Re: Document Recovery Issue

Thanks, Andrea. I haven't customized anything in the program, but I did
have to change some file associations after installing the other day. It
doesn't appear that those have been reversed with the new profile.

When you force the creation of a new profile, the old one can be
deleted, meaning that the new one is already complete. Very advanced
users may want to copy some of their customizations from the old
profile to the new one, but they are not completely independent, so if
you don't know the internal details of a user profile I would simply
rely on the new profile only, and delete the old one.

  Andrea.

Document Recovery Issue

2014-11-14 Thread John W. Smith
This follows up on my earlier inquiry about the message I was getting
every time I tried to start Open Office, which referred to a document
recovery failure. It came about as a result of a crash, and the error
reporting feature apparently doesn't work. In doing a little research, I
found that it was necessary to change my user profile. Uninstalling and
reinstalling wouldn't have worked. The article I found is at

https://forum.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?p=58403#p58403

Look under the title "Setting the user profile."

I've been able to successfully fix the problem. What I don't know is
whether I should delete the file now named user.old . And I don't know
if I should try copying sub folders into the new User folder to see
which one was causing the problem. Maybe I'll leave well enough alone
for now.

Re: Document Recovery Issue

Marina, Yes, I'm using Apache Open Office 4.1.1. Thanks for the
magnification tip. I'll see what I can do to make that work when I get
the document recovery issue resolved. When I open the Open Office icon,
I have to go through the steps (S & N) as described before. Then it
opens Writer, not the panel that lets me choose the program I want.

By the way, I got 4 copies of your message.

John, have you tried changing magnification through the Zoom slider at

Sorry I can't help with your other issue. I assume you have already
made certain you are using Apache OpenOffice, and not another
application with a similar name?

I don't know how much of this is related to my lack of ability to
access the programs with my screen reader, but is it necessary to
uninstall and reinstall to resolve any of this?

Re: Screen Reader Accessibility

2014-11-13 Thread John W. Smith
Thanks, guys. Very interesting. I have NVDA, but I'm not crazy about
using it much. I can hardly keep track of Window-Eyes commands, let
alone learning those of another screen reader. Does System Access work
with Open Office.

The whole problem started when I accidentally deleted Office Starter
2010 from my Windows 7 computer recently. I don't have the bucks to
upgrade to the full version of Microsoft Office. Window-Eyes didn't work
with the starter package either because it doesn't have the add ins to
make it work. I've been using Jarte for a word processor, which
Window-Eyes will work with. But I'm not the only user on this machine.
Thus, the need for another office suite.

John,

Sorry to say, you've received bad information.

Windows-Eyes is not natively interoperable with IAccessible2 based
applications. GWMicro can build custom interfaces, and as of the 8.4 that
does not include supoort for Apache OpenOffice or LibreOffice.

As both projects have removed the Java Access Bridge kludge needed to use a
Java JRE Accessibility Interface--they do not work with Windows-Eyes.

Windows-Eyes does fine with MS UIA applications like Office 2010 or
2013--and offers heavy discounts for users with those office suites
installed.

JAWS, does a bit better with IAccessibile2 AOO or LibreOffice

But, if you are going to use either OpenSource Office product, the NVDA open
source project is miles ahead in their support of IAccessible2 (with
continued support for Java and MS UIA based Assistive Technology as well).

Re: Screen Reader Accessibility

2014-11-13 Thread John W. Smith
Thanks. I've followed the steps in the knowledge base article, including
restarting my computer after each set of instructions. I can't tell any
difference. I have a little vision and can mouse over icons, which is
how I have to select Writer. But I get little useful information when
I'm in Writer. When I type text, Window-Eyes does not read it back. Does
the version I'm using make a difference? I'm using the latest, which I
think is 4.1.1.

Instructions for this are at the Window-Eyes web site:
http://www.gwmicro.com/Support/Knowledge_Base/?kbnumber=GWKB2017 .

It says that you may need to reinstall the Java Access Bridge and that
you will also need to enable support for assistive technology tools in
OpenOffice itself. For this second task, you will unfortunately
require sighted assistance.

I trust this helps.
