Right, the issue is sort of the inverse; when X (or the kernel) gets updated, all the drivers and dependent bits and pieces have to be rebuilt against the new stack, and sometimes various things need updated to adjust to new APIs. We don't support bumblebee (yet) and thus don't tend to any rebuilds or fixes that it might require. The bumblebee folks probably tested against 11.10 to make sure their stuff built against and worked with the kernel and X in those versions.
