[Bug 433633] Re: [Karmic] Analog headphones insertion not detected / Speakers not mutted

2009-11-24 Thread Alan Nordman
I'm not really concerned about the headset canceling the speakers, but I
do have that same issue and it may be related to my real issue of audio
being scratchy for some applications. For example, when I reboot, and I
go to Sound Preferences - Input, my mic will be detected and if I talk
into it I can see the levels changing to reflect the talking - slightly.
Then, if I start a recording program like Sound Recorder, or if I start
an application like Counterstrike in Wine, the audio gets garbled and
the voice stops working. The only difference I have from the
instructions above is I was advised to put this line in alsa-base.conf:

options snd-hda-intel power_save=10 power_save_controller=N model=alc883
-6stack-dig

The problem seems to be that part of cat /proc/asound/card*/codec*:

  Unsolicited: tag=00, enabled=0

In Jaunty, when headphones are inserted, Pin-ctls: 0x40: OUT VREF_HIZ is
changed to Pin-ctls: 0x00: VREF_HIZ. In Karmic, it stays the same
whether headphones are inserted or not.

2009-10-16 Thread Loïc Martin
I'd like to change the description, since the situation has changed a
bit after updates, but Launchpad won't accept it Entity-body was not a
well-formed JSON document.

Here's how the description should now read:

Binary package hint: pulseaudio

Under Jaunty (and any previous Ubuntu releases), plugging headphones to
the headphone mini-jack out plug cuts sounds to the main speakers
(analog) and directs it to the headphone output instead.

In Karmic, that even is not detected, and the sound keep playing on the
speakers even though the headphones have been connected. The headphones
also have sound (since an update from the first time this bug was
reported, initially the headphones didn't get any sound) Manually use
the volume properties (right click on the sound iconPreferences) to
change the output to Analog Headphones mutes the sound for both
speakers and headphones.

[Bug 433633] Re: [Karmic] Analog headphones insertion not detected / Speakers not mutted

2009-10-16 Thread Loïc Martin
Sorry. Here's the result of ?field.comment=Sorry. Here's the result of the two
outputs, the only difference is there:
No headphones plugged:
Node 0x20 [Vendor Defined Widget] wcaps 0xf00040: Mono
  Processing caps: benign=0, ncoeff=17
  Processing Coefficient: 0xf012
  Coefficient Index: 0x01

Headphones plugged:
  Processing caps: benign=0, ncoeff=17
  Processing Coefficient: 0xc128
  Coefficient Index: 0x02

Coefficient Index just gets incremented each time I run cat, and
Processing Coefficient: changes between two cat commands even when
there's no changes in headphones plugged or not.

[Bug 433633] Re: [Karmic] Analog headphones insertion not detected / Speakers not mutted

2009-10-16 Thread Loïc Martin
I've run the same command in Jaunty, and it picks up what seems to be the
headphones plugged in information. Relevant differences:
Jaunty no headphones:
Node 0x14 [Pin Complex] wcaps 0x40018f: Stereo Amp-In Amp-Out
  Amp-In caps: ofs=0x00, nsteps=0x03, stepsize=0x27, mute=0
  Amp-In vals: [0x00 0x00]
  Amp-Out caps: ofs=0x00, nsteps=0x00, stepsize=0x00, mute=1
  Amp-Out vals: [0x00 0x00]
Pincap 0x373c: IN OUT HP Detect
Vref caps: HIZ 50 GRD 80 100
Pin Default 0x01014410: [Jack] Line Out at Ext Rear
Conn = 1/8, Color = Green
DefAssociation = 0x1, Sequence = 0x0
  Pin-ctls: 0x40: OUT VREF_HIZ
  Unsolicited: tag=00, enabled=0
  Connection: 5
