[Bug 1377585] Re: Very slow listing and scrolling a PTP connected photo directory.

2016-11-29 Thread b3nmore
I believe this is related to thumbnail handling. It seems that thunar
recreates the thumbnails on every scroll event. So if one disables 'Show
thumbnails' in the preferences, scrolling is very fast. This behavior is
also found for mtp connections.

[Bug 1623385] [NEW] Suspend on lid close can not be configured individually for battery/AC

2016-09-14 Thread b3nmore
Public bug reported:

Xfce power-manager allows to configure individual actions for the lid
close event for battery and AC mode. However, if one is set to suspend
the system suspends always despite it might be configured otherwise for
the current state.

I believe this happens because xfpm unconditionally removes the handle-
lid-switch inhibitor. Instead xfpm should check the power mode
(battery/AC) and only remove the inhibitor if it is actually configured
to do so for the current power mode. Of course this check must be
repeated on every change of the power mode.

Test case:
On eg. AC mode set the lid close action for battery mode to suspend and for AC
mode to eg. lock screen.
systemd-inhibit --list shows that the handle-lid-switch inhibitor is removed.
Closing the lid in AC mode consequently lets logind handle the event, which
defaults to suspend.

I get this on all up-to-date xubuntu 16.04 installations.

[Bug 812519] Re: Tumblerd used all available memory and swap

2013-11-23 Thread b3nmore
Same on 12.04.3 with tumbler 0.1.24 when thunar lists a folder with a
growing video file.

There are some upstream fixes, that might address this issue (e.g.
https://bugzilla.xfce.org/show_bug.cgi?id=8094). If so, it might be
worth backporting/upgrading tumbler in precise.

2013-11-24 Thread b3nmore
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected saucy

** Description changed:

I'm trying to enable a reliable hibernate/resume cycle on a intel haswell
cpu/gpu system with ubuntu 13.10 +xfce. Until now I've failed, because I get
three possible outcomes, when resuming (without seeing any pattern). In all
cases pm reports, that 'Image restored successfully'; visible on tty1.
  Resulting system states after resume:
  i) resume just works fine, everything is o.k
ii) X freezes, screen is completely black, mostly no reaction to key strokes
(i.e. can't change to ttyX), but ssh is possible
iii) like ii) but network is not reachable (I'd say a complete freeze)

- From situation ii) I got a dmesg (attached), which makes me think, that
- intel gpu driver is to blame.
+ From situation ii) I got a dmesg (attached), which makes me think, that intel

[Bug 1254261] Re: xhci regression: usb 3.0 hdd disconnects immediately

2013-11-28 Thread b3nmore
As a last resort I upgraded the bios/uefi of the mainboard (B85M-G BIOS
0410 -> B85M-G BIOS 0703) and now it works.

Funny though, that 3.2 managed to circumvent whatever the bios messed
up. Anyway, sorry for the noise.

[Bug 1250498] Re: 8086:0412 [Asus B85M-G] No video output after 2nd resume from hibernate

2013-11-29 Thread b3nmore
No changes at all.

I tested the saucy 3.11 kernel and the 3.13rc1 mainline kernel: After
the second resume the screen shows the progress of the resume and then
goes into powersave. The system is, apart from the failing video output,
fully functional.

The attached kernel logs were made from resume attempts in single user
mode.

2013-11-30 Thread b3nmore
> b3nmore, did this problem not occur in a release prior to Saucy?

Can't really tell, I bought it recently and started directly with saucy
or trusty respectively. However, I started my old precise 3.2 32bit
installation from my previous system (amd athlon xp, nvidia gpu), mainly
because I was curious , if it would boot at all. Funny enough it did,
but it used the framebuffer to display the video output, due to a
problem loading the intel_agp module. And I could hibernate/resume
several times.

I'm going to install precise and report back what happens.

2013-12-01 Thread b3nmore
In precise with kernel 3.8.0-33 resume works. I ran it 3 times to be
sure. It's weird (or maybe not), according to
https://01.org/linuxgraphics/downloads/2013/2013q1-intel-graphics-stack-
release full haswell support was reached with 3.8.2.

However the lts-saucy kernel in precise (3.11.0) chokes on the 2nd
resume with the known warnings.

[Bug 1250498] Re: 8086:0412 [Asus B85M-G] No video output after 2nd resume from hibernate

2014-01-02 Thread b3nmore
In the original bug description I mentioned, that resume may also result in a
complete system freeze (no more ssh, hard reset necessary). I believe, I found
out how to trigger it: it depends on whether the power is cut completely during
hibernation.
The situation is now:
i) computer stays plugged to the main during hibernation -> first resume
succeeds, second fails (as discussed)
ii) computer is cut off from main (e.g. power supply cable pulled) -> first
resume results in a complete freeze (shortly after hibernation image is
restored to 100%)

As a side note: from watching the console log during resume, I would
say, that the system fails on the same resume stage in either of the
above mentioned cases.

2014-01-02 Thread b3nmore
I've tested 3.9.11 again against the new test case: resume works as long as the
power supply cable stays plugged and fails if the power supply is cut off
completely.
That means, in my case resume from hibernate is broken for all kernel version,
if the pc is disconnected from the mains during hibernation.

[Bug 1212142] Re: Slow shutdown/restart on saucy with sendsigs waiting 10 seconds

Looks like some sort of race condition. If you add a sleep 2 after the

[Bug 1248948] [NEW] lightdm gets confused after multiple login/logouts

2013-11-07 Thread b3nmore
Public bug reported:

Got this on xubuntu 13.10:
When I logout and login again and start gdmflexiserver (or any other dbus call
to displaymanager), the screen turns black with the mouse cursor still visible.
The session is still running since I can terminate it by executing 'blindly'
the normal logout process.

A fishy side aspect: When i switch to ttyX via ctrl+alt+fX and login,
the username AND password is also written to .bash_history of the user
with the crippled X-session(if he left a shell open with focus). So you
might want consider this as a security issue.

[Bug 1184262] Re: [logind] times out too early, stuck in PrepareForSleep, causing network and other services to not resume

2013-11-07 Thread b3nmore
Finally I could reproduce this issue, even with systemd-shim from #73
installed. Attached is the system dbus monitor log of a hibernate/resume
cycle, where nm wasn't awoke.

It seems to me , that (at least in my case) the duration of the
hibernation period plays a role, i.e. I could only reproduce it, if
resume takes place a few hours after hibernation.

[Bug 1184262] Re: [logind] times out too early, stuck in PrepareForSleep, causing network and other services to not resume

2013-11-07 Thread b3nmore
I ran another hibernate/resume cycle directly after the failed cycled
documented in the previous post, leaving nm in its unconnected state.
After resume, nm managed to connect to my wifi as it should.

That was my first thought too, when trying to find reproducible
conditions. But in my case 30 minutes are definitive not long enough
(just tested it). I would even say the hibernation period must be longer
than 1h (not tested thoroughly).

Btw, at which point in the hibernation/resume cycle does the timeout
start counting?

[Bug 1248948] Re: lightdm gets confused after multiple login/logouts

2013-11-08 Thread b3nmore
It seems lightdm tries to open the new session at vt7 (where the orignal
xsession is already running) instead of a vt8 (or whatever is unused).
It partially succeeds, resulting is this weird state, where parts of
both, original xsession and lightdm, are displayed and input is shared.

[Bug 1250498] [NEW] haswell, X may freeze after resume

2013-11-12 Thread b3nmore
Public bug reported:

>From situation ii) I got a dmesg (attached), which makes me think, that
intel gpu driver is to blame.

Starting a xserver with vt7, when there is already a xsession running on
vt7 is a bad idea. Should this be even possible at all? Anyway, I think
we should make sure, that either lightdm starts X with a correct vt-
number or let X choose a vt number.

[Bug 1313682] [NEW] Can't hide entries sourced from /usr/share/applications/kde4/

2014-04-28 Thread b3nmore
Public bug reported:

Menu entries sourced form /usr/share/applications/kde4/ can not be
hidden using menulibre. When restarting menulibre, it lists two entries
of the modified one (the original and the overwrite in .local) and the
menu still shows the entry (but only one).

I've tested it with several entries from /usr/share/applications/kde4,
so I guess its reproducible with every application storing its .desktop
file in this directory.

[Bug 1171411] Re: 8086:2a42 [Lenovo ThinkPad T400] xfwm4 displays window borders visually glitched

2014-04-28 Thread b3nmore
Ok, thats weird: I still get the striped borders occasionally on a fully
updated trusty, but only when I use the Greybird-compact xfwm4 theme (or so it
seems). I replaced therefore all the left-*, right-*, bottom-* xpms of the
theme with those of the normal Greybird theme and didn't see striped borders
anymore.
It seems, that the intel driver with sna enabled chokes some times on the
repeated use of those particular pixmaps.

As suspected its caused by the light-locker integration. More
specifically by xfpm_update_logind_handle_lid_switch in xfpm-settings.c:

logind-handle-lid-switch = true when: lock_on_suspend == true and
(lid_switch_on_ac == suspend or lid_switch_on_battery == suspend)

[Bug 1531902] Re: Stopping cups-browsed.service may stall shutdown/reboot

2016-05-13 Thread b3nmore
I could not reproduce it either since a while (thats, why I didn't sent
any debug logs). So I concur, that it got fixed by some update.

[Bug 1521586] Re: Frame shadow of gtk3 application is not transparent for mouse clicks

2016-04-05 Thread b3nmore
So, its not the shadow actually, which would have been weird in the
first place. But some apps (I would say gtk3, csd; eg. gnome-calculator,
gnome-software) show a different behavior concerning window border
grabbing (for resizing). Windows, which can be resized, change the
cursor the discussed area next to the window border and can be resized.
This behavior is probably also applied to windows, which can not be
resized, like gnome-calculator or the indicator menus. Thus leading to
the several pixel wide region near window borders, where mouse clicks
are not interpreted as, well, clicks.

If the border grabbing margin is intentional (although it leads to an
inconsistent behavior between different apps), then it should be
disabled for windows, which are not resizeable.

I should mention, that I get this issue only with enabled compositing in
the wm. In my case with xfwm or mutter (cf. attached screenshot).

[Bug 1532180] Re: Amaroks Wikipedia applet does not work anymore, due to Wikimedias API-change for https://

2016-04-07 Thread b3nmore
Fedora fixed this in June 2015. If a read their solution correctly (
https://pkgs.fedoraproject.org/cgit/rpms/amarok.git/commit/?id=fa50109140fa4482bbd1ced79ed4daf440f568ee),
it's just a matter of pulling in the upstream commit mentioned in the
op.

[Bug 1575708] [NEW] Firefox 46 works only with fresh profile

2016-04-27 Thread b3nmore
Public bug reported:

A freshly updated firefox (to 46) does not work anymore if there is
already a firefox profile. Basically everything is broken: sessions,
menus even browsing by typing in a web address.

As a work around (sort of), one can delete the profile (~/.mozilla) and start
fresh ... and lose all settings, extensions etc.
Or downgrade until this is fixed.

I get this issue on two machines running a fully updated xubuntu trusty.

[Bug 1575708] Re: Firefox 46 works only with fresh profile

2016-04-27 Thread b3nmore
Ok, this is somehow extensions related. Starting with --safe-mode
results in a working version.

In my case I pinned it down to the firetray addon. Since it is
unmaintained, I guess this is a won't fix.

Currently I've removed the intel xorg package to exclude some gpu
crashes, but this does not seem to have any influence, so I guess it is
really a kernel bug.

Previous kernels under trusty resumed flawlessly up to 4.2 (lts-wily),
4.4 (lts-xenial) also produced system hangs after resume.

[Bug 1521586] Re: Frame shadow of gtk3 application is not transparent for mouse clicks

2016-03-31 Thread b3nmore
This affects gtk3 indicator in Xubuntu (xfwm or mutter as wm). Usually
the black borders in the attached screenshot are transparent shadows,
but it represents exactly the area which is sometimes not clickable.

To reproduce:
* click a gtk3 indicator
* hover over the expanded indicator menu
* try to click the indicator or any neighbors
=> only clicks in the upper ~1/3 of the button show a reaction, the lower 2/3
do nothing.

The same thing happens with some gtk3 window shadows, e.g. the gnome
calculator: Underlying windows cannot be brought into focus near the
window border in the shadow area.
