Re: Upgrading XenServer Clusters managed by ACS...

2021-03-31 Thread David Merrill
I suspect the answer is a qualified "maybe/yes"? A couple (humble) thoughts as
it sounds like you've got the two upgrades in mind:

 - focus first on the upgrade path to the latest ACS 4.*.* that still supports
XS 6.2.0
 - determine the upgrade path from XS 6.2.0 to XCP 8.2 (not sure - just
something work considering - maybe you'd need/want to upgrade to XS 6.5/7.*
first?)
 - (sorry to be pedantic), lab it all up & test before doing anything in
production!

I'd defer to Andrija (& the rest of the list!) for any other advice.

The finality would be to move our ACS 4.3 to ACS 4.15 in order to convert
in fine our XS 6.2 to XCP 8.2

@Andrija, would you think this could be achieved ?*

Re: Upgrading XenServer Clusters managed by ACS...

2020-07-13 Thread David Merrill
Reporting in on this - turns out was fairly painless (I never ended up goofing
around with host tags at all).

Here's an updated to-do list (with some observations):

  1. In XenCenter – if HA is enabled for the XenServer pool, disable it
  2. Stop ACS management/usage services
  3. Do MySQL database backups
  4. Start ACS management/usage services
  5. Start with the pool master
  * In ACS – Put the pool master into maintenance mode (this
migrate all guest VMs to other hosts in the cluster)
  * In ACS – Un-manage the cluster (this keeps any activity from
happening in the pool)
  * NOW – Upgrade the XenServer pool master to the latest release

  i. Do this by picking up the “correct” ISO
from Citrix, burning it to a CD/DVD/USB-stick, booting the host with it &
performing a manual upgrade to the version of XenServer you’re going to

ii. Before upgrading the installer should make
a backup of the existing installation

iii. When the upgrade is complete you’ll be
prompted to reboot the host

   iv. OBSERVATION (after booting):

* The XenServer console (the ncurses interface) still
said XenServer 6.5 in the upper-left-hand corner (which led me to believe that
the upgrade hadn’t worked)
* However when I reconnected with XenCenter it reported
XenServer 7.1 CU2 was installed
*   So…OK, fine?
* There were no host tags for that newly upgraded host,
so my to-do to remove the tag wasn’t necessary
  *   In ACS – Re-manage the cluster
  * In ACS – Exit maintenance-mode for the newly upgraded host
  * In ACS – Observe that the newly upgraded host is “Enabled”
and “Up” in the UI (Infrastructure > Hosts)
  *   OBSERVATION:

  i. After finishing the 2 steps above on
checking in XenCenter the host now had the host tag:
vmops-version-com.cloud.hypervisor.xenerver.resource.XenServer650Resource-4.11.3.0

ii. Scripts in /opt/cloud/bin have a timestamp
that coincides with the cluster being re-managed and the pool master coming out
of maintenance mode

  1. In ACS – Testing (e.g. move an existing router/VM to the upgraded host,
create new networks/VMs on the upgraded host)

  i. OBSERVATION:

* Moving existing router/VMs to the upgraded host worked
* I was not able to create new VMs until all pool members
were at the same level of XenServer
  1. Rinse & repeat with the remaining XenServer pool members in the ACS
cluster
  * Follow the same steps as the pool master EXCEPT do not
un-manage/re-manage the cluster in ACS (no need to do so really although from
the perspective of operators new VM creation is clearly not possible until were
done and who knows maybe you don’t really want folks trying to take actions
while you’re in the middle of all this?)
  *   OBSERVATION (unexpected):

  i. I noticed that even before I had brought
a newly upgraded pool member out of maintenance in ACS that the following host
tag
vmops-version-com.cloud.hypervisor.xenerver.resource.XenServer650Resource-4.11.3.0
 was already there

ii. AND that the Scripts in /opt/cloud/bin had
a timestamp that coincides with the pool member’s recent reboot

  1. In XenCenter – if HA was enabled at the start, re-enable it

So my lab pool is up and running upgraded from XenServer 6.5 to XenServer 7.1.2
CU2 LTSR and so far, CloudStack 4.11.3 seems to be happy with it.

Next steps are to apply the latest XenServer hotfixes (following the same
recipe above) and re-test activities in ACS.

Thanks,

David

Hi David,

those steps need to be tested - I would skip the whole
"environment.properties" file and see how it behaves today - the reason
being that, though the article on shapeblue.com was old, it does mention
both "Unmanage" cluster and Maintenace mode - so I'm not quite sure what is
the difference today vs. how it behaved back in time of ACS 4.3 / XS 6.2 -
the explanation that you've found on the mailing thread may not make sense,
I mean specifically the "There wasn't an 'unmanage' button at the time",
since the article clearly mentions it).

There is also no need to manually migrate VM's away from a host (i.e. pool
master) - simply put it into the Maintenance mode and it will move VMs away
to other hosts.

Assuming that putting the pool-master into Maintenance mode in ACS will,
these days, NOT trigger a new host to become a master, your steps look fine.

For the records, I've updated& the official documentation, for
XenServer 6.5+ : https://github.com/apache/cloudstack-documentation/pull/140
 /

https://acs-www.shapeblue.com/docs/WIP-PROOFING/pr140/installguide/hypervisor/xenserver.html#upgrading-xenserver-versions
-
i.e. removed unneeded steps and explained what each script is doing. This
guide assumes a much longer management plane downtime, as the cluster is
unmanaged while you update all the hosts in the pool. Works fine also for
XCP-ng upgrades, etc.

Either way, I prefer doing it based on the plan you laid out here.

Upgrading XenServer Clusters managed by ACS...

2020-06-19 Thread David Merrill
loudstack.apache.org/en/latest/installguide/hypervisor/xenserver.html#upgrading-xenserver-versions

which asks one to run a lot of scripts (cleaning VLANs, preparing for upgrade
etc.) in addition to copying files from the management server to the XenServer
host (to set it back up again for ACS). I’m really hoping that step 11 saves me
from that.

So (asks after all):

  1. Is this a reasonable/viable plan?
  2. Is my take on step 7 correct?

Thanks for taking a look,
David

Re: CloudStack - Ubuntu/KVM (all in one management-server/host) - OS Upgrade w/o updating System VMs

2020-05-19 Thread David Merrill
Reporting in, I was able to roll-back the cloudstack packages and reload the
backup of the cloud database and get the UI going again.

So that's good, but a couple questions on this page (and registering the
template in the UI):

 -
http://docs.cloudstack.apache.org/en/latest/upgrading/upgrade/upgrade-4.11.html#update-system-vm-templates

1. I understand it's important to use the values specified, I assume setting
the "name" specifically as stated is what helps cloudstack "find" the new
templates when upgrading the database?

2. In the UI there's an HVM checkbox (that's defaulted to checked), but the
documentation (above) doesn't specifically refer to it. So for my clarity
(hopefully I just need to be remided), leave it checked or unchecked? Does it
matter in the context of the system VMs?

Thanks!

There are ways to hack the DB, vm_template table and also use the

CloudStack - Ubuntu/KVM (all in one management-server/host) - OS Upgrade w/o updating System VMs

2020-05-17 Thread David Merrill
Hi All,

I've got a CloudStack 4.11.2 lab running on a single host & made the (dumb)
mistake of running OS updates without updating the system VMs beforehand. The
CloudStack packages upgraded to 4.11.3 just fine but now CloudStack management
services wont start (see below).

Here's my question:

 - Is it *at all* possible to rectify this (now, post package updates) by
getting the new system templates in via the CLI tools
(/usr/share/cloudstack-common/scripts/storage/secondary/cloud-install-sys-tmplt)?
 - The error on the logs *seems* simple, if management could find the new
template maybe things could proceed?

My impression is no given research I've done so far which seems to amount to:

 - roll back to 4.11.2
 - use the pre-upgrade dump of the DB (which I made)
 - start management services
 - get the new system VMs properly (like I should have in the first place)
 - upgrade to 4.11.3

Humbly (& slightly embarrassed) yours, and thanks,
David

From PMC members on code changes:
+1 = yes I agree, lets do this
0 = I don't mind/care either way
-1 = I object to this change (VETO)

From the rest of the community on code changes:
+1 = yes I agree, lets do this
0 = I don't mind/care either way
-1 = I don't like this change.

As this change would effect so many people, I would hope that any issues
would be raised during the discussion and a mutually acceptable way forward
found, before we get as far as a vote.

I love this idea. Separating the UI from the code-base and crafting an API
driven UI presents excellent opportunities for customizable UIs (and getting
folks involved with making them) which can improve user experience.

I'd love to get involved and looking forward to trying it out.

+1 (I've never +1'ed anything before, is it OK? Can I vote?) :)

we'll need some feedback from those using it today (we have our own UI, so this

One of our challenges over the last few years is the added work of
getting UI features into the release and it has added around 30% additional
work load due to the older style code of the current UI. Having it in VUE is
great and I think it will also encourage others to contribute.

+1 to the new UI as it supports:
1. Faster development of features
2. Better experience as a user

Re: integrated cloudstack with XCP-ng 7.6

2019-09-12 Thread David Merrill
I haven't tried it yet (and would like to), in every conversation I'd had with
Dag suggested that one simply proceeded by treating a XCP-ng host as a Xen
host.

I was just searching the 4.13 code (it's what I have on hand) and can only find
references to XCP-ng 7.4 (presumably because that's what been tested?)

2019-06-20 Thread David Merrill
Checking in on this, I pulled the MGMT NICs from the failed switch and the Xen
hosts mgmt.-bond "switched" over to the other (working) network-switch. I now
have control of the hosts in CloudStack & proceed with the controlled-shutdown
so I can then get my switch repair on.

Controlled shutdown post-partial-switch failure...

2019-06-17 Thread David Merrill
Hi All,

I’m fielding an worrisome emergency situation where a set of (2) stacked
switches (serving the MGMT & SAN networks) has partially failed (one of the
stack members was ejected).

Here’s what I’ve got:

  * The Xen hosts 2 MGMT NICs are bonded (active-passive) and connected to
both switches
  * The Xen hosts 2 SAN NICs are NOT bonded and connected to both switches
  * PUB/GUEST NICs are connected to a different set of stacked switches (and
are fine)

Amazingly CloudStack has survived (guest VMs are still running, there’s been no
disk issues).

However I’ve got one compute-cluster (of 6 Xen hosts) in an alert state (as the
pool master is affected) in the CloudStack UI (and cannot manage guests there)
and I cannot get to their MGMT interfaces (going to hop on the hosts today and
get more intel).

A replacement switch is arriving in 24 hours & I’m preparing the switch-swap
process.

I’d REALLY like to shut everything down (guest VM’s) before mucking about with
the switch-stack serving the SAN network, but I think I have to get to the host
MGMT NICs sorted first (my suspicion is that the bonded MGMT NICS haven’t
failed over – due t the nature of the switch failure maybe? – I’m considering
pulling the MGMT NIC connections on the failed switch to see if I can get a
path back).

Anyway, not really much of an ask here, talking myself through it as I ride the
tiger.

Thanks.
David

Visible but greyed out please.

I prefer knowing that an action is possible and understanding that if it's

KVM - configuring libvirtd for use...

2019-02-11 Thread David Merrill
Hi All,

I’m having a go with this:

  *   https://rohityadav.cloud/blog/cloudstack-kvm/

I’m running into a funny problem w/libvirtd on KVM where edits I make to

  *   /etc/libvirt/libvirtd.conf

revert to default values. Specifically “listen_tcp” gets set *back* to 0 after
I’ve set it to 1 and restarted the libvrtd service. I end up in a place where
I’ve arranged things to be able to add the KVM host but find that I can’t
because libvirtd is now not listening on tcp port 16509.

I might be out of scope asking here (maybe it’s more of a Ubuntu/KVM/libvrtd
thing (it’s bizarre, *something* is changing that conf file - I’m just not sure
what it is yet and/or I’ve made some assumption out here on the bleeding edge
of Ubuntu 18.04 & the latest ACS), but I’ve searched a bit and haven’t found a
good line on someone else having this problem. Has anyone run into this before?

Thanks,
David

Hello, Richard.

Well, there are two options:
1. Extend frontend with a plugin which will do everything you need.
2. Implement callback app which will be bound to account 1st login or
registration and automatically creates everything you need.

Anyway, the customization is required. If you decide to go with the second
option, you may contact me directly as we have implemented CS self-registration

Re: TAP/SPAN...

2018-10-12 Thread David Merrill
I'd hoped I could simply "mirror the VLAN" to a specific interface on the
switch, but Dell Support says I cannot pull this off with the switches we have
in place.

So, I'm back to considering mucking with the client's virtual router.

What this site suggests:

 *   https://networkhop.wordpress.com/2016/04/27/port-mirroring-with-iptables/

seems reasonable (in principle):

 iptables -t mangle -I PREROUTING -j TEE –gateway a.b.c.d
 iptables -t mangle -I POSTROUTING -j TEE –gateway a.b.c.d

and easy enough to undo (in principle).

Downsides include:

 1. Overhead associated with duplicating packets
 2. Redoing it should the router need to be recreated (presuming that any edits
wouldn't stick).

Surely I can't be the only one to have considered doing something like this,
maybe folks run some a 3rd-party virtual appliance to get this kind of thing
done?

Retiring OLD Primary Storage - Dealing with System VMs and (assumed) Snapshot related artifacts

2017-06-06 Thread David Merrill
Hi All,

We're in the process of phasing out primary storage in one of our zones and had
some questions about dealing with:

1. system VMs (Console Proxy & Secondary Storage)
2. what looks like (to me), left over snapshot artifacts

We're running CloudPlatform 4.5.1 with XenServer hypervisors and the storage to
be retired are Dell Equallogic servers.

For the first item I think all I need to do is mark the primary storage on the
Dell EQL's into maintenance mode and then destroy them so that they'll come up
on the new primary storage (already provisioned & configured in CloudPlatform).

It's the second item that's giving me pause, when looking at the SR associated
with the primary storage I'm seeing disks named like:

* ABCServer_ROOT-685_20160905000250

and in CloudPlatform have found an associated volume snapshot with the same
date data. This seemed odd because I've understood that volume snapshots should
be on secondary storage.

I deleted the snapshot in CloudPlatform thinking that perhaps the disk above
would disappear from view when looking at the SR in XenCenter, but it's still
there. The impression I'm getting is that perhaps this is left over from some
volume snapshot failure to clean up?

How can I best chase this down? I'd like to retire this storage but I'd like to
make sure that once it's gone there isn't something in the database that's
still referring items there.

Thanks,
David

Re: Anyone using XenServer 7 in production environment

I'm interested in this feedback as well (particularly now that XenServer 7.1
(LTSR) is out - granted only just).

Thanks,
David
