[ubuntu-uk] Unity and Gnome Shell
rant I have been looking at reviews of Gnome Shell, and I do not like what I have seen. (I have also tried running it, without success so far.) The screenshots show lots of white text on a black background, which I dislike as I find it difficult to read, although I suppose that there will be themes available in due course which I will find more acceptable. More importantly, I suspect that for some uses it will be more awkward than Gnome 2. If I am understanding it correctly, if there are two or more maximised windows open on one desktop, switching between them will take 2 or 3 mouse clicks, rather than just one as at present. However, I dare say if I used it for a while once it has been more fully developed I could get used to it. I have also tried using Unity, which is apparently to be the default for 11.04. The first problem was that it was unacceptably slow, taking several seconds to respond to mouse clicks, and therefore I quickly uninstalled it. However, I saw enough of it to decide that there is no way I want to use it; the whole concept seems totally unsuitable for desktop computers. I do not think I would be happy using it even on a netbook. If, when I first tried Ubuntu, I had been faced with someting along the lines of Unity, I would probably still be using Windows. The decision to move the window controls from the right to the left would have been annoying, but it is easy to move them back. I doubt if I will be installing any version of Ubuntu which includes Unity, unless it is possible to replace it easily with Gnome 2 or an improved Gnome Shell. I guess I will be sticking to 10.4 and 10.10 for a while, and then if Canonical are still touting Unity I will just have to switch to Debian. /rant Les. __ This email has been scanned by Netintelligence http://www.netintelligence.com/email -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UKTeam/

[ubuntu-uk] U^3 (U-Cubed) An Ubuntu / Debian event happening in Manchester on the 28th August 2010
On 28th August, MadLab is hosting U^3 (U-Cubed) - an Ubuntu and Upstream UnWorkshop day in collaboration with HacMan, ManLUG and Manchester Free Software. The day is inspired by the Ubuntu Global Jam event which is being held on the same weekend. It's an opportunity to help show users how to get involved in wider distribution work - both in the projects they're using already (maybe Ubuntu, maybe just some specific Free Open Source applications) but also in the upstream projects, such as Debian, Gnome and others, and is inspired by the Ubuntu Global Jam events being held on the same day. We're hoping to find support on the day from people experienced in Ubuntu, but also people that are involved in more than just Ubuntu, so we're reaching out to anyone in the North West UK region to see if people are prepared to help out - even if Ubuntu isn't the Linux distribution you normally would use, so, if you're interested and available between 11am and 9pm and can get to Manchester, or even if you can just be around for part of the day, please get in touch with me, or better yet, go to http://u-cubed.eventbrite.com to reserve a ticket. Because we've got limited space, we can only allocate 60 tickets, and to make it fair for everyone, we're giving people access to these tickets at 1PM on Thursday 12th August (giving people a chance to find out about the event), but if you're able to come along to help out with technical information or guidance, please let me know and I'll make sure that you're invited when the flood gates open! Am I right to assume that if I were to update the kernel through update-manager, and i then copied those kernel files onto the FAT16 partition, it would boot using the new shiny kern? I have installed Karmic alongside Jaunty on a computer with an Intel graphics chipset, but in Karmic the screen resolution is limited to 800 x 600. I've only just got around to installing Ubuntu 8.04, and have managed to resolve most of the initial problems - my Speedtouch modem and VMware Player are both working, and Firefox 3 no longer starting in off-line mode. But one of the only two games I play on the computer, Mines, seems to have changed very much for the worse, with cells being displayed with a transparency which makes them difficult to read. Does anyone know if this is this a bug or a feature? And if it is a feature, is it possible to revert to the version didtributed with Gutsy? [ubuntu-uk] Broadband
Thanks for the replies to my query. It does seem that BT should be avoided like the plague, according to The Register (www.theregister.co.uk) Apparently they are planning to relay all the http web pages their customers view to servers in China, run by a Phorm, a company with a history of using spyware and with dodgy Russian connections, to allow targeted advertising. Virgin Media and Carphone Warehouse are doing the same. While it will be possible to opt out of targeted ads, it looks as though it will not be possible to opt out of the redirection of the web pages. Although Phorm claim that all the data will be anonymised, that they will not look at https pages and that numbers longer than 3 digits will be ignored, it seems obvious that there is a potential for identity theft, as well as a major breach of privacy. [ubuntu-uk] Broadband
Hello, Sorry if I am asking a rather basic question - I think I sort of know the answer to this one but would like to be sure. A friend is intending to use my old computer (dual boot with Ubuntu and Windows ME, 450 MHz, 256 GB RAM, 2 USB ports but no ethernet) for modest internet access. I have managed to persuade him that it is safer to use only Ubuntu for the internet, and I have provided a Thomson/Alcatel Speedtouch modem, for which I have Linux drivers, for use in the meantime. However, he may get a laptop at some point, in which case a wireless router might be useful. Has anyone any suggestions as to which ISP's are most suitable and Linux friendly? One constraint is that it would be best if the broadband contract does not affect the way in which phone calls are billed, as he will be using someone else's phone line (with their consent). He has been looking at BT and Orange, but has anyone any comments on PlusNet? Les. -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.kubuntu.org/UKTeam/
[ubuntu-uk] Memory problems with Gutsy and OpenOffice
Hello, A first post by someone who has been lurking for some time, picking up useful bits of information. I used Synaptic to upgrade from Feisty to Gutsy, and now find that OpenOffice Calc slows right down and can freeze my computer after a few minutes of use. Using System Monitor shows that memory usage climbs to about 95% (of 512 Mb) whereupon things grind to halt with the hard drive running continuously. I had previously noticed that System Monitor reported the swap size as 7.8 Mb, whereas I thought I had a swap partition of something like 512 Mb, but I never bothered much about this as there did not seem to be any problems when I was using Feisty - I thought that maybe it was being reported wrongly. However, GParted showed that the swap partition was only indeed about 8 Mb, and so I increased it to about 512 Mb. However, the swap size still appears to be only 8 Mb after re-booting and using sudo swapoff -a sudo swapon /dev/sdb5 sudo swapon -s Any suggestions as to how I can get all the swap partition into use? Also, has anyone else had similar problems with OpenOffice and Gutsy? I have used Google to try to find out about this, but although there are some problems being reported, none of them seem to be related to mine. So far I have re-installed OpenOffice Calc without any improvement, but have still to try re-installing the whole OpenOffice suite. One other problem with the upgrade was that VMplayer no longer worked - I had to uninstall it and download the latest version from the VMware website to get it working again.
