Is it possible to explicitely set media type? I have some cards in my pmacs
with the same problem (dec cards), and that can be solved by telling linux
to use a certain media type.

Sure you have a regular cable and not a crossover
cable?

Most hubs/routers/switches have an uplink or cascade
port which is made so that it's crossed over
internally
so you can plug a standard cable from it to any
regular port on another hub etc. _Some_ of those
ports will work as a normal port to a computer if you
plug a crossover cable in. Some have a switch for that
port so either type of cable will work.

Many of the newest switches/routers have auto sensing
ports that'll work with either standard or crossover
cables.

If it's the AsanteFast 10/100 NuBus NIC you can try
downloading the drivers from Asante. Most other
Asante NICs work with Apple's drivers in System 7.1
and up. (Or is it 7.5 and up?)

My guess is that you have a 10/100 Autosensing router. Asante cards
are notorious for not working well with autosensing switches and
routers. I have gotten around this problem by sticking a "dumb
hub" in the network between Asante cards and autosensing devices.

You probably do need drivers for this card, but you can get them
from the Asante website. Some of the best support on the web, in
my opinion.

Asante Ethernet card

2004-10-21 Thread Thomas Burns
I have a question about an Asante Ethernet card in a Mac IIci
I installed it and there's a green blinking light on the back. It's hooked
up to my Lynksys router, but on the router the lights are not on showing a
computer is connected.

Do I need drivers for this card? I'm in the pickle of not being able to get
on the internet with the Mac IIci to get anything for it and nothing seems
to transfer over from my PC via PC exchange.

Thanks

Router is SMC Barricade SMC7004VWBR. FYI, an RJ45 ethernet cable from the
router to a RJ45/AAUI transceiver provides flawless internet connectivity
with a 6100. I'm going to re-install the 7>0 SO on the ci before checking
the connections again.

Number of ports is not an issue unless you have enough
computers plugged in and downloading or transferring
so many files it saturates the available bandwidth.
All data incoming to a hub on any port is "broadcast"
to all the other ports. It's up to the "client" to
sift through the datastream and pick out which packets
are meant for it.

Switches direct the incoming data packets to the one
port where the computer they're assigned to is
connected. There is much less traffic on the network
when switches are used and overall speed is better
than hubs when there are several computers
transferring
data at the same time. Doesn't mean that packets don't
get dropped or misdirected or collide, just happens a
whole lot less than with hubs.

Hubs are half duplex, like the majority of NuBus and
LC ethernet cards. Putting the 10 megabit hub in
between the IIci and the fancy router will ensure that
port detects that what's plugged in is 10 megabit,
half duplex.

Some of the Asante cards that predate the 100 megabit
standard do not properly identify their capabilities
so many 10/100 hubs etc try to establish a 100meg,
full duplex connection by default.

Check your router's documentation to see if the
ethernet ports can be manually set individually.
Some 10/100 switches and routers have problems with
some 100meg devices hogging bandwidth when the ports
are set to automatic detection.

Try it direct and if it doesn't work with all the
settings correct, stick a 10 megabit hub between the
IIci and the router, or a 10/100 managed switch or
hub that can have the ports' speed and duplex settings
manually set individually. 4 or 5 port, half duplex,
10
megabit hubs are quite cheap, even brand new.

Make sure you aren't using a crossover cable when
connecting direct to your router. :)

How many ports does your router have? Is one labled
cascade, uplink or something different from the
others? If there is, connect a normal ethernet
cable between that port and any normal port on the
hub. If the router doesn't have the different port,
connect the hub to any port on the router using a
crossover cable.

To make certain, post here the make and model of your
router and I or someone will look it up on the net
to see what it can do with connecting other hubs etc.

The PPPoE can't be (well) handled by a 68K Mac, so direct connections don't
normally work well. Basically, if you avoid Asanté cards, you should be OK,
and if you use a hub between the card and the router, that should also work.

Can you connect directly from the IIci to the DSL modem and establish a
connection? I have heard of a lot of problems between Macs and DSL modems
based on the fact that they use a PPP protocol rather than a simple
ethernet connection. If that is the case, the problem may not be the
Asante card or the hub.

Just a thought.

As long as the FH10T8 is only 10BaseT, it should work. By "older" I meant
"non-autosensing" 10/100 types.

IIci and Asante Ethernet card

I see a number of Asante hubs on eBay that look like they could be had for
anywhere from $6 up to $20 (including shipping charges).

Am I correct in assuming that a hub like the Asante FH10T8, which is not a

I'm wary because the earlier posting called for an "older" hub, and the 10T8
shows up on Asante's website and is available as a current item for sale.

I was referring to a "plain 'ol hub" as a 10bT hub as opposed to one of
the 4-port, autosensing switches, without the built in router. They look
similiar, but Asante cards often have problems with the "autosensing"
feature of the 10/100 switches. They can't "negotiate" the speed.

I am in the process of setting up a network myself. At present I have a
cable modem connected to a SMC Barricade wireless router. An Ethernet cable
connects that to a Power Tower Pro running 8.6, and that works fine. A USB
card on a Windows XP machine also works fine for internet sharing, although
I haven't attempted any file sharing between those two platforms.

My next goal is to add a IIci running 7.0 Updated. I have installed an
Asante MC3NB Nubus Ethernet card. Can I run a line from that card directly
to the router, or do I need to install a hub?

If so, what would you recommend?

Thanks for your response.

To avoid those auto sensing problems, one needs to put a relatively
old 10 mbit hub between the computer with the IIci and the
router/switch. With a modern 100 mbit hub the problem won't go away.

Did you install Open Transport 1.1.1 _then_ 1.1.2?
You must install 1.1.1 first. 1.1.2 is only an update
even though it will install without 1.1.1 already
installed.

It is possible that you have experienced the oft stated problem that
Asante cards (at least the earlier ones) do not work will with "auto
sensing" switches or routers. I have some that will only work if there is
a "plain ol' hub" between the card and the router/switch.

Ken

Use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without.

IIci and Asante Ethernet Card

2003-02-09 Thread Samuel Davies
Hello list,

I posted awhile back with the same problem but I have yet to resolve it:

I have a Mac IIci with a MacCon nubus ethernet card from Asante. It
also has a Radius card in one of the other Nubus slots. The machine is
running 7.5.5 and I installed the open transport I downloaded from
Apple's site. My network is set-up to have my DSL shared through a
router doing DHCP.

I plug one end of the ethernet cable into the router port and the other
to an intake of an ethernet hub. I then connect the asante card to the
hub. The indicator light on the asante card is a solid green, which
should mean that I am connecting (I think). I have the TCP/IP control
panel set to DHCP, but it never receives an IP address.

What do you all think? I'm hoping your expert guidance can help me
through my ignorance of the older systems.

-What are the minimum extensions that would be needed for this set-up
to work? Is there an Asante driver I need from somewhere I haven't
looked yet (I downloaded the one from their site, but it didn't look
like it installed anything).

I am desperate for help and would appreciate any insights. If you have
any more questions or need more specifics, feel free to e-mail me.

Thanks,

Sam Davies
