in the new menu.lst

[Bug 106912] Fiesty-Fawn intermittantly locks up when exiting Enemy-Territoryi

2007-04-15 Thread Mark
Public bug reported:

I've notice a few problems while running Enemy-Territory. Screen darkens
when screen saver time is up. I must recalibrate in the system setting
of the game. I select the recalibration Button and set the brightness to
the same setting and then apply. This fixes the problem for the same
amount of time as the first amount of time it took to happen. Most of
the time I just set the screen saver to the max 2hrs. and play until i
get tired of playing or the screen darkens and then I quit plying.
Hopefully I remember to reset the screen saver. Exit splash doesn't go
away even though it is ran as a full screen program. It shows as a
program window and the mouse will move but clicking on anything does
nothing (including Force Quit). I have to hit the reset button on the
front of my computer and reboot.

The -13 kernel burnt into the 7.04 beta live CD will not work, you
need to get kernel -14 or later.

Ar2ro:

Since edgy, ubuntu is now using libata in place of drivers/ide etc,
this means the handling of ide drives has changed very significantly.
Handling of hdds and cds/dvds has become more integrated.

Please check out bug 103410 which may be more what you are
experiencing and for some kernel related xfermode error see
http://www.mail-archive.com/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/msg03088.html

Cant help on the udev stuff unfortunately.

Tested under Feisty final - bug is still there - see my report
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/bluez-utils/+bug/32415/comments/113

Strongly suspect pure bluetooth problem as guesstimated in original bug
report here.

Amazing how long this bluetooth bug has sat around and was supposedly
"fixed" with the updated bluez package. Not!

Re: [Bug 103209] Re: not sure

2007-04-09 Thread Mark
I am not sure what program died. I had maybe 10 application windows
open (at least). I had been going through the KDE and gnome menus just
launching applications just to see what they did. I was also exploring
available applications through aptitude search and I was installing
applications that looked interesting. Then I noticed the icon that
indicated that a crash had occurred. After clicking on the crashed
icon, I discovered that their had actually been several crashes. At
one of the prompts I entered my email information thinking I might be
able to see what had crashed.

I went back through several of the applications to see if I could
recreate a crash. The only thing I found was in the KDE control
panel, in the administration group, the application that says it will
create some sort of image index crashes each time I select the option.
The error tells me to install a "gift" application. I followed the
link and I downloaded the latest gift source code. So far the code will
not compile without errors. I have not spent much time yet trying to
correct the errors.

I am not sure whether the crash information was a result of the KDE
control panel problem or something else. I would like to better
understand the Ubuntu software support process. I have 20+ years
experience in the computer field. Doing everything from programming to
hardware and software support. I have even managed several projects
that had 20+ developers involved. However, the way Linux and other
large open source projects control project scope and code quality
within a dispersed group of volunteers is amazing.

Anyway sorry for the long winded response. Let me know how I can help.

[Bug 103629] Re: [apport] ubiquity crashed with AttributeError in on_next_clicked()

2007-04-10 Thread Mark
Colin: Thanks

Evan: Thanks for responding. I wasnt trying to upgrade or reinstall, I
was trying to do a fresh install on /dev/hdb in a machine with a working
install on /dev/hda without using the LiveCD as the LiveCD kernel had a
bug in it which would not boot on my hardware. I would roughly explain
this as a "clone" install, install the base system on /dev/hdb and then
use the list of packages reported by dpkg from /dev/hda and then apt-get
install them on /dev/hdb. (loose references to devices may be confusing
). I will have to check that /dev/hda hasnt found service else
where but leave this bug as needs info and I will endeavour to report
back.

[Bug 96084] Re: boot - /bin/sh: can't access tty; job control turned off

2007-04-12 Thread Mark
Guido Scalise: you need to get a newer kernel seing as you are using the
LiveCD you need to get a new LiveCD :( or you could try disabling the
JMicron controller from BIOS and sticking with the intel SATA ports see
bug 84964 (havent tried myself) although you would need a SATA CD/DVD
drive to boot the LiveCD from. Which I didnt have and you dont appear
to have.

hap0: see comments to Guido

Dave Ritchie: dmesg from working 6.04? lpsci?

Master Ar2ro: I havent forgotten you, tomorrow is Friday after that its
the weekend and I should have some time to look at your hardware specs

[Bug 221499] Re: RTL8111/8168B does not work in Hardy

2008-07-23 Thread Mark
So let me get this right. The bug is in the Hardy Kernel and the fix is to use
a new kernel from an unstable release? May be we should change it from "LTS"
to "LTS except RTL8111/8168 users". I am sorry if I sound ironic but I was
waiting for Hardy LTS so that I could settle on one version for a year or two
and not keep updating.
I appreciate the need for the SRU procedures but when the fix involves the
replacement of the broken part (i.e. the kernel) is it really going to happen
in LTS.

[Bug 251408] [NEW] please fully configure trackpoints on installation

2008-07-24 Thread Mark
Public bug reported:

After a fresh install (Kubuntu Hardy 8.04.1) the trackpoint of my thinkpad is
never configured correctly. Correctly meaning the middle mouse button of the
trackpoint can not be used for scrolling. On the page
http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/How_to_configure_the_TrackPoint
it is described how to do this by adding a few lines in xorg.conf:
   Option "EmulateWheel" "on"
   Option "EmulateWheelButton""2"
   Option "YAxisMapping" "4 5"
   Option "XAxisMapping" "6 7"
Since it seems like the trackpoint is recognised anyway during installation, it
should not be such an act to do this automaticly.
Additionaly it would be great if the press-to-select-functionality (also
describe on the page) would be also enabled.

[Bug 245147] [NEW] hardy icons fail to redraw and system crawls nvidia-glx?

2008-07-03 Thread Mark
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nvidia-glx

Hardy

After running Firefox for a period of time, the icons on some
combination of the back/forward/refersh/home buttons disappear.
Sometimes the icons on the Firefox bookmarks tool bar disappear,
sometimes the icons for things on the desktop disappear, very frequently
the nm-applet icon in the notification area disappears.

Generally the only way to get the icons back is to run the mouse cursor
over the effected area, without clicking. For the nm-applet you have to
click.

Sometimes other weird rendering stuff happens, like the inset effect of
some text fields, google search in Firefox disappear.

I will attach photos showing what I mean.

Not sure if related but interesting stuff from the logs include.

[Bug 245928] [NEW] users and groups applet does not work as expected

2008-07-05 Thread Mark
Public bug reported:

I am trying to add ftp users to my system with the 'users and groups'
applet and it is not working correctly. When I try to add unpriveleged
users, i want all of them to have the same home dir '/home/fileserver'.
The applet refuses to let me do this. It says home dir already exists.
Also, when i try to select a shell of '/bin/false' the pulldown is
empty. I checked the /etc/shells and /bin/false is there. Why is the
list not populated with the data from /etc/shells?

Why is the users and groups applet so broken?

I guess I will have to use command line until this is fixed.

[Bug 174403] Re: 7.10 /usr/lib/cups/backend/hal failed

2008-02-09 Thread mark
I'm having similar problems.

Printer: Brother HL-5150D
OS: Fresh install of kubuntu 7.10 from the "alternative" disc (text install
method) - as downloaded 2008-02-09.

I'm getting various problems - they seem to be permission related.

The problem goes away when I do the following:

# cd dev
# chmod 777 usb* usb/*

I can now print. I was unable to add the printer until I did this.

As soon as I reboot, the problem returns. The problem must be with
hal/dbus setting the permissions wrong, and I'm sure I can fix it with a
bit more effort. I'm reporting this as a bug because it's a fresh
install, so I assume its not something I've done

Thanks,

Mark

I can sometimes reproduce if I try to umount /home from the terminal
rather than letting the shutdown scripts do it for me, e.g sync; then
/etc/init.d/nfs-kernel-server stop; umount /home

However sometimes the machine manages to shutdown on its own.

System appears responsive to Alt+SysReq+. but doesnt always give the
output expected.

Have twice gotten a backtrace out of the machine which looks like
(written down from photos);

Not sure if this is because I tried to umount the fs to help the machine
shutdown with Alt+SysReq+U.

Once I managed to get a list of running tasks which showed that only;

xfsbufd
rc
S40umountfs
S40umountfs

were running.

Any more information I can supply to help?

[Bug 156070] Re: "Failed Upgrade tool signature" when using do-release-upgrade

2008-02-12 Thread Mark
Ok, it was a while ago, but I think the reason I was getting this error
is because I had accidentally truncated my meta-release file, which I
had to create manually because it wasn't included in any package at the
time. I think it is included in newer releases.

[Bug 222793] Re: Can't connect to 2wire HomePortal 1000SW wireless network with WEP enabled

2008-05-30 Thread mark
I've been having the same problem, the upgrade to hardy caused wireless
connect attempts to reset the 2wire router. I also tried ndiswrapper
with no luck. I don't know if this info is helpful, but I have two
different machines here with hardy, different wireless cards, one 32 bit
and one 64 bit and both cause the router to reset.

[Bug 236422] [NEW] sansa mp3 players not mounted when plugged in

2008-05-31 Thread Mark
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 8.04 does not mount 2 of our sansa mp3 players when they are
plugged in. After plugging them in, absolutely nothing happens.
Before, when i ran Fedora 8, they were both detected and auto mounted.
I'm pretty sure something should happen when pluggin in a usb device
like this.

Interestingly enough, if i drop to command line and enter "lsusb", the
device will mount and Rythembox will open. The device is then mounted
in /media.

Why is it not being auto mounted? Seems like a bug to me.

[Bug 236422] Re: sansa mp3 players not mounted when plugged in

2008-06-01 Thread Mark
I rebooted machine with Sansa M350 installed. It was mounted after the
reboot was complete. I "ejected" it from desktop icon using right
click. I unplugged and waited 2 minutes. I plugged it back in and
waited 2 minutes. Then I collected dmesg and lsusb data as follows:

Dmesg is attached.

Once again, after the lsusb command, the player was mounted and
rythembox appeared.

[Bug 222793] Re: Can't connect to 2wire HomePortal 1000SW wireless network with WEP enabled

2008-06-05 Thread mark
I have been wondering if this problem has something to do with the
wireless driver module. My current module (with Hardy) is "b43.ko" but I
recall that it used to be "bcm43xx.ko" - could it be that this change
lead to the problem? I really don't know much about these things, but I
did try unsuccessfully to revert my driver back to the old one. I used
rmmod and insmod and the module loaded, but the wifi led did NOT turn
on, so I was unable to test this hypothesis. I'm curious though, if:

(a) anybody else is using b43.ko?
(b) anybody has an idea about how to make bcm43xx work again?

In case you are like me circa a few days ago, and don't know how to
check if you are using b43, you can type "lsmod | grep b43" in a
terminal - if nothing shows up, you're not.

[Bug 228633] Re: Ubuntu 8.04 Freezes

2008-06-28 Thread mark
Hi there,

I experience the same thing on the Acer TravelMate 4500. With "Fn F7" I
can switch off the touchpad and it does not happen again. I use an
external mouse instead of the touchpad.

Cheers,

[Bug 257343] [NEW] Kmilo-legacy should install properly configured

2008-08-12 Thread Mark
Public bug reported:

Kmilo-Legacy which installs the Kcontrol-module for Thinkpads does not come
properly configured. When installing it should
- Add the group nvram to the user
- change the rights, so that it is read/writable, as suggested in the
Kcontrol-module itself.
Furthermore it would be great if Kmilo-Legacy would be automatically installed
on detection of a Thinkpad.

[Bug 148701] Re: Search function in File browser does not function

2008-02-02 Thread Mark
Hi guys,

I originally reported this bug while occasionally flirting with Ubuntu A
QUARTER YEAR AGO. It's VERY disappointing to find out that this bug is
still there. We're not talking here about wrong font in help or bad
indentation somewhere. This is a search function for god's sake! I'm a
fan of Linux in a sense that I like to see it's getting more popular but
how is this sustainable if these blatant mistakes stay there? Very
disappointing :-/ I know this is not a forum but someone, please fix it!

Thanks,
Marek

I dont recall getting the crash when shutting down this way, the crucial
element (I suspect) being the sync between stopping nfs and unmounting

[Bug 156013] Re: No Sound from Speakers, but Headphones work

2008-03-10 Thread Mark
I also have a Presario 2700 Laptop and have been trying to get the sound
to output from my laptop speakers for weeks. I've tried everything I
could find in the forums, the help guides, etc. I've even recompiled
with ALSA Driver 1.0.16 using Module-intel8x0 from the alsa project and
still no sound. I've tried muting and unmuting all possible things in
the alsamixer. I've tried booting other linux live cd's and none of
them output sound from the speakers. What else can be done to fix this
bug. I'd be happy to try anything anyone has a suggestion to try.
Thanks.

p.s. I posted a question about this problem previously but never found
a solution that worked. Here's a link to that post:

[Bug 174403] Re: 7.10 /usr/lib/cups/backend/hal failed

2008-03-11 Thread mark
I managed to "fix" this one by doing the following (as root or with
sudo):

# dpkg -l | grep cups

remove all of the above listed packages with:

# dpkg --purge

then reinstalling cups:

# apt-get install cups

I think one of the packages I had installed (cupsys-hal perhaps) was
causing problems. After removing all packages cups related, and
reinstalling the minimum necessary to do the job, things started working
again.

I still consider this to be a bug - perhaps there is an undocumented
conflict happening.

Re: [Bug 191182] Re: 6.06.02 2.6.15-51-server soft lockup on cpu#0 on shutdown/umount xfs partition on /dev/md0

2008-03-27 Thread Mark
Looking at comment 0 the backtrace appears to be quite different? the
backtrace in link
http://www.uwsg.iu.edu/hypermail/linux/kernel/0603.0/0378.html in
comment 12 appears to be similar.

Is this fix going to appear in a 6.06 kernel or is it too close to
8.06 which I am planning on upgrading to when released anyway.

[Bug 173428] Re: [hardy] evdev mouse driver stops working

2008-03-27 Thread Mark
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 173833 ***

I can confirm this bug in my Hardy Beta setup.

My old Xorg mouse configuration that worked fine in Gutsy is now broken
in Hardy. My symptoms and Xorg log is similar to that of the initial
post.

[Bug 163047] Re: firefox: mouse pointer disappears while page is loading

2008-03-27 Thread Mark
I experience the same effects on Ubuntu Hardy Beta, using Mozilla
Firefox 3 Beta 4.

I am running an ATI card (fglrx) with AIGLX. The problem appears while
using both metacity and compiz.

Hitting the stop button on the browser usually makes the pointer behave
itself.

[Bug 251408] Re: please fully configure trackpoints on installation

2008-10-04 Thread Mark
But you still have to change something manually?
Would be great if developers would fix this. Does not sound like it would be a
big problem.
BTW: May be it is necessary to associate this bugreport with a different
package now. Does anybody know which one and is able to do this?

[Bug 280436] [NEW] X-Server crashes on start in Kubuntu

2008-10-08 Thread Mark
Public bug reported:

When I start Kubuntu Beta from CD in my Thinkpad R50e, I just see a
short moment of the KDE-splash-screen and this all over again. Seems
like the x-server is crashing and restarting in an endless loop.
Switching to Konsole prevents the crash and KDE is bootet, but crashes a
secound after switching back to KDE.

The thinkpad R50e is equiped with:

[Bug 254740] [NEW] 512000 in Decimal, convert to hex is wrong

2008-08-04 Thread Mark
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gcalctool

I was trying to convert 512000 in Decimal into Hex. The result was 7D.
When I converted this back, it was 512. This clearly is not the desired
behavior. Seems to be an issue with powers of 2. You can see the
result if you turn on the bit editor.

I was also in Fix mode if this helps.

Thanks,

Re: [Bug 254740] Re: 512000 in Decimal, convert to hex is wrong

2008-08-08 Thread Mark
For me this is reproducible every time I have tried. It is a bit
annoying. It is like the calculator removes the trailing 0's in hex mode..

Using the scientific calculator mode, I entered 512000 in decimal, then
switched the result to Hex. I got 7D, instead of the correct result
7D000. Interesting, if I enter 512001, then it shows 7D001 as the result.

I can try it on another system to see if I get the same problem there.

Perhaps there is something wrong with my version, and I should try to
reinstall..

2008-08-08 Thread Mark
Just noticed something else. I usually have the "bit editor" turned
on. I just tried it with the bit editor off, and I got the correct
result. Perhaps that will be a clue?
