I have the same issue but on a Dell laptop, with NVIDIA GeForce GT 525M and Intel video card. On the Ubuntu 14.04 alpha and beta stages I didn't had any issue, but with the "stable" version xorg.conf is deleted after boot. The same issue I also have. Even when I have my external monitor connected the mouse pointer is flickering. I've managed to make the issue disappear! I've deleted from /home folder the .pulse folder. I've deleted some .* folders and files from some applications that I've used before and unistaled and now the system is OK (I hope). But I think that the problem was .pulse folder from pulse-audio. After deleting this folder my CPU was in the normal state. Looking inside the folder I've seen that were appearing some files and disappearing(like some services) very quickly! After restarting the PC the CPU is fine and also the memory! The idea is that the problem on my system was .pulse folder. Hello, I really don't know what is happening with my Ubuntu system. I've tried like you said with radeon.modeset=0 but is the same slow and heavy system. I've tried to kill, destroy, remove, explodethis polkit daemon but it's appearing every time. I've tried: start-stop-daemon -K -n polkit update-rc.d -f polkitd remove but after boot is still appearing! My cache memory is high and also the both CPUs are constant at 50%. After 30 min - 1hour the memory is full and the system is much more heavy than before. Maybe is because of general performance, maybe of other bug, but the idea is that I use Ubuntu from 8.04 version and I didn't saw this behavior before! After closing Firefox the memory was freed! But nevertheless my impression is that the system is working much more slower than 9.10. Could I done some more tests? Do you have any idea? Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg After entering in Lucid and opening for example Firefox my system is became very very slow. After closing the program the memory is not cleared. Hello Mr.Daniel T Chen, Thanks for your answer, I know that I have kernel 2.6.28 but the reason is that on the 2.6.31 my laptop is restarting/blocking bery often. I've asked on ubuntuforums.org if anyoane can help me but didn't received any answer. On 2.6.28 is OK but the sound is not working. On the 9.04 everything was fine. Now I'm not so happy upgrading to Ubuntu 9.10 :(.
