Re: New notification system.

2009-03-10 Thread Jussi Schultink
Hi all,

I have to say I agree with Eric. the more we deviate from regular
Ubuntu - especially in areas that shouldn't really affect studio - the
more work we make for ourselves, in both adapting studio to fit that
and trying to support users who are expecting the same as Ubuntu.
IMHO, we need to keep as close to ubuntu as possible, while making
only changes that actually affect performance for studio users. This
minimises work for us and makes a somewhat familiar environment for
users.

Just my 2c.

The confusion I thought might arise would be from new users who rely heavily
on forum posts, howtos, and regular ubuntu documentation etc... that all say
their computer should behave in way_X and actually behaves in way_Y. From
reading many posts in the forums, I've seen quite a few newbies who still
can't understand why Intrepid's RT kernel doesn't work well for audio -
despite the many many many warnings on all the documentation. (I'm just
using this particular bug as a documentation/new user issue, I'm in no way
comparing kernels to notifications)

I will fully admit that I haven't researched how "ready" the notification
system is yet, but I've had only minor glitches through most of my Jaunty
testing (seems to be working right now).

"Confusion" how?

*Technically* there's no reason it won't work. We'll just use the old
system. I don't feel it's mature enough for now. Also, this (the new
system) is really more for desktop users atm. Studio isn't a desktop distro.

I'm not on the studio team, but I see no major issues with it. Removing it
could cause many newbies great confusion and possibly troubleshooting woes.
My vote is to keep it - if I get a vote.

Ok. I'm not convinced this is right for Studio this release. My vote is
to remove it and revisit it for Karmic.

What you mention in your 1st paragraph has been my biggest issue. It
happens the same way for the trap app "mail-notification". When you get
alot of mail, this behavior is damn annoying. :)

I'll keep in contact with the guys working on this. Alot of work is
still ongoing. If we're not happy with it in a month or so we can drop it.

The most annoying thing with the new notification system, in my
opinion at least, is how it handles pop ups that previously used to
have any kind of interaction buttons. For example pidgin's libnotify
plugin that has a "show" button, clicking on which takes you to the
pidgin window (or some such). Of course, most of the time one simply
ignores a lot of these notifications, but with the new system you
can't ignore it. They pop up in the middle of the screen in their own
window. That's pretty horrible. In fact, it's so horrible, that I
can't imagine it being kept like that for long.

What I'm trying to say is that I'm hoping the most annoying things
with the new notification system will be fixed before Jaunty is out.
We could just as well go with it. Also, there has been a lot of
critique of Mark's idea to completely eliminate the interaction
possibility. Hopefully that critique will be taken into account when
developing the notification system.

Cory, can you point out some of the stuff that didn't work - or didn't
work properly - for you? For me, like I said, it's mainly the window
pop ups.

K.

I'm attending the Dublin Bug Jam tomorrow. I will take a good amount
of time while there to test the new notification system and will
report what I find and what I think.

I encourage more of our developers to do this also :)
