[Bug 674680] Re: Network manager drops, then re-establishes wifi connection every 2 minutes

2010-12-03 Thread Uwe Helm
i looked into this a little bit more and the driver is still fairly new and
uses a firmware blob from realtek.
updating the kernel won't help much, as the firmware is distributed within
ubuntu.
you could download the driver from realtek (there is a new version from
2010/10/25) and compile it yourself, there are instructions on how to do it on
Fedora here:
http://www.linwik.com/wiki/using+the+realtek+8172+and+8192se+wireless+controller+with+fedora+12
let me know if you need help with it

[Bug 608685] Re: bind9 fails to start in Lucid Lynx, can't read openssl.cnf

2010-12-03 Thread Nicola Ferralis
Actually there is another way. For some reason unknown reason, a
previous installation of bind installed a folder "named" in /var/lib
that somehow was creating problems. Uninstalling bind9, removing the
/usr/lib/named folder and reinstalling bind9 worked just fine. Therefore
please disregard my previous comment (#5).

Re: [Bug 51043] Re: ListView - Context-menu options missing when pointer is above files/folders

2010-12-03 Thread thet
What you are complaining about applies to closed source. Ever tried to
convience microsoft to fix anything?
The open source model is superior to any other - IMO. Most of development
happens for customer projects because OS devs also have the neeed to make a
living.

Are you using gnome or any other OS software at all?

- Original message -
@wribeiro:

They won't. That's why open source software sucks. Someone or some
people start a project and then release something which is full of bugs
and then they have some great ideas they want to work on and start
developing those great features, but they don't like to fix bugs and
because it's open source the developer(s) just say: "It's open source,
so fix it yourself if it's bothers you."

I hate that mentality of open source developers. They only care about
the features they want to see implemented, but they really don't care
about fixing bugs, even if those bugs still aren't fixed after ten
years. The bugs don't bother them, so they just don't fix them. If you
want them to be fixed, then you'll have to do it yourself.

Do they really think everyone has programming skills? Besides that: If
you develop something, then release something usefull or don't release
anything at all. If you don't want to listen to your users and don't
care about fixing bugs, then just keep the software and code for
yourself. Just use it on your own computer and don't release anything at
all. Only release your software to the public if you're willing to
listen to the people who use it and are willing to fix the bugs they
report.

[Bug 684601] [NEW] System hangs on resume while connecting to network

2010-12-03 Thread Michael Wayne Goodman
Public bug reported:

I am running Ubuntu 10.10, but this problem has been around since Lucid,
and maybe Karmic. I apologize that I don't know in what package the bug
lies.

When I resume my laptop (Thinkpad X61-t, 64bit) from suspend, the system
freezes either at the login screen or immediately after logging in.
During the freeze, I can move the mouse cursor, but neither clicking nor
keypresses have any effect, and animations (e.g. nm-applet's icon) also
stop. The system "thaws" (becomes responsive again) 10-20 seconds later.

My guess is that the freeze occurs while attempting to connect to the
wireless. Further, it may be when it attempts to a different wireless
network than the one it was on when it was suspended (as it appears the
bug does not occur when I suspend and resume in the same room (e.g. if I
try right now)). It also may be caused by something related to network
connections, as I occasionally have a responsive system while it is
connecting, then freeze AFTER nm-applet reports that I have connected to
a network.

I apologize for all the guesswork. I'd be happy to try and debug,
collect logs, etc., if someone could point me in the right direction.

This bug seems similar to
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/673168, so it might
be a duplicate, except that it occurs for me on wireless connections
rather than cable (I haven't tested cable connections), and I don't see
any noticeable effect concerning the pressing of keys.

[Bug 683668] Re: file command in 10.10 produces wrong message

2010-12-03 Thread Robert Roth
@latimerio: the description you have given (data being compressed with
'compress')
1. is in a continuous tense, which is not the best thing (although I'm not a
native English speaker), and contains the word compress twice... if we tolerate
that, we could say "data compressed with 'compress'"
2. also contains the ' character, so that will still mess up your output
parser, I think

Keyboarb switcher panel applet does not retain the keyboard I add during
a normal Xfce session.

1) I added the keyboard applet to a panel
2) The applet stays put after restarts. Fine, normal.
3) I right-click it and go to Properties.
4) I Add a new keyboard layout (US wit Euro on 5).
5) Manage layout as Globally.
6) I close the properties window and go about my business. Great.
7) The keyboard switcher works as expected (i.e. really great tool).
8) I shutdown the computer and boot later.
9) I go to change my keyboard layout temporarily for my friend to type and BUG:
There's only the single, original keyboard layout available. No switching.
It's as if I never added the additional layout. I have to re-add it each time

Subject: [Bug 683668] Re: file command in 10.10 produces wrong message

@latimerio: the description you have given (data being compressed with
'compress') 1. is in a continuous tense, which is not the best thing
(although I'm not a native English speaker), and contains the word compress
twice... if we tolerate that, we could say "data compressed with 'compress'"
2. also contains the ' character, so that will still mess up your output
parser, I think

Status in "file" package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: file

in 10.10 the file command for a compressed (gzip) file says:
 ... compress'd...
The apostroph in here is completely wrong to me.
It messed up things in my output parser and it should say compressed
instead of compress'd as in previous versions of ubuntu.

[Bug 684620] [NEW] Don't start after 10.04->10.10 upgrade

2010-12-03 Thread O. Bender
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gozerbot

1) $ lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 10.10
Release:10.10

2) Tried both 10.04 and 10.10 packages (i tried to downgrade gozerbot package,
it didn't help):
Ubuntu.10.04.repository/pool/universe/g/gozerbot/gozerbot_0.9.1.3-4_all.deb
Ubuntu.10.10.repository/pool/universe/g/gozerbot/gozerbot_0.9.1.3-4_all.deb

3) I expected it (script in /etc/init.d) would start after upgrade.

4) It didn't start.

Logs were rather silent:
$ tail -5 /var/log/gozerbot.log
[2010-12-02 15:58:55,904] (GOZERBOT) STARTING VERSION 0.9.1.3

[Bug 684372] Re: Sabayon linux downloads fine

2010-12-03 Thread Robert Roth
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we cannot work on this bug because your
description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful
to read "How to report bugs effectively"
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

[Bug 612082] Re: optparser attribute missing in cli.py

2010-12-03 Thread Daniel Holbert
I had this exact problem, and I just figured out what was going wrong.

It turned out to be that I'd passed a nonexistent file to "--part" in my
vmbuilder command. (In the bug-reporter's case -- I'm not sure whether
--part accepts relative paths or not, but if you're sure that
vmbuilder.partition exists, you might try specifying the *full path* to
that file.)

So as I understand it, this problem arises from user error in specifying
the "--part" argument. HOWEVER -- there is still a bug here -- the
vmbuilder script tries to be helpful with a warning message, but it ends
up falling over and dying because it tries to print the message via a
nonexistent attribute. So instead of a warning message, the user gets a
cryptic exception backtrace.

** Summary changed:

- optparser attribute missing in cli.py
+ optparser attribute missing in cli.py (warning-message-printing fail when
--part is given a nonexistent file)

My python-fu is not strong, but from looking at the rest of the cli.py
file, I think we want "self.optparser", not "hypervisor.optparser".

Testing that to see if that fixes it locally...

self.optparser didn't work -- tried that because there was one other usage of
that in the file, but it gives me
>AttributeError: 'CLI' object has no attribute 'optparser
So the existing "self.optparser" line is probably just as busted as this bug's
"hypervisor.optparser" line. :)

Trying just plain "optparser" now, since that's used many more times
elsewhere in the file...

[Bug 684644] [NEW] dh_python2 can generate postinst that crashes pycompile

2010-12-03 Thread Michael Vogt
Public bug reported:

When moving update-manager from python-central to dh_python2 it found that it
geneated a incorrect postinst
for the auto-upgrader-tester. That package contains a private directory with
source files that are run as part of
the auto-upgrade tests. From that it generated:

#!/bin/sh
set -e

# Automatically added by dh_python2:
if which pycompile >/dev/null 2>&1; then
pycompile -p auto-upgrade-tester
fi

if which pycompile >/dev/null 2>&1; then
pycompile -p auto-upgrade-tester /usr/share/auto-upgrade-tester -V -
fi

# End automatically added section

The "-V -" make pycompile coke with a error:
Traceback (most recent call last):

Re: [Bug 684431] Re: hard to get to terminal menubar when not full-screened

2010-12-03 Thread Mark Shuttleworth
Hi Serge

Good news and bad news.

The good news is, we think Firefox might get its menu working nicely
with our panel in time for Natty. Mozilla have appointed someone to do
this for Thunderbird and the likelihood is FF will "just work" as well,
or we can close the gap where needed.

The bad news is, focus-follows-mouse just doesn't work well with global
menu. There is a proposed design from MPT to address this, and a patch
implementing that would be accepted as a first cut to evaluate the design.

Mark

[Bug 650498] Re: Expansion: 'ẞ' LATIN CA PTIAL LETTER SHARP S (U+1E9E)

2010-12-03 Thread Bruno Maag
Gerhard: I am well aware of how the eszett is applied and how the
preceding vowel is pronounced. I had to learn the eszett rule, and its
many exceptions for four years, one hour a week as part of my training
as a typesetter thirty years ago. I understand that the meaning of the
word changes dramatically depending on pronunciation. However, in your
example one is a noun (Floß), the other a verb. I put it to you that no-
one would really have any problems differentiating the two. The same
goes for 'Maße' and 'Masse' - one in plural, the other in singular.
Don't forget that we do read in context. Anyway, although I haven't
changed my opinion on the relevance of the ß, I accept that I can't
change the habits of two entire nations. :-)

Thorsten: I agree that we have to create a glyph that has relevance to
what two nations are used to, rightly or wrongly. However, I believe
that within these parameters we have a duty to create a form that is in
harmony with all the letter surrounding it. In fact, that is the primary
challange of typeface design, to make sure all the glyphs work together
in whatever combination. Of course, we also have to accept that there
will be situations that simply cannot be created in the most perfect way
- for these we have to step back and compromise.

Dalton Maag has indeed been commissioned by Canonical to create this
suite of fonts but that does not mean that we have to blindly follow
what we are told is the best solution. I personally, have 30 years of
typography and type design experience, my senior colleague Ron Carpenter
has created letterforms for over 40 years. We know our stuff and it is
my professional duty, as a designer, to explore the best possible
outcome for the design. And if that involves investigating solutions
that are unacceptable, so be it. But the investigation has to be done,
in any case. To suggest that we do the experimentation on our own dime
and simply provide the mediocre accepted form is, IMO, deeply
unprofessional. I have started to sketch and have gone through a number
of designs. From this initial research I can tell you that the end
result is unlikely to differ radically from the the forms that have been
discussed.

[Bug 684649] [NEW] Nautilus desktop icons should never be under the launcher

2010-12-03 Thread Didier Roche
Public bug reported:

Nautilus desktop icons should not be allowed below the launcher (with or
without the autohide mode). That will avoid flickering when people wants
to switch between the two modes.

Same reasoning will go then for preventing nautilus resizing itself when
the launcher is not in autohide mode. It should just crop the wallpaper
(and thus, not reacting to _NET_WM_STRUT).

[Bug 684648] [NEW] [Kubuntu] Firefox desktop shortcut crashed whole system

2010-12-03 Thread Kupfer
Public bug reported:

I installed Kubuntu 10.10 on a DELL Latitude D620 to use for someone who
is a novice user only wanting to use the Internet. For this purpose I
removed all plasma widgets from the desktop. I only wanted to have one
big shortcut of Firefox on the desktop to make it easy for the beginner
user. I placed the shortcut on the desktop and began to resize it. As
the original firefox icons resolution is relatively small it looks bad
when made bigger. I wanted an icon that is sharp, even bigger. I
downloaded a firefox logo png (256x256 size) and added it with the Menu
Editor to the Firefox shortcut in the Kicker Menu. Then from the Kicker
Menu I chose the option of having it placed on the desktop too. I
started to resize the shortcut and made it much bigger. As I
experimented with the size, the screen suddenly went all black...

It stayed black for a few seconds then logged me out. When trying to log
back I get a black screen and the KDE cursor turns to an X - and then
the system quickly logs me out again. Since the crash while trying to
resize the Firefox shortcut I cannot login to Kubuntu. When I restart it
tries to login by itself (as it should, as I chose the option of logging
the user in automatically when I installed the system), but after
approx. one-two seconds of a full black screen it throws me back to the
login screen. If I tried to login by hand, the result is the same.
Shutting off, restarting - nothing works. Always the same symptom.

When I'm starting the system in recovery mode and choose the option failsafeX
then Kubuntu is unable to get to the desktop.
I get the message:

(EE) FBDEV(0): FBIOPUTCMAP: invalid argument

I get this message like three dozen times

and also the following messages once:

/etc/gdm/failsafeXinit: line: 184: zenity: command not found
/etc/gdm/failsafeXinit: line: 47: zenity: command not found

waiting for X server to shut downddxSigGiveUp: Closing log

All I did was trying to make a very big shortcut for Firefox (approx
256x256 like the png for it) on my desktop and Kubuntu crashed
completely. When I did the same in OpenSuse 11.3 it had no effect, no
crash.

[Bug 612082] Re: optparser attribute missing in cli.py (warning-message-printing fail when --part is given a nonexistent file)

Here's the patch as described above. Just passes the "optparser"
variable to set_disk_layout, and uses it to print the error instead of

[Bug 677899] Re: Ubuntu 10.10 freezes on shutdown and restart

2010-12-03 Thread raymonds0528
I see this every single time i use the power menu when logged in to do
the shutdown, this is very consistent behavior (9 out of 10 times)

If I select logout and let ubuntu log me out first, I can then choose
shutdown from the log in screen and the system halts properly.

[Bug 672424] Re: MusicBrainz ID tags not written to ogg files

2010-12-03 Thread James Henstridge
Looking at the source code, the code for writing the UUIDs is only
enabled if HAVE_MB_EXTRACT_UUID is set, This is an autoconf check that
is set if the mb_extract_uuid() function is available.

That function appears to have been added in libmusicbrainz 3.0.3, while
Maverick contains 3.0.2.

[Bug 684654] [NEW] system hangs due to blocked filesystem tasks

2010-12-03 Thread Andrew Schulman
Public bug reported:

Every few days, a relatively disk-intensive task such as

find -type d -print0 | xargs -0 chmod u+s # or
cvs up

will cause my system to hang. The filesystem (reiser4 on /home) becomes
blocked, with more and more processes piling up messages like:

Dec 2 10:20:22 helium kernel: [192960.871307] INFO: task reiserfs/1:1065

Once this happens the host becomes unresponsive to console input or ssh
connections, although it does continue to pass network traffic, at least
for a while. It eventually has to be force-rebooted.

This bug is similar to #494476. The effect of it is pretty severe, and
I'd greatly appreciate a solution.

Thanks,
Andrew.
