[Bug 931877] Re: Task udevadm:X blocked at boot

2012-02-21 Thread Darius Shade
Update on the bug status, I tried using my hard drive with my other
computer and ubuntu booted perfectly, so the problem definitely lies
somewhere in the hardware/BIOS, though I have no idea how i would even
begin diagnosing the problem. Possibly the ACPI of my BIOS is broken,
though updating it does not seem to fix anything. Also, some possibly
relevant information is that my Windows installation is unable to shut
down. It will say shutting down, go to a black screen, and then sit
there, not cutting the power off, leading me to believe that my BIOS's
ACPI is definitely buggy/broken.

[Bug 931877] Re: Task udevadm:X blocked at boot

2012-02-15 Thread Darius Shade
I tested the latest 3.3-rc3-precise kernel, but the same hanging issue
still exists. However it seems to be no longer related to udev, but to
swapper and kworker (see attached). 1 message is shown about swapper
hanging, and another 5 or 6 are about kworker, all hanging the machine
for the exact same as the last kernel, and the acpi=off boot argument
still 'fixes' the problem and allows for a normal boot, but again not
having acpi on a laptop isn't good. I have found other bugs reporting
the same task * blocked for more than 120 seconds, however none of
them seem to be related to the boot process and therefore i am unable to
find a bug that this might be a duplicate of.

[Bug 931877] [NEW] Task udevadm:X blocked at boot

2012-02-13 Thread Darius Shade
Public bug reported:

The 3.0.0-16 kernel is unable to boot due to udevadm hanging. I'm dual
booting Windows 7 and Ubuntu 11.10 on my laptop, but when i try to boot
ubuntu, it drops to BusyBox complaining about giving up waiting on the
root device. ls /dev shows that the device file for my hard drive is not
there. Adding rootdelay=300 to the boot arguments allows my hard drive
to be seen after approximately 4 minutes and the boot can continue fine.
An inspection of /var/log/syslog shows that the udevadm task is being
blocked at boot for a long time (see attachment). It seems to be
related to ACPI as acpi=off allows me to boot normally, however any
other acpi boot options, such as acpi=ht, acpi=noirq, and so forth do
not fix the problem, and udevadm still hangs.

valgrind.log attached.

/Lars

2009/10/13 Lars Wirzenius l...@ubuntu.com

Could those having this problem please try to get a valgrind log?

 1. Open a terminal.
 2. Copy-paste the following commands to the command line (and do whatever
you need to do to get computer-janitor to crash while using it, but don't
worry if it doesn't actually remove packages):

 bzr get lp:computer-janitor/trunk
 cd trunk
 sudo env G_SLICE=always-malloc G_DEBUG=gc-friendly valgrind -v
 --tool=memcheck --leak-check=full --num-callers=40 --log-file=valgrind.log
 ./test-env ./computer-janitor-gtk
 sudo chmod a+r valgrind.log

 3. Attach valgrind.log to this bug report.

 Very much thank you.

 See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Valgrind for more information.

/Lars

2009/9/17 Lars Wirzenius l...@ubuntu.com

I think this bug, and all the bugs I've marked as duplicates of it, are
due to something going wrong in how the Computer Janitor background
threads use GTK+. I have not been able to figure out what it is, so
instead I've attempted to make sure they never use GTK+. I have made the
modifications and uploaded the new packages to my PPA at
 https://launchpad.net/~liw/+archive/ppahttps://launchpad.net/%7Eliw/+archive/ppa

Could all of you who have reported these problems try the
1.13.3-0ubuntu2~ppa1 version from my PPA and tell me if it works for
 you or not? Thanks.

I don't know wheter the problem exists in other languages, but there's
an incomplete polish translation in the context menu. If you select one

But doesn't it require other dependant packages from the gnome bunch? Well
anyways it would be nice to heve these localized without need to install
this package (in case it works, because i can't check it now)

[Bug 121894] Inkscape polish translation lacking in kubuntu

2007-06-23 Thread Shade
Public bug reported:

Usually I use Inkscape in my everyday graphics tasks, but it would be
nice to have it installed in my native language. Unfortunately it
appears that the application doesn't comply the polish translation when
installed in kubuntu. It seems that the problem connects to the kubuntu
systems only, since you can just copy an appropriate localization file
to get it running in any language user choose.

The file path is as follows:
/usr/share/locale-langpack/pl/LC_MESSAGES/

But it's highly desired to spare users no pains in the future kubuntu
releases

[Bug 112682] Kubuntu system settings applet uncomfortable for 1024*768 users

2007-05-05 Thread Shade
Public bug reported:

This one might be a duplicate of Bug #22846. It's still annoying though:

In Feisty (but it connects also with Edgy) if you enter the system-
settings applet, there are several windows out there, which are simply
nearly unusable for lower resolutions users, I'm using 1024x768 and i
have to scroll the windows content every time i want to install a
language support, or change the mouse settings etc. It isn't very
comfortable, but there's a plenty of free, unused space on these forms
which - i think - can be used smartly. Couldn't these windows be
shrinked a bit so as to make users use them without scrolling and
scrolling again? It seems it's everything allright with it in kcontrol,
but why not in systemsettings?

[Bug 96906] Kubuntu's wallpaper installer doesn't install packed wallpapers

2007-03-27 Thread Shade
Public bug reported:

As you know, there are plenty of wallpapers out there at kde-look.org.
Unfortunately when I am trying to get some of these, some of them works,
and some doesn't... It's because some of these are archived, and the
included downloading tool cannot cope with them. It is necessary to
manually unpack these to get it to your desktop. Otherwise these won't
show up, when you're in a desktop configuration section, despite of the

[Bug 65783] Could not update packages using adept_updater tool

2006-10-12 Thread Shade
Public bug reported:

I can't perform package updates via an adept updater tool since i get the error
message as follows: There was an error commiting changes. Possibly there was a
problem downloading some packages or the commit could break packages. This
error occurs every time i am about to patch the system updates. I've tried to
do it from CLI but it doesn't show any output after launching an adept_updater
from CLI.
I've started from kubuntu edgy beta cd, and then i performed a dist-upgrade
which went very smoothly, and gave no pain. The problem occured after applying
the updates.

I haven't changed anything in the sources.list - it's just like it was

showed in kicker, but after some time it simply dissapears without any
clear reason. It is also happen when i am trying to run an application
from the commandline/run command option, not only when i click it's
- icon. It's very iritating because I have to launch an application
+ icon. It's very frustrating because I have to launch an application
several times to make it finally running.

[Bug 51866] GRUB splashes doesn't work in Dapper

2006-07-04 Thread Shade
Public bug reported:

When I am trying to activate grub bootsplash image it doesn't show up
after reboot. I tried the kubuntu-grubsplash-images (or whatever it's
called). The package loads up the blue_neon bootsplash as default and it
works for me, but i when I am trying to change it to something else it's
either doesn't display anything or displays resized, and replaced image
with a reversed colours (real_colors_01.xpm.gz). The change only takes
effect when I manually edit menu.lst file. In other cases sudo update-
grub command gives the following output:

Searching for GRUB installation directory ... found: /boot/grub
Testing for an existing GRUB menu.list file ... found: /boot/grub/menu.lst
Searching for splash image ... found but preserving previous setting:
splashimage=(hd1,0)/boot/grub/splashimages/KUBUNTU_splashscreen_blue_neon_logo_03.xpm.gz
splashimage=(hd1,0)/boot/grub/splashimages/KUBUNTU_splashscreen_blue_neon_logo_03.xpm.gz
splashimage=(hd1,0)/boot/grub/splashimages/KUBUNTU_splashscreen_blue_neon_logo_03.xpm.gz
Found kernel: /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.15-23-k7
Found kernel: /boot/memtest86+.bin
Updating /boot/grub/menu.lst ... done

[Bug 51874] Nvidia legacy drivers doesn't work on newer kernel

2006-07-04 Thread Shade
Public bug reported:

I'm an user of an archaic NVIDIA Riva TNT2 Ultra. I've had the 3D
support running well with older kernel (...23), but when I've updated it
to 2.6.15.25, the x server fails to run. Do I need any patches to get
the 3D support back ?
