[Bug 731879] [NEW] libpam-ldap depends on ldap-auth-client
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: libpam-ldap Installation of libpam-ldap adds loads of trash to the system. Dependency on ldap-auth-config pulls also ldap-auth-client. As I can see ldap-auth-config is used for configuration of PAM in some old-way (it overwrites /etc/pam.d/common-*) and not actually using the libpam- runtime's pam-auth-update to manage pam.d files. Meanwhile libpam-ldap also depends on libpam-runtime! So in one package we depend on the old and the new config way, while in fact the postinstall script uses the new one and the user would have to run the old one manually. Why do this at all? And why depend on ldap-auth- client. Perhaps if somebody was interested in this, it could be Suggested? ** Affects: libpam-ldap (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to libpam-ldap in ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/731879 Title: libpam-ldap depends on ldap-auth-client -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

This shows that the language was C (because I was in a minimal chroot probably). I installed langauge-pack-en and then this script started showing the pound symbol properly. So the real issue is making sure your locale is set to UTF-8. This is the exact suggestion of the first comment on http://us3.php.net/escapeshellarg Given all of this, I think this isn't a bug that we're going to fix or even can.. users need to be explicit about their locale if they expect characters specific to that locale to work. EC2 Migrate EBS AMI tool, call for volunteers
Hi everyone, A while back I had sent an email asking for people interested in working on a python tool to help migrate ebs AMIs across ec2 regions. Since then the project has progressed a bit: - Project page is now: https://launchpad.net/ec2-migrate-ebs-ami - Project is now able to launch two utility instances in the two specified regions, and mount the source volume in the source instance - What remains is attaching a destination volume, and sync'ing over contents. More details can be found on the blueprint: https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/cloud-server-n-ec2-migrate-region Development pace has now slowed down significantly, as such I am renewing the call. This is a great way to start getting involved with cloud development, and to join the Ubuntu Cloud and server communities! joining in is easy, you don't even have to know lots of python to start hacking! The steps are very well defined, and I am happy to help with all steps along the way. If you are thinking about it, go ahead and get in touch with me right now (kim0 on irc, kim0 AT ubuntu.com) or join today's irc meeting (6pm-UTC #ubuntu-cloud https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuCloudMeeting) Thanks -- ubuntu-server mailing list ubuntu-server@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server More info: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ServerTeam
Re: run our business's mail server (W2003-DOMINO) as a KVM
Quoting jurgen.depic...@let.be (jurgen.depic...@let.be): Hi all, I posted a small question on #ubuntu-server: I noticed that ubuntu 10.04.2 LTS has quite old libvirt versions (libvir 0.7.5) which lacks many functions, like managedsave or snapshotting. What's the recommended way to get the latest versions there? What exactly is your goal? If you just want some data snapshotted, I would think the safest way would be to put that data on a separate LVM partition on the host, passed in as a virtio device, and use LVM snapshots to back up the data. -serge -- ubuntu-server mailing list ubuntu-server@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server More info: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ServerTeam

virt-manager including a feature in lucid
Hello list , I am not sure if this can be done in an easy way, but upstream virt-manager just added the ability to manually specify the network interface to which the virtual machine should be attached. This is necessary because the only proper way for now is by using netcf when working on a remote machine. Since i doubt ubuntu will have it ported and working anytime soon, i was wondering if the feature can be backported to the current lucid version of virt-manager. Re: Good book recommendations ?
Mark, I would recommend The official Ubuntu server book: http://www.amazon.com/Official-Ubuntu-Server-Book-2nd/dp/0137081332/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8qid=1299693203sr=8-1 Deployments I created a wiki page that completely automates an install from start to finish for lucid: https://www.frackingtubes.com/wiki/index.php/Ubuntu_preseed.cfg_installs_off_PXE_Boot The book also talks about this. automated backup and recovery is also explained allot in the book. I don't specifically use Nagios but buying a book specifically on it will defiantly give you more than you ever wanted to know: http://www.amazon.com/Nagios-Network-Monitoring-Wolfgang-Barth/dp/1593270704 I use http://zabbix.org but I'm probably in the minority here. I hear allot of people use Nagios. Zabbix does everything I need for monitoring. For configuration management allot of people are using puppet chef. Neither of which I have used but are on my list to learn. If you know specifically at what book you want to buy I would just ask on this email thread. I have spent a small fortune on tech books over the years. ~Dan On Wed, Mar 9, 2011 at 11:24 AM, Mark van Harmelen m...@cs.man.ac.ukwrote: Hi everyone We are getting more serious about our random collection of servers, all running ubuntu server 10.04+, and want to buy some books that we can use to build our knowledge and skills.
