Do you think your present problem is the cause of that bug in Evince? I
don't expect so. The problem you mention in the report is an intended
behavior and has nothing to do with bug 305030 which comes from GTK+.

[Bug 246322] Re: nis package must provide DHCP client scripts

2008-12-30 Thread Mark Brown
You're missing the point with laptops and so on: these are use cases
that are already supported and can be broken by a poor DHCP
implementation. This is especially the case if your preferred
implementation with overwriting the configuration file were done - the
user configuration would be unconditionally deleted if they connected to
the wrong network.

Adding a DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE note doesn't really address the
problem: it's not really compliant with policy (users should be able to
do static configuration) and means that it becomes impossible to set any
configuration which is not offered over DHCP. You should do something
like have the DHCP configuration go in a separate file and source that
from the main configuration file.

[Bug 312648] [NEW] package samba 2:3.2.3-1ubuntu3.3 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess new post-removal script returned error exit status 132

2008-12-30 Thread Richard Corner
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: samba

I tried to set up shared folders through the Xubuntu UI (System Shared
Folders). I was prompted to install NFS and/or SMB, so I chose both. A
dependency problem with NFS was identified and it was left unconfigured.
I decided I didn't need NFS so uninstalled both nfs-common and nfs-
kernel-server through Synaptic. I could not get the Shared Folders
application to allow me to set up SMB alone, so I went into Synaptic and
tried to reinstall Samba. That reinstallation gave the current error.

[Bug 102921] Re: Moving the mouse cursor over the gnome-system-monitor temporarily causes network and disk usage to become zero

2008-12-30 Thread Kendrick
What I don't understand is how it can say something like 50% network in
use. If I'm on a 100MBps lan does that mean I am moving 50MBps. No,
certainly not. It could be an issue of scaling the graph. Maybe when you
mouse over the applet it looks back at what your capacity and usage is
and makes the graph of that. So we would likely see near zero percent.
Otherwise maybe it looks at peak traffic information and scales from
there, 50% of peak network usage. I think my main question is how does
it know how tall to make the graph of network usage given that I never
have even approached 100% of my network's capacity.

Relative novice ubuntu user. A brand new install of ubuntu 8.1 to a Dell
Precision Workstation 530MT dual intel xeon 1.7, 1 GB RAM (as per factory, but
with ATI radeon X800GTO graphics card upgrade). Graphics card using default
driver supplied with Ubuntu (not proprietary driver). After an hour or so,
notified of upgrades available via icon on top right of screen... so Iclicked
on this. Informed to run partial upgrade. Said OK. Informed subprocess
post-installation script returned error exit status 2. Could not install
'xlrunner-1.9' package. Continued. At 1 minute to go, notified of crash see
attached image Could not install the upgrades. The upgrade aborts now. Your
system could be in an unusable state. A recovery will run now (dpkg --configure
-a). After reboot, renotified of crash in xulrunner-1.9 and clicked button to
report and ended up at this website with the summary already filled in. Not
sure how to provide more information. Not sure if it is a bug, or some other
problem.
Reiterate, brand new install. I used CD with gparted to remove partitions,
made one new partition ext3. Then rebooted and reinstalled from 8.1 CD (without
running from CD first) ... followed all instructions. Used firefox, set up
email. Didn't install any new packages. Then did partial upgrade. Now here.

[Bug 234498] Re: Cannot uninstall irmp3 from system

2008-12-30 Thread VilleP
I can confirm this... I have exactly the same thing (subprocess new pre-
removal script returned error) which re-occurs with each sypnaptic run.

I reported it with [Bug 292046] 11/01/08 Michael Vogt asked for
more information (11/03/08) ... which I forwarded.

Jean-Baptiste Lallement closed the bug 11/22/2008
We are closing this bug report because it lacks the information we need
to investigate the problem, as described in the previous comments.
Please reopen it if you can give us the missing information, and don't
hesitate to submit bug reports in the future. To reopen the bug report
you can click on the current status, under the Status column, and change
the Status back to New. Thanks again!

** Changed in: update-manager (Ubuntu)

Still, the funny thing is that
a) the bug team got rid of 1 more bug (by closing it)
b) the problem still persists on my PC
c) I am not alone ;)
d) there were no previous comments as mentioned above.

Happy New Year everyone!

[Bug 303056] Re: Network Manager fails to bring up network in Intrepid

No, the /etc/network/interfaces file is the default:

{code}
and has not been edited since the clean Hardy install.

The machine has just been switched on after it Christmas holiday and it
behaved exactly the same: the network is not started on boot, I have to
login and run dhclient (and also hostname) manually, then manually mount
the filestores. After that everything is fine.

[Bug 269963] Re: [intrepid] network-manager should recommend or suggest dnsmasq

2008-12-30 Thread Bron Gondwana
Plus nm-applet really shouldn't segfault because it can't find the
binary. I was away from network connectivity (as you usually are when
you try to ad-hoc, otherwise you'd just both connect to the
infrastructure) when I tried this a couple of days ago.

Thankfully we are both experienced sysadmins who were happy to go nuke
the network-manager processes and iwconfig/ifconfig ourselves. Left a
pretty sour taste seeing nm-applet crash and disappear.

Dec 28 19:06:15 launde NetworkManager: WARN  start_sharing(): (wlan0): failed
to start dnsmasq: Could not find dnsmasq binary.

I ran nm-applet from the command line and it actually segfaulted when it
couldn't find dnsmasq. It definitely needs to fail gracefully.

ethanay: maybe the fix came from a newer kernel than the one you're

is specific to your hardware. Could you also check with an older kernel,
since you say it has reappeared? Finding the version/patch that brought

[Bug 297169] Re: mozvoikko depends on iceweasel, should depend on firefox

2008-12-30 Thread Heikki Mäntysaari
Thanks for your comments.

Mozvoikko works with both firefox-3.0 and firefox-3.1, so I added both
of these packages to dependencies.

However there is no abrowser-3.0 package in the repo (only abrowser-3.1)
but the version of abrowser package is 3.0.x so I added conflict to
abrowser (= 3.2). Also there is no package like iceweasel-3.1 in
Debian so I added conflict to iceweasel (= 3.2).

Do you accept this?

Hi. It is still a problem. Long time I looked at it, but as I remember I

All the other plugins have plugin-name.totem-plugin file which I
believe describes the plugin to totem, and that is why it doesn't turn

[Bug 312398] [NEW] Cannot print Tif from Gimp (through CUPS)

2008-12-30 Thread Åsmund Hjulstad
Public bug reported:

Printing tif (2904x2123 pixels) fails. I opened the same tif in document
viewer, and it printed a small image in the lower left corner of the page
(about 1/6th of full page size).

Attached is error_log from cups, with debug enabled. Ghostscript dies
with the following message (from error_log). The attached log shows two
print attempts, one successfull (from document viewer) one unsuccessfull
(from gimp).

[Bug 312399] [NEW] dns packets malformed

2008-12-30 Thread Robbie Matthews
Public bug reported:

I have seen this problem repeatedly. It seems to be a problem with
Ubuntu 8.10, particularly the X64 version.

Most commonly seems to affect wireless connections using a local server
for DHCP and DNS lookup.

Symptom:
Although NetworkManager has properly configured the wireless interface, and
correctly set up /etc/resolv.conf with the address of the router, DNS lookup
just fails. ping etc works, but only if you use the IP address (ie,
google.com=72.14.205.100)

Manually adding your ISPs nameserver to /etc/resolv.conf seems to fix
the problem (as far as getting you onto the internet) but it would
appear that this is in fact masking the underlying problem.

Using 'host google.com' as an example, this is the result of the dns
lookup request:

sudo tcpdump -i wlan0 -X -vvv -n -l -s 256 port 53
tcpdump: listening on wlan0, link-type EN10MB (Ethernet), capture size 256 bytes

As can been seen, the return packet has a source address of
192.168.0.255 ... which is wrong, and the address resolution ignores it.

Doing the same query and trace on a different computer on the same network
gives this result:
tcpdump: listening on ath0, link-type EN10MB (Ethernet), capture size 256 bytes

   0x0040: 2710 0004 4a7d 2d64 '...J}-d

This works just fine, the return package is properly formed.

It only appears to be a problem using the local router as a nameserver. Using
the ISPs nameservers, you can see the packets being properly formed.
Just to add complexity to the problem, if you take the interface up and down a
few times, the symptoms change.

It starts working after a fashion:

host returns a malformed message packet ... as can be seen from the
tcpdump trace below, the response packet is short:

 host -v google.com 192.168.0.1

Received 44 bytes from 192.168.0.1#53 in 10 ms

You're assuming that everyeone should have installed from scratch since hardy ?

Anyway, a package do not have to rely on history. It should work on its own.

By the way, it is not always possible to upgrade debconf (easily)

[Bug 272826] Re: Ubuntero inappropriate for female contributors

2008-12-30 Thread Raphaël Pinson
Juste a side note, although the issue has been fixed... It has been
considered that Ubuntero sounded Spanish. That's fine, but to me it also
sounds like Esperanto, which is more of a neutral language and pretty
wide-spread in open-source communities (you just have to see the
translations made in this language... it's hard to get Windows or MacOS
in Esperanto imo).

In Esperanto (and Ido by the way), Ubuntero would be a _neutral_ name,
as all names, while Ubunterulo would be the specific word for males and
Ubunterino the term for women.

My 2 cents ;)

[Bug 216990] Re: error in auth.log when switch user -- pam_smbpass.so

2008-12-30 Thread Loïc Minier
I need to note that if your /etc/pam.d/common-* config files were
modified locally, you will have to fix them manually and wont be
prompted to merge your changes with the new version as these files
aren't conffiles and the only logic in libpam-runtime.postinst is to
upgrade conffiles if their md5sum didn't change.

[Bug 312403] [NEW] Lenovo ideapad S10 internal microphone doesn't work

2008-12-30 Thread brianhanna
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: alsa-base

In Intrepid and Jaunty Alpha 2, the internal microphone on the Lenovo
ideapad S10 doesn't work.

After quite a bit of searching, I suspect this machine has a different
pin-out from other machines with the Realtek ALC269 codec.

Under Jaunty Alpha 2, I tried all of the options for model that I could
find in the alsa-base file.

Using options snd-hda-intel model=eeepc-p703 seemed to make the mic
work using sound recorder but caused other problems (such as no Master
channel to control speaker volume). In the default setup, everything
seems to work except the internal mic. The internal speakers work but
attempting to use the internal mic causes feedback through the speakers

Under Intrepid, even the keyboard hotkeys worked to control the volume.
This is broken under Jaunty alpha 2.

Expected behavior - internal speakers work and volume can be controlled
with keyboard hotkeys. internal speakers disconnected when headphone
plugged in and headphones work. Internal and external microphones work.

Please let me know if I can provide more info.

[Bug 238259] Re: Building amd64 module for virtualbox-ose fails.

2008-12-30 Thread undefined
SHORT ANSWER:
apt-get install virtualbox-ose-source linux-headers-$(uname -r)
BUILD_TARGET_ARCH=amd64 m-a -k /usr/src/linux-headers-$(uname -r) build
virtualbox-ose
dpkg -i /usr/src/virtualbox-ose-modules-$(uname -r)_*_amd64.deb

LONG ANSWER:
the problem, at least for virtualbox-ose-source 1.5.6-dfsg-6ubuntu1 in hardy,
is that debian/rules (lines 38-48) does not set ARCH correctly (ie ARCH set to
i386 instead of x86_64). see attached patch for possible fix.

on all my amd64 machines (two running debian etch and one running ubuntu
hardy; linux 2.6.22, 2.6.26, and 2.6.24 respectively) uname -m returns
x86_64. so line 40 (grep 86) evaluates to true and ARCH is set to
i386. neither of the two remaining tests (lines 43 46) are true
because module-assistant sets KVERS to 2.6.24-22-generic which doesn't
contain the architecture as a substring (ie 86 or amd64). so the
binary-modules rule calls the module's Makefile with ARCH=i386.

in the module's Makefile, on lines 18-40, if BUILD_TARGET_ARCH is not
already set, then ARCH (and uname -m if ARCH is not set, but not
applicable in our case) is used to set BUILD_TARGET_ARCH. since
ARCH=i386 is passed to the Makefile by debian/rules, the Makefile sets
the BUILD_TARGET_ARCH to x86. this eventually defines RT_ARCH_X86 in
the Makefile which causes 32-bit i386 assembly to be compiled with
SUPDRVShared.c (unsuccessfully with 64-bit amd64 assembler) which causes
the error and halts the build.

because in the Makefile BUILD_TARGET_ARCH is tested before ARCH and
debian/rules does not set BUILD_TARGET_ARCH, but ARCH, my hack is to
define BUILD_TARGET_ARCH (as amd64) when calling module-assistant.
but the more proper solution is to have debian/rules properly recognize
the arch from uname -m.

** Attachment added: patch for debian/rules to set ARCH=x86_64 based on uname
-m returning x86_64

[Bug 312391] Re: Evolution crashed on cahnge mail account settings

2008-12-30 Thread Nicolas Quenouille
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or
challenging to deal with as a .crash file. Please follow these
instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can
be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable
apport in /etc/default/apport and restart.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus
and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report
you wish to submit.
If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using
/usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a
terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more
efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

You didn't.

Anyway. When exactly did everything froze? (before downloading, while
downloading, after downloading, while installing, after installing, when
quitting package manager, when starting amarok, when quitting amarok)
Also your precise definition of froze would be very intersting. (did the
mouse move? did anything move at all? did your screen go black?).

P.S. writing a forum-like post doesn't get you any bonus points, in fact
it makes the work of the fellows who have to triage your report a lot

[Bug 122285] Re: thin-client-manager share screen error

2008-12-30 Thread Oliver Grawert
ha ! i knew there was a bug on this, but i couldnt find it anymore ...

---
thin-client-manager (0.5.1-0ubuntu6) jaunty; urgency=low

  * drop VNC support, it never worked properly, people should use italc for
advanced thin client management.
---

i took the ten minutes to rip out the whole VNC part so it at least
doesnt suggest anymore it could be used for sharing or viewing the
client screens... the remaining functions should work as advertised ...

[Bug 311860] Re: Auto-hibernate due to inactivity results in a resumed session with hanged gnome-power-manager preventing the system from entering hibernate again

2008-12-30 Thread jasonwc
WORKAROUND:

This issue doesn't arise if the system uses uswsusp rather than the
kernel's method of hibernation. So, the fix is to force gnome-power-
management to use s2disk rather than the kernel method. This is fairly
simple to do:

Download the attached script hal-system-power-hibernate-linux

sudo apt-get install uswsusp
sudo s2disk##Test to see if s2disk works. CAUTION: make sure data is
saved for this test!

sudo mv /usr/lib/hal/scripts/linux/hal-system-power-hibernate-linux
/usr/lib/hal/scripts/linux/hal-system-power-hibernate-linux.backup
sudo cp hal-system-* /usr/lib/hal/scripts/linux/
sudo chmod 755 /usr/lib/hal/scripts/linux/*

Now, gnome-power-manager should use s2disk to hibernate fixing my
reported issue.

Note: I found these instructions from
http://blog.paulbetts.org/index.php/2007/02/11/fixing-software-suspend-
hibernate-with-uswsusp-in-ubuntu-feisty-and-edgy/#comment-17671. The
only change I made was to modify the script to reflect the location of
the s2disk binary in Ubuntu 8.10.

[Bug 299944] Re: ldm should depend on gtk2-engines instead of gtk2-engines-clearlooks

2008-12-30 Thread Oliver Grawert
the clearlooks engine is used by the builtin default ltsp theme which is
used as a fallback. it must be installed in any case to provide a safe
fallback mechanism.

** Changed in: ldm (Ubuntu)
   Status: New = Invalid
