Here is an easy way to upload pictures to Image Shack(a free image sharing
site, if you don't know already) right from your desktop.

1) Install the package "python-pycurl".

2) Install PyShare Nautilus script form here-
http://www.gnome-look.org/content/pyshare

3) Extract it and copy the folder contents to .gnome2/nautilus scripts
folder in /home.

4) After that, when you right click on an image, there is an option to
upload to ImageShack(Scripts--->
SendFiles). It will also give the link after uploading.

[ubuntu-in] My webcam 041e:0405f does not work in Hardy

2008-03-26 Thread Mohan Dasaratha Rao
Hi Onkar,
'I am sorry that I did not give more information. I thought that my device
number 041e:0405f would be sufficient. It is a Creative Live Webcam. I had
to download driver file os511 from a dedicated website for this purpose in
Fiesty version.
http://www.rastageeks.org/ov51x-jpeg/index.php/Main_Page
Now, this site has an upgraded driver version for Hardy. So, I tried this
new driver without any success.

I have Nvidia Gefore4 MK440 AGP card. My earlier version Ubuntu was using
restricted driver and I assume that Hardy is also using the same.

As I suggested by you, I typed the commands and the results are pasted for
your information.

When I typed gstream-properties, multimedia system selector dialog box
opened. When I tested video input device, it says "Device "/dev/video0" does

[ubuntu-in] Loaded Ubuntu 7.10 in my desktop

2007-10-21 Thread Mohan Dasaratha Rao
Hi all!

I just started using Ubuntu 7.04 in my desktop a few weeks back and I was
lucky to see an upgrade within a short period. Immediately, I tried
upgrading it. After a few tries, I could accomplish it. The upgrade download
was direct and not through bit torrent. Sometimes, the download speed became
slow and had to abort the download. It took nearly 8 hours to complete the
download and installation excluding my aborted attempts. 1068 files were
downloaded for the upgrade. The installation was smooth.

One positive thing that happened was on Google Earth. IN Ubuntu 7.04, it was
not working. When I installed Google Earth, I did not press "Quit" and
instead pressed "OK" in the installation dialog window. The Ubuntu support
document specifically said "not to do this". In a hurry, I did this mistake.
I was logged out every time, I launched Google Earth in Ubuntu 7.04. I
wanted to uninstall and was looking in the net for a neat uninstall
procedure. In the mean time, I upgraded Ubuntu to 7.10. To my surprise,
Google Earth started working automatically under Ubuntu 7.10.

I find a lot of applications added in 7.10 repository. I had Automatix2
repository in my earlier version of Ubuntu. This did not work after upgrade.
I had to uninstall it and install the one suitable for Ubuntu 7.10. This
also works now.

Ubuntu 7.10 seems to be faster than 7.04. I can not be sure of it, since it
is not based on any verifiable data. Installation and usage of 7.10 was
smooth so far. All my loaded applications and configurations were intact,
excepting Automatix, of course.

Regards

[ubuntu-in] I am part of this community now

2007-10-15 Thread Mohan Dasaratha Rao
Hello everybody,
I started seeing threads to my posting and feeling excited and involved. I
thank Mr. Rajesh for his kind words. I also see the posting of nan budh It
is really a mistake. Yes. It is can not be 27 years. My calculation was
wrong. I started exploring PC from 1985 itself with dos. I had exclusive PC
with windows from 1992. There were few versions earlier to windows 95.
Windows 95 upgrade was a major one in those days. If I remember correct, the
version of windows was 6.0, which I explored first. The installation files
were more than 40 nos in floppies. Thanks for indicating my error.

My Ubuntu is healthy. My first impression is that it is stable than windows.
Some of my applications I use in Windows do not have linux versions. Some
applications loaded in Ubuntu are not fully functional. These are early
times for me and I may be doing something wrong. After some exploration and
experimentation, I can come to a final conclusion.

The first major issue I have, at present, is WLAN setting. When I connect my
PC to wireless router (Airtel supplied Beetel 440 TXI ADSL modem + wireless
router) through cable, Ubuntu connects to the net. When I try to connect
through wireless PCI adapter (Netgear WG311GE v3), Ubutu does not work. I am
searching the net for a possible solution.

It is good that I joined this community. I would definitely be more
enlightened. Thank you all.

This renaming is because of the PATA drivers in the linux kernel (2.6.20+ ?)

Subsequent indexing of files will be a lot faster if you have inotify
compiled into the kernel. This is compiled in as part of the stock
kernel in Ubuntu.

Try tracker (http://www.gnome.org/projects/tracker/). Much lighter and
faster. And yes it is in C.

Emacs does not have a GUI? Sacrilege! Are you using the emacs-nox
package? Even then vim/emacs has a ncurses type GUI.

[ubuntu-in] unable to connect to net when booting on Xen enabled kernel

2006-11-10 Thread Prashanth Mohan
Hello,

I installed the Xen hypervisor kernel
(xen-image-xen0-2.6.17-6-generic-xen0) from the Ubuntu repositories. I
am using edgy on my PC. Some of my hardware setting are here:
http://pastebin.ca/244948

I am able to work fine from the stock kernel. However, when I boot into
the Xen enabled kernel, I am unable to ping any website. Any one know
any reasons?

Thanks,

[ubuntu-in] Compilation of Custom kernel in Edgy

Hello,

Has someone managed to compile a custom kernel in Edgy Eft?

I tried to compile the 2.6.17 kernel with the beyond patchset applied.
And i get the following error. I get the same error on the vanilla
kernel too.

Is someone facing the same problem? Does someone know a work around?

Thanks,

And if you have a working net connection setup on your Ubuntu
Installation, you can install the GCC by:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install build-essential

and for Sun Java:
sudo apt-get install sun-java5-jdk sun-java5-jre

Also make sure that all the repositories are uncommented in the
/etc/apt/sources.list file.

[ubuntu-in] Inittab ttys

2006-10-15 Thread Prashanth Mohan
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Hello,

I have commented out all except 2 terminals for my system (in my inittab
file):
# Note that on most Debian systems tty7 is used by the X Window System,
# so if you want to add more getty's go ahead but skip tty7 if you run X.
#
1:2345:respawn:/sbin/getty 38400 tty1
2:23:respawn:/sbin/getty 38400 tty2
#3:23:respawn:/sbin/getty 38400 tty3
#4:23:respawn:/sbin/getty 38400 tty4
#5:23:respawn:/sbin/getty 38400 tty5
#6:23:respawn:/sbin/getty 38400 tty6

However, when I start the system, all I get all 6 terminals active. I am
on Ubuntu Edgy Eft, which uses the upstart initialising system instead
of sysvinit. Could it be because of that?

How do I ensure that only 2 getty terminals are started?

Regards,

[ubuntu-in] Linux compilation problem

Hello,

I am not able to compile any kernel sources on my machine (Ubuntu Edgy

with some patch sets). I get the following error:

My .config is pasted at http://pastebin.ca/203484 (I am using a very
basic .config file for now -- the one that comes default with the
kernels of the Ubuntu repo). I try to create the image using the
following command -- `make-kpkg --initrd kernel_image kernel_headers'

What could be the reason?

I have still not been able to solve the issue. Has anyone compiled a
custom kernel successfully on Edgy?

Hey Sudharshan!

Dapper is very stable for me! Replace your sources.list file with
'http://prash.be/files/sources.list' and then run an `apt-get update &&
apt-get dist-upgrade`. This should do fine :-)
