The Librarian of Congress hasn't even agreed to changing DMCA
circumvention prohibitions...unlikely LC is gonna go to the mat for such
radical copyright changes...too much big money in the other camp.

Well per Mr.Smith Goes to Washington "Lost causes are the only ones worth
fighting for", but alas I think this is a lost cause.
You have librarians, academics, archivists, independent filmmakers etc. Vs
studios and multi -national corporations to sway a Congress that can't pass
health care reform. My money is on the corporations.

Re: [Videolib] Copyright Act Reform proposed

2010-02-18 Thread Brewer, Michael
The results of the 108 Study group (and orphan works legislation) have
convinced me that working with what we have may be our best option. It seems to
me like any copyright "reform" is likely to result in gains for corporate
copyright holders and losses for users.

In fact, I already wrote them a note to encourage them to add Section

Oh ye of little faith!

I know Gigi and the gang at Public Knowledge, and I would not
underestimate their strategic positioning or energetic lobbying. They
do know how to get things done in Dee Cee.

In fact, I already wrote them a note to encourage them to add Section
108 issues to their list, so us archivist and librarian-types might also
get some copyright law reform. Anyone interested in working on this,
let me know.

Time to get mobilized!

Re: [Videolib] Copyright Act Reform proposed

2010-02-17 Thread Jessica Rosner
I read parts of it briefly. I could see nothing that would remotely relate
to an issue like streaming a whole film. I have no problem with issues of
incidental and personal use but I suspect the studios do . Sadly they they
tend to concentrate on stuff like clips or incidental music, while largely
ignoring bigger issues.

I admit that the cynic in me wonders if their is a Trojan horse there, since
some of the folks behind are in part the same people who claim it IS legal
to stream a film now.

I think everyone agrees it would be great to get copyright law clarified
and revised, but I suspect this will come through the courts rather than
Congress.
