[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 851612] Re: Logging out from a FUS session does not reliably return to VT7

2012-02-09 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package lightdm - 1.1.2-0ubuntu1

---
lightdm (1.1.2-0ubuntu1) precise; urgency=low

  * New upstream release:
- Add regression tests for getting the user language and layout
- Stop accidentally distributing libsystem
- Fix introspection bindings not containing any methods (LP: #920810)
- lightdm-set-defaults can now set the autologin user
- Add Python greeter regression tests (representative of all introspection
  based greeters)
- Wait for the VT to become active when switching to avoid a suspected
  race condition somewhere between LightDM, X, ConsoleKit and the kernel.
  (LP: #851612)
- Stop lightdm_greeter_start_session_sync() blocking on success.
  * debian/lightdm.prerm:
- Fix incorrect location of lightdm binary (found by Rolf Anders)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 566437] Re: package fglrx 2:8.723.1-0ubuntu2 failed to REMOVE: error exit status 2 - dpkg-divert: mismatch on package - while removing the package

2012-02-09 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package fglrx-installer - 2:8.723.1-0ubuntu6

---
fglrx-installer (2:8.723.1-0ubuntu6) lucid-proposed; urgency=low

  * debian/fglrx.postrm:
- Do not remove diversions. Those diversions were likely installed by older
  releases of the driver (since we don't use diversions any more). Any
  diversion should be removed in fglrx.preinst, as it's exactly where we
  remove all other diversions (LP: #566437).
  * debian/fglrx.prerm:
- Call dpkg-trigger with --by-package=$PACKAGE_NAME.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 929960] [NEW] I switched users and my mouse turned into a translucent box

2012-02-09 Thread Jonathan Voss
Public bug reported:

I'm guessing the box is 64x64 pixels. It's got horizontal lines across
it. The mouse pointer looks completely normal in screenshots, so I am
including a picture taken with my phone.

It looked messed up in the same way on the other account, and continues
to look messed up now that I have switched back. It still functions
normally, but it's a little hard to know where you're clicking since the
actual pointer seems to be a bit away from the upper left corner of this
box.

By the way, I use a program called redshift, which causes a reddish hue
at night, as can be seen in the picture. Redshift does not appear to
affect the mouse pointer though. It may also cause this bug I guess.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 929947] [NEW] random xorg crashes on 11.10 machine

2012-02-09 Thread ski
Public bug reported:

I'm using a 64-bit 11.10 install (just upgraded from 11.04) on a
system76 Gazelle Professional 6 laptop (self-install). Ever since I
upgraded from 11.04, I'm experiencing sporatic crashes which cause my X
session to die, causing me to return the login screen and loose all my
work. The xorg log shows a segfault relating to libpthread and libc6.
Please note that I am using gdm instead of lightdm to work around a
different bug unrelated to this problem.

ProblemType: Bug

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 929943] [NEW] x11-common package fails update to 1:7.5+6ubuntu3.1

2012-02-09 Thread WBB
Public bug reported:

All of the other "Important security updates" in the Update Manager installed
just fine.
However, the latest x11-common continuously fails with the same "head: not
found"
error message. I did attempt "sudo apt-get clean" in a terminal and this did
appear to
force the download again, however the update attempt still fails with the same
error.

Right, the issue is sort of the inverse; when X (or the kernel) gets
updated, all the drivers and dependent bits and pieces have to be
rebuilt against the new stack, and sometimes various things need updated
to adjust to new APIs. We don't support bumblebee (yet) and thus don't
tend to any rebuilds or fixes that it might require.

The bumblebee folks probably tested against 11.10 to make sure their
stuff built against and worked with the kernel and X in those versions.
And they'll probably need to do so again for 12.04.

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 909557] Re: Dual Monitor Ubuntu 11

2012-02-09 Thread Horea Aflat
Hello Bryce,

I am sorry that I did not respond.
Basically I switched to Ubuntu 10 version so I cannot confirm.
Thank you for your work and I appreciate your answer.
You know that reason that I switched is that Ubuntu 11 was a little
unstable. For example outside of monitor problem it was loosing WiFi
network from time to time.

Thanks
Horea

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 923569] Re: Unity does not recognize twinview settings after crash and manual restart.

2012-02-09 Thread Bryce Harrington
Not arguing that nvidia sucks due to its lack of xrandr-ness, but that
issue is already covered by bug #567963 (and is *quite* well known
upstream), so if the nvidia task was given just because nvidia uses
twinview, I don't think the task is necessary, we can just consider that
aspect dupe of #567963.

Until nvidia does support xrandr 1.2+, Unity just needs to be able to
handle twinview setups. (And possibly needs to keep supporting it as
long as nvidia/twinview is a supported option).

If there is something that needs investigated on the nvidia side, please
elaborate.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 908890] Re: Unity graphics corrupted on Ubuntu 11.10 and AMD/Radeon based netbook

2012-02-09 Thread Theodore Omtzigt
Would it help to get Gateway involved or is this a pure Ubuntu issue?

I would love to have this netbook be my portable robot controller. As
indicated it worked with 10.04 without Unity but the robotics operating
system needs 11.

If I need to generate any log files let me know where I can find them
without the help of the GUI.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 929892] Re: Catalyst is unable to support a second monitor (Ubuntu 12.04 Alpha 2)

2012-02-09 Thread Bilal Akhtar
It's a pure Catalyst problem. The FGLRX driver powers the X server,
which powers Unity. Unity doesn't have to deal with those internals of
the system, it just draws a shell and updates it as needed (i.e. when a
new monitor is added or removed), but it doesn't have anything to do
with the monitor configuration itself.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 929930] [NEW] nvidia-current package does not install nvidia-settings app

2012-02-09 Thread Thomi Richards
Public bug reported:

THe nvidia-current package does not install the nvidia-settings binary,
but does install the nvidia-settings desktop file:

$ dpkg -L nvidia-current | grep settings
/usr/share/doc/nvidia-current/html/nvidiasettings.html
/usr/share/pixmaps/nvidia-current-settings.png
/usr/share/nvidia-current/ubuntu-nvidia-settings.desktop
/usr/share/man/man1/alt-nvidia-current-settings.1.gz

$ cat /usr/share/nvidia-current/ubuntu-nvidia-settings.desktop
[Desktop Entry]
Type=Application
Encoding=UTF-8
Name=NVIDIA X Server Settings
Comment=Configure NVIDIA X Server Settings
Exec=/usr/bin/nvidia-settings
Icon=nvidia-current-settings
Categories=System;Settings;

$ ls /usr/bin/nvidia-settings -l
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 33 Jan 23 10:39 /usr/bin/nvidia-settings ->
/etc/alternatives/nvidia_settings

$ ls -l /etc/alternatives/nvidia_settings
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 52 Jan 23 10:39 /etc/alternatives/nvidia_settings ->
/usr/lib/nvidia-settings-updates/bin/nvidia-settings

$ ls -l /usr/lib/nvidia-settings-updates/bin/nvidia-settings
ls: cannot access /usr/lib/nvidia-settings-updates/bin/nvidia-settings: No such
file or directory

However:

$ ls -l /usr/lib/nvidia-settings/bin/nvidia-settings
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 1776800 Nov 16 04:50
/usr/lib/nvidia-settings/bin/nvidia-settings

...so it looks like the symlink in /etc/alternatives needs to be updated
perhaps?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 929892] [NEW] Catalyst is unable to support a second monitor (Ubuntu 12.04 Alpha 2)

2012-02-09 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

I am testing Ubuntu 12.04 Alpha 2 on the ThinkPad E525.

I am using the latest version of Catalyst (installed via jockey).

I have a laptop screen (1366x768) and an LCD Panel (1920x1080) connected
via HDMI.

In the open source driver, it is possible to configure a multi monitor
display, where the two desktops are separate. With Catalyst this is not
possible in the latest version of Unity.

I'm not sure whether this is a unity problem or an upstream problem with
fglrx. Presumably the latter will need to support whatever changes are
made for the final 12.04?

Let me know if there's any info I can gather on this.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 409797] Re: [karmic kubuntu] high cpu usage after suspend to ram

2012-02-09 Thread Yaroslav Zubkov
I can confirm that xorg is causing high CPU usage after resuming from
suspend. I have Linuxmint 12 KDE. I resumed my computer and the CPU
usage stayed steady at 25%. I opened system monitor and Xorg was the
only process consuming that bandwidth. I have not modified any of my
Xorg settings.

Please let me know what information I could provide next time this
happens to me.

2012-02-09 Thread Jason Greathouse
This problem happens constantly for me. Seems to most often coincide
with swithing my kvm over (so usb connect) or using the wheel on my
logitech mouse.

Same symptoms:
  ATI graphics card
  xorg process shows 100% cpu
  UI freezes

Only a reboot clears it up.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 927618] Re: Unity crashes after having had an external monitor

2012-02-09 Thread Bryce Harrington
There is no evidence of an X failure here in the X or kernel logs, it
sounds like it may be just a typical unity crash.

Please post the section of your .xsession-errors from around the time of
the crash, there should be an error message indicated. Include the
dozen lines or so of context before and after the crash, but be sure no
personal info / passwords are shown.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 929384] Re: nvidia drivers broken by the recent libc update on i386 arch

2012-02-09 Thread Steve Langasek
according to the comments on the eglibc patch from one of the upstream
authors, this is a workaround for what's really a bug in the nvidia
driver. I don't know if we want to keep the nvidia-graphics-drivers
task open, but that's certainly not anything foundations can fix, so
unassigning from us.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 783993] Re: unity freezing periodicly [drm:drm_mode_getfb] *ERROR* invalid framebuffer id

2012-02-09 Thread Joseph Salisbury
Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? It
will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest
v3.3 kernel[1] (Not a kernel in the daily directory). Once you've
tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing'
tag(Only that one tag, please leave the other tags). This can be done by
clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom
of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text.

If this bug is fixed by the mainline kernel, please add the following
tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream-KERNEL-VERSION'. For example, if kernel
version 3.3-rc2 fixed the issue, the tag would be: 'kernel-fixed-
upstream-v3.3-rc2'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag:
'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot,
please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as
"Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

The way apport works, it can't hold onto the root password between
function calls. This bug was "solved" by attaching all three gdm files
in one function call.

However, the display manager data and the kernel data require separate
function calls, and since both require sudo to do so, you get prompted
twice. Still an undesired behavior, but not this bug.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 929711] Re: graphic effect

2012-02-09 Thread Paolo Rotolo
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we cannot work on this bug because your
description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful
to read "How to report bugs effectively"
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

reporting my libc6 version instead.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 716595] Re: Apport hook prompts 3 times for password

2012-02-09 Thread Avi Greenbury
I still get this sort of behaviour - I was asked once for a password for
the video data and again for the data for my kernel. This is on 12.04
when Compiz crashed.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 929655] Re: Unity randomly freezes after 11.10 upgrade

2012-02-09 Thread Bryce Harrington
jpds posted me the pertinent bits from the .xsession-errors:

** (gnome-fallback-mount-helper:1522): DEBUG: ConsoleKit session is active 0
gnome-session[1430]: WARNING: Application 'compiz.desktop' killed by signal
gnome-session[1430]: WARNING: App 'compiz.desktop' respawning too quickly
gnome-session[1430]: CRITICAL: We failed, but the fail whale is dead. Sorry

So, compiz is definitely getting stuck in a loop. gnome-session notices
it's failing and (I guess) restarts the session.

I'd follow the usual compiz troubleshooting steps from here. Enable
debugging; test a guest session; run compiz through gdb; disable compiz
plugins one by one, etc.

does not fix this issue. the reason we couldn't reproduce it on the

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 929384] Re: nvidia drivers broken by the recent libc update on i386 arch

2012-02-09 Thread Bryce Harrington
Jeroen, to clarify, you may not think you are using nvidia, but the bug
report captured a crash that appears to happen in nvidia's GL code:

 Thread 1 (LWP 2423):
 #0 0xb761f216 in ?? () from /usr/lib/nvidia-current/libGL.so.1

Your X logs just show -vesa loaded, which doesn't tell us much.

I think to work around the issue, you should do an apt-get purge of the
nvidia files (you can leave nvidia-common installed, it's harmless.)

We anticipate having an updated -nvidia ready later today that will
support this new libc.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 929655] Re: Unity randomly freezes after 11.10 upgrade

2012-02-09 Thread Bryce Harrington
There are errors about invalid framebuffers:

Xorg.0.log:
(EE) intel(0): Couldn't create pixmap for fbcon

dmesg:
[11678.477663] init: tty1 main process ended, respawning
[11680.331193] [drm:drm_mode_getfb] *ERROR* invalid framebuffer id

However these are not likely to be the cause of your issue.

Given that killing compiz restores the system to functionality, this
tends to suggest a bug in compiz, unity, or one of the compiz plugins.

Reproduce the bug and capture your ~/.xsession-errors while the system
is frozen, and attach that here. Hopefully the tail end of that will
contain a pertinent error message.

You may also want to review what compiz plugins you have enabled or any
compiz settings you may have made. Or, try logging into a guest session
and see if the error reproduces there.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 875236] Re: (EE) intel(0): Couldn't create pixmap for fbcon

2012-02-09 Thread Bryce Harrington
The error message "(EE) intel(0): Couldn't create pixmap for fbcon" is
probably harmless; it just means when X was restarted from the display
manager it wasn't able to do the seamless transition.

As to why you can get into unity 2d but not unity, nothing pertinent in
the X logs.  Try it again and watch the tail end of .xsession-errors;
perhaps it's a compiz bug?

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 570151] Re: mouse stuck jumping between screens

2012-02-09 Thread dan_linder
I've been running Oneiric since December use it as primary workstation
weekdays, two NVidia cards driving three screens and I haven't had the
"stuck" mouse issue. (Though I had applied the PPA version on my
previous workstation so the problem has been a distant memory for me
for quite a while...)

I'll try to re-configure Synergy this weekend, Synergy was the program
that seemed to hang my system the most.

2012-02-09 Thread Jean-Baptiste Lallement
SRU verification for Lucid:
I have reproduced the problem with fglrx 2:8.723.1-0ubuntu5 in lucid-updates
and have verified that the version of fglrx 2:8.723.1-0ubuntu6 in -proposed
fixes the issue.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 929384] Re: nvidia drivers broken by the recent libc update

2012-02-09 Thread Rachel Greenham
have nvidia, did upgrade as normal this morning, which I noticed *did*
include libc6 and kernel. Been using it since, with no problems except
handbrake's picture setting window won't open when run locally, which is
probably unrelated.

rachel@twilight:~$ uname -a
Linux twilight 3.2.0-15-generic #24-Ubuntu SMP Tue Feb 7 22:32:19 UTC 2012
x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
rachel@twilight:~$ aptitude show nvidia-current | grep ^Version
Version: 290.10-0ubuntu2
rachel@twilight:~$ aptitude show libc6 | grep ^Version
Version: 2.15~pre6-0ubuntu10

Though I think I might have seen something like it in the past, but
probably unrelated and just looks similar.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 921313] Re: closing laptop lid while connected to an external display does not disable the laptop screen

2012-02-09 Thread Craig Magina
I've attached the requested dmesg output. This is a fresh install and I
cannot remember whether I ever closed the laptop lid while it was hooked
up to an external display.

The key issue here is that when I close the lid, the display turns off,
but it is not removed from X causing applications to be started over on
that display.
